I finally got around to watching this, and wow! I am impressed with what you have learned through trial and error. I always wondered what those annoying noises were on other people's videos, and they were banging against the Go Pro! This definately got out to alot of people who wish to film. Overwhelmingly super positive responses! You've helped alot of people!
I'm a newbie and know nothing if this new technology, I am also 71 & a slow learner. After viewing half dozen how to videos, I give you my highest rating. Thank you.
Thanks Ron! That video is a couple years old, so I’ve changed a few things. I’m in the middle of filming an updated version, which is more in depth so in doing it in 3 parts. The first 2 are already up on the channel, part 3 should be done June 17th. Thanks so much for the feedback! I truly appreciate it. 👍🏻🎣
Wow! Thanks for the tips. I have been wanting to record my fishing trips but have hesitated because I didn’t know what equipment would work best. I will be recording my fishing after this. Thanks much! Good job. I may have more questions.

Appreciate it, better than pictures I take... when I take pictures. I want my channel to be a fishing guide reference and will be taking my slides show's down once I get real content
I just found your channel and was amazed at all the good information you provided. I got a Hero 11 for Christmas and will be trying it out with a Chesty mount on my fly fishing trip this next week. Great content and keep the videos coming!
Thank you Kirk! I appreciate the feedback. This is an old video, I have a newer 3 part series going over filming fishing in more depth. If you have any questions, make sure to ask! I’ve been filming for 10 years, even though I’ve only been serious about RUclips for the past 3. Good luck with your Hero 11, they are amazing cameras. 🎣

You’re welcome! I have plans to do an updated version of this video. Maybe ‘Filming Fishing 2, 2022’.😁 I’ve upgraded cameras, even have the Hero 10 now, haven’t had a chance to test it out yet. But for the most part, the strategy is still the same. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! 👍🏻
Great job. Now can you come to my house and explain why I don't get audio out of my DVD player? Seriously though, what kind of program do you use to edit?
I use IMovie for editing, it comes with all Apple products. Maybe in the future I’ll step up to Adobe or Final Cut, but for now, IMovie works for me, for free.
Thanks for the info man. I want to become a influencer in the bass fishing world and you definitely answered some of my tech questions. I’m really searching for what mics I could use for the chesty mount.
You’re welcome! Since my #1 species is winter steelhead, I can’t chance using an external mic on my body worn GoPro. I can tell you the newer GoPro’s have much better built in mics. That way if I take a spill in the river while wading, I don’t have to worry about ruining the camera. Once you remove the door to plug in a mic, it’s no longer waterproof. That said, I did buy a lapel mic for summer days in the boat, just a cheapie off Amazon. Of course that’s before I started using the newer cameras. I bought a hero 10 on GoPro’s Black Friday sale, I got a chance to use it on New Year’s Day. The audio is awesome. I’m going to post a video on 1-14-22 called ‘New Years Day Steelhead’ if you want to hear the audio value with the built in mic. I’m going to do an updated ’Filming Fishing’ video soon, so stand by. Thanks for reaching out and feel free to get ahold of me if you any questions. I’m on Instagram @steelheadrage and my Facebook page is Rage Fishing. Good luck, I love bass fishing too! -Barry
Makes sense, I am trying to be informational as well. When I started RUclips, I had no plans of going public. I just used the platform to share videos with friends. Once I decided to make a public channel, my focus had to change. 65% of people come to RUclips to learn something, so if you’re just posting videos of catching fish, you’re targeting 35%, and there is a lot of competition! Once I made instructional videos, my channel grew faster.
I'm trying to learn how to use my Go Pro 9 Black for hunting and fishing. I came across your videos. I appreciate your work and tips/tricks. Do you have a link to any of your go pro 9 black set-up tips?
That’s music from TecnoAxe which is royalty free music. I now use epidemic music. I recently did an updated, more in depth series this summer of filming fishing. They will probably answer more questions for you.
So you have to have the camera on all the time? I was wondering how people got hook sets. I think you answered that question when you said you have to monitor and change batteries all the time as well as the SD cards.
Yes, I’m always filming. With my Hero 10, I run 128 or 256 GB cards so I don’t have to change them during a fishing day. I do have to change batteries, but the newer GoPros (9,10,11) have a much longer battery life especially with the enduro battery. I don’t use external batteries because the GoPro isn’t waterproof when the battery door is open. I change them when they get down to 25% or so. At the end of the fishing day, you can isolate the clips you want to save and delete the rest.
