On “My Car Story” we're in Rosemont IL at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals on 11-17-23.
We’re looking at a 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Shenk in Silver Paint. The car comes with a 305 CI V8 engine with a 5 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Phillip Madden. Phillip’s had this car since 2021. Phillip shares Charlie Graf was Co-Owner of Shenk Chevrolet Dealership in Hasbrouck Heights NJ and worked a program with GM that Monte Carlo SS Cars with and automatic transmission could be converted by special order (by Charlie) to become Hurst 5 Speed manual transmissions. This is one of those cars.

Great ride once we added the bull 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I have always loved those Monte Carlo SS from the 80's.
I learned something new today on the 5-speed conversion! Thanks Lou!
Hi Robs Big Tent Revival, Happy to read "I have always loved those Monte Carlo SS from the 80's." :-) You're welcome, Lou
My favorite Monte and the ultra rare 5 speed makes it even better! What a joy it is to see one of these and to meet Mr. Madden, too! Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to read the favorite Monte Carlo just get even better :-) You're welcome.
Never knew a dealer made a manual of these cars. The Aero Coupes were really special, but this is something else.
Hi RJ, I never knew it either. Happy to share this car and story with you :-) Lou
@@loucostabile You bring really nice stories to the masses. Thank you.
Once again I learn something new. Beautiful car, if only it was a 350. But even so I bet it is a fun car to drive.
Hi Jeff, Happy to read you learned something from this video :-) I'm learning all the time from the Caretakers and I find that to be so much fun. I agree, this would be a fun car to drive, Lou
Wow! That's really cool Lou. I was in High School in 1986, and my Dad picked up a 1985 Monte Carlo SS. They are great cars.
Hi Thomas, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Thank you for reviewing this unique car. It looks like it just rolled out of the factory. I am the original owner of a 1986 MC SS which I've kept in original stock condition. I bought it as a daily driver back then but now it's a fun weekend car. Thanks again for another great video.
Hi GMP NY, Happy to read this car with you :-) Glad to read you have a fun car too. You're welcome. Lou
Just when I think I know everything, I learn something new from 'My Car Story'!! How come I never hear of this before? Too busy raising a 1 year old at the time I guess. This should have been an RPO from the factory, not a special order. I always thought it was a shame that the later G-Body Monte's and 442's weren't available with stick. About 20 years ago I saw a '77 Pontiac Can Am with a 4-speed and console from a '73 Grand Am at Atco Raceway (RIP). Looked factory stock and was so cool. This car reminds me of that. You know how to pick the cool cars Lou!
Hi Tom (and JudyAnn), I didn't know about this one either, however when I heard about it I'm happy to be able to share the story with you, Lou
What a beautiful Monte Carlo! Definitely one of my top five favorite cars. I never knew about these manual cars. Awesome 👍💪
Hi Justin, Happy to read this one is in the Top 5 :-) I didn't know about them either, however when I found out about the story, and was happy to be able to share it with you, Lou
In Mexico they made them with the 350 motor manual transmission too but just in 1984 I believe they made the SS only that year only 👍
@@thechampion9525 wasn't the 454 a one year only monte carlo ss with a manual made in Mexico
@@stevenreeves8821 i don't think so it was the 350 I watched a Mexican video about this car

The fact that there's not an actual number of cars produced this way makes it a rare car indeed.....
Thank you for sharing you appreciate the rarity of this car.
Love the Monte's from the mid-80's. I've never heard of Schenk 5 speed.! Always learn something here! I would never have thought it would have a bench seat...just something that adds to its charm. However, it looks as though the seats are separate. I always thought a bench seat was one whole seat that when you moved one side, the other moved too. This looks as if it was two pieces. I better look up the definition of a bench seat. This car is beautiful and looks brand new! Anyone would be proud to own it!
Hi Brian, My pleasure learning and sharing with you. Thanks for viewing and sharing what you notice, Lou
45/55 Split Bench
@@TTA1451 Thanks, I thought so. So is this considered a bench seat?
Technically the option is:

Beautiful car Lou. Never seen one with a manual transmission before. I had a buddy in high school that had a white 87 SS. It was a nice car. The Night we graduated from High School a guy ran a red light and hit him in the passenger side just behind the door. It was still drivable. The impact busted the back glass out. Last I know of it's still in his dad's barn.
Hi PlymouthDuster225, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of car. Glad to read this car brings back memories of your Buddy's car in High School. Hope he gets it fixed and back on the road. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
This is a sharp looking Monte Carlo and the 5 speed shifter really makes it special. GM should have made this a standard option. I think the bench seat is a great idea too. Thanks Lou, this one's special and I appreciate this feature.
Hi Bruce H., Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) The 5 Speed would have been a nice option. You're welcome, Lou

