The Opal Mills
Австралия
Добавлен 12 сен 2020
G’day everyone, welcome to The Opal Mills channel! My name’s Phil and this is where I share some of what I get up to with opal, from mining in Andamooka to buying rough parcels, treating Andamooka matrix, cutting/carving/polishing and setting in 18k gold or sterling silver, doublets and inlay, a little bit of everything. After learning to cut opal in 1992, and after a quick introduction to silversmithing, everything else I’ve either picked up along the way or self taught, I don’t want to imitate anyone, more so I’d like to do my own thing, that said inspiration comes from many places. Please bare with me while I navigate my way on RUclips, as I do all filming on my own and have a lot to learn to improve video quality.

What is the value in opal?
G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be taking a look at opal and it’s valuing. I hope I’ve made it clear that this perspective is mine, I am in no way speaking for others, and the content is purely intended for trying to be better self informed. You will ultimately arrive at your own valuing system that will gel nicely with the main consensus. For those new to opal, I hope this provides enough information for you to seek out, through the links I’ve provided below. This video in no way encompasses this topic, you will even find there is so much more to it, and even in the future, with an ever evolving system, sense of appreciation, demand and discoveries, you will f...

G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be cutting some Coober Pedy opal, sent in by a client who bought this piece from The Blacklighters. I was asked to cut the biggest oval I could, with that in mind there were some issues that needed working around, I’ve tried to explain best I can on how plan the cut. I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time. 🤪👍 Heres the link to the ceri...

G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be cutting some Andamooka crystal opal. This is no straightforward cut, as you’ll see early on, there were some issues presented that could ruin the potential of this stone. G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be cutting and treating some Andamooka matrix opal. Also I received a an awesome gift from Don of Pulitzer opal, I can’t thank him enough for his generosity. And for giggles, I heat an opal to see how long it takes to destroy itself. G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be going through the entire rough to gemstone process. Starting out with 82 cts of Andamooka opal, you’ll see how I make my decisions to slice and grind the rough into rubs, the we’ll follow one stone through the cutting/polishing as I explain how I cut opals. Andamooka rainbow matrix: what do you do with it?

G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be processing some Andamooka rainbow matrix aka concrete. Probably the cheapest form of opal, rainbow matrix is not straightforward to deal with. After slicing and a test treat, it is then cut, re-treated and finally coated in epoxy resin to bring out the colour. I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time. 🤪👍 My contact email: theopalmills...

G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’re off to Andamooka for a quick mining trip, getting opal one way or another, and back home to see what we brought back. Mining is all about the ability to keep mining, funds need to be raised to mine when there’s no opal. I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time. 🤪👍 My contact email: theopalmills@gmail.com My online store: theopalmills.com.au

G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be carving some Lambina opal. I need practice with carving in order to be more intricate with the detail, so I’ll be gradually getting more complex in the next few carving videos. But for now, I just want to get a feel for the difficulty, so I’ll be carving curves and points into the opal to get my eye in, while trying to maintain the ...

G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll becutting some Coober Pedy opal I bought from Opal Empire & Jewellery, Facebook group. That small mostly blue opal is GORGEOUS!!! I love it!!! 😍

