Sainz hit with a manhole and an undeserved penalty. Fans breaking their bank accounts for tickets only to be told they can't attend FP2. Congratulations F1. This is shaping up to be one of the worst Grand Prix in history.

You'd think after having so many street races, they would have been prepared for a brand new one.
Yeah, but this one was something of a mad dash to complete. They were prepared for road course and street races.... Las Vegas, is it's own kind of challenge.
So either this succeed massively, or fails hard. Because Liberty's US expansion is riding on this, Miami has done rather well but with the recent hike in price... that might not continue. COTA is COTA, which is COTA.

Stayed up late for FP1, saw the drain cover ordeal, dozed off, woke up at 5:30 am to basketball and a phone at 3%, while learning that FP1 was canned and THEN the fan attendance ordeal. So far, even Nascar at Chicago has been handled better than this mess.
I mean, at least with Chicago you can actually say everything that went wrong (that wasn't your usual street course discourse) was entirely out of NASCAR's control.
And no televised coverage of FP2 whatsoever. Add in the bullshit penalty given to Saenz and I'm on the brink of saying "fuck you" to F1, a sport I've followed religiously since 1961. Speaking of religion, granting a race to that medieval hellhole, Saudi Arabia, was damn near the last straw for me. Vegas may yet turn into that. All this is not to mention the FIA gifting the 2021 Championship to Max.

@@richardmccaughey5928 I already past that point. I've barely watched F1 and have been following other series. NASCAR has some quirks but the racing is entertaining and unpredictable and IndyCar is downright AWESOME, FAR better than F1.
NASCAR at Chicago had an interesting race with SVG winning right at the end, wet conditions, lots of action. It wasn’t as bad. It was chaotic and disorganized but that was out of the control of NASCAR management

I can see this being a multi-part series.
The moment that one of the classic tracks (Spa, Monaco or Suzuka) disappears so this monstrosity can continue is when I will be done with a league that I should love with all of the fiber of my being. Indy car gets my attention more with each passing year.

"Sainz and Ocon assaulted by manhole" is already the highlight of the weekend!
The huge problem is that even if this weekend is the worst event F1 can put on, there will be someone there to point out that “it’s the first year” and continue to hold the race there. When F1 first came to Austin, we were given free tickets because there was not a huge demand for them until DTS happened. Now we have a large American audience yet this race had very few people in the stands. It’s going to be a revolving door of excuses while the workers of Vegas suffer the consequences of road closures and street repairs.

What you mean very few, the grandstands were packed in FP1, especially in the paddock area
It probably also didn’t help that this year was about as interesting as starring aimlessly at a wall.
If we had even a *slight* chance of a race for the championship, I reckon people would have hocked up the cash and gone regardless of the price tag. But as it stands… yeah. We all saw what happened in Miami and Austin when the crowd booed Max.
It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that Max’s dominance is undoing all the work his battle with Lewis in ‘21 did.
Everything leading up to this race was just disastrous for it in every way imaginable. In hindsight, this race has DOA written all over it.

It makes me so unbelievably happy that the Grand Prix of Stupid Decadence has become a complete farce less than 10 minutes into FP1.
Refer to comments by Toto in the 4 way interview. It ain't the end all-be all disaster that will define this weekend. It's only FP1. The Ferrari ruling sucks , though.

It that's the case then this sport either won't see the light until the end of this century or it'll become the WWE of motorsports.
People laughed at me when I said F1 was repeating the same mistakes Nascar did in the early 2000s. Rapid expansion, catering to a casual audience rather than focusing on the people who made you big, making it about "The Spectacle". Nascar imo has the most die-hard audience and it still took them 20 years to recover, even still it's nowhere near as big as it used to be. When F1 announced the Vegas race I could see the writing on the wall, but when I spoke about it it was always, "you're a hater", or "you're just a dumb American, F1 is too big to fail like Nascar did". At this point I think F1 has officially gone a bridge too far. They've already lost a lot of it's core audience and a lot of the DTS fans are moving on to different things. The FIA and Liberty either has to full commit to this casual entertainment focused embarrassment of a "racing" series or go back to being the actual pinnacle of motorsport, where it's all about the racing

I dont get the obsession with Street races, particularly night ones. From on-board and track level, all you see is the catch fence and walls. You could literally be anywhere. it's not exactly thrilling to look at, and I'd much see trees and hills like in Spa and Austria anyway
It's cheaper than a permanent track and the safety standards are different
Exactly my thoughts when I was watching FP2 today. Even with all the stuff around this circuit it was still hard to see something other than fences and walls. Some of the camera angles also followed each other way to quickly giving this disorienting effect where tf the drivers were.