WOW! How cool would it have been to order one of these new. Very cool. Heck, I thought my friend's 79 Malibu Wagon with a factory four speed was an oddity, but this takes it. Thank you for sharing as always. Take care Lou.
Hi Russell, Happy to receive a "WOW!" from you :-) Glad to read this one is "Very cool". My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
Yup, 1986 model year with the VIN for the win: 1G1 for US made Chevrolet, GZ for Monte Carlo, 37 for two door coupe, notchback special, G for 5.0L (305 CID) V8 with four barrel, RPO code "L69", High Output, X is a check digit, then G for the 1986 model year, R for Arlington, TX assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The "MW9" on the RPO decal indicates that this left the GMAD Arlington with the THM200-4R four speed automatic overdrive transmission. ARL Consulting Group (a marine consultant) occupied the Schenk property at 380 Terrace Ave where the dealership once stood. A Volvo dealer was also there for a time as well. Ed Quay was and still is in Pottstown, PA at 701 West High Street.
We got the SPID, glad you did: A90 for remote trunk release, ARL for Arlington, TX assembly, A01 for tinted glass all windows, A31 for power windows, AU3 for power door locks, CD4 for delay wiper system, C49 for rear window defogger, there is no C60 so this car was not factory equipped with air conditioning, D80 for rear spoiler, GT4 for 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, G80 for positraction rear end, L69 for the 5.0L (305 CID) V8 with four barrel, High Output, aka VIN code "G" engine, 12 for Silver exterior paint, all of the 82 codes refer to Gray interior trim, seat belts and other trim related items, among other codes. I would not have skipped air conditioning on this one.
That's the "CHMSL", (Center High Mount Stop Lamp), not a backup light. It was required with all cars sold in the US for the 1986 model year onward. Some mid-late 1985 models had it too.

Nice Monte Carlo SS, in excellent condition. It's about as rare as the time I saw what I believe was a white 84, unsuspectingly cruising down the street and all of a sudden when another car zoomed by it, police lights and a siren came on and it chased the speeder down in seconds. First and only time I saw a Monte Carlo SS police interceptor!
Hmmm, the Monte Carlo SS Police Interceptor...NICE!

Gm is far from that today unfortunately
I had a new 83 Z-28 with the 305 HO and a 5 speed manual. The motor was fairly spunky but that T-5 (or whatever it was), was a fragile, disposable trans that Chevy put on the streets for the public to test.

I had a couple of 87's years ago. The 5 speed and Tuned Port should have been factory options in my opinion.
Hi 96SS&94 Formula, I like your opinion. Lou
Should have also offered this conversion for the 442, Grand Prix, & Grand National
Very nice! Interesting, did not know about this.
My '85 is black with T-tops and limo black window tint. A bit of trivia: Every Monte Carlo SS VIN number begins with 1G1GZ... .
Hi Mark, Happy to share knowledge with you. I didn't know about this either. Lou
@@loucostabile If the owner ever swaps the engine for an LS, it would be a good idea to get a 9" Ford rear end. That's my plan anyway 😉. If you use the LS to its full potential, the stock rear will shatter. I don't see the owner flogging that car much though, it's just too rare.
Maybe I can clone mine to the Shenk? Shenk tribute car ... No, that's better suited to the plain jane Monte.
More trivia? There were no red MCSSs built.
Plus, every one has an eight VIN code digit of "G" for the RPO code "L69" 5.0L (305 CID) high output V8 with four barrel.
Not correct prior to 1985. 1983 and 1984 Monte Carlo SS models would have "1G1AZ" because the "A" meant manual seat belts. GM changed their VIN nomenclature a bit in 1985 on certain models.
@@googleusergp You're right about that. So '85 and up SSs have the 1G1GZ....... VIN number. LS Luxury Sport and base models won't.
Super cool, but the thing I want to know is how is the clutch activated, 1978 - 1981 Malibu and monte Carlos with a manual transmission used mechanical rods to activate the clutch, a 1986 Camaro would have used a hydraulic clutch. If my memory is correct a 1983 Camaro with a 5 speed would have had a bellhouseing set up for a mechanical linkage, so maybe G.M. used a variety of parts from different years for this car.
Hi Petemack6, Happy to read "Super cool" :-) Hmmm, not sure how the clutch is activated. Hoping a Viewer with knowledge can share. I drove several of the factory built Monte Carlo SSs (not this version) when brand new while working at a Chevy dealership and every single one of them was terrible. Everyone in the repair shop referred to them as Super Sh!t5. I am left completely knocked out, my tubesocked stocking feet 'n calves twitching as I think about chicks 😉😜. This absolutely gorgeously curvaceous Monte Carlo takes me right back to my JV baseball years, as a blue collar All-American 15 year old boy in Rockland County, NY! I knew of some older guys who had these, Lou. But never with a 5 speed and bench seat! Since I was always more of a smaller guy/mascot and 100% JV baseball⚾, I would most definitely be made to sit in that center seat, likely knocked out from being too hyper and girl crazy, my mullet haired head ping ponging to a big brother's shoulder on either side LMAO 🤣😂. That's JV Johnny, Lou! But Phillip's restoration of this SS is stunning. She still looks beautiful and badass today, no doubt! Nice monte but it didn't come from the FACTORY with the 5 speed. It's an aftermarket swap so really it's not that "rare" as I'm sure many were manual swapped aftermarket.
The ONLY monte ss that came from the FACTORY with a manual trans is the '84 that were only available for one year and only in mexico which also had an LM1 350 V8 hooked up to a 4 speed manual.
