I don't know if this will help but a little advice from a Mother in her later years. In decades to come when your children are making families of their own, it won't be the projects that will come or where you have been but it will be the precious moments spent with your children while they are learning and growing. Dont be too hard on yourselves when you think you've got the balancing act out of sync, you are only Human after all.🥰

I agree. It's a struggle but your times with your kids is key. The projects don't have to be done quickly, though there is always the desire to do more and faster. Also while filming slows things down, the memories on camera will also be special for you and your children when they are grown. However two videos a week are a LOT!

As a single mother of 4 it was a struggle each and every day to stay present. Some days it was all I could do was to just do what was in front of me. Brene Brown says she and her husband check in on each others energy levels, I.e., she was operating on 20% and Steve says okay I’ll pick up the 80. Or vice versa. When their energy levels didn’t come up to 100% they agreed to sit down and discuss how they could move forward.
Sounds like a great way to not get resentments and to create great communication skills. Have a great week and give yourselves permission to just film once a week. Takes the pressure off. Love and hugs from your friend Denie

Don't stress yourselves out too much. I had my second baby when the first was 16 months old. The 3rd two years later. It was HARD and you get NOTHING productive done. They get into everything, need a lot of attention, supervision, you don't sleep enough, don't have down time, walk on egg shells all the time, the lot of it. Mine are a bit older now, so let me say this: there is no shame in finding a daycare or nanny to help Crusoe learn Portuguese and give you guys a break for a few hours. I didn't have the money or the community for it and the reality is that ot burns you out eventually. You've had the youtube channel forever, the filming isn't the issue. So give yourself grace and allow help. It will benefit the boys learning the language early and it will be better for your mental health and your relationship. Warmly, 7-years-into-the-future-you ❤

John, you are a trooper. As ANY parent knows it's hard to even make dinner with kiddos running around, let alone BUILD an outdoor kitchen! Your border is looking great. I love that you've mixed up the colors and it looks like you've got some foundational plants there that are doing really well. My suggestion for filming is to get some static GoPro's on tripods, let them film and time lapse footage. We don't need to see everything, and Lord knows the conversations people have while trying to do BIG builds are short and sweet with a series of grunts and head nods! Tara, when I was in landscape school, I had a small company, and I had 2 different professors (1 man and 1 woman) BEG me not to get into the maintenance side of the business. Their argument was the everyday grind would wear me down and I should stick to the design portion of the business. Well, me being the FEMINIST that I am, didn't listen, and 5 years and 110 customers later, I was totally burned out and out of the business. The fact is, your body has just done something John's can't. You've had a baby, please give yourself some grace. Now, as hard as this is to admit, John's body can do some things that OURS can't. I say that with a grimace, and it has taken me my 53 years to learn that FACT to be true. He can carry the big stuff and build, and you can make the big design decisions and be the supportive, loving wife you are, again, think about purchasing some GoPro's, stick them in various spots around the property and just get on with you day. You guys make beautiful, family friendly content, but we (your iphone) don't need to be in your faces 24/7! We love you Guys!

Beautifully said. So supportive.. . . Courtney. Mr and Mrs Newby you guys are amazing!!! Your boys are having the most amazing life and they think it is just normal. I wish every child could live the same way. Barefoot, running in nature,
watching in awe as the bugs and bees assist with your garden. Gosh Caruso's understanding and vocabulary is mind blowing. John's patience with Caruso while trying to cement in the posts deserved an A+++. Even if internally it was frustrating and was stop, start to your thoughts, your little man really was included and he really thought he was helping. How different the world would be if all children could grow up in a similar environment. Be gentle with your selves. We love and feel truly spoilt that we get to share your journey. Much love and big hugs from South Australia.

Hang in there guys. It can be overwhelming to raise a young family, build a dream property, do 2 RUclipss video contents per week and adjusting to a new country, learning a language and trying to fit in without family and long time friends around… we’ve done it in Chile (minus the RUclips) and it can be overwhelming sometimes. Thanks for being open with us. Don’t forget to take a day off a week and if I may suggest, schedule it on your calendar… a day off the farm or just sitting reading a book with the children playing and trying to not stress and enjoy being together. On another note, I could hear Crusoe starting to talk with a British accent when he says mummy, daddy… it’s so cute ❤ love you guys.

