This was the first feature film I worked on, after college. I'm not seen in this footage, but I was sculpting and painting the alien crafts, in Burbank, CA
Everything in this movie shines with the light of genius and irresistible human determination. Everyone exceeded their own limits, technology was stretched beyond design parameters and the whole effort surpassed any conceivable performance envelope. It's a perfect melding of art and tech, the human heart and the creative mind. In my humble opinion, the best science-fiction movie ever made.
Great to see these and hear the stories. I think you're right about the mindset, as in it's a bunch of people trying to make something look as good as possible. Though physically making something is so much cooler than all of us stuck behind computers wishing we were moore than computer geeks.
Those were beautiful creatures! So glad you didn't go CG at the time. Thank you for sharing. I wish I had the guts to go into film. Damn, now I want to get The Abyss on Bluray.
Cameron probably have the same "reality distortion field" that Steve Jobs had, pushing everyone around him to go further than they knew they could. Though the British crew back in England during the Aliens shooting really hated Cameron and I think most of that was a clash of cultures.

"Next time you make half an alien, make a whole one!" Words to live by.

@WormyT So isn't it ironic that they look like CGI?
@McdonaldSpecial No, I'm implying that the end result doesn't look any different than if the creatures had been created using CGI.
