I did my V -belt yesterday, almost went wrong because the engine almost slipped from the jack. Luckily, I have a 1.1, so I could lift the engine while my Neighbor moved the jack in the right position. I didn't remove the alternator, just slack the lower bolt and you can move it back a little bit. Sometimes it's hard to get the alternator back in the right position because a new V-belt has different tension than an old belt. Just fiddle a bit with the adjustment bolt on the alternator until you get it in the right position, and then adjust it back until you have the right amount of tension on the belt. My timing belt is ok for just another 15.000km, but this video will help me in the future with at least the timing belt. I have done it once on a Fiat Punto fase 1 and that went wrong very quickly because of the alignment on the Gearbox side of the engine, I had to use an extra pair of eyes to watch the other side with the alignment and finally I got it. With the Peugeot 106 it's as easy as it should be, great car!!!👌
There is no need to unbolt and disconnect the alternator ! Just slacken the bolts and the alternator can move backwards, making it possible to remove the belt.
I have Peugeot 106 1.1, but in my car completely different engine design. The alternator is at the top of the engine, and where the author in this video has an alternator, I have a hydraulic power steering pump
Hello, I've messed up my timing belt change. So, i've normally removed auxiliary belt from the alternator and crankshaft pulley, afterwards i've removed the top timing belt cover, afterwards i've locked camshaft (pin in the hole), and forgot to lock the flywheel for the crankshaft. When I tried to remove 3 screws for the outer crankshaft pulley that drives auxiliary belt, by mistake instead of using the impact gun, i've tried with the wrench, and because of it, the crankshaft moved couple of teeth under the belt counter-clock wise. I didn't even realise what was happening behind the lower plastic cover because I was trying to remove that pulley so that I can reach the lower plastic cover behind it. Now since I know that I moved crankshaft counter-clock wise, and that it is most certanly out of the time/timing, is there an way to bring up the engine in the "phase"/timing without tearing it apart. The belt is still one, but crankshaft skipped like god only knows how many teeth, while waterpump/camshaft didn't move at all (belt is firm/fixed). Also I did not turn on the engine so there is still no damage (yet). Engine is Peugeot TU1JP, 8 valves, single camshaft. Any help is welcome.
Hey, there's no mark on these from what I've found. i had to use a little tipex to mark where it was, on top of that, I locked the flywheel and camshaft.
You were working underneath your car which was just held up on a trolley jack on uneven ground. Mad! You needed to use axle stands to support it properly for your safety. If for any reason that trolley jack failed or the car slipped off it as you have not chocked the wheels you could be seriously injured if it fell on you. I am thinking you also jacked the car up on the engine not using the jacking points. To remove the top engine mounting to get the timing cover off and access to the water pump you need to support and slightly raise the engine using a jack but just the engine, not the whole car with all it's weight on the sump or gearbox housing. Fail. You don't say how much tension to put on the belt and how to assess it. It should be a deflection of about 6 mm on the belt mid way between the crank and cam wheel or you should just be able to twist this section through about 80-90 degrees without too much force. And you don't show how to move the tensioner bearing to tension the belt? Also you turn the engine over many times with the spark plugs out not only to check the belt is installed correctly but to allow it to sit properly on all the pulleys before you start the engine. You should have changed the water pump as well. It is a false economy not to. A replacement Gates cam belt kit with tensioner and water pump only costs just over £50.
Alex Morgan please see 15:38 You will see the car is supported by axle stands. I also did replace the water pump, You will see old water pump at the end of the video. I'm new to making RUclips videos and yes I should have made it better. I'm not stupid enough to go under a vehicle without appropriate safety, e.g. axle stands. I used a Jack with a block of wood to left the engine up and down to gain better space while doing the belt. Thanks for the feedback.
Well I didn't get as far as 15:38 let alone 36:52. Maybe I'm being a little harsh but safety is so important especially when you are making films showing work on something that could potentially injure you if not done safely. Sorry missed your replacement of the water pump. At first you didn't seem too bothered about replacing it so gave me the impression you weren't going to as I didn't see you replace it before you put the new belt on. Anyway all good. Keep making your films you present well.

Alex Morgan it’s £54 for a Gates cambelt, tensioner and waterpump set. I’ve just got mine today ready to do the cambelt on my 106 Quiksilver.
