Arctic Monkeys - AM ALBUM REVIEW

Once again, a new Arctic Monkeys album is lost on me. While some may find the band's easygoing rock instrumentation and singer-songwriter Alex Turner's supposedly clever and humorous lyricism to be entertaining, AM is just another move closer toward making the most cold, calculated, and tame rock music imaginable.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

Not that you can't dislike this album, but I feel like the only argument that you gave was based entirely in your frustration with this being classified as a rock album, and how it doesn't fit that description. Genres are just ways that people can discuss music, they shouldn't be constrictive or define how something should sound.
Another thing I noticed is that he compares it too much to earlier albums and that's kinda unfair since they did want to bring in some new winds in this album. The winds were slow-ish rockstar cool riffs that you would listen in your car. I would say that the album is the soundtrack for them walking on a red carpet with sunglasses on or something
Hmm, I think his main problem is that it's really boring and uninspired...

Arabella is one of my favs on this album
Trippy? Meh seems like hard rock cliches wrapped around a clumsy "melody." Not nearly atmospheric enough to be what I would call trippy. Also they don't just rip a part from War Pigs, there is a clear set of guitar motifs that sound exactly like Shout at the Devil.
Sultans Of Zing tf
Couldn’t disagree more.
You’re basing your review around the fact that this should be a “rock” album. It’s not. Despite what they’ve made in the past.
This album is a noir kind of affair. Leather jackets and night drives through dimly lit backstreets, that sort of thing.
The lyrics are fantastic too.
I usually enjoy your reviews but for me this one missed the mark.
This is a very moody album, I think you wanted it to be a punchy rock album.
This album is literally labeled as Indie Rock record. Therefore it is a rock record. And it sucks. Big time.
king_of_ thorns well indie rock as a sub genre is very diverse, so it’s sound can range from let’s say The Microphones to The Strokes to Arcade Fire, all very different bands with sounds. It’s fine to dislike this album, I personally love it, but just because it’s an indie rock project doesn’t mean it has to sound a certain way

Copium-induced arctic monkeys fans when the band can't come up with something more creative despite reinventing themselves
I strongly disagree with this review. I actually really like the album!
It's not their best album by any means, but it's not nearly as bad as he makes it out to be.
Clearly this album is not a 2. It is pretty tame and even repetitive, but claiming that there isn't a catchy line in the whole thing...come on...The first time I listened to it, all the singles got burned into my mind and I couldn't get them out for a whole damn week!
Huge arctic monkeys fan here, i actually agree with anthony. This album is flat as fuck, repetitive and gutless. It doesn't matter if it's a huge commercial success, this album is sooooo bland. With this album the arctic monkeys became what they used to make fun of in the past. There ain't no romance around here no more.
what a poor review. It's not even meant to be a "Rock" album, which was basically the criteria that this review revolved around. So many things that the band has said prior and with this albums release indicates it had a heavy RnB, hip hop influence. They worked with Dr Dre, covering drake, in multiple interviews Alex points out the main influences etc. Yet because it's not as fast, ferocious or loud as their debut, they're expected to produce something that is meant to parallel that, when instead they've intended to go in a different direction, and they've pulled that off brilliantly.
This has aged well, it is kind of hilarious.
I’m here after NME called it the best album of the 2000s

Glad ya like it, but I haven't made it through that song once without falling asleep...
that song is possibly the worst ive heard from them

I'm going to disagree with you on this one. While I do enjoy the Arctic Monkeys' first album the most, who says that they have to play powerfully in each one? Artists are allowed to deviate in any way they want from their original stuff (just look at Fall Out Boy and Panic!), and this seems to be the Monkeys' turn in style.
Perhaps it's because I also enjoy limestone rock, shoegazing, and softer songs overall in addition to the more energetic ones, but I felt that AM turned out to be very solid and focused, doing great with the sound it was aiming for while still holding fast to the band's roots. Tracks like R U Mine and Arabella still have the old Arctic Monkeys influence and feel to them, while songs such as I Wanna Be Yours cause you to really listen and appreciate the calmer melodies and vocals, not to mention the meaningful lyrics.
