    We also came in with the mindset, winter was going to be horrible, was not the case. We move here in the middle of winter, we love it.

    Hi ... I have lived in Fairbanks, An. For a little over 6 years and still here. There are things the lower 48 has that we do not have here and that is dollar stores. We do have franchise restaurants here like, McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Dennys, ETC. My 1st year here was missing family but u get use to it. You learn to navigate through Fairbanks and get to know the places we do have and really how to "save" money on a budget income. We have learned to grow our own produce, bake our own bread, etc. U save money this way. We also make our own apple sauce, jams n jellies, soups, etc. I was use to living on $300 a month in lower 48 (Michigan) and we moved here and I still shop like I was yet in the lower 48. It takes time to adjust to Alaska's kind of living but it's beautiful here, the ppl are kind. How can u NOT like it here, lol. Enjoy and welcome to Alaska. Also, here we can homeschool our children without regret of doing it. We "hibernate" during the winter. You will put on a little weight as well for the extra body heat. We have never had to use "winter tires-studded", it was always all season tires. As far as boots for us adults, I have never wore winter boots to and from the car to house or store. I wore sneakers. I had boots just in case. Watch Somersinalaska family, they have tons of videos on the did n don't of Alaska weather, etc.

    Its normal to be 20 degrees warmer in the hills compared to the official Fairbanks temperature down at the airport.
    Its normal to be calm with low humidity so comfortable for running/cross country skiing/ fat tire mountain biking on most winter days.
    In interior Alaska, its normal not to have road salt, thus vehicles do not rust out (I have a 1993 F150 that will last another 30 years).
    Safe driving is normal most of the winter due to dry sugar snow. (Icy down in Anchorage is different than interior AK).
    The shortest day in Fairbanks is >t 5 hours of visible light (civil twilight).
    Unbelievable northern lights displays can occur from Sept to April.
    It normal to get sugar snow that is easy to plow and fun to ski in.
    Long winters (Nov-March) so you have to love outdoors and snow sports if your going to stay for 30+ years like we have.

    Hi, thanks for the video , informative. About the chain restaurants , im in the lower 48 and there are plenty of them and I dont like going to them . Its nice to have restaurants indigenous to your new area. I cant wait to move there because it is different . I love it. I live in a big city and theres people everywhere and the same old stores everywhere, so places like AK are nice. It makes you appreciative. I dont want to move some place that is the same where I came from, what would be the point in moving and I dont want to make a place like the place that I came from so I can appreciate the newness of an area- that is truly why people move- for something different. Thanks for sharing.

    • @celizabethkelly
      @celizabethkelly  4 года назад +2

      Mosquitos are pretty bad until the dragon flies hatch and eat them all. North Pole has worse bugs for sure. We are super fortunate that or property has no standing water, creeks or permafrost so we have very few mosquitos. I have not traveled to other parts of the state so I'm not sure how it compares. It has not been terrible. It's just a trade. Some states have cockroaches and we don't. It's not so bad.

    How are the schools in Fairbanks? Or is home school the best way to go. Do they bus the kids to school 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️Are there furniture stores in Fairbanks are they good .or should you ship your furniture there to Alaska 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️

    • @celizabethkelly
      @celizabethkelly  4 года назад +1

      Schools are okay but a large percentage does homeschool. The state support for homeschool is incredible here. There are school buses running every day and I have never seen snow cancelled due to weather. There are very few furniture options up here but there are some. It depends on your budget mostly. Shipping is expensive and the stores are expensive 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Occasionally, I like to entertain the idea of moving to Alaska, but I live in (basically) a desert and I'm not sure I would survive with temperatures below freezing, much less with negative temperatures. haha Your video makes it seem like it isn't as crazy as it sounds for me. Great video!

      I totally understand! It would often get to 110 degrees in the summer where we lived before but today is -30 here and we are just fine! It's a change but the people and landscape is so beautiful I could never go back. It is totally worth a vacation if nothing else!

    • @phunkmunkified
      @phunkmunkified 3 года назад

      Maybe RUclips recommending your video was kismet! We went to the snow for a day recently and it wasn't too bad. I didn't feel cold at all wearing my snow gear and the kids said the same. Walking through the snow was hard and I wasn't a fan, but I told my husband that I could live in it as long as I don't have to go outside often. haha I'm not sure it's fair to move someplace where I all but refuse to go out while he has to work in it, though. I'm not sure if it would be "survivor's guilt," but I'd feel some type of way as he left for work every morning. 😆

    Is it fair to say that white people are better equipped to handle cold? You can run the store without a coat at -22. The lowest it can get here in Nairobi, Kenya is 11 degrees, even the coldest places don't go below 5, at this point most people are heavily tucked as it's literally freezing.

    • @celizabethkelly

      Humidity plays a big roll in that. Fairbanks has crazy low humidity. Snow here is not wet. You can brush it off your clothes and they don't get wet. I'll take -10 with 15% humidity over a rainy 40 degree day.