When the outdoor kitchen is done it is going to look wonderful sitting within the natural elements. I am praying that your untreated new wood doesn't turn into hockey sticks given the planning and all the work John will be doing along with his pint-sized construction assistant. I can understand how difficult it must be to build and film the build all with your busy little boy at your elbow but I hope you will take into account that you are able to have time with him that you wouldn't if you were parents going off to a 9 to 5 job and he will remember these wonderful times as he gets older. Dearest Newbys
I really feel I wanna share something quite personal with you, probably rather unusual to read on public plattforms, but I am a highly sensitive and very emotional being and simply want to express my gratitude and love for your videos, your work, your shared passion, your parenthood, your visions, your explorations, your honest filming and how you show yourselves with all your joy, excitement as well as struggle and worries!
I always appreciate raw true expression and I felt so relieved when you John, and later on Tara, shared how it can be challenging to do everything you do plus filming plus having an enthusiastic toddler next to you who seems to really want your attention besides all that work. As a kindergarten teacher I know very well how important it is to actually give attention to children, and they can feel when it's real or when it's just inbetween something and would ask for more and more and more. This episode when I heard Crusoe say multiply times "quick quick, run run" like I usually have heared you saying to him, I felt a little sad. And noticed some kind of tension rising inside my body, like a stressful vibe.
Normally when watching your chosen life; deeply connected to nature, with some healthy distance from the noisy, hectic, overloaded and ever lasting demanding world while being so patient, playful and caring with your children, animals and treeroots (🥲); always makes me feel so so touched, encouraged, joyful, motivated and inspired! But today it struck me, how come everything has to be quick quick suddenly, why should Crusoe be quick quick, now he's even turned it around for you and asks you to be quick quick?
Seeing you Tara feeling frustrated with your energy level and physicalness, resonates a lot with me wishing for more strength very often as well. At the moment I am getting educated at Red School www.redschool.net/ which support women in how to step into the power of their menstrual cycle / or moon cycle when pregnant/breastfeeding/menopause and use its deep wisom and different qualities in different times of the cycle to feel empowered and live life accordingly to mood, energy level, hormone change, etc. What I have learnt so far is that many women are actually burnt out because of living and competing with a mostly male demanding world and because of not taking care well and valuing their natural rythm of their cycle, e.g. rest and surrender during the menstrual bleed in order to recharge. I am exploring this for myself right now and really feel how I wanna produce and keep on going constantly but when listening deeper I sense some tiredness, and sometimes it can really help to actually rest instead of pushing myself, because after this deep rest there will be a natural momentum coming again which is more powerful than any forced push.
I mention all of this above not to critisice you and really do hope I found the right words (english is not my native language) but because I felt an urge to share, and maybe something of my writing would inspire you or even help? At last I wanna tell you how much I enjoy your shared experiences and yes, I am really fascinated by your drive to start projects and your enthusiastic beginners-mind plus 'we can do everything' - this feels so uplifting! At the same time I would totally understand now, that you have shared something feels not quite free flowing anymore too, if you stepped back, stepped out of constant producing, instead stepped into a break, into rest or whatever you need and maybe explore and live more that slow slow slow after all your amazing, impressive and big work. I felt kind of relieved and had some tears when you shared from your heart so openly that it's difficult, and then I knew why I had felt that tension inside of me before. Thank you for showing yourselves so pure!!! I see you! I hear you! John and Tara, your wish and vision to get going with projects faster in order to harvest the bliss sooner, your excitement and tiredness at the same time and also I see you dear Crusoe wanting to play and be seen!
Please let me know if anything is not clear or if you have questions about my feelings and personal observations.
I am sending all my love, understanding and gratitude to you to Portugal and your beautiful farm life and curious to see how everything will unfold. 🧡💛💚💙💜❤

I loved that all your wood came from one tree - and that there will be no waste. It seems such a better attitude to trees.
I really hope you can reach a workable system that includes enjoying the journey. It's the most important bit of getting from A to B, not the destination.
Remembering what you said about never getting to sit out on the lawn, how about some videos where you do just that and talk about what you've been doing, maybe have a wander and a tour of what's been done, meanwhile just get on without the pressure of having to film absolutely everything (If you're anything like me, you'll end up with a 5 hour video that you have to spend another hour or so cutting down).
I've enjoyed those times when you share your sense of joy, I've enjoyed seeing you all enjoy each other. I'd still enjoy watching that sort of thing even if your weren't following yourself around with a camera all the time.
I look forward to Sunday and hope that the feedback you get today can help you find a way forward that works best for you.

Concrete blocks tree roots from oxygen and water. As time goes on, tree roots need fresh air, so they’ll again grow above ground. This time, they’ll crack the concrete, making a big mess..
Alternatively, covering the tree roots with plastic will deprive the roots of air and moisture which could fatally damage the tree.

Tara, thank you for being so honest with us. As so many others have said do NOT be so hard on yourselves, the amount of work that you have done around your farm is extraordinary and a great credit to you both. As well as all that work you have carried Sawyer for 9 months inside you now you are carrying him on your hip, as well as keeping a home running, looking after all 4 of you PLUS your " happy place" . I am a little tired just writing it all down. Please, please just take one day at a time and if a " project" takes 3, 4 or even 5 videos, who cares? I am very sure that ALL your followers are just happy to see what has been done between each video, I know I am. If I lived next door( or something) I
would love to help you, but Australia is a bit far away, but please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers regularly. 🙏🙏❤❤

OMG, "Chop chop, Mummy!" 🥰 Too cute! 😍
Tara, the amount of moving about that you must have to do with all the running around after Crusoe and Sawyer, and the chickens; tending to the vegetable garden and all the other things that "not farm" life brings, please don't beat yourself up just because the wood - which as you rightly pointed out was wet and so much heavier than it really should be - was too heavy to carry!
I believe you are doing far better than you think * hugs *
Also, I know you said don't worry about whatever your going to say more of in the next video, but you guys are just too lovely not to worry about! That cliffhanger has made Sunday seem such a long way off, but I shall be keeping you all in my thoughts until then 🤗💚

