I have Autism. This movie taught me, sparked me, and was what gave me the energy to start asking questions. Although the internet was not around at this point... I did with what I had. The concepts this movie has all wrapped into it from philosophical to scientific are what to this day keep me locked away in my private lab working endlessly on my expirements. Although Im alone with no friends or family or anything but a cat... Im happy.
This film brings back such memories for me, this music made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, tears filled my eyes and I watched the sheer beauty of this film with my family, still a young boy and with no fears in the world. 30 years later........ damn 😔

One of the most underrated films of all time I think. It came out in 1989, a year that was full of submarine movies or undersea creatures. And since it wasn't Aliens or Terminator, some people didn't know James Cameron had spent so long making this quiet, dark, claustrophobic masterpiece. It was like a surprise sci-fi, but it really shouldn't be a surprise. Speaking of sci-fi, I also recommend the book version by Orson Scott Card. :)
A lot of people criticize this movie based on the poor alien creature effects towards the ending. The fact is that this is a brilliant movie expertly made by a director who was at the height of his directing powers (he only gave us two other great movies after that; T2 and True Lies). He stepped out and did something no-one had done before by shooting a huge part of it under water. To my mind it features everything a movie should have to make it a great one. It incorporates some of the best characterization I have ever seen, a likable and believable protagonist, amazing supporting actors, a near-perfect script, establishes a real bond between the audience and characters, offers unique scenes which have been copied but never equaled, and manages to squeeze in more than one act of believable self-sacrifice. Oh, and one of the most beautiful musical scores I have ever heard. So the guys from another world look a bit plastic. So what?
sonorman44 in my opinion it is one of the best pictures made by Cameron. Most people consider T2 or Aliens as his best movie - I think he's the best when it comes to the sea...his best stuffs are Abyss and even it is not an "original" idea, but a recreation of a real-life event, Titanic :)
What an amazing score to an amazing movie. "You never backed away from anything in your life! Now fight!" "You have to look with better eyes than that (Coffey's)" I mean, these characters are so wonderful, they don't even seem real. But, then again, I haven't felt more engaged by a scene in anyone else's films than I did when they were trying to revive Lindsey. That is some powerful shit.
Beautiful movie. I was watching it the other night and the bit when he gets taken down to the deep Abyss by the alien creatures has so many feels to it no matter how many times I see it.
i still remember this in the theaters in 1989 looking at the floor around me upon hearing the submarines dripping water everywhere...lol.. the surround sound was that convincing.... unbeleivable movie - the best part is that you feel bonded to the characters, submarine, and the ocean... when they come up at the end and surface, you feel like you suraface too after being underwater for weeks... a moving film
Similar experience and feelings here also watching it in cinemas back in the Fall of 1989, I was 15 and left the theatre in awe. Since then one of my all time favorite movies and looking forward to experiencing it in 4k in a few days. Greetings from Spain!
Stunning. It's beyond me how anyone could not appreciate something as moving and stimulating to the senses. 4 people obviously spent too long staring into the abyss before hitting that dislike button
A rollercoaster ride of a film. The soundtrack is gorgeous. I'm well into film scores to begin with so this was a joy to me. Went to the pictures to see it and was on the edge of my seat all the way. Was absolutely knackered at the ebd
1:10-1:40 defines something so huge and grand. Like seeing Heaven in all it's spectacular splendor as your eyes become blinded by the immensity and awesomness of such grand, garguation scale
I think this is one of the very best movies ever made. I cannot understand why it did not do well at the box office. I have the movie and have watched it so many times, I know half the dialogue by heart. When I watch the movie, I can recite half the dialogue.
Mohag Yep...i've been thinking this for ages! Why hasn't this ever been released on bluray? In my favourite 10 films of all time...Instead we have to endure 3 more Avatar films it seems....the first Avatar was okay but The Abyss is my favourite Cameron film and he should release it before we're too old!
It was initially supposed come on Blu-Ray in 2009 for it's 20th anniversary, but Cameron was so busy working on Avatar that he seemed to never notice his film's birthday. Until James Cameron's name is in the hype again, we won't be seeing a speck of hope for an upcoming blu-ray release...
HIS NAME IS James, James Cameron THE bravest pioneer,no budget too steep no sea to deep, WHO'S THAT ITS HIM James Cameron, James Cameron! the explorer of the sea! With a dieing thirst to be the first COULD IT BE? That's him! James Cameron!
To everyone who enjoyed this, you need to see the directors cut, even better !!!!!!!! A better ending ,explaining what the aliens can do and probably what we deserve!!!
paul lane I saw the director’s cut a few years ago. Man. What a difference. Absolutely, positively overwhelming. With a grand message. I recommend it highly.
Thanks for this, just recently watched this movie, absolutely love the score. This sounds like when the alien ship is ascending and sweeps up all the other ships. Awesome, and thanks again.
Hands down one of the most beautiful films ever made and one of the best films ever made.
I have Autism. This movie taught me, sparked me, and was what gave me the energy to start asking questions. Although the internet was not around at this point... I did with what I had. For real? You sound interesting
I'd be your friend. You seem cool as hell. Cheers.
One of the most beautiful soundtracks I’ve ever heard. Always get chills
This movie is one of my favourite sci-fi classics...
The soundtrack is amazing...
I agree but why can't we watch it again ... digitally 😞
This film brings back such memories for me, this music made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, tears filled my eyes and I watched the sheer beauty of this film with my family, still a young boy and with no fears in the world.

