I very much miss the actual paper catalogue. I would typically hold onto them for 2-3 years to use as references. It’s true that the online version can be more dynamic...but for me just can’t take the place of a hard copy.
Ikea probably designs its furniture for standard European houses... Because here in Europe the furniture fits fine!... But our houses are 1/3rd to 1/5th the size of US houses.
I very much appreciate tips on upping the look on a budget. I'm always more impressed by creative ways to make things look great on a budget than just showing off how you spend lots of money.
Being from Denmark we tend to know what designer furniture that's been copied. Growing up with the classics from Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Montana elements, Borge Mogensen etc. makes it so that no matter how much they're copied I'd still buy the originals any day. They're super classy :-)
I live in a tiny home. So I am intrigued with Ikeas ability to produce products that help me live comfortably as well as keeping the clutter at bay. 😀 It seems you are focusing on much larger homes. I choose to live in a smaller space with less stuff freeing up my time to pursue other interests. simply.
I plan to have Incredible Tiny Homes build my tiny, and I already have a lot, in one of the communities. Cannot beat first 2 years free, and then $200 a month, afterwards! Live tiny...Live free!
That was my impression, too. I could never take shelves out of the billy bookcase becasue I use them for actual books and I have a lot of them. In fact, they don't even hold all my books and I've gotten rid of a lot of them. And, my kallax cubes are perfect for my records and cd's (I'm just sorry that they stopped making the boxes for those cd's). Then again, I don't think anyone comes to my house expecting a designer home.
Best living room coffee table I’ve ever had was a solid five foot round faux leather console with inner storage. It was thinly padded to appear body friendly and inviting to sit, yet was also drink steady.
Her main issue with IKEA seems to be that everything is too small. I think this is US versus European city living - flats in Europe are usually small without great ceiling height unless they are in old buildings. This is IKEA’s market, they are size appropriate. In Europe if you want giant furniture, you go upmarket or search antique outlets and flea markets. Her solution is to buy 2 or 3 or 10 of everything, but most IKEA shoppers are very limited on budget which is why they’re shopping there in the first place. My own IKEA tip is paint. I paint many things I bring into my home so that I have the right colour values.
I definitely second the paint thing! That and the decorative plastic.... Vinyl..... Whatchamacallit. On rolls that you glue to surfaces. Like giant stickers. 👌
Yes I agree. Only 15% of Americans live in apartments, and (other than in NYC and Miami) apartments here are mostly for the young adult crowd (18-25). IKEA in the US is very popular for young adults.
You've definitely got better flea markets and thrift stores across the pond where everything is older! My place in Vancouver (currently vying for least affordable housing on the world stage) is one of the few where I can get an IKEA piece home and it looks *bigger* than it did in the store.
Yes to part 2! It would be interesting to learn just what they "copied". You could show a picture of the original, then the dupe. It would be a thoughtful lesson!
Wow, I’m already doing most of these things! My IKEA curtains and double rug are already on order! My feet are currently up on my 2 nesting coffee tables. Thank you for making me feel like a designer
I don't own one IKEA piece, but I found this information very useful. Thank you! 🙂 I'd love to hear about your other tips, as well. Too much good advice is always welcome.
Bonjour Valentina ! it is a YES for a part 2. Now let me tell you that I absolutely love all of those tips especially "take one shelf out" that is genious !!!!! Thank you V. Have a great day. - Rosalind -
Totally agree with the lighting tip. When I remodeled my kitchen and built a home theater, I added many mini spot lights that accented where a there was major appliances and I knew I was going to feature artwork. When it was all done, that was the most dramatic effect. And that wasn't expensive, but I did have to fish a lot of wiring into the ceiling. But that was my favorite thing that brought the whole space way up.
Great tips! Yes on part two. I often fill an empty, larger space, as in the bookcases, with a smallish picture, BUT! In an oversized frame. Especially nice if the frame itself is nice enough to be the art itself.