Yeah. That sounds about right. Slave to the technology if you want to film fishing. We agree, if you’re fishing you’re filming. Hooksets, takedowns and bobber downs will set you apart. One piece of advice I would give you, is learn how to use the looping feature of your cameras if you haven’t already. Nice video.
Northwest Open Season Yeah, it’s all about the hook set or bobber down. As far as looping, I don’t like the idea of recording over earlier footage. I have plenty of SD cards, and end up deleting 90% of my footage at the end of the day anyway. I’m a footage hoarder I guess! 😄 Thanks for the feedback!
I really appreciate your video I am new to youtube and just started up our RUclips channel Tx Fishin Mafia all this information really helped me out thanks so much
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. I’m going to do an updated video this summer so stay tuned! I’ve added a Hero 8 and 9 to my collection and they are incredible! Huge step up. 📸👍🏻🎣
Yeah I know I couldn't afford the GoPros I went with a akaso just to start making video's and using my phone that is a samsung s9+ that takes really good videos plus using the phone to edit the videos but have a few videos on my channel if you would want to check them out
@@TxMafiaFishing-Outdoors haha! My wife puts up with it, but I’m dealing with the same. She’s not that into fishing, but went a few times this year already. She’s featured in the “South Twin Lake Trout Fishing” video. She caught a dandy on the second cast! I figure having her be a part of it helps my cause. 😉
This is by far the BEST vid. I am going Deep Sea fishing in a couple weeks out of SD for Blue Fin. Any advice? I found a almost new Hero 8 with a chesty. Should I consider a mic? Thanks again and have a wonderful week ahead.
Thank you!!! I’m going to do a follow up video in the next month or so with some updated equipment such as a hero 8 and 9. That hero 8 is a huge step up from those 5’s I was running last year, the image stabilization is incredible. Also, the built in microphone is improved. You can run a lapel mic with an 8 with the addition of the GoPro mic adaptor and even plug in a battery pack as well, so you don’t have to change batteries. The main issue with that is all the wires to manage and finding a place like a pocket to store the battery pack. Not to mention, once you run a mic, you have to expose the USB port so it’s no longer waterproof. (I think you’ll be better off without a mic.😬) On my body worn cameras, I just keep 5-6 batteries with me and change them out when they get low. Good luck! Sounds like a fun trip.
For comparison sake, I filmed this video with my hero 8 and 9. I was wearing the 8 on my head mount and the 9 clipped to my boat. Both were using built in mics. ruclips.net/video/ohweC4eVGOA/видео.html
Thank you! I recently did a more in depth and updated series, it’s on my channel if you’re interested. 🎣 Here’s the link; ruclips.net/p/PL6fk3kcGgwwjvPFp03-7kVRNlO46kB5Z0
Great info thanks. What editing software are you using? I’m uping my utube channel and currently trying to figure out how to run multiple GoPro 7’s. Might just see if the voice control will suffice, and looping. Also trying to figure out best audio options.
I use IMovie which comes with apple products. I have a 27” IMac and a smaller MacBook Air. That program is easy to learn and does everything a fishing channel needs. Audio is very important! I’ve had great video ruined due to audio issues. I’m currently using a Hero 10 as my body worn camera and my 9 with a mic adapter and a Rode VideoMicro. That improves audio on GoPros 100% for recording instructional videos. The new cameras have better built in audio, for what it’s worth, for active fishing. I suggest watching my latest video, ‘STEELHEAD: RIVER’S HIGH, FISH HIGH.’ You can listen to the audio on the talking head portions using my 9 with Rode mic. The other portion is filmed with the 10. At least it can give you an example of the difference. Here’s the link. ruclips.net/video/mOXDkYAuVzM/видео.html
You’re welcome! I’ll be doing an updated filming fishing video this summer so stay tuned. I’ve added a hero 8 and 9 to my arsenal, and they offer some cool features.
Excellent information. I am looking to have multiple cameras in my videos. I currently only use a hat camera and at times it gets a little shaky. So the tripod camera, you turn that one on and let it run the entire trip I assume? Thanks for putting this together. Fish on!