I'm a pure racing fan, and seeing the fans getting kicked out is way over the top outrageous. I'm guessing many of the fans that got kicked out are litigious lawyers.

Ya I can forgive the 9" water cover welded to the frame and the frame coming out of the street (altho why not test pull on those with a 1 ton lifting magnet), but to kick fans out of FP2 due to staffing issues is outrageous and a deal breaker. They need to comp every fan that they kicked out a complete package for next year, and I still maybe wouldn't come back. They lost 2/5 of the track sessions.
There were only a few hundred fans and its not like they were trouble makers or drunks so it didn't really need an army of stewards to let them sit and watch what they paid to see
Also the bridges across the track being obscured with plastic sheeting so all those dirty poor folk who didn’t pay can’t see anything.
And yet it was actually a pretty good race, so it’s probably all forgiven.

To put it into perspective, I was able to hire a Formula Vee team and race SCCA events for 3 days + rent a hotel room for what it would cost just to *view* this Formula 1 event for the weekend in person.
That's insanity.
The cost to spectate this event is more than that of a modern GT3 car.
That's just bonkers to me.

There’s a Formula series which is $5k-10k a season, the car itself can be bought for $100k. Still less than 12% of the most expensive ticket for this race

Judging by the news after the FP1 and the current situation, I wouldn't be too surprised with another fiasco.
The nice thing is that they can't blame anyone else for the disaster surrounding the broken track and cars because Liberty Media themselves are the promoters and organisers of the race. If this had happened anywhere else, those responsible would probably have been heavily fined...

I mean, the video does cover the FP1 teething troubles, so this isn't really an irony situation - feels more like a 'Josh very wisely prepped most a Vegas history reel, in anticipation of 2023 becoming a farce he could plug a final script into the moment it started going obviously wrong' situation.
The purple pit lane entrance line nobody can see is one of those headscratchers that makes you wonder what some people were thinking.
I am convinced that, since it is a really long lap, the difference in pace among teams will be in seconds.
Especially considering most of it is pure straights 💀

I honestly pray that this race would end up like in Indy 2005 just to send F1 a message that greed in the American Market will always make them repeat the same mistakes again and again.
No the sport’s success does depend on getting a good amount of f1 fans. But this isn’t how to do it, Vegas is never a good idea. I also hate this race but I think they could have done an f1 festival in LA with a bunch of concerts, then q&a’s with drivers and then headed off to Laguna Seca.

@@samueljayachandran2849Laguna Seca isn’t and could never be Grade 1 certified for F1. Primarily, it’s too narrow in places. (And bloody dangerous in the case of the corkscrew.)
@greatsageclok-roo9013 yeah but even if they absolutely HAD to have it in Vegas they could've easily used the Nascar track that's right around the corner, it has a roadcourse/roval layout, plus it already has all the amenities. If F1 really wants to capture the American racing fan, there is no better place than a Nascar track.

Josh you should know from going to Bathurst and other races that them blocking the view from the bridges is common practice. It's an egress that must remain clear, so they need to deter people from gathering and blocking the path. I don't understand how this has become such a talking point. Literally every single race track I've been to does this.

It still blows my mind that there's a track in the middle of the country that has more history than any other track in the world, already has experience hosting F1, is comparatively cheap and accessible to most American fans, and even had its one problematic section fixed in the meanwhile - it's called Indianapolis.
Roger Penske owns Indy. IndyCar and F1 mix like oil and water.

So this video aged like milk, the race was fun, there was no rain, no red flags, no problems with grip. Yeah it sucked for Sainz but that's a rules problem, not a track problem. Every other street cirquit has had issues with manhole covers coming loose so you'd think they would know about this but yeah...
I happen to live in the largest concentration of people in the United States in one time zone. The East Coast time zone. Cities like New York, Philadelphia, Miami, Boston, and so on and so on. The race starts at 1 AM. There’s no way in hell I’m gonna stay up for it.

It's ridiculous that they're running the race when they are. 6am GMT for me on Sunday. Won't bother watching as I'll be asleep. Why they didn't run it like COTA or mexico so it's daytime for the locals and evening for Europe is beyond me

For F1, in their social media canon, FP1 did not happen and nothing bad happened on it.
Pirelli Hot Laps is happening in between sessions that might help lay down some rubber. There’s 30 cars doing 7 laps each day. However, yesterday it was cancelled for the drainage repairs.
Let's also not forget the paddock is not being called a paddock it's just being called a pit building for this race

