  • A customer in Charlotte Park, a West Nashville, Tennessee, neighborhood, reached out to us a few months after we fixed his gutters and installed new gutter guards, telling us that the newly installed Gutter Rx gutter guards had failed and were allowing water to overflow the gutters.
While it didn't seem plausible, we nevertheless took the claim seriously and scheduled a site visit to see what was happening.
In this case, we found that the gutter guards and gutters were working just fine, but the homeowner's front porch roof had settled. Clearly, this wasn't a new problem because he had spent considerable effort trying to DIY remedy the problem. Instead of figuring out the actual root of the problem -- the fact that the porch roof had settled -- he blamed the gutter guards.
Despite this, we told him that we'd stop by to see what was going on. What we found was evidence that he tried to solve the problem himself since our last visit. Thinking it was the gutters, he tried several remedies to solve the problem, but it persisted, so he called us to look at it.
We quickly determined that the roof had dropped over the years. The roof shingles were hanging over the rake edge more than necessary. The combination of the slope towards the side of the roof and the shingles overhanging too far made an easy pathway for the water to spill off the edge of the roof rather than go into the gutters.
We came up with a quick fix: installing a metal diverter along the rake edge on the porch roof where the water was missing the gutter.
This video shows exactly what we did to solve the problem once-and-for-all.
While this was neither a gutter nor a gutter guard issue, it gave us an opportunity to revisit the home with our installation crew and capture on camera what we did to fix it.
If you have water that flows off the edge of your shingles, it could be happening for similar reasons. Another reason why water misses the gutters is that often times when new roofs are installed, the shingles go past the gutters. In other words, the gutters are now shorter than the edge of the shingles. This allows water to drip from the edge of the shingles, completely missing the end of the gutters simply because the roofers cut the shingles too long.
If we've seen this issue once, we've seen it a millions times.