Overall, I don't really think AM should be compared to its previous brethren, but taken in by the listener as its own entity and be viewed as such. Of course, one can't help BUT compare AM to the band's other music (as I'm sure we all have), but cut it some slack, because while the tracks within aren't as hard rock-ish, the toned down yet interestingly executed musical style is something that is to be greatly enjoyed.
It appears I'm approaching this two years late but regardless I'm just going to give my thoughts.
Why I liked/loved/liked AM
So when the ablum was initially released, I had only heard a few songs a couple of times while hearing 'Do I Wanna Know' all the time. I loved that song, but never ventured past getting it on my phone to be played every now and then. If it was late or I was thinking about a girl I'd play it and it would just capture that feeling of sexual tension I suppose. But anyways I listened to all of AM at one point, liked it, but then didn't stick with it because I still wasn't familiar with the Arctic Monkeys. I had only heard a couple of songs outside that album.
Then about 4 months ago or so I got the first two albums and just indulged. I'm a huge Strokes fan so I loved this side of Arctic Monkeys I had never heard before. Energy, youth, and damn good rock 'n roll. However, I still wanted that maturity that 'Do I Wanna Know' brought to the table. It was exciting knowing that throughout the next three albums I would see the transition. Humbug was an immediate change with 'My Propeller' and I got the next two albums without hesitation. I enjoyed what felt like a natural progression to me.
Then one day I just couldn't resist and listened to AM. I absolutely loved it. It felt like Arctic Monkeys finally got that confidence back from when they had just started, and that energy was back. Only this time the energy wasn't about going crazy and rocking out. It was about, in its simplest form, sex. It was about that "after midnight" feeling of wanting someone. Making a point to push aside the social barriers (just like the first album did) and focusing on the connection between two people. I felt that the Arctic Monkeys knew what they were doing. And they did.
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I Am Not: Breaking out with a new style and just going ham.
Favourite Worst Nightmare: Carrying on the momentum of the first while calming down a bit.
Humbug: A dive into new territory and a bit of experimentation. New found maturity bottled up.
Suck It and See: A continuation of their experimental confusion. Trying to find a new sound.
AM: Finally they learn how to connect maturity and energy with beaming confidence.
They're doing what they want, and I'll continue to respect that.
Also not every Arctic Monkeys fan is unreasonably defensive about why they like them. No need to attack an entire fanbase over some RUclips comments. That's silly. Everyone has their reasons for why they like or dislike a band. Just stop.
That was a long post. I respect your opinion, Symphony Nintendo.
+angus7021 loving the avatar
angus7021 awesome point of view. I absolutely agree. not only AM is About a post midnight sexual tension, it's about a Full atmosphere. It kind of reminds me of a 60s London rainy night ballad vibe and it's só satisfying to listen to when You're thinking About someone. It's like reading the mind of a desiring 20yo leather jacket undercut man. Kinda' like me sometimes... it's in my opinion a completely unique experience that is meant for a specific type of audience.
YES! That's also why I love the monkeys, they're still the same boys from Sheffield talking about moundane things, just every album a little more mature an older. It's organic, it's honest, it's a silent and kind of depressed slap in the face of pop music. Just as they did with myspace back in 2006.

Why'd You Only Review AM When You're High?
ehh. i liked it.
I have lost all respect for Fantano. sure, people can have opinions about music, but I think to a certain extent you can just be... wrong. I mean a 3/10? Really? He gave Michael Cera's album a higher rating than this. It actually just sounded more like he was complaining about how Arctic Monkeys doesn't sound the same as it used to, which really makes no sense because all music artists and bands progress over time. I mean, maybe if he actually spent time explaining WHY Arabella was a bad song or WHY he found none of the songs catchy, then I'd respect that. But I felt like he was just saying negative things about the album without any real support. This review wasn't even five minutes. That might be the shortest video I've seen on his channel. logically, a music reviewer should be able to spend as much time explaining why an album is bad as he would explaining why an album is good. this is just not the case. Instead, Fantano is just making himself look like an annoying hipster disagreeing with the album for the sake of disagreeing with the masses... sigh
What's with people and comparing reviews with Michael Cera's? He just didn't like it, and so did many many other people.
he did like it though. he liked it more than AM
No I'm talking about AM. Lots of people hated AM. Most music forums had a lot of hype for AM, and were completely let down when it got released. It's really weak.