Yep, if it’s not raining, I can add a rechargeable battery pack to my tripod camera, now I’m using a hero 9, that way I don’t have to change batteries. I’m already running a rode mic with adapter. This system wouldn’t work if it’s raining. Watch my video at 6PM tomorrow night, titled, ‘Steelhead, river’s high, fish high. I got some great shots with my tripod camera. I’m running a hero 10 on my chest pack now btw. I’ll do an updated ‘filming fishing’ series soon! Thanks again for the feedback. 👍🏻
@@RAGEFISHING I will be watching for sure. I need to step up my footage I feel. Thanks for the info. I am planning on tripod footage this year on bank trips. Fish on!
@@fishingwithvance it definitely makes it more watchable. Sometimes I run only 1 when a second one is too cumbersome. For instance today I was fishing a place I had to do some bush wacking to get to and there wasn’t much bank access, mostly wading. I left the other camera in the pickup for recording talking head stuff at the beginning and end of the trip.
I have a Hero 7, I’ve been thinking about looking for a used 5 or 6. The quality and functionality of the 7 over the 3 I have is unbelievable. Wondering about your thoughts on your 5’s functionality with the app and ease of use of the settings. For storage I’ve been using a Lacie. For my working drive I’ve been using a Sandisk SSD. I’ve been happy with that set-up.
I’ve been happy with the 5’s, I have 2. However, I would recommend going with the 7. In fact, I’m looking to add a 7 because it’s compatible with my batteries and housings. The 8 needs a different battery and doesn’t need a housing, which is how I hold my mic. Currently the 7 is $229 on amazon, compared to $300 for the 8. They no longer make the 5 and I would caution you on buying a ‘renewed’ or ‘e-commerce’ version of the 5. I bought one and it only lasted a few months before it completely gave out and I had to send it back. GoPro replaced it, but it gave up at the beginning of a fishing trip and I was minus a camera for several weeks. The replacement showed up and initially didn’t work, but a manual update fixed the issue. They both work great with the GoPro app. I generally upload the SD straight to iMovie, so rarely use the app.
@@RAGEFISHING Thanks. I like the app for settings, my fingers are too big for the tiny screen. I have had good luck with the backpack strap mount. I've used it exclusively for fishing on my Alaska trip and on the John Day. I'm going to use my chesty from now on. I thought the perspective might be too low, but your footage is great.
Neistadt Family I go back and forth between chest mounts and head mounts. I like the perspective of the head mount but you have to be mindful of head movement. Which backpack strap mount do you use?
The newer GoPros, 8-11, have good audio without an external mic. You’ll want an external mic if you’re expecting to have clear audio for purposes of instructional videos or when it’s windy. I have a newer series that goes into better detail you may consider watching. ruclips.net/p/PL6fk3kcGgwwjvPFp03-7kVRNlO46kB5Z0
I save the files on steelhead and salmon, just the hookups and fights. I store them on external hard drives for use in future instructional videos. But all the rest of the footage gets deleted. I do save the actual videos on an external hard drives as well.
Ty R I fish for steelhead mostly in the winter on Oregon Coastal Rivers. The summer steelhead run hasn’t been very good in the last couple years, that’s why you’ll see a bunch of bass videos on my channel in the late spring and summer.
how do you deal with noise transfer from the chest mount into the gopro hero 5 ive been dealing with excessive noise from the chest mount like scratching sounds
@@OregonFishingAdventures I had the same issue when I was running Hero 5’s on chesty’s. It’s just picking up the sounds created by the friction between your coat and the mount. One of my old videos, ‘you win some you lose some’ had the same problem. I try to only wear a soft fleece jacket under it now. When I’m steelhead fishing, I have the GoPro on my chest pack, so it doesn’t transfer the noise. The newer cameras, the 9 and 10, seem to have better internal mics as well. One option would be to use a lav mic, but you’d have to remove the door and run a mic adaptor. It would improve audio a ton, but the problem is it’s no longer water proof. Hope this helps. 🤔
@@OregonFishingAdventures ruclips.net/video/0F1tfe8mg0s/видео.html. Here’s the video I was talking about. Don’t be too hard on yourself though, it’s RUclips, people expect some imperfection.
