Left 34 years ago to go to University in Hertfordshire. Coming home to see my folks has always been bittersweet as I saw Newcastle slowly but surely degrade. I was there last week and was shocked and appalled at the amount of closed shops (Roebuck shuttered) and the ironic signage from Newcastle-under-Lyme council promising that they are "Investing in your future"!. What will they do. Also what is the plan with the land where the council offices were that are knocked down. WHEN?! EXACTLY?!

Yet another informative vlog from a well spoken narrator.
Would I be alone in thinking that the high percentage of (Newcastle and also the Six Towns) Turkish barbers, nail bars, and vape shops (considering their close proximity, and foot-fall ratio) are 'fronts' for unscrupulous activities?

You most definitely would not be alone In that thought 👍it amazes me that the average person on the street can see these shops for what they are but them In positions of authority seem to be none of the wiser? Why are HMRC not all over these shops taking a look at the books.

I grew up around Castle. It all seemed quite normal until I moved to Leeds in 2010 and it took over a year to adjust to the difference. Part of me misses Castle and Stoke. Everything there always felt so familiar. But it's not a healthy place. The people there are somehow at once the nicest and meanest, toughest and softest people I've ever met.

Thank you for showing what Newcastle is like today, it shocked me, I heard recently, Clark’s, WH Smith we’re closing, your video showed a lot of the shops I was familiar with closed. The stones used to be vibrant, now in a very sorry state, and the civic offices demolished, very glad to see Wrights still going. Very glad I retired to North Wales from the Civic offices at 60. Hanley and Crewe also look in a sorry state. It’s very sad to see. Just thinking of some of the old names, Pauldons, Henry Whites, Blacks, Marsdons, Brockleys, Brassingtons that are no longer there.

I remember around ten years ago, I went on a works Christmas meal at an Indian restaurant in N-U-L. It was my first and last foray in what’s known as “Castle”. After the meal had ended we decided to go for a few drinks in the towns local pubs. On the way out of the restaurant my work colleague said to me “you do get a better class of person in Newcastle (Under Lyme) opposed to Hanley”. We walked around the corner and to my amazement there were two youths fighting in the street who were worse for ware due to the obligatory over drinking. I couldn’t help but laugh at the situation. I then decided to end the night prematurely and go home. My memories of N-U-L. 😂

I lived in Castle between 1988 and 2007 (first in the Westlands, then in May Bank), and whenever I go back it seems to get worse every time, with more stuff closed and demolished.
Back in 1989 when I was at school (Sneyd High - I believe it's changed its name several times since I left), we had a class project about how to improve the town centre. My suggestion was to knock it all down and start again. Laughed out of the class, obviously, but it seems I was merely a third of century before my time.

I was born on red street in ches last year i was riding a pedal bike to work every day to castle down the a34 in one year I had my bike stolen from outside my place of work just across the market from cash converters . I had someone in a mask try to push me off while I was on my way home so he could steal my new bike . And the final straw was getting blocked by about 6 lads who decided to show me their knife collection in exchange for my new new bike . I have a driving license but buying and running a car was expensive but after 3 bikes and countless taxi and bus tickets it actually works out cheaper so I got a shitbox rover 25 for £400 and used that for about a week until it got broken into in the multistory car park behind the cinema and a replacement window cost me nearly as much as the car I have had to quit my job and get one in a slightly less crime ridden hellscape . It's failing so much because you can't regularly go there without getting mugged or attacked if you travel there everyday the possibility of somthing happening to you is so great that people just left and now everything is closing and it's more overrun with druggies and gangs

While i agree about the amount of shops closing.you called merrial street depressing and yes it is butyou failed to say that part of it where the empty shops are is to be knocked down and rebuilt.unfortunatly itsthe council to be blamed for how there dpending the money.i believe they are knocking one of the multi story car parks down to be replaced with another costing about 40 million.i wouldlike to know who is going to use them there are not enough people coming into the town to warrent one let alone two.but Newcastle is a nice town despite whats happening .perhaps people think of it as posh because of the Royal charter it was given and its a old market town.but drive around outside the main areas of stoke on trent and there are some lovley areas.its swings and roundabouts.every town .city in the Country has got areas that are run down.and don't forget internet shopping has done a lot towards closing a lot of these shops down.
