Kasey Chambers is an Australian legend: the youngest person to be inducted into the Australian Music Hall of Fame, a dozen albums and has more than 30 ARIA Awards (the AU Grammy's). She is beloved but is ignored by radio and was shunned by Sony. She's been performing in her father's band since she was 12 years old (her dad is on the steel guitar on stage here). She had some pop hits in the 90s but her heart and soul is Country in her own style.
She wanted to commemorate the 20th anniversary of this song because she loves Eminem, and she had the time to rearrange and compose this masterpiece during lockdown. She is showing so much emotion because she has lived this to a degree as well. At the time of recording she was 46 years old and is a mother of three.
This recording is the first time it was ever performed live and was done at the end of the concert. They thought it went well, so they used the recording from the sound desk and asked their fans who were in attendance to provide any footage they had to composite this one together. While there has been no public approval from Em, she has been allowed to put this song up on Spotify without challenge.

Firstly let give props to the stones it takes to cover the biggest rap song in history from the greatest rapper in history. a song that won an Oscar and everyone alive has heard the original. Then to drop this masterpiece is something special, the creativity to take the song to a whole new level of emotion. Eminem was a millionaire telling his story after the fact more as an inspirational tale of keep dreaming and reaching for that dream. This version delivered the same story but gave the same lyrics a whole new level of the pain of that struggle, the life regrets of chasing your dream and missing out on life's other joys and commitments, then the anger at how one dream reaching crushes the dreams of people you miss out on. The steady build throughout is nothing short of perfection. I was so happy to see you finally put this on. I consider this probably the best live cover I have ever seen in my life.

@@cathywethington5913 it doesn't mean that at all. the rights to songs, especially early songs are rarely owned by the artists themselves and are instead owned by the publishing company.
In this case, 8 Mile Style, which is owned by Mark & Jeff Bass. Further to that - permission isn't required to be given. All that is needed is a compulsory mechanical license, and it's called compulsory because the owners are compelled to provide that license upon payment of a nominal fee. It's not a choice.
These are all easily verifiable facts - the apocryphal claim that eminem gave permission is not. Last I checked, there's no evidence he's even heard it.

So glad you got round to doing this one. I knew your analysis would be interesting. Another amazing Aussie artist you should check out who has a lot of texture and colour in his voice is Matt Corby. He is breathtaking to see live! And just a note on the audience, they were asked to hold the noise as they were trying to get a decent recording.

Hey Tim, I’ve been following and listening to Kasey for about 25 years and have always held the opinion that she is a great singer but I’m not an expert and have had to bite my tongue beyond a personal opinion so it’s great to hear your analysis and your acknowledgment of her ability.
Of all of the comments I have read from about fifty reviews of this performance, I have only read one that questioned the quality of Kasey’s vocals, and boy did I have to restrain myself from responding. Thanks again mate.

After about 4 times of watching this you notice how much fun the keyboard player is having.
Fun fact, that’s Kasey’s dad on the lap steel.
This was recorded in a seated theatre, no room to get up, also the audience were apparently advised the audio was being recorded. The next day Kasey sent out a message on social media for people to send her their videos from their phones.
There is no evidence that Eminem has heard this and as he no longer owns the song he can’t give her permission to put it Spotify etc.

Thank you for show casing the brilliance of our Kasey Chambers. Proud Aussie here, that has followed Kaesy from day dot. She is a Aussie Icon. When I first heard this song, I liked it, but wasn't familiar with the original...Sorry, not a rap fan, but going back and listening to the original song...Made me love this version even more...I played it on loop for weeks and weeks...and every time since, it gave me chills. She nailed the words, even better than Eminem did. IMO She dismantled the song, and made it her own, in true Kasey style❤

Kasey Chambers is an accomplished Australian country singer-songwriter, who has won multiple awards and accolades for her work; starting at the age of 10 with her family group Dead Ringer Band(father Bill, mother Diane and brother Nash), starting a solo career in 1998. Kasey has released 12 studio albums and multiple hit singles. Kasey is a huge Eminem fan. During the lockdown for Covid, Kasey reworked Eminem's rap song into her own song; such is the difference between the original and her version, that she was given permission to upload this performance to Spotify in it's own right. Kasey's father Bill help with the arrangement of this song, he is the gentleman to the left of the stage playing the slide guitar. I would recommend you react to some of Kasey's own songs, like Not Pretty Enough or Ain't No Little Girl; there are many many more incredible songs. Pure Australian talent.

This performance was done in a small local theatre, that only has fixed seating capacity for 1,450; because of the fixed seating, there is little room to get up and move around freely. This was a more intimate concert scenario.

New sub from Western Australia here.
Now you've discovered our Aussie Queen vocalist, I'd love to see you react to our King, John Farnham singing his cover of the Beatles song, "Help", live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
John ( commonly known as Farnsey to us Aussies) has had Tom Jones, Freddie Mercury, Olivia Newton John, John Lennon and Richard Marx ( who has a 3 part youtube series about John and his amazing vocals, which covers his 16 different genres), all name Farnsey as the most talented male vocalist of all time.
I've seen John 17 times live, and love him to bits. He's entertained 5 generations of my family for over 60yrs. My Nan danced with me up and down the hallway to Johns "Sadie" or "Raindrops", and now im the Nanna dancing around the kitchen with my granddaughters to 1 of Farnseys 100s of songs lol.
John is one of the kindest, humble, caring and talented men ever, and a more loved and respected person in Australia you won't find.
Loved your reaction to our Outback Nullabor Girl, Kasey. You would love her singing "Ain't no little girl", an original of hers

If you haven’t heard of her, I would definitely recommend checking out an artist called LP. She’s written for several mainstream artists but also performs her own work. Her live performance of her song “Lost On You” is stunning and would give you a ton to break down vocally. She also has an amazing cover of Beyoncé’s “Halo.”

Good reaction to a great song. Kasey's been solo since the late 90's and has just released her 13th album. Her normal wheelhouse is country/blues, but does not fear stepping out of it. As with most Australian artists, live performances will be better. BTW, it's her dad on the slide guitar.

As a fellow lover of a great creative cover I was really keen to see you react to this one. I was sure that you would at the very least appreciate it but I was quietly confident that you would love it 😊 I’m so glad that you did love it!
Personally I feel that this is The master class in how to do cover. I once heard *Marcia Hines AM, when she was one of the judges on Australian Idol say, “anyone can do a karaoke song so if you’re coming to me and you’re going to do a cover you better have made it your own and you better sing it like you wrote it” and that is exactly what Kasey did with this one!! 🎉🎉
*Marcia Hines AM, American born Aussie artist has sold 2.6 million albums, first Aus female artist to have a platinum-selling album, first female to have 7 consecutive top 20 album releases.

@@dasherl8466 personally I’d also always add in the Great Tim Minchin. People may think of him for his wonderfully written comedic, satirical and thought provoking songs (Along with Matilda ofc). But man, has he got some serious vocal chops to add to add to his insane talent on the piano! Dark Side (the Awesome version) and Heaven on Their Minds - for the Tim Rice tribute are great examples.
He was an inspired choice as Judas and gave me goosebumps live - it’s just a shame that the producers autotued the dvd & album to death as none of the cast needed it, but definitely not Tim at all.