@@RAGEFISHING yep just like that video with the scratchy sounds same thing just drives mad when I get good footage with scratchy audio I think it's from my polyester rain jacket cuz yeah seems to be better if I wear a regular hoodie or t-shirt
Out of curiosity, why do you record at 4k? Doesn't that create extremely large video files? I don't think most viewers are watching your content on a big screen where 4k makes a noticeable difference in video quality. Thanks.
Hey Floyd! Several reasons for filming in 4K. First and foremost, uploading videos to RUclips in 1080-30 FPS will give me a lower codec, causing my videos to be pixilated. Secondly, I enjoy reliving my fishing adventures on my 65” 4K TV like I’m sitting right there. Others that watch the videos on 4K TV’s probably appreciate it too, it’s definitely noticeable. Lastly, if you need to crop videos recorded in 4K, you are still getting high definition clips as long as you don’t crop too small. Good question! My first videos were uploaded in 1080-30 and have the lower definition codec, I had to learn the hard way.
Depends on your computer, if you have an apple, use iMovie; it’s free and easy to learn. That’s what I use. I’m not familiar with other programs that don’t cost a bunch. If money isn’t an factor; Adobe or Final Cut Pro. I’ve been thinking about upgrading to one of those eventually.
Get an iPad Pro 2018 model or newer I can edit 4K video from my GoPRO 9 and my Mavic 2 pro so easy, it actually better than my 5K iMac and faster. I use Luma fusion for video editing it’s a great app try it you won’t be disappointed.
I would get as large as your camera accepts. Like my hero 5’ only accept 128GB, so that’s what I use. Recording in 4K, that’s a little over 4 hours. I use a 256 GB in my hero’s 8 and 9. It’s surprising how fast your card fills up if you’re continuously recording. They are so cheap now, it’s worth just getting ad large as possible. I use Sandisk Extreme 3/10’s. The red and gold one. That’s my suggestion anyway. Hope it helps.

Great video.
Thank you! I recently did a more in depth and updated series, it’s on my channel if you’re interested. 🎣 Here’s the link; ruclips.net/p/PL6fk3kcGgwwjvPFp03-7kVRNlO46kB5Z0
@@RAGEFISHING i will check that out. Thinking about starting my own vlogs
@@ScheidenMc definitely watch #3, the strategy video. All will be helpful, but maybe reverse order for you. 😊

Thanks man!
@@RAGEFISHING Here's the back pack strap mount in action: ruclips.net/video/dqBawb6cFTQ/видео.html
Neistadt Family I go back and forth between chest mounts and head mounts. I like the perspective of the head mount but you have to be mindful of head movement. Which backpack strap mount do you use?
Thanks!
How is the gopro audio without the case and without the external mic would it be good? Like just using it on ur chest
Once you've made your video do you save all the old/unused videos or delete them to make room for more new video?
I save the files on steelhead and salmon, just the hookups and fights. I store them on external hard drives for use in future instructional videos. But all the rest of the footage gets deleted. I do save the actual videos on an external hard drives as well.

Wear do you steelhead fish at I would love to expand the areas I fish for steelhead
Ty R I fish for steelhead mostly in the winter on Oregon Coastal Rivers. The summer steelhead run hasn’t been very good in the last couple years, that’s why you’ll see a bunch of bass videos on my channel in the late spring and summer.
how do you deal with noise transfer from the chest mount into the gopro hero 5 ive been dealing with excessive noise from the chest mount like scratching sounds
watch some of my recent videos if your not sure what i mean by the sound
Do you film using loop setting on GoPro?
No, I don’t want to chance recording over something I want to keep. If you use a big enough SD card, like a 256 GB, you should never have to.
🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🐟🐟🐟
What would be the best for editing software for a starter?
How big of an sd card should I have for 60fps 720p fishing
I would get as large as your camera accepts. Like my hero 5’ only accept 128GB, so that’s what I use. Recording in 4K, that’s a little over 4 hours. I use a 256 GB in my hero’s 8 and 9. It’s surprising how fast your card fills up if you’re continuously recording. They are so cheap now, it’s worth just getting ad large as possible. I use Sandisk Extreme 3/10’s. The red and gold one.
That’s my suggestion anyway. Hope it helps.
@@RAGEFISHING thanks

Congrats! It’s a lot of hard work, but viewership will climb exponentially if you stick to it. 👍🏻