Where have you been Phil ? I was about to call the rescue squad !
🤣👍
I'm only 1/3 through this video. Buy, I can already say, wow, what a fantastically detailed, And epic video, Phil. Bonzer, mate. Absolute legend
evaluation is useless and BS in most cases - some sellers use this tactics to get 'more' $$$ from amateurs who 'believe' in the 'value' from the cert. Generally experienced miners and cutters have best knowledge about the opal value. Most appraisers (worldwide) are not opal specialists and have no real knowledge about the opals. Best way to get good deal is to buy from reputable seller/cutter. Although opals have too many factors to 'value' it correctly - it's simply impossible !
You rock 🪨👍
Yes we all miss your vids Phil your down to earth you don’t sugar coat the opal industry you tell it how it is we all luvs ya m8 🫡🫡🫡
I’m not 6, but I could understand most of it 👍🏼 thanks for the sharing your insights.
Good you're back. I have a shellfish fossil opal I've had for a few years now, trying to figure out what to do with it. Its had small parts of it ground back to show some nice colour. Really, I'd like a ring, it does have sentimental value, but I'd appreciate some advice about it
And still a myriad of questions and answers formed on one's opinion. I still get perplexed on Base body scale. My main dilemma on the base body scale chart is pattern. Some of the patterns of LR opal do not exist on other opal fields. The Nomenclature is still considered a " Living document " I know that the document itself was considered by representitives from all opal fields. So Phil is it fair to apply LR patterns to other opal fields, knowing full well it is not an LR mined opal ?
Thank you for sharing this information with us now i have a better understanding of selling my opals
Hiya Phil, awesome video mate. I'm sure it's going to help someone out there. I hope you have a awesome blessed day. Cya! 🐱🐟 out!
Great info! Cheers Mate!
G'day Phil, so good to have you back online. 🎉 once again very informative video, where would those amongst us lost in the world of opals be without you???😊
Missed the QBOA
Phil glad to see we did not loose you it would not be the same without you . I’m happy to say I’ve learned a lot from following you for the last 3+ years. I have always loved opal and have wanted a chunk to free form but at 80+ years old I think that time has come and gone but I can still dream........Keel up the good work wish you and yours the best in 2025 and the years to come...Bill🦜
He is the best 🫡
Pretty much from what I understand Opal is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. And just act with honesty integrity when you price it.
My favorite is the seam opal gem. I need to see that ribbon pattern rough cut. You did a great job on this video. So glad to see you back.
Thorough thanks. I still don't seem to be able to source the quality Australian Opal. I see small lots. I see a lot of lower quality on Opal Auctions. I see very little quality rough for sale. The information vacuum is where to buy decent lots of quality opal for a fair price. Black Opal Direct works with awesome rough. You've got some awesome rough. It almost seems that you need to be in Australia rubbing shoulders with the miners to source the decent stuff at a fair price. Perhaps you could shed some light on this subject in a later video. Thanks
Great vid, Phil. Not that I’m bitter or anything… but :) Price of online mid-grade Australian rough has been pretty crazy over the past few months. Typically, I ‘d buy a couple/few parcels every month, but haven’t bought anything in the past 3 months. Granted, I’m (mostly) still a hobbyist, but I need to at least break even. Oddly, price of legit high-end rough hasn’t changed much, not that I can afford to buy it :). I LOVE cutting/setting/selling Australian opal, but I’ve started looking for alternatives.
This is awesome information for us novice's this video makes my day! Thanks Phil!❤
Thanks Phil. Much appreciated.
Welcome back Phil.. Great information.. Hopefully I can catch up with you soon.. Have a Prosperous Year. Cheers Famo59👍🍻⛏️
been a wile man great vid its hard to know what the stones are worth , i think to depends on the cutters name , and a not so great stone will fetch a good price where if unknown cutter would get lot less you do a great job mate
Well done, and timely for me.. trying to come up with a price for some opals i cut back in the 80's
That narrowed it down a bit.😳🤣 Harder to pick than a broken nose what opals are worth. Great video.😎
Excellent video
Wow has it been 4 years already ? I’m happy to say I’ve learned a lot from following you from the beginning 👍 you rock Phill
Thanks for the shout out cobba
A good honest video "what did you do wrong ?" Nothing in my opinion Australian opal is a world away from me as Im in France but i have noticed the Ethiopian opal available online here is low quality for high quality prices compared to the Ethiopian opal on the US market a bit confusing as we are nearer to the source than the USA is
it doesn't work this way buddy :) Most people in France are 'ebay resellers' and they don't buy tons of Welo from Ethiopia - USA it's big market and there are many vendors / cutters sellers and buyers.
@@Opal_Spectrum yes but its not just France its all the online places in Europe
@ but you been talking about the France and the distance from Ethiopia - so I explained to you how it works - most junk Welo is from ebay sellers from Thailand , India & China and cost 10usd. But in EU there are some cutters who cut and sell good Welo. hope this helps. cheers
@@Opal_Spectrum yeh hopefully ive not looked at ebay didnt bother checked out a few EU websites i found but for all i know they could just be drop shipping the same low grade
Nice to see you back in action 💙💙 I'm subbed to most the opal channels 😂 Thanks for the vid. Great job explaining it. I'm just getting out of opal trap 😂 . Finally got that 1st sale whoop whoop

Hey Phil I love the video well done. Can I please send you. gem torch so you don't have to use the flash light anymore. 😊
G’day mate, thanks I appreciate that. Yes, I could definitely do with more appropriate lighting 🤣, “torch in a jar” is a bit uncontrollable. I’ve filled out the “got a question” form on your website with my postal address, cheers. 🤪👍
@ sweet I’ll send you one
Your shaping skills are excellent!!
would you buy a rough parcel in the hopes of getting a nice piece of opal just as a specimen for a personal collection for example I like to collect rough stones for my collection and sometimes stone to tumble but of course opal not to tumble
The side of the stone is beautiful.
So, you are who I spend my nights with. Great music, education and visual stimulation... doesn't get better 😊
🤣👍
beautiful

Would love to hear about what you've learned about pricing/valuation. Been the hardest part for me honestly. Just so many factors.
Also sick stone man
You dont need 3 days in acid 6-8hrs Phil.
I wish I could afford anything like your products I've wasted all my extra money on stones that are trash due to sand
