  • G’day everyone, I hope you’re all well! In this video we’ll be slicing up and cutting a stunning piece of opal. We carved this piece from the rough in a previous video, and now we’ll be taking a look inside the stone, this will remove any cracks/flaws leaving some of the best opal I’ve seen in person. Let me know what you think in the comments, what would you have done if you owned this piece? I hope you enjoy, thanks for your time. 🤪👍

    Nice! Your opal has stunning color.
    Dealing with cracks can cause tremendous anxiety! However, you made some lovely gems with your off cuts.
    My best cut opals are solid Andamooka, white and crystal. I have a 1+ ct white cushion cut with broad flash, brightness of 5.
    Love body tone of Andamooka “white” opal!

    i fully understand the difficulty of trying to capture the color seen in person with a camera! stones such as those might need to require payment for the cut & polish as well as payment to let them go back to the owner!
    curious, can one prevent a crack in opal from getting worse by drilling a small hole at both ends of it like one can with a crack in the windshield of a vehicle?
    also, i have to mention that i enjoy watching KU men's basketball (University of Kansas...UK is University of Kentucky, just sayin'). this year the season started with 4 definite starters while trying different players for the 5th. they've settled in by having a freshman from Melbourne be that 5th regular starter. his name is Johnny Furphy! i'm not kidding! that really is his name. true story!

    Could you shoot it with a reflex camera, or do your last frames in low light give a true representation of the colors? I want to enjoy the colors as they are. You gave such a great teaser on them with your words.

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  6 месяцев назад

      It’s really hard to describe, but even the low light didn’t do them justice. In hand, the fire/play of colour has so much more going on. Other than the digital aspect misrepresenting, I think it comes down to the camera having only one focal point, and how that only picks up a single view point, whereas our eyes gain a 3D perspective due to having two focal points. 🤪👍

      @@GOLD_FEVER yes it was a very good find, we mine in andamooka south australia, we have been very lucky in finding all types and grades of opal, to be completely honest, the initial reaction is your heart feels like it stops, and massive dread feeling rolls over you lol, then as you dig it out fear rushes in on you, then once you have it out and you see whats left of the blobs, relief floods in booting out the dread and fear replacing that with extreme high lol, you literally start laughing and crying at the same time. its heart stopping stuff finding any pocket of opal, with gold its a set value, with opal the value changes dramatically, im known as opal joe you can check us out on outback opal hunters we are called the misfits lol, because we dont drink and we dont take drugs.