Foreskin uhh... do you see the dislike bar on this video? I'd say most people enjoyed this album
"Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?" - Goodthony Guytano
this aged like a fine wine
This is the most split comment section I think I've ever seen.
What utter bollocks. Firstly, you've fallen into the classic "Oh I wish they'd made another WPSIATWIN" mistake, which for someone supposedly so musically knowledgeable is an unforgivable thing to say. That entire album is based around Turner's experiences growing up in the working class north of England. He lives in LA now. How on earth could he write about shitty wedding bands and bouncers and trying to jump taxis with an ounce of credibility and genuine feeling anymore? The energy of that album comes from the subject matter of his/their formative youthful experiences. Once you take that away (which the success of that album did) the musical direction of the next album is SHOULD begin to change. Secondly, anyone making a claim about a band ripping off another band's riff/melody needs to be very careful. The odds of a decent musician coming up with a similar sounding riff by sheer chance, or even picking up a riff from somewhere by chance having heard the original but not necessarily remembering it, are not unlikely. I'm not claiming that the similarities in the two songs are deliberate or that they're not - what I mean is that without having been in the room when this song was written, you have absolutely no grounds for claiming that something is "definitely" ripped off. The most you can say is "The two songs use the same chords in the chorus" and as a credible journalist that's all you should say. In any case, it's two chords in the chorus - hardly a bastardisation of the entire structure of the song is it? Thirdly, I just can't reconcile myself with your claims that this album is in any way cold, calculated or tame. I just can't understand how you could think that. Every song to me oozes purpose, the trudging menace of Do I Wanna Know, the almost hip-hop-esque beat of Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High, the lustful whisper in the verse of Arabella. I don't know ... maybe thinking of this as a "Rock" album isn't quite fair. Arctics are no NIN or QOTSA, though they've obviously flirted with that direction in the past. For my money, this album owes more to Indie and Hip-Hop than it does to straight up Rock music. If you're listening to this album and expecting massive riffs and distortion everywhere then I can see how you'd be let down, but describing it as gutless because it doesn't adhere to YOUR perception of the genre that you've arbitrarily assigned to it BEFORE EVEN LISTENING TO IT is not fair. Finally, reviewing this album and not exploring the lyrics is a huge oversight on your part. Now, I can see how Alex Turner's lyrics could be a little bit lost in translation, they're still very grounded in British slang and culture, but surely lines like "The nights are mainly made for saying things that you can't say tomorrow day" are deserving of some exploration? It's a simple lyrics that's delivered in a meaningful way, to an excellent melody, with just a twinge of Sheffield slang that makes this, and other Arctics albums, resonate all the more with their oldest and most dedicated fans. To sum up then, for a lack of background knowledge of the band, for holding this album to your own arbitrary standard of how it should sound before even hearing it, and for gross oversights in your exploration of its structure and composition, I give your review a 4/10. You need to leave your preconceptions at the door and dig a little deeper into the structures of an album, but keep your head straight and do your research and I think you've got a future ahead of you.
joec1211 Issa good review, Issa good channel, Issa good opinion
TL;DR
I appreciate how many fucking words you put into this but it's anthonys opinion, don't try to change it because you disagree
mad?
Lmao what a fucking loser.
For a start, the maturity. When the first album was recorded Alex Turner was a 19 year old living in the north of England, now he's a 28 year old living in New York City, of course he (and by extension the rest of the Arctics) have matured, what do you expect? For me it would be weird if an older and clearly more mature guy was still producing songs like I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor.
Secondly, the definition of this being a rock album. It's not, stop saying it is, because it just isn't. It's like criticising I don't know a long distance runner for being crap in a 100m sprint. They may look similar and have similar traits or be produced using similar methods, but they're still very different beings.
For me this album is about those sultry times, as Josh Homme put it 'after midnight' moments. Especially times you may share with a special someone in an adult relationships (which once again, is something a 28 year old would know about), go listen to Knee Socks or I Wanna Be Yours, study the lyrics and you might understand.