The story is good too, taking place near the end of the Cold War.
This movie is the film all underwater films are now judged by.
It gets its respect. But deserves more attention.
And a 4k.
THIS WAS A ONE WAY TRIP BUT YOU KNOW I HAD TO COME

A sensational and emotional masterpiece composition !

+sonorman44 I've always championed this movie. It's horrendously overlooked for some reason?
+therookpiece I KNOW, I can't understand why critics gave it such negative reviews. I think their tiny little minds just couldn't handle it's genius.
I think Devil Dog should chew their nuts off, personally :)
Lets play "Spot The Vegan"
What an amazing score to an amazing movie.
"You never backed away from anything in your life! Now fight!"
"You have to look with better eyes than that (Coffey's)"

did you see the alternate ending? Many don't know it even exist... totally different than the ending shown in theaters
1:46 to 2:18 Hats off to Mr. Silvestri, one of the finest composers the world has ever produced...
Jesse Alvarez he’s up there with Hans Zimmer, probably my two favourite composers... modern day Mozart and Beethoven 🧡
BramTheBlackpoolFan John Williams too.
@@cineomaniac3388 Ooh, well played!
My most favourite movie of all time. It arouses all kinds of emotions in me. This score also, very well executed. I cannot praise it enough.

Absolutely loved the movie and this soundtrack. I especially love the track where the aliens bow to Virgil for his bravery.
Without words... One of the best soundtracks I've ever listen... So beautiful
A rollercoaster ride of a film. The soundtrack is gorgeous. I'm well into film scores to begin with so this was a joy to me. Went to the pictures to see it and was on the edge of my seat all the way. Was absolutely knackered at the ebd
You never backed down from a fight in your life NOW FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHTTTTTTT 🤚
I still own the VHS copy and this movie came out before i was born i still enjoy watching it over again.
One of my all time favorite. Need BLURAY!
U know how some songs always send shivers down your spine and make your eyes tear up? This one always does it for me :p
One of the most magical, awe-inspiring, magic themes to a movie worthy of the same praise. Avatar has nothing on this!
I love the scene where Ed Harris takes the Alien by the hand and it guides him through the City/Ship.
This was a wonderful uplifting movie and this music is absolutely majestic!
This movie has no match. It influenced my life like none other. Thank you Cameron and Silvestri!
Top 50 favorite movies EVER!!!
THE ABYSS 1989 FOREVER * * * * * *
Those were the days. Good times.
4:34 Wow!!!!! That choir is absolutely breathtaking
This was best movie ever!!!!
This music is absolutely beautiful!
one of the most moving pieces Alan Silvestri created - alongside Cast Away
Of course now i'm walking to get the DVD... Probably watch it a few times in a row and more over the weekend!!!
1:10-1:40 defines something so huge and grand. Like seeing Heaven in all it's spectacular splendor as your eyes become blinded by the immensity and awesomness of such grand, garguation scale