10 minutes of fp1 running because they couldn’t sort out a drain cover. Then forcing all the grandstand fans to leave and not even have the ability to stay up to see the extended fp2 session also not giving them a refund at all is an absolute fucking joke
To be fair to Toto he was saying that manhole covers (and in many cases drain covers) at much more established tracks have come up before and people haven't kicked off nearly as much and he was backing the work of the people that have made the event happen like local crew etc. I'm somewhere in between Fred and Toto in that I support the local crew and everything that's been done to make it happen, but it's pretty bad to see the damage caused to Sainz's car and the resulting pentalty he's received for changing parts due to this damage. Also the prices are crazy for this weekend, lets hope something is done to make changes for the better next year. Let's all hope for a good qualy and race!
Sure it's happened before but think about how many sessions those tracks have had over the years and this one happened in the first 8 minutes of the first session. The last one I vividly remember was 2017 malaysia and that only happened at the end of FP2 back when those sessions were 90 minutes. The fact that these covers weren't properly checked to be sealed properly is an absolute joke and Toto is so far up Vegas' arse I'm surprised he was able to speak so clearly

No venue should get a race if if can’t run support races. Simple. Red Bull should just put Danny the RB and get Lawson back in the AT, and Max can go have a holiday somewhere…. It’s not like anyone paying to go gives a shit about the racing anyway….

I did not know that the race was held this late in the year, so when I found out, I was confused because Las Vegas evenings are warm in the summer, not the fall/winter. The temperature concerns could've been avoided if it was settled sooner in the season instead but it doesn't look like they thought about it

For those who are wondering if all street circuits cause major disruptions... the one in Singapore doesnt really affect day to day traffic till the week off the race. So what the las vegas residents had to endure was pretty shit.

I fully agree that Toto's rant was absolutely ridiculous. A manhole popping up is a serious problem, and a major oversight. It's lucky it only destroyed the car.
Toto was so out of touch with his rant, and sounds like such a shill the way he lauds this track as something which will change F1 forever and which is pushing boundaries. Like no, it isn't, street tracks have existed for over a century and Singapore pioneered the F1 night race. This track brings nothing new to the table other than extortionate prices, pissing off locals and turning drivers into circus animals. It's a step backwards.

the nutty thing is, Indycar and NASCAR have been racing on WAAAAY more temporary road tracks in the middle of US cities for decades... but F1 decided to take 0 notes from them.\
Also, most US fans have never had to fork out more than $100 for a full day of pro racing, especially for a race on public roads.

I hope the Vegas residents fight back on this event enough for it to never happen again. Whoever was behind this thought that Vegas was a good idea, all for show as opposed to actual racing. Indianapolis is just fine, and yet they only care about the show. This is pretty much a sign for them to stop caring about the show over the quality of the race.

Raced in the SKUSA supernats and we ran a few heats at night. It was bitterly cold and one heat got blasted with sleet! It was wild.
i live in vegas, so we were walking through and around casinos to just be immersed in it, cus we couldn’t afford tickets. we were excited once fp1 started, but then my day felt ruined. it was my first time seeing f1 cars in the flesh, but ultimately it one of the worst days i’ve ever experienced. i have so much hate for liberty media
It's not just Liberty. Most of F1, including the Euros like Toto want every second of this farce. They are making a shitload of money off of this shit show. As Josh pointed out, despite what he may say today, this is Ecclestone's wet dream.

I honestly thought that the Vegas track looked like a kid's rendition of a cruise ship (and its still valid). But, that spider pig reference is just gold from the 1st time I heard it.
To think you can actually watch the Grand Prix Weekend through CCTV cameras for free is the cherry on the top
This track layout remembers me of the Tokyo r246 from gran turismo with a few parts changed, idk what to expect about it
teething problems are when the camera placement isn't quite right or there are audio glitches... at a race, the track should not be part of the glitches... but that could just be me and or an unrealistic approach to the world premiere single-seater racing series.
My main thought about this race is legitimately "holy shit i hope nobody dies". That's not an aspiration I should be having.

The concept of making a video bashing a race weekend before the race has even happened is a bit silly to me.
Can we add that nearly half of the US will struggle to watch just because of how late the race is. They could've had it start at 8 pm local time and still be reasonably dark outside to have a night race, and for most of the US to be able to stay up to watch it. I don't expect the ratings to be any good from this event.
Yeah man i live in the east coast of the U.S and the race STARTS at 1:00am for us...like ughh ya know.
@@peanut_r7732 Yep, and especially with people like myself that have to get up early to work on Sunday, it's not worth trying to stay up for it. Formula One obviously didn't research times of NASCAR and other sporting organization's night events on the west coast

I remember when Baku came onto the calendar and people thought that race was a disaster and the first year was really dull. But then in 2017 it produced one of the great races. So we haven't the slightest cluse what will happen come Sunday.

As an American in the Midwest, the fact that the race is being aired at 3 am, the absolutely ridiculous cost to go to it, and all of the shit that has gone wrong so far- screw this race. I hope it fails and never happens again. What an absolute shitshow