Absolutely brilliant tips, first time watching one of your videos and I have seen were I have been going wrong a lot of the time. I have just finished painting my kitchen, very pleased but adding to it is going to be very different as with the other rooms. Thank you so much, and lots more videos to watch, wonderful!
Been looking for an outdoor rug and can't find the right size. Presto, chango--buy two smaller rugs. Goes under the category of "duh, why didn't I think of that." Thanks for the suggestion!
I used ikea curtains to cover a built in bookcase in a bedroom. It’s a whole wall so the floor to ceiling curtains cover the clutter and create a design wall. I love my 4 billy bookcases. The most affordable bookcases with glass doors to protect our books. They are on two walls of our dinning room and we get lots of positive comments
I’ve been using clip curtain rings as shower curtain rings so I’m not limited to only using shower curtains. It opens up a whole new realm of design in my little bathrooms.
I’ve been shopping at IKEA (sometimes with my designer friend) for years. I like the clean, simple lines that look high end if used properly.I use the Merete curtain in floor to ceiling length. I bought a large wool rug about 20 years ago that still looks great and is larger than what they sell these days and a similar tug at design store costs almost $1000! .
These are excellent tips & I really appreciate how thoughtful & precise you are in explaining them. Especially love your use of photo examples! Thank you Valentina!
I thoroughly enjoy the video. I have been interested in interiors for decades, most people are on budgets so when designers take the effort to pass on tops and tricks it is always worth a watch. Thank you for the EXTREMELY INSIGHTFUL, INNOVATIVE AND USEFUL tips! I watch tons of decorating videos and you somehow manage to keep fresh and inspiring! Loved the tips, will definitely incorporate at least 3 of them in my home, and those are not just useful for ikea furniture but for overall home decoration!
I love your channel! I have been renovating a 1900 Folk Victorian Farmhouse in Sparta GA for past 3 years, just finishing up on ground level, but lots more to go. I'm learning a lot from you, so thank you very much! If you would do a segment on Folk Victorian that would be awesome as there isn't much decorating advice for these old farmhouses. 💞
Absolutely, IKEA has drawn ‘inspiration’ that is a little too close to iconic pieces. Let’s take the more recent, Virgil Abloh’s MARKERAD collaboration with IKEA vs Paul McCobb’s Planner Group chair.. Or the “Meltorp’ dining chair vs Norman Foster’s 20-06 stacking chair.. Or the iconic ‘Poang’ chair vs Alvar Aalto’s 406 lounge chair. Pick your battles, I suppose. Excellent suggestion to color block shelving against the same colored wall, and removing a shelf. Certainly gives more of a gallery vibe to your treasures, whereas the uniform shelves can resemble the rows of knickknacks at a resale shop. Slay on, momma!
I would love a part two. Thank you for all of these tips. Some I knew and some I did not. There was an image in the video that I also found so inspiring. It was of a pink couch. I love decorating my home in greens and blues and neutrals. But adding one or three pieces in a new, pretty color could really be fun and make it feel completely different. Upsizing accessories is a great tip for me! One of my fondest memories from childhood are my mom's ceramic figures and other beautiful objects dispayed in shelves. I find I am a magpie myself, and too many small objects creates a cluttered feel that's been bugging me. Sometimes you feel what's off, but can't see it -- now I see it!
One more thing….The cube shelves do scream “Ikea” but if you incorporate other pieces that are u inquest, who cares? I also love the cubes in a child’s room or play area
I'd love a part 2 and found your tips very helpful. I'd never thought about the advantage of scaling up. Thank you for pointing that out. It really helped me to understand why somehow my living room design does not make me happy. Tweaking the scale of things might just be the answer!
One way high design can be easily realized is by having just a few big, oversized (and VERY nice) pieces per room, and with virtually nothing else. Clutter free makes spacious makes each carefully selected piece seem more important as a signature statement - stately, rich, spartan.
not filling every inch is so important. I'm a graphic designer and when I work with certain restaurants they want to fill their menus or advertisements with so much info and they always want to overcrowd the design. I keep reminding them that you need negative (empty) space so your eyes know where to focus and then flow through the artwork otherwise it's just a hodgepodge mess that you ignore and won't be effective. Homes are the same way, too much stuff looks like clutter and doesn't look good.
Good point and makes me wonder - why oh why are menus the ULTIMATE offender? The restaurant may not be overly dressed, the front sign may be very tasteful . . .and then they fling that two foot high twelve pages of dense writing in front of you and it all turns out to be eggs, chicken or hamburgers, haha. Stay in your business. It needs you.

I have an Ikea TV stand, with two shelving units on each side from the same line (Hemnes). I changed out the knobs for something more high end, and it looks great! Everyone compliments my “entertainment center” that I created for less than $500 for a 65” TV.

Me to, I think a lot clearer when I have a physical copy of things
Yep. Something about the linear presentation makes them easier to absorb than a website.
You can pick up a catalog at the store.
I so agree, miss the paper catalog and our IKEA is 3 hours away.
Me too!! I have old catalogs and they are so helpful in thinking about new ideas or I love it to design my closets.

Yes, I think most people in Europe don't live in villas 😅 So the furniture size is approximately the right fit
Ive never been to the US. But. The size of American homes seem ridiculous.

Part Two for those of us with curiosity and need a boost of creativity, .
Love the tip about putting same color piece on the same color wall. Great trick of the eye!
Hi Valentina, yes please make a part 2. Thank you
I have an Ikea TV stand, with two shelving units on each side from the same line (Hemnes). I changed out the knobs for something more high end, and it looks great! Everyone compliments my “entertainment center” that I created for less than $500 for a 65” TV.
Love the tips accompanied by photos. Part 2 please!
Thanks for ‘same color piece and wall’ idea!
I understand the designers being upset but if IKEA can make it more affordable for buyers then as a consumer, I’m grateful! Great suggestions!
Thank you so much for the ideas, some I knew and others were genius! Had to pause your video to relook at my space and could already imagine new ideas 💡 YES, please !!!! Would love to see a part 2 and agains THANKS 🤩 I’m excited to get started.
Yes please part 2 !
Already got so many ideas written down!
I am currently watching your video from the inner garden of the Kimpton Brice in Savannah. Was inspired by your family's recent getaway. This video has excellent advice on how to elevate the look of any room. Thanks!
That is awesome!
Learned so much from this even though we don’t live near an IKEA and they don’t deliver to our area. 😘
Why won’t they deliver? My daughter has that problem with them too.
@@paulalim1476 usually it’s because it’s a remote area, that’s my problem (and I’m 9 hours’ drive from the closest IKEA store 😭).
@@beautifulday720 My daughter is in Santa Cruz and about 45 minutes from IKEA store. I suppose that could be considered remote.
Yes, ladies, but you CAN use these same ideas with furniture from other stores, too, not just Ikea?.... Right? Just shop around to get the best deals and the right items, use her ideas there, too !!??
Yes! Part 2 please👍! I’m fixing my billy bookcase as we speak😊!
I absolutely loved this episode and ive been watching a long time ☺️