I loved the Arctic Monkeys' previous efforts and I love this one all the same, even though it's totally different to anything else they've done. If you want to go listen to a harsh, catchy, sweaty, quick rhythm rock album performed with conviction, then go find the next bunch of 19-21 year olds from the UK. They'll no doubt be someone fitting the bill on the festival scene, The Vaccines have probably done it the last 3 years but once again they're getting older now and album 3 might perhaps be a bit more mellow. But don't go to a band much more mature and simply wanting to branch out and try something new.
But it IS a rock album. What else would it be?
Well what do you mean by 'rock album'? The rock genre itself, like any art genre, has it's own many sub-genres, which artists are free to move around in at their free will. Surely as someone who studies and reviews music from a range of genres you should know and appreciate that.
I'd say this is more pyschadelic rock or soul rock than the more straight indie rock the first 2 albums are. To dismiss a piece of work on a very weak and washy definition of genre is poor for me.
But if you're simply going to say that all rock music should sound like Black Sabbath or the Rolling Stones or a specific era of the Beatles etc, take your pick, I'm not going to have this discussion with you. I mean let's take The Beatles as an example, people class them as a rock band, and so they should, but you cannot compare Hard Day's Night against Sgt Peppers against Abbey Road. They are all totally different and it shouldn't be a surprise that they each reflect the time and lives of the artists who created those works at those specific times. It's part of being an artist.
theneedledrop No it isn't! You can't list some albums like rock albums. It's a conglomeration of different genres that we may list as britpop. It's too diverse!
"maturity"
+andrewtheblade Exactly. This album is pop, rock, soul... I'd even say there's some Motown influences in there.

truck ad music fans seething rn
It’s funny seeing Americans go on as if AM is the greatest thing they’ve ever heard and that the album defines the arctic monkeys then you have all the UK fans who believe the first two albums were the best and define the arctic monkeys. You see Alex as a confident biker jacket wearer and we see him as a teen with a squeaky voice. They have to be one of the only bands who are able to do that
I mean you essentially described blur as well
I never thought an opinion could be wrong, until now...
I didn't like it at all at first, but this album has very, very much grown on me. I feel bad because it took a big while, but finally I have to say that I love it.
Usually my long time favorites are like that. I mean something about the album at first annoyed me. Then I kinda had to listen it all over again to remember exactly what the frustration felt like and bam, suddenly I love the album.
RainyGary I completely agree. Though I wouldn't say this particular album is a long time favourite for me, most of my favourite albums are ones I hated on first listen. The first example that springs to mind of that is Pinkerton. Such an awesome album, I can't believe I hated it before!
True, this is still pretty new. You know, I used to hate Radiohead. I mean almost every song except Creep. Never heard that one before, gotta give it a listen!
interesting - I've never heard that before. I also didn't like La Dispute the first time I heard it, as a matter of fact I hated the sound, but now it's grown on me so much, I'm seeing them live! And I cannot freaking wait!
Do give Pinkerton a listen, it's an incredibly sick album. A bit emo, but it's ok because it's very specific, not ridiculously vague like, say, Linkin Park or Bring Me The Horizon.
Yeezy Smalls Yeah i think too many people are not true fans of music in the sense that they do the pop thing of 1 or 2 listens and then "nah, not for me" but most people into rock, at least for me, i cant really judge an album until between 3- 5 listens cover to cover (when its stuff like radiohead, tool etc especially). as you said its often albums or tracks i barely think anything of at 1st that i really start to think "ok this is genius"
Humbug is genius. If you've properly listened to that album in depth you'll know what I mean
Forreal
white girls don listen to humbug because it aint pop. World is not just
Humbug is definitely their strongest in terms of lyricism, maybe even songwriting, and is a personal favorite , but I do feel like there's a lot of moments where it holds itself back and comes off pretty underwhelming. A good number of songs tend to have a decent progression but with pretty meager pay offs that leave a lot to be desired. Especially with songs like Dangerous Animals, Secret Door, Potion Approaching, and Fire and the Thud. (Despite loving all these songs lyrically, especially Fire and the Thud)
Crying Lightning, Dance Little Liar, Cornerstone, and Pretty Visitors are nothing short of fantastic though. Even the B-sides for this album are amazing. Almost every single track on the My Propeller and Cornerstone EPs could have replaced like half the songs on Humbug and it would have probably surpassed their first two albums for me.
