An Irish descendant here, my great grand father was the first generation of Irish - Mexican born on my family lineage. The Linn, McConellies, Rice, and Kellies and other families settled down on the pacific coast.

Unfortunately, no, my great grand father came through Sonora, he was the first machinist of the northern Mexican rail road line. Later on, he and my grand mother settled in Sinaloa, Mazatlán to be precise, were most of the families I mentioned settled as well. The Kelly's were tequila producers, the Rice's naval manufacturers, and the others seem to scape my mind now what they did. My great grand father father's was generation cero in Mexico, he came through the Guaymas port in Sonora.
But seems they came around the same time, because many of them are no more than 3 or four generations.

Thank you for this video. John Rilley, a hero whose name appears in gold letters in the chambers of the Mexican congress.
I taught high school in the USA. A great majority of my students were first or second generation Mexican-Americans. I taught them about "El Glorioso Batallon de San Patricio".
It was an experience for me. Years later, I had former students tell me they had visited "el museo de las intervenciones" in Coyoacan, showed me pictures they took with a John Rilley statue also in Coyoacan, some, while serving in the military in Europe, had actually been to Ireland. Happy St. Patricks Day to ALL. ERIN GO BRAGH!!!!

It is well documented that The then US Army did incurred in several atrocities, in Matamoros and in Monterrey against civils and religious groups during the war... nuns were raped and murdered when they did not represented a threat at all.
Such actions triggered the unrest and dislike among the minority of Catholics at the US troops.
The Battalion was duly formed and equipped by the Mexican Army but to the US they were taken as traitors and after the Churubusco battle, many were executed after a summary unfair trial.
There are several initiatives from Catholic groups in Mexico City that are seeking to canonize the San Patricio's Battalion members that were hung as martyrs, because the main reason why they decided to defend Mexico from what many consider an unfair and dishonorable war, was the defense of their faith.
There is also a strong legal defense stating that they did not defected from the US Army but instead they asked for their proper discharge that was not granted and that they were severely mistreated by the officers just for being catholics and foreigners. The territory were they were hired by the Mexican Army was in legal international dispute so technically they did not defected nor were traitors either.

When Texas was still a possession of Mexico, the Mexican Government recruited Irish (both from Ireland and from U.S. East Coast cities like New York or Baltimore) to settle on land grants in what is now South Texas. There was a dual reason for this recruitment, Mexicans generally did not want to settle there because of the frequent Comanche raids and Mexico wanted the Irish Catholics as a buffer against the Anglos coming into Texas from Louisiana. My Third Great Grandfather was among those recruited and he and his family settled on a Mexican Land Grant in what is now Bee County, Texas in 1829...

There has been an important Irish migration to Mexico from even before Mexican independence. More recent migrants have settled in many different states of the Republic. There are many Irish-Mexicans of note. Have you ever heard of a Mexican actor and artist called Anthony Quinn? or of architect Juan O'Gorman (Diego and Fridas houses in San Ángel)? One of the current candidates for president of Mexico is José A. Meade. Regards.

If you are into war drama's there is a movie called One Man's Hero that tells the story of El Battalion de St. Patrick. It was a US production starring Paul Newman and a famous Mexican singer/actress named Daniela Romo. Good morning wüeritos! Glad you guys enjoyed St. Patrick's day in CDMX, it looked so much fun. I'm glad you gave a brief history of the Irish holiday, not many people are aware of the connection between Mexico and Ireland during St. Patrick's day, and that is why Mexico has always felt a special bond towards the Irish. Just in case you guys are still a little more curious learning about St. Patrick's, there is a movie called One Man's Hero, starting Tom Berenger, Daniela Romo and Mark Moses. In my opinion, it was a good movie to watch. I totally recommend it. Have a wonderful Sunday.

Well the commemoration to the Batallon de San Patricio is done every month, I think every second Sunday? This is a celebration organized by the descendants of Irish immigrants in Mexico. It is estimated that Mexico has the 6th largest Irish community in the world (I believe it's #1 USA #2 Canada #3 Australia #4 UK #5 Argentina and #6 Mexico not including Ireland itself which would be #5 on this list pushing Mexico to #7) at around 1 million Mexicans with full or partial Irish background. Many Irish were brought to populate the northern states and immigration intensified during the potato famine up to the 1960's.
The parade is a celebration of the Irish legacy in Mexico but as well as a Celtic celebration as you can see other Celtic descendant groups in Mexico joining in the celebrations like the Cornish, Scottish, Breton, Galician, Asturian and Cantabrian associations in Mexico, more so than a military parade.
WOW I can't believe I didn't catch this last year, keep up the amazing work. You guys rock! Saludos desde Ensenada (In Europe at the moment and prepping for St. Paddy's but I'll be back in Baja shortly!)
