The Opal Mills
Австралия
Добавлен 12 сен 2020
G’day everyone, welcome to The Opal Mills channel! My name’s Phil and this is where I share some of what I get up to with opal, from mining in Andamooka to buying rough parcels, treating Andamooka matrix, cutting/carving/polishing and setting in 18k gold or sterling silver, doublets and inlay, a little bit of everything. After learning to cut opal in 1992, and after a quick introduction to silversmithing, everything else I’ve either picked up along the way or self taught, I don’t want to imitate anyone, more so I’d like to do my own thing, that said inspiration comes from many places. Please bare with me while I navigate my way on RUclips, as I do all filming on my own and have a lot to learn to improve video quality.

Will the results stack up to a gemstone standard, I’ll let you decide. I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time. 🤪👍 My contact email: theopalmills@gmail.com I used a Dremel rotary tool for this video.

Opal matrix: processing a parcel to the final cut.
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.3 месяца назад
G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be processing a large opal matrix parcel from a recent video. With the test treatment done, we can see how the colour bars run and can begin slicing it into manageable slabs. Then the cleanest solid stones are marked out and sliced apart. Roughing out pre forms for cutting and polishing, with multiple treatments along the way. Then sit...
Opal mining: aka digging expensive holes.

G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well. In this video we’re heading to Andamooka for a quick scratch, as we’re still making room to mine the level, there’s still a bit of excavating to be done and a lot of dirt to move. Nothing to show in the way of colour in this video, just some of the effort put into working an opal claim. I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time. 🤪👍 My contact email: theopalm...
Opal cutting requirements. What to consider when cutting opal.
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.4 месяца назад
G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be taking a look at why opal is cut a certain way. I hope to give some insight into the requirements for cutting an opal gem that is ready to be set. For those struggling to understand the reasons of why some stones won’t sell, or why there ends up being no profit to a parcel once cut. This is not a caveat on how to cut, but a guide in...

Gorgeous cut ,you did that tricky piece proud .thanks Phil
Fabulous outcome, great insight and patience 👍
Please 🙏 don't fast forward the polishing and fast forward the talking cos you got it back the front bro😢you said as you saw but you put it in fast forwardan so no i didn't see it 😢
Hmmm, I certainly would have overpaid for the rough. I think I would have gone to $20-$30 a carat. But I haven't been buying any for a while so a bit out of touch. And I see what you mean about it being a bit tricky cutting. I thought it looked straightforward enough, but as you went through it I was thinking "Oh geez, definitely not as straightforward as I thought!". So I would have come away from it with a very nice looking stone, but thinking "Hmmm, not what I thought it was going to be". But that's the game, is it not? Still a lovely stone. 👌 Also, very nice looking slabs! Do you have some with the colour cut out? Glad to hear the cut wasn't TOO bad. Thanks for sharing the updates and we love you sharing your opal journey. We all appreciate it. And the wildlife, we love the wildlife videos too! 😁🦎🦘🦆😆
Still turned out to be a beautiful stone..👍😁 Love the matrix pieces at the beginning too ❤👍😁
I would say maybe 2-300 dollars for that piece, rough. I guess I would have overspent a lot. Oh well, live and learn.
Nice piece, hope your hand heals up well 👍 Best of luck on next vid and hope you find the big opal pocket while mining 😂👊
Haha, the "wispy sand blobs". I've got a whole jar of stuff like that labeled "carve". Beautiful color but, I seem to only get very small stones. I noticed the color bars dip, curve, and wave all through also. Some I even thought I'd try a treat on but, worried it will just highlight the wispy sand spots.
It's beautiful. That is the kind of opal I grew up knowing.
I knew something was wrong. I was gonna ask on your last video, but I thought it was too nosy.😂 Get better soon.
Hi Phil.. Glad your hand is healing well.. Great job on cleaning up that opal. I definitely have to catch up with you soon. Cheers Famo59 👍⛏️
Hej Phil just peaking in to say hello to you from me in Sweden and that opal was beautiful too👋💎👍!
still a nice stone
Hey there Sir!! Glad your not too banged up lol!! Beautiful stones! I love seeing opal in its matrix <3 Have a glorious day!!!
Hi phil 👋 good job as always m8 you can only get out of the stone what’s already in it As for how much for 10 CRTS I’m no expert guess 5$ per crt more if it’s cleaner 😀 🪨 👍
I would have thought as rough $15 a carat, do I assume filming and not releasing may mean rocks are being found. Let’s hope so.
Gday mate
G’day Kayne, how are you? 🤪👍
Wow that's some real beautiful Crystal
Can you carve a dragon
Excellent informative video. Thanks so much.
Do you have a email address or some way of contacting you please?? Im a long time fan and would really like some advice and possibly if ur keen a couple of stones i would like set..
gorgeous
My gecko barked sometimes. So cute.
great stone man great cuts
wow what a nice kinder supersize mate one in a life time rock
I don't know what noise i was expecting but it wasn't that
Your hands look much better than mine and I’m a gal. No worries about it. Fellow silversmiths shouldn’t even notice it!
Love your videos man. Is it better for a new cutter to try to sell loose stones or try to set them? Is it possable for a new cutter to have stones actually sell?
Hi I’m curious do you. Treat for other people I lived and mined Andamooka 35 years ago and have some matrix I got from stephens hill many years ago that I now want to get treated there already polished ,,carved. I’m looking to get these done If you can help please give me a shout cheers. Mark
Hell good fella , Inspires me to have a go at 67 years old !🙂👍
Thats to bad man. If I owned Gemcuts and something happened I would have talked to you about it and we could figure out something that would work for both of us, instead of just banning you a top customer.
Hey sir love your content. What grit is your burr?
I didnt know you could treat after polish.
Love the video Phil, With that being said Im still a new cutter working on practice potch with a dremel. So its very helpfull for understanding to see it writen out and explaned. Thank you so much for this. I couldnt do it on my own. Also the business verses hoby mindset, to sell opal is a different skill than cutting opal. Can you go into the buisness side of this please? The other channels do make it look way to easy. Maybe it is lol