AM is genius.
"I can't even say that AM is a more commercial move for Arctic Monkeys..."
well Wikipedia says another words:
The album received critical acclaim from music critics and featured in many year-end lists as one of the best of 2013. It was nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize for best album, hailed the Best Album of 2013 by NME magazine, and featured at number 449 on NME's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. COMMERCIALLY, AM HAS BECOME ONE OF ARCTIC MONKEYS' MOST SUCCESSFUL ALBUMS TO DATE , topping charts in several countries, and reaching top ten positions in many more. In the United Kingdom, Arctic Monkeys broke a record with AM, becoming the first independent-label band to debut at number one in the UK with their first five albums. The album is also considered the band's breakthrough in America. The single "Do I Wanna Know?" was the first song by the band to enter the Billboard Hot 100.
AM is also one of the UK's best-selling vinyl albums of the decade, selling 73,000 units
Wow I'm completely shocked by this negative review. I've been listening to AM everyday on repeat and loving it
It's amusing to me how many of you on here worship Fantano so much that you feel you need to rush to his defense every time someone disagrees with a review. Almost every comment on here in support of AM is followed by the same reply about how they're "just a 12 year old Arctic Monkeys fanboy who doesn't know anything about music because they only listen to the mainstream". I mean, seriously, who cares if the band has gained some new fans recently? I'd say there's a few too many needledrop "fanboys" on here that blindly agree with every single opinion the guy has and for some reason can't tolerate someone going against him. As for the album, I think its excellent and a great representation of how Arctic Monkeys have continuously evolved their sound from each album to the next. I love their first two albums and will continue to listen to them just as much as AM, but songs like "Do I Wanna Know?", "One for the Road", and "Knee Socks" are some of the best they have ever written. It's your opinion so you have every right to dislike the album, but I just think it's a bit lazy and narrow-minded as a reviewer to dismiss it as "gutless" just because it didn't have the same energy and heavy riffs of their previous work. It's pretty clear that wasn't the mood they were going for on this one.
Jordan Johnson Finally, a comment I can agree with. Although sadly, I couldn't even bring myself to enjoy much from their previous works. :/ AM's sound just speaks to me more, I guess. But yeah, it's shocking how such a praised LP is being utterly trashed in this comment section. I guess a lot of their old fans just really hate the idea that a lot of newer fans prefer the sound that AM has to their older stuff.
Jordan Johnson Nobody cares about the people who just disagree with his reviews. Hell, I disagree with him fairly frequently. We only "rush to his defense" when somebody insults him for having a different opinion. "Fuck you Anthony Fantano, you're not allowed to dislike this album because I enjoyed it and so did a lot of other famous reviewers."
How is it lazy and narrow minded to call something that doesn't have any guts "gutless"? This album takes no risks what so ever. Every track sounds like it was structured specifically to be radio friendly indie pop. There's nothing on this album that hasn't been done better by any other artists or even Arctic Monkeys themselves
@@despondentmikestoklasa3679 that something is done to sound on radios and be digestible by most does not make it bad, there are many songs with that structure that are great and a good example of commercial music with quality. Cheers ;)
But now you’re labelling everyone who disagrees as blinded fanboys. AM does not come close to the beauty that was their debut album, that album smokes this one in every aspect. It doesn’t reuse the same time signatures and chord progressions nearly as much, it has a youthful and punchy energy and it is overall much more creative. AM has a great start up, I personally really enjoy the first 4 tracks or so, but the album gets very repetitive very fast.
Damn. Fantano looks kinda weird giving this a 3 now that some time has passed and it's settled more. He doesn't even mention "Do I Wanna Know", "I Want It All" or "Why'd You Call Me..."
"I want it all" is the worst one, same chords over and over, boring.
***** K :T
that are the bad grammar :T
The only thing Do I Wanna Know has going for it is its riff.
Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High has a catchy hook and a nice baseline, but the song itself is really corny, like super corny Jesus Christ. This whole album is dude.
And I Want It All... There's no sugar coating this one, it's just trash. One of the most dull, lifeless and forgettable songs Arctic Monkeys have ever put out, I'm serious dude. I would have even taken I Wanna Be Yours over that steaming pile.
well thats because the album is bad, what did you expect?
Unlike the review, the album is aging very well
Well, they are losing energy, but this album was great.
this is one of the best albums to come out in so long, Alex Turners lyrics are so heavy and witty. the instrumentals on this album are so far beyond me, every song is so catchy too. they have matured so much over the years, and this album proves it
The album had so much emotion, passion, dreamy vocals and guitar and some really cool riffs. Musicians evolve over time and in this case I think it's for the better. I love their previous albums as well but they're very samey.
Reishin this whole album is just as if not more samey than their whole discography.
+RUclips Account I was comparing their previous albums to each other, not the songs in them. It's very natural for an album to have a concept/theme.
Reishin so you're gonna sit here and tell me that piledriver waltz is essentially a similar song to the view from the afternoon. I don't understand what you're conveying
Reishin you’re going to criticise the albums for sounding kinda the same when AM is just the same song over and over again?
It's meant to be a SEXY album ooh yeahh
Joaquim Del Blanco why is this comment so funny?
To be honest, when R U Mine was actually released, it was kind of refreshing to hear something that was just a pretty simple rock song, the likes of which the mainstream was really missing at the time. I thought that Arabella also rocks pretty hard, with the slower start leading into a heavier riff (2 chords taken from Sabbath, but changed it up enough, for me at least), and catchy lyrics keeping to the tradition of Alex Turner's witty play on words (mind you, I don't care much for the bridge). The rest of the album had some good ones as well, Snap Out of It and Knee Socks being catchy, and I definitely caught myself singing Fireside more than I thought I would. I also think that one should consider the fact that they claim to have been influenced by a lot of hip hop for this album, which might explain the calculated and predictable nature of the album. But hey, I get why people don't like this album also, I just thought it was catchy to my ears. Thanks for making album reviews entertaining!
Sorry, but I really disagree with all that you said, well, maybe it can be the most ''known'' album and they became a bit comercial, but most of the people say that AM it's their best album, because it's like a more sophisticated and mature sound, I'm an Arctic Monkeys' big fan, and obviously I'll defend them always, but everyone's opinion is differente, I respect yours, and I wanted to say mine. ;)
Way to overlook what has become a classic album.
***** Arabella isn't even their song. Listen to War Pigs by Black Sabbath. Completely ripped off the middle parts of that song.
One song got radio play and a feature on watch mojo, don't get too ahead of yourself. Even their flagship single do I wanna know is sooooooo forgettable
i can't tell if this sarcasm
***** I applaud you for liking your own objectively wrong opinions
It is a shit album. Got boring fast. Needs to be like Humbug. God tier album
2:47
“...just an ironically titled snoozer piano ballot...”
that’s prob what he’s going to say for TBH+C.
I love this album. Way better than the inconsistent, odd Suck it and see. I do agree the tone is different, i feel this album is more smooth and sexy I guess. Seems to rely more on catchy little guitarwork and falsetto backing vocals. It does feel more minimalist and subtle, but yeah i like it a lot. I dont get your hate for this album but to each their own.
Throughout this review I wanted to hurt you more and more. I mean, you can have your opinions but you are so harsh! No memorable riffs you say? Did you even listen to "Do I Wanna Know?" Also, "R U Mine?" is probably in my top ten Arctic Monkeys songs of all time! The songwriting in this is also fantastic.
You do understand that the enjoyment of music is entirely subjective right? Anthony didn't like it. Nobody is forcing you to watch his videos. I have to agree with him though, this album is hot dog shit.
You thought this was unjustly harsh? Dude, you should read a Robert Christgau review sometime.
I thought AM sucked
Ughhh... what a *poser*.
Not a single song on this album is in the top 10 Arctic Monkeys songs of all time. In fact if you place any song after Favourite Worst Nightmare on that list you are a moron. I like AM. But holy shit is it boring. Your comment angers me.
