The Quiet Life of the King of the Mountain

- For the past 24 years, Leif Haugen has spent his summers living alone atop a mountain in Montana’s pristine wilderness. As a fire lookout for the U.S. Forest Service, Leif is charged with protecting the surrounding landscape, watching for signs of fire from his solitary perch. Spending up to two weeks alone at a time, he spends his days unwinding amid the peace and quiet, watching as the world passes him by.

I feel like I would love this job. But I think it's one of those things that you could easily imagine loving but in reality end up not being able to handle.
Don't kid yourself. I would jump on this job if I didn't have one. This is one of them premium jobs as long as the pay isn't in the shitstream gutter. Nowadays w/ satellite phones, portable solar-panels, and books you can preoccupy yourself with. His days probably how as slow as he wants it to be and full of relaxation. He doesn't even need a dog.
Yep,none can handle it ,unless one is not much into talking
He said it's 10 days , 4 days off only in the summer. That sounds like an amazing summer vacation every year
The pay does suck....part time no benefits.I will keep my union job as a licensed master plumbers pipefitter. The money is phenomenal plenty of work. Home every night in my bed in my home with my four legged girlfriends.
Ths must be the worst job
Being alone is great, being lonely is terrible

I'm the kind of guy that starts talking to myself when I'm home alone. I could only imagine what new levels I would reach with that kind of job.
I imagine you'd probably just end up reading and walking a lot. It's not like you're going to reach enlightenment or nirvana or some crazy thing like that.
Abel Ramirez my friend got expelled from his house because he argued with his mom and he lived in the backyard forest in a tent and he began to give his personas family's and talk with them, in one month he went to three weddings, four birthdays, and a fucking GRADUATION OF HIS FIRST CHILD LIKE WTF
Derptrollz Dude, reaching "enlightenment" isn't hard...anyone could do it. Within the course of a year, Iv'e reached the pinnacle point of my "enlightenment", I personally believe. However, attaining "nirvana" is up for questioning, as it's just the end result of something you're not feeling; so, it's a contradiction of living, I suppose. The Buddha made up something that a mortal could not achieve, and I think that's his way of saying to use his "religion" to the very end of the conscious mind.
Abel Ramirez ever see the shining?
Alexander Scales lol yup. "Mr. Grady, you were the care taker." Im not quite on that level though.
Imagine what the stars look like there
This guy has the right idea.
God said to Abraham "look toward heaven and number the stars and so shall your descendants be". Up on the top of this mountain, so far above the pollution of the city and the lights of everything less than 100 feet above the ground.........(8^)

I'd so love to do something like this. I spent two weeks in a cabin without electricity and a 3 hour walk from the next supermarket and I had the best time. So much time to read, think, walk, explore, wonder, write, daydream, sleep, chopping wood, rowing, swimming in the cold lake etc.

I worked for the USFS as a firefighter in Northern California and Oregon. I miss it every day. It's some of the hardest work around, but God those were good times. Especially working on a Hotshot crew - you end up in some really remote and pretty much untouched areas of North America. It's hard not to love your job when you're sleeping on some piece of ground that, most likely, no one has seen in a very long time. Or hiking into work, watching the sun crest the peaks of the Rockies at 10,000ft. The Pacific Northwest is definitely my favorite, though. Tough firefighting, but I got a thing for waterfalls and Doug Fir, lol. Best job in the world.
What a view he has
You could get some fantastic time-lapse up there.
Im less interested in his morning coffee and walks, more interested in how he receives his needs. Where does the food, water and electricity come from? How does the bathroom work? Is there a laundry? Does he get visitors?... People are more curious about that than his morning walks in the mountains
xxxxmimi Far as I can tell the government provides food and other essentials, he probably has a water filter, definitely has an outhouse, probably a river or stream to wash clothes, definitely no visitors.
He works 10 days so he likely brings food and stuff, washes his clothes when he’s off. People can visit if they want. Electricity is a good question. The likely answer is solar panels and a generator if there’s not enough sun.
I did three season's at the most remote lookout in the Continental US. It's called Arctic Point and is in the Frank Church Wilderness area in Idaho. Water was collected (by me ) 1/4 mile away at a spring. Best water I've ever had...yes it was tested every year. As a rule the Forest Service provides stove fuel, battery's and a small charging (solar) system for the Forest Radio. I was delivered to my lookout on horse's and mules and could pack in 1500 lbs. of food, tp, clothes, books, etc. All your food is on your own dime. Typically at the remote lookouts you'll get one resupply during the season. You call in your order and the FS deliver's it to your site. Yup...outhouse. Mine was a nice one. Arctic point was built in 1939, and was even manned during WW2. It's part of the Krassel Ranger District, out of McCall, Id.
So no food stipend, eh? I thought you would've been provided with a minimal amount of gratis food supplies. Another question. What about trash? Did you have to pack it out yourself too? Lastly. Get a lot of backpackers, through hikers, etc. show up unexpectedly?
This sounds like city slicker talk.
