    Oh my god! You finally showed my first guitar. That Gibson Melody Maker in Pelham blue. My mom bought it for me in 1967 when I was 13 years old. I think she paid $200. Wow, $5k today! I am now 69 years old and still have it and cherish it! Even though I have many more Gibson Les Pauls and SG’s. That guitar will always be first in my heart and will never be sold!
    PS - she also bought me a 1961 Fender Brownface Pro, which I still have and use.
    I hope everyone appreciates a Mom like that. We didn’t have that kind of money, but she made it happen to encourage greater ambitions in me.

    "As you all know, I’ve had the guitar since 1974 and technically it’s been for sale ever since… That’s what happens when you own a vintage Les Paul!
    "However, I have had some constructive conversations with my family and they feel it should stay with me for a bit longer, and so I have withdrawn it from a possible sale… I hope this improves your moods."

    correction @ 2.35 it is not a smiley face but actually the initials e c short for Eric Clapton! If you read the info on the ATB listing before it was pulled it told the story; After Eric's "The Beano" les paul got stolen he was in the habit of putting his initials on his guitars from then on. As he owned this ,albeit briefly, before Bernie he scratched his initials on it - if you closely at 2.35 you can see the initials e c. As I say this was the story on the listing before he pulled it from sale:)

    Part of the secret to this guitar is the overwound neck pickup. It will turn any amp from mild to mud! So when I built my 58 (took me 10 year's) all vintage correct between 56 and 60 I made sure I had 2 overwound PAF pickups. They interact with the volume controls much better. Aloha

    Happened to be in at ATB last week when they were going through some of these guitars - got a hold of the es345 but can't say I liked it too much - the gibson tenor on the other hand was unbelievably nice - but the price is very heavy - guess you are paying more than double for the artist connection - but it's a belter!

  • @andyhayes7828

    Imo, the BEANO ( which Jobo let be known is 'out there') and Ace Frehley's (as used on 'Strutter '78' from double platinum and his solo album, etc,etc) are about the best recorded '59's that I've heard ( No offense to Peter Greenbaum but Gary Moore tracked that guitars greatest moments ( 'Still in love with you' , ' With Love' , etc). So I say,
    1) Gary Moore's '59
    2) The 'Beano'
    3) The ' Frehley Burst'

    Writing or scratching your name in the cavity covers is quite common with British players, even up to the 90s there would be adverts in guitar magazines from the old Police Council advising you to do this, as well as taking photos etc…
    But Page, Beck, Keef, Kossof and others did it in the day. Ben Watt of Everything but the Girl would scratch his name into the heel on his guitars.

    The Beast in my opinion might be the most iconic Les Paul of all time. Certainly right up there with Greenie and Page's #1. Even people like Bonamassa who have played it and many more say that its a special instrument. I personally LOVE the double whites against the faded top. I hope when Bernie is selling it that he makes sure it goes to someone like Joe who will appreciate it and let it continue making music, and not some billionaire asshole who its just a prestige investment for.

    In my profile pic is me playing the Beast at Bernie’s home in 2015. The thing plays amazing and the acoustic quality is amazing loud. It has really huge frets. I won a contest in 2015 to get a recording session with Bernie. To my surprise I won out of 4000+ entries. Bonamassa’s set list was under it in the case. He played it last before I got my hands on it. Bernie was a very nice chap indeed. He personally picked my wife and I up at our hotel to go to the studio. It was so cool when he came walking in and helped us with our luggage loading into his Mercedes.😎😎😎

    Why are the strings wrapped around the tailpiece like that? What are the advantages?

    • @raytorvalds3699
      @raytorvalds3699 Год назад

      Some people find that the strings feel a bit more slinky when top wrapped.
      Plus, that way you can deck the tailpiece (without the strings touching the bridge). Some will argue that gives more sustain.
      I tried it a couple of times. I didn't feel much, if any difference.
      It does look cool though, imo.

    • @sausagepocket
      @sausagepocket Год назад +2

      Nope, I don't think so - well certainly not to the same extent in my experience, I build guitars using nitro paint (traditional paint) that tends to fade a lot faster than modern paints used by epipihone ect (polyurethane paint)

      @flamedmahoganytable9749 Год назад +1

      @raytorvalds3699 Год назад

      Nope, it won't fade. The clear coat may yellow over a tiny bit (if at all), but that's it.
      Their finish is a poly finish. It's designed to last/not fade/ not crack.

    I was lucky to book a visit to ATB earlier this week and saw most of the guitars (apart from the beast!) so the first I heard about the sale was actually seeing them up close! They looked stunning - as does the whole showroom, it's like the coolest man cave you could wish for! The 52 Les Paul looks in fantastic condition and the ES-5 looks extraordinary. Those sunburst archtops really do look as good as the photos. I didn't get any of Bernie's guitars but I did come away with a nice vintage ES-125 so I was happy enough!

    The “Beast” is a cool guitar, that Gibson has already reproduced, and may be they will again after the profile it has just garnered. Stranger things have happened. Kinda happy to hear he is hanging on to it. I seem to recall that Bernie played with “ Babe Ruth” but not on the album “First Base” their debut album. I really liked the first album but thought the subsequent albums were okay. I can’t recall ever hearing him play. Oh well. Nice collection, thanks Trogly
    Edit: just stumbled on a RUclips video of Joe Bonamassa playing the “the Beast” to demo a re-issue Marshall amp for Anderton’s about 9 years ago. The video is titled “ The Captain meets Joe Bonamassa.” Joe talks about Bernie loaning him the guitar for his tour. He made the guitar really sing in his extraordinary blues man way. The amp sounded great too.

    Do we know why Bernie is selling his collection? I know he has had health problems and I hope he is OK. I met him some years ago after I had advertised some old blues vinyl records. Somebody phoned me and asked if he could come and have a look. Sure I said, and when he turned up it was Bernie! We chatted for about four hours and of course the subject of "The Beast" came up. Bernie has already come out and said he has decided to hold on to the Beast as advised by his family. As a lot of fans have already commented it belongs in Bernie's hands and we hope to hear him make more music with it in the future. Personally they could bury it with Bernie when the day comes and I'd totally understand and respect his wishes if that were to be the case. You can't put a price tag on the joy he has given people over the years with his music. He's legendary

    Jimmy pages #1 is less faded and worn. It was basically retired in 1980. Why does the red fad and the guitar looks like a lemon color?

    1.3 million! If these rock stars think we are going to pay for their retirement after paying for their concerts and albums selling their instruments. They need a wakeup call. And true gibson is going to pay him to scan it big bucks so he keeps his guitar makes the money and gibsons murphy labs hatches duplicates. Kinda sick how this story goes.

      What exactly is sick here? He owns some valuable things and wants to sell them. Prices are determined by what buyers are willing to pay. Many guitars have sold for more than 1.3 million.

    The people who are interested in these beauties are aging out. (I’m one of those). The question is what will appeal to people listening to sampled “”music”” that doesn’t often use musicians. Supply will be there… but demand ? I think we’re at the market top.
