I too was 19 years old when I arrived in Vietnam. I ended up flying as helicopter door gunner for the 119th Assault Helicopter Company. We flew combat assaults in the enemy held areas inserting elements of the 4th Infantry. This was back in 1970. I lost some good buddies during my tour of duty. This music helps me to remember and appreciate their memory. We were young once and those of us who came back will always remember those who did not make it back alive.

_"I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy; we fought ourselves. And the enemy was in us. The war is over for me now, but it will always be there, the rest of my days as I'm sure Elias will be, fighting with Barnes for what Rhah called possession of my soul. There are times since, I've felt like the child born of those two fathers. But, be that as it may, those of us who did make it have an obligation to build again, to teach to others what we know, and to try with what's left of our lives to find a goodness and a meaning to this life"._

      Hi Chris.
I am 61 years old and I am from the Czech Republic.
I understand your feelings. I will probably never be able to understand exactly what you experienced and what you felt then, but I definitely understand what you feel today, especially when I read your honest words.
I never thought I would experience war in Europe, let alone about 700 km from our country. And it is here. What do you say. I feel it strongly, and I experience it very intensely. But in any case, I think that great evil must fight even greater evil.
      Best regards Pavel from Kladno.

If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee." When this movie came out in the theaters in the 80s my dad took me to go see Platoon a few times. I didn't know until I grew older that this movie was about the outfit he served with 25th Infantry Division Bravo Co. 3/22. Apparently the movie takes place the same time he was over there 1966 -67 . The war never leaves them, just a few years ago at a 25th Infantry Div. Vietnam Vet reunion, I saw my Dad crying for the first time in my life. Must have brought up some buried emotions.

      @EddieJohnson-sz9bi 9 месяцев назад +2

My dad too was in the 25th, Bravo Co., 69-70. We watched this movie together whenever he could muster the nerves. I never saw him cry but I could see him hurt every time we saw it. He instilled in me the same emotions whenever I see this or any other ‘Nam movie. Just looking at The Wall makes me break down for all those who served and especially those who didn’t come home. God bless and keep all you ‘Nam vets and your families.

"You" didn't do anything, as "you" aren't a Rockefeller, a Morgan, a Goldman Sachs... "you" are an expendable human weapon used by them to kill, poison and rape those of us who question American hegemony. "You" are ignorant and fanatical enough to call "we" those who never go to war and laugh at you from the 5th Avenue. From their living rooms there, they thank you for speaking in their name and doing their dirty job while you believe that you're doing justice.

Yes, we did not fight a WAR in Viet Nam. We were suckered into FIANCING the American military-industrial complex (which Eisenhower warned against) and THE BLOATING OF LBJ's pocket book. Another statesman, in his later life, Robert McNamara wrote a book; "In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam", and also cried tears over the insidious..(for no real value)....anguish and pain he...(and the good ol' boys)... put 18-20 year old soldiers through. I personally doubt the Domino Theory's validity. I know the "Gulf of Tonkin Resolution" was fakery bullshit! I know that the rules of engagement...(there).....forced soldiers to fight with peashooters and one arm tied behind their backs. Years later, we saw the same crap when Rumsfeld exclaimed, "you go to war with what you have". I also know that IF LBJ et.al.was/were so chicken shit of China and the USSR .........(therefore not bombing Hanoi)...., they had no business being there!. I could go on and on, but it boils down to only two things; power and money-greed at any price; not philosophical B.S. about not fighting the enemy.

Bought the CD around the time it came out. Listened to it a lot back then because of the film which my dad took me to see as a teenager. Got a valuable lesson. Fast forward to Veterans Day 2022, I was able to assist two Vietnam era veterans who are now ailing and elderly. They had the time of their life at The American Legion. Their mannerisms reflected those soldiers in this film. This past Veteran’s Day I will never forget. And I can credit my father for teaching me about Vietnam. I grew up on it. May his soul and all the US veterans rest in peace. Amen. 🇺🇸

His friends said of him he was the real life Captain America. The guy was back home for good. One day, while having dinner he committed suicide in front of his wife. He had 3 small children.

I was 19 years old in April 22, 1969 and flew from El Toro Naval Air Station, California on a commercial jet to Okinawa on my way to Vietnam. The USMC taught me very well how to handle stress and survival in the bush. I served With G/3/11 1st Marine Division, I Corps. I was a gunner on a 105mm Howitzer in G Battery Hill 10. We shot 24/7 and saved many Marine Grunts lives with accurate cannon fire times six guns in unison. I performed all the duties on the gun and we took turns, loading, setting fuzes, firing, and breaking out hundreds of rounds of ammo on a daily basis. My pride was knowing that every time I pulled that lanyard someone was gonna be blown away in a few short seconds and save Marines from an ambush gone bad somewhere in the bush. This music really puts chills down my spine whenever i hear it. God Bless the USMC and our United States of America. Also, God Bless the other branches of our military who served in country during my tour in the Nam. 1969-1970 DANNYGUNSIX...

I'm not sure if anyone will read this or care, but this piece, Barber's Adagio for Strings, is known as "Agnus Dei" (Lamb of God). When sung with a choir the only words are,
"Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, Dona nobis pacem."
(Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace.)
Very appropriate for a war movie, in my opinion.

I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy; we fought ourselves. And the enemy was in us. The war is over for me now, but it will always be there, the rest of my days as I'm sure Elias will be, fighting with Barnes for what Rhah called possession of my soul. There are times since, I've felt like the child born of those two fathers. But, be that as it may, those of us who did make it have an obligation to build again, to teach to others what we know, and to try with what's left of our lives to find a goodness and a meaning to this life.

You can feel incredible emotions, sadness, cruelty, suffering... when I hear this music and thinking about the story of the film, I can ,in a certain way, feel how bad and horrible was the Vietnam war and war in general... I would like to salute all the soldiers that died for there country. But unfortunately war start always for economic trouble and innocent people die. We all think to live in a wonderful world , but we hide the cruelty of our society. We are controlled by all the leader of the world with propagation hiding the bad part of the world.

When I watch this movie I was a child and couldn’t understand why people could do so much harm to each other. For the GI’s it doesn’t matter anymore if someone was innocent or not. I couldn’t really understand the horror and what was going on there. Raping children and torture people was far beyond my understanding of humanity and mankind. With this film Oliver Stone showed me something of the darker side of a human being...
    I’ll never forget that

I first watched this movie not long after it was released which was about 30 years ago. I loved it, saw it twice, it really had an affect on me and I would have to say the sound track greatly contributed to how I felt during and after the movie. Especially Adagio, it is so haunting. I have watched it again today with my husband and although I still rate it as a brilliant movie it made me feel sick, sad and horrified. It is a real story written and directed by a Vietnam Vet, won Academy for Best Picture and Best Director - Oliver Stone.