Used to disagree with this review heavily
Now I fucking can't stand the album anymore
It has not aged well
it has. lmao
nonsense. year 10. still goin.
It's not fair to judge the album based on your nostalgia or merit of a past album. I understand your points, but their almost invalidated because you aren't judging it on it's own, but with a sort of "guilt my association" mentality.
I can enjoy most of their albums because I don't carry any baggage from anything, and listen to each song as it's own separate thing. Saying "B" is not good in general because "A" is something else is almost a fallacy. It's like saying you don't like a rap song because classical music is more enjoyable to you instead of judging a rap song by it's own merit.
talks about logical fallacies and then produces a retarded analogy. pottery
I like this album, you don't, and it's okay. There is nothing else to be said.
Its their worst album. I think Anthony was a bit harsh but tbh. Its really boring, repetitive and lame. Half of the album i skip because it's just so boring. Their newer album is wayyyyy more better than AM.
Idk I’d say that Humbug is their worst with their debut and sophomore albums as their best.
now ur just trying to be different
I disagree, Anthony. I will not elaborate further because my opinion is greater than yours.
I remember watching Melons top albums of 2013 and was wondering like wtf, where is AM? did he ever listen to this album? And then i find this video.
Fanboyism and hate is clear in this comment section. Too much I'd say.
I completely disagree with the review and I am no fanboy
No fanboy to the extent that I only started listening to them after AM
I know what he's getting at but he's viewing it wrong, expecting it to be something it's not (if you'll excuse the pun)
Yeah Am is probably my least fave album of theirs, but to say there's not one catchy line/riff in any song in the whole album?
That's crazy talk, its been months now and I still can't stop listening to Arabella
Lugiazul - Canal de Respaldo and in like to dislike ratio
As far as I can tell it’s entirely people saying “I like this album”. That’s all it takes to be a fanboy and hater now?
I usually agree with your reviews, but here I must respectfully disagree. In my opinion, the Monkeys have only improved since WPSIATWIN (my favorite still being Humbug), and this is a great album.
While is disagree heavily, I understand your opinion. Some of these AM fans are just... wow.
Also forgot Alex Turner said "don't believe the hype."
"And in my humble opinion..."
Respect his opinion guys. :I
My favorite of the Arctic Monkeys is Favourite Worst Nightmare, then the When the Sun Goes down EP, then AM. I don't think AM deserves the bad rep, I get think it was more safe with it's music, not taking many risks, but other than that it was pretty solid. I liked those tracks a lot.
And as for the whole Arabella/War Pigs thing, you are talking about 2 notes. That is not a ripoff. That is 2 notes.
***** Um... and here I thought AM was miles ahead of anything else they'd done in the past. And nowhere near "safe," with its melding of so many different musical styles. Sorry guys, but I seem to be the only one who's of the opinion that stuff like their first album really wasn't all that good. In fact, it sounded an awful lot like something my sister's boyfriend's shitty garage band would make (don't tell him I said that). It just doesn't click with me I guess. I also have a hard time taking the people who say that AM was "slower" seriously. Maybe it was by like, a fraction of a percent, but I would never label that album as slow. A lot of the tracks on it, in fact, get me really pumped whenever I listen to them. Overall, I don't care if "true" fans want the "old" Arctic Monkeys back. Screw their preferences, I want them to keep making more stuff like AM. But of course that's just my opinion on the matter.
Josh Leitzel The lyrics and singing was top notch, the instruments not so much. I know because I learned to play the entire album on guitar and they aren't that difficult. The instrument's purpose was to highlight the vocals. Nothing else in my opinion. I'm not saying it's bad but the style is new only to the arctic monkeys, not music itself. If you want unique altogether, check out their third album, humbug. Like AM, it went a different path and the instruments 9 times out of 10 served to highlight the vocals, but the main difference between the two was that Humbug was pretty unique to music as a whole and not just for the band playing it.
Well, I don't think I can objectively argue against someone who's much more familiar with instrumentation than I'll ever be. But for me personally, the beats and riffs sounded great. I could see how they could be described as simplistic though, as it's not hard for me to pick out each beat within a certain song.