I think sometimes the relentlessness of having two small kids and a busy job is just overwhelming. I found it very hard as there was literally no time for myself - ever. I also think you guys are probably missing travelling and the freedom that goes with it. Life really does change when you have a family and settle down. It’s a time of huge transition and readjustment which can be really hard.
I think working out what brings you joy and trying to make sure you incorporate that into your daily or weekly lives and also stepping back from work a bit would be a good idea. It doesn’t have to be forever. Maybe one film a week rather than two? Also I think every one here is just happy with pottering around the garden with you guys so you really don’t need to always have a project to keep us entertained. Maybe you could do more day trips to scratch the travel itch/ have some fun? Anyway best wishes to you all and I hope you can find your joy again soon! Hello family! I totally understand what you are conveying. There are so many high expectations and RUclips is not quite kind at times. All, I can encourage you guys with is that the farm is a long journey. Pace yourself. Videos don’t have to show always a complete project. This is a real family sharing on real time a journey. I love having to come back for more… like the Tiny house. The suspense of weeks and months and the ultimate reveal of a job well done. It gives me personally the courage to start an unknown project, to explore and learn what I am capable of, and to think big of horizons I never thought I could reach. I absolutely love your content and will be here to cheer you all the way, no matter what. Love you guys- Mariana from Jersey ❤❤❤❤

Agreed. Feel free to just prop the camera and time lapse if your feeling up to it. If not just show off your finished work.
I’m not that tech savvy myself but during COVID I had to teach sewing online. I’m a more a visual and hands on person it was extremely difficult to handle all the tech and do my lessons. I saw some of my colleagues were so natural behind the camera and just popped out videos like nothing, while for me it was a laborious all day struggle to make a 30 minutes tutorial. 😅 So I get it! It’s hard to work, play and live and try and capture it all on camera. Then go through all the footage and slice it into a beautiful 30 minute video! Take a load off and relax. We’ll still be here! ❤

Great episode. It’s clear you’re mindfully looking at the process, the future of your channel and your level of happiness. To those points the process should evolve and switch up. It’s hard enough scripting a project but it must be 5 times more complicated scripting a project that includes your children. I enjoy the projects and enjoy a simple check in on the kids. For me the right split is 85% project (gathering materials, building, remodeling, gardening, and transforming the land) and 15% everything else. As to your channel, it should reflect what you think you can uniquely share. I think it’s being optimistic, creative and unexpected). More than anything else, focus on what makes you happy. Take us to the lumber yard or the local market looking for furniture. All of that is part of creating the home your building. Finally take a week or two off each quarter just to be with each other, with family and with friends. Tell your viewers you’re off for a couple of weeks. We don’t need to know why, where or with who. Just kick back. Trust me we all do that and you should too. You’re a great couple. Whatever channel you move forward with should first and foremost make you happy and accomplished. Go with your heart and we will follow.

Crusoe helping took me back quite a few years. My dad was always creating something, never sat still and I used to love watching and trying to help
. It used to drive him mad and I'm afraid he didn't have your patience. He'd tell me to go and play with my dolls...Which I totally ignored :) He gave up in the end and started explaining what he was doing although I wasn't allowed to touch I could only watch. When I'd grown up and married I undertook many DIY projects including making our bed and built in closet, building a stone fireplace and even mixing my own sand and cement. I'm too old now but still miss the joy of doing it myself.

I love the animation and map of the farm.
It help to understand it more.
Regarding filming, building and Crusoe i can understand it is difficult.
I see others just put camera on stand
But of course there are those close up shorts .
Others with Big projects end up having cameraman.
At the end I believe it will work out for the best
    Best wishes with new project

Love the honesty about how you are both feeling, but with my own 2 kids only 6 months ahead of your 2, it honestly seems like you are both doing an amazing job. Doing any of these jobs with a toddler around wanting attention and engagement is so difficult but Crusoe will be able to look back in later years and understand why he grows up to be so successfull. Because of moments like these, gathering stones to put in the concrete mix will likely be a memory to stay for ever, and be reminded of everytime he steps onto that kitchen deck. Im sure there are many unseen cross words and latent frustration, they'd be present with these projects regardless of the extra pressures of parenting, filming and monologing to camera. They will also be forgotten so quickly, the love you show the kids on camera will easily outdo the other moments and the real memories are made from the simplest things done together.

I just enjoy watching your channel & seeing the children grow as well as you & John efforts to make your farm so productive & just gorgeous! Much respect to you both! It’s a lot of hard work keeping up with everything that’s going on, just remember you have to take time for yourselves and the family. Do one project at a time! 🥰🙏🏻🐓👶👶

Watching Crusoe help John is priceless! However, the challenge of building and filming while in the company of a “helpful” two year old is not lost on any of us who have been the parents of toddlers.🤪 Hang in there you two, parenting is not for the faint of heart and you two are doing an awesome job.💗