Amazing Movie... great music... last of perfect S-F saga by Cameron - Terminator - Aliens - The Abyss - ...
I think this is one of the very best movies ever made. I cannot understand why it did not do well at the box office. I have the movie and have watched it so many times, I know half the dialogue by heart. When I watch the movie, I can recite half the dialogue.
My favorite movie for 35 years
Stunning, moving and unforgettable.
Definitely among my top 100 film scores.
...so profound was their love, no words were need to express it....
T2, The Abyss, Avatar....
Others make good movies.... Cameron sets benchmarks for good movies. Legend!
The Alan Silvestri equivalent to John Williams’ theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
"His name is James Cameron, the greatest pioneer! No budget too steep, no sea too deep. Who's that? It's him! James Cameron"
...simply one of the best film and soundtrack EVER...
WHERE THE FUCK IS THE GOD DAMN BLU RAY FOR THIS MOVIE!
Mohag Yep...i've been thinking this for ages! Why hasn't this ever been released on bluray? Once he's finished his next 15 Avatar films maybe then we'll see The Abyss on Bluray?!!
***** Most likely in 2019, once he finishes Avatar 4, he'll finally have time to work on _The Abyss: 30th anniversary Blu-ray_
hope i'm still alive then..or the world hasn't ended!
This is the beginning of our marching band show
Hey miles, I'm just listening to this again for the memories
This song was also in the beginning and part of the end of our marching last year
...there was silence between them...
Probably my best Cameron with Terminator 1&2.
What did you think of Titanic?
stralien51 I wouldnt buy a ticket

Yes indeed, Every movie James Cameron has wrrtten and directed has turned out to be a wonderful movie.
Masterpiece like the movie
This fills me with determination.
Сколько раз не переслушиваю - столько раз меня и мурашит эта тема)))
Silvestri should score Avatar 2. What a magnifiscent score! At 1:56, when Bud descends into the alien vessel, so beautiful and mesmerizing!
Theres something pure about this soundtrack that defies description. Brilliance.
my youth .... chill 100%
When I was a kid I watched this movie so much that I wore the VHS tape out.
I ever dreamed to see this movie in theaters; James, remains your best classic on the screen!
LOL This video got so much more popular after Carolina Crown 2013 xD
A wonderful soundtrack, and deep! In all senses!
SMELL SOMETHING? ...WELL DO YA RAT BOY?
This is one of my all time favorite movies, and this track is so damn beautiful and ethereal, also one of my favorites.
Alan Silvestri is one of the best composers. Love his work and this is no exception!
Watching this movie I came to realize that should we ever encounter aliens that they will treat us as benevolently as those in this great sci-fi saga.
Masterpiece Movie and score. Solid characters and acting. Great story. Amazing.
Amazing film, amazing soundtrack!! the music inmerse you in the deep sea with only close the eyes.
It was a class apart...and so much ahead of it's time in 1989❤.
HANDDS SHAKIN
To everyone who enjoyed this, you need to see the directors cut, even better !!!!!!!! A better ending ,explaining what the aliens can do and probably what we deserve!!!
paul lane I saw the director’s cut a few years ago. Man. What a difference. Absolutely, positively overwhelming. With a grand message. I recommend it highly.
This movie was very good and thanks for putting the theme up here.
Brilliant in every way.
Carolina Crown did a marvelous job with this score!
AMAZING music from Cameron's best picture EVER!!!
i watched this when i was 3 in 1989 :) and all i can say is WOW!
Thanks for this, just recently watched this movie, absolutely love the score. This sounds like when the alien ship is ascending and sweeps up all the other ships. Awesome, and thanks again.
