  • G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be cutting opal from various fields across Australia. There’s quite a few challenges to overcome, with this lot, to figure out the best cut for each stone. Let me know in the comments which Australian opal field do you like best. I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time. 🤪👍

    Hi Phil. I thought those all turned out great. Especially the Moon and cushion cuts. I think my favorite opal field is Lightning Ridge, but I am starting to appreciate the other fields more and more. Thanks alot in part to the exposure of them on your channel. Carved my first Lambina today, and had one turn out pretty good. Thanks for the channel.

    Lovely job Phil, sand spots are a bugger. I actually like that honey opal colour, not sure why but it appeals to me. Good rant at the start , I thought thumbs up helped you, but I did accidentally start a second profile so you have 2 subs from me. Hahaha take that Facebook metrics…. I didn’t know about the Chanel either explains how I got 5 subs when I’ve never posted a thing, I wonder how that could happen……. Thanks for sharing and whoever bought that parcel, bloody good buying, beautiful stuff.

    Nice Phil I totally enjoyed my lambina parcel , it's the first time back cutting since underdale uni when I finish Oct 93. I taught my kids their first rubs n dops. They were thrilled (yippie I got them off a dam computer) my parcel no23 will end up with 7 stones. Now my kids are more excited about why crazy dad bought a block at Coober pedy, and why my mate gave up helicopter s n fireworks to go lightning ridge.
    Thankyou

    That aside, I'm a new cutter and while I haven't been able to afford to cut anything spectacular, I do have quite a few shorts and other videos on my channel of what I have cut and what I get up to regarding opal.

    for a gem light i use an old cheaapo portable charger that has a singhle LED in top without the big lense and works so well as a gem torch you may even have one lying around! (not the big lense or cob light style ones, just single LED) i cant justify the money for the black opal direct ones hahaha

    I guess I have no chance of getting an andamooka matrix opal being cut and set by you, Phil. I can see that you are incredibly busy. But I followed your instructions and treated a bit of andamooka matrix opal that's about 30 odd carats and it's awesome looking, I am wishing I could get it turned into a ring and pendant or something for my old wife. BUT we are not in great shape and almost 70, so I can't wait 20 yrs till you get through that ton of matrix I just watched you treat.....any thoughts? 😊

    Thanks for another awesome video.
    Im a novice cutter and am looking at upgrading from just using a rotary tool. What was the reason you chose the Vertical lap over the normal cabbing wheels? Just trying to decide what i should get.

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  8 месяцев назад +1

      G’day mate, I learned to cut on a flat lap in the early 90’s, it’s all I’d ever known, then I discovered the other style of cabbing wheel but I just couldn’t adapt in a way that made it easier, so I stuck with the flat lap. It’s horses for courses, if you have a lapidary club nearby, it might be worth checking out their wheels to get an idea of suitability. 🤪👍
