    You did an excellent job. No fluff, just straight to the point with the video.
    The look/design of the cabinets are pretty amazing: great paint color and use of CB2 hardware. You thought outside the box- never would have thought of flipping the cabinets... I'll be d@mned, it worked! 🙂
    And thank you for using a remnant piece. Finally, someone else who sees the magic. I tell my husband it elevates any cabinetry, but all he thinks of are the costs- can't see the vision. Again, great job with everything.

May I suggest Ikea utrusta push openers for the higher cabinets? they work great and you wouldn't have to reach for the door knobs anymore (obviously keep the knobs for aesthetic reasons)..

    Consider using polyurethane as a top coat for your painted furniture. Two coats preferably, satin finish, and it will act as a sealer for the paint. Seeing chipped paint drives me nuts!

    • @klbs9630
      @klbs9630 2 года назад +12

      I was just going to suggest this! Minwax polyacrylic clear coat gloss/satin is amazing. Also paint quality and type drastically changes paint chipping too

    • @klbs9630
      @klbs9630 2 года назад +10

      @CCRider the specific brand and type (polyacrylic its water based) I mentioned does not yellow. It’s well known for being one of the best at not yellowing. Yellowing in general can happen for a multitude of reasons its more common in areas with extreme amounts of sunlight exposure combined with improper primers/paints/stains/topcoats and usually only on very light colored paints. Getting the proper types of materials can ensure no yellowing. I have never had yellowing on any of my surfaces using that and I’ve used it on painted wall tiles, trim, furniture and more. Proper prep and knowledge about each product you are using in a paint/staining project, as well as the type of surface you’re finishing and the location of it is important before starting.

    • @alexisfelice
      @alexisfelice 2 года назад +1

      @@klbs9630 Thank you for saying this! The one I chose did yellow if we weren't careful. Next time I do another paint project I will totally go for the one you mentioned

    • @klbs9630
      @klbs9630 2 года назад +4

      @Surfer all of these are going to be toxic, it’s a chemically made enamel/lacquer type product/sealant/finish. Most things in construction are toxic to some extent. MDF is fine on it’s own it’s just when it’s being cut/sanded that you need to be wearing the proper PPE as to not ingest the particles as that’s when it becomes toxic

    • @misstweetypie1
      @misstweetypie1 2 года назад +1

      @Surfer as klbs mentioned, pretty much everything in construction is toxic, to some extent. However, water based products are a lot less toxic than older products (they also don’t work as well, as all the old timers will lament 🤣). Probably not a good idea to make food on something treated with poly, but after application, it’s pretty safe. Putting it on, and the few days after while it is curing are going to be the worst days, so if you can, leave it outside or in a non-living space if you can. There’s a lot of things that aren’t good for you while there are particulates of it in the air (mdf, arborite, plywood, etc.) but they are inert once you finish cutting it and breathing it into your lungs ;) ditto with treatments. If you can breathe it in or it’s wet on your skin, those are when any product is the most toxic (but water based stuff is least toxic, so minwax is pretty safe)

    5:53 TOTALLY AGREE 😊 my wife and I had inexpensive cabinets installed in our house last summer 2023 and the doors are thin cheap IKEA quality. Our cabinet maker builds his boxes and drawers all in house out of good quality birch plywood and his frames are solid wood but he orders the doors from a supplier. I learned that this is a common practice in the “affordable” cabinet industry unless you have deep pockets.
    Our kitchen looks fantastic but I see myself having better quality doors made in the future as they wear down and or break.

    • @champagnechaos
      @champagnechaos  Месяц назад +1

      Yes! It really is so interesting to learn more about the whole process, and the price point of cabinets can vary by a TON... As long as the boxes are solid, the doors should be easy to update down the road!

    I think this is gorgeous! I think all homeowners have to make decisions like this. Eventually you want to do solid wood but you didn’t settle for what you’re doing in the interim. It’s your home and you shouldn’t have to have a million dollars to make it feel like one.

    Awesome job, and they look great!! Thank you for posting your hard work - much appreciated! I was going to do the same because the height of the Havstas is 52", thus giving 104" stacked!! I ordered them online and went to pick them up, but I had to cancel after seeing the floor model. The cabinet was a bit too shallow and the quality was an issue for me -> the wood seemed to have a fake wood grain that I did not want and the floor model was damaged. Rather than using these cabinets, I've decided to build my own from cabinets from stock boards at my local hardware store, but I'll record it so others can see the tradeoffs. I'm bummed because you did such a good job documenting and showing us the way! Regardless, I'll use some of your touches when building my own. Many thanks!!

    You have great taste, and I think u made a wonderful choice on countertop. After all? Isnt splurging on pieces like that exactly one of the benefits of finding affordable ways to do projects like this?

    Great project, nicely executed with good attention to detail and bang on trend colour selections.
    All that said, with careful choice of units, I could have supplied a very similar configuration using high quality German or British carcasses and painted, solid ash doors for very little more than your costs - with far less labour requirement, a 10 year minimum guarantee and the paint having been professionally spayed & UV hardened in a state of the art paint line.
    Great as this example of an “IKEA Hack” is (and it is genuinely a great one), it is not always the most cost effective way, and can be fraught with compromises.

      Hi! I'm so glad you liked the project!
      I'd definitely like to use higher quality materials in this project, but where I live, using something other than IKEA for the base cabinets would have cost exponentially more. Although it could definitely be done in more efficient ways if I hired it out, that's not part of the budget or plan right now. I'm enjoying this process and all I'm learning through it! ❤

    Yes, I did paint on a shinny/glazed Wooden furniture by rubbing it with a sand paper. Then do a primer and final pink color. 👍✌️

I have an old kitchen and there's a huge sort of tube into a column covered by wood...which makes it difficult for me to do something similar , i am wondering how to overcome this ... and I am sacred to do this..you seem fairly used to DIY , so well made !

    I have never been more frustrated in my life trying to paint an Ike’s furniture piece. I tried tooling paint spray paint I prime the whole thing. I had to be satisfied with finish I really wanted high gloss. Omg don’t know if I won do that again I take off my hat to you. Great info

      I had a hard time with one of the pieces too! These cabinets weren’t that shiny, typical ikea material, which helped a ton… some of their pieces are harder to paint than others for sure!

    That turned out absolutely stunning! I just purchased a much larger home with 12' ceilings and have been looking for that perfect idea for some space in the dining room. This is it. Also, and I just discovered this, Zinsser sells a primer with a 'turbo' spray which comes out in 10" fan which would make priming that much faster. I plan on going that route but love the Magnolia Coffee Nook color. Will be using that! Great video.