I have heard Humbug, which I group with all the others as "enjoyable." But it's not the Arctic Monkeys I fell in love with. I know, call me a rebel. I'm like the exact opposite of those obnoxious people who always prefer artists' first albums to their latest ones.
10 years later… still wrong
All the songs in this album were really catchy to me. I had a really great time with the songs and it's really hard to put myself in the shoes of people who thought the music was boring or something like that. I don't know. Everything clicked for me.
Based Fandango. NME and tumblrites got #BTFO
YouMeAndTea wow that was fucking great
Mark Kovacs I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not
YouMeAndTea since they went downhill it wasn't sarcasm
wladdaimpala88 Fuck tumblr, I just like music that sounds good in my ear holes. Which AM does.
Josh Leitzel AM is definitely one of my favourite albums of all time, oorgggaaasssmms in my ears
I agree with 99% of your album reviews, because I have thought the same about the albums. But this one made me cry. Sure it wasn't their best album, but they aimed for the target they hit, and they couldn't keep making "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not." Good for them to try something with less edge to it, but once you listen to the album a couple times its hard not to appreciate it.
I don’t think he understands the appeal of this album. Lmao
Their best selling album ever, right? Some great love songs on here (Arabella, R U Mine). Some of the lyrics have great imagery.
It's a solid album nothing that amazing, but compared to a lot of other releases it really shines. I enjoyed it a lot.
I love this album! Recently saw them in concert and it was the best concert I ever attended.
This Arctic Monkeys album here... it’s not good or bad. It just is.
Cap
while I agree isn't not their best album, it's probably their worst, but I love Do I Wanna Know and I think it's one of their better tracks
What is really annoying is that some of you only like this album because its the Arctic Monkeys. Try listening to it thinking its not the Arctic monkeys, because this album is not as good as many people have made out it to be.
I respect your opinion, and whilst AM is one of their weaker albums, it’s still probably one of the best of the decade, and if not, at least one of the most iconic
If you were to at least like one of the songs from this album, I'm surprised it wasn't No 1 Party Anthem. That song paints a beautiful story in me head despite it being just a piano ballad. Wondered if you listened to Alex Turner's solo album and what you maybe think of that?
Did you actually listen to the album or what?
yep.
I don't absolutely hate AM (I'd probably give it a 3.5) but 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' and 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' are significantly better albums that really highlight the band's talent and songwriting abilities imo
I remember listening to this all summer when this came out with my old friends, amazingly good times
Worst opinion Anthony has ever had.
im pretty sure youre just trolling everyone on these reviews
**several people are typing**
Jesus Christ, I thought I didn’t like this album but you made my mild disappointment sound like ass kissing in comparison
Accurate
I just got a ad for a car and the music sounded like this 😂
Ha wow commenting on this video 2 years later but here's how I feel about AM:
AM is just evolving and trying to keep it fresh with new styles that appeal to today's audience... just as any band would try to reinvent their sounds to survive in the music industry. The riffs are not bursting with energy but the tunes are catchy. The beats have more of an R&B/Hip-Hot influence. Maybe AM isn't for rock enthusiasts anymore but for indie rock or pop lovers... One of my favorite things about the Arctic Monkeys is how clever their lyrics are. You can find many double entendres. Arabella has the coolest lyrics... and an intriguing cosmic theme. Each line is very descriptive and creates the perfect persona of an exotic, 70's headed muse that the song-writer is mesmerized by. It's unique, mysterious, and sophisticated. From "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" to "Favourite Worst Nightmare" to "AM", I feel the Arctic Monkeys have been getting more artistic and alluring with their music.
Whitney W. Humbug was their peak imo
I saw them live and it was possibly my favorite rock performance I've seen
Jealous!
This is the kind of guy who complains when there isn't constant action in a film
Here in 2019 the album holds up very well lmao
this album is my least favorite AM album. I do like a few songs like Do I Wanna Know, R U Mine, One For The Road and Arabella but really songs like No 1 Party Anthem and Mad Sounds put me to sleep. And i know for a fact that they still have that energy due to the fact that in concert, they play their old songs with more passion than ever. This album was disappointing but had a few songs that I will remember.
