He was a local guy growing up, but I never got to meet him. I did see him in a *tiny* club outside of Seattle back in 1999 or 2000, couldn't have been more than 60 people there. We traded horns a couple times, one of the best shows I've ever been to. He was absolutely on point.

@@Nothing-zw3yd This is the concert my buddy and I attended. We stayed at a hotel across the street from the venue so we could party a little. When we got back to the hotel Dio's band was sitting in the bar waiting on their bus. They were the only ones in there so we went in and were able to chat with all the band members, got autographs, and everything.

I had the same experience. I sneaked around the back of a venue after one of his shows in the mid 90's. Security caught me but just as I was about to be escorted off of the premises, his tour manager came out the back door and told the security guards to leave me be. He told me that Ronnie and the rest of the band were cooling down with some beers on the tour bus and he would come out and meet me in 20 minutes. About 45 minutes later, i'm standing next to the tour bus and now there is a line of fans about a mile long behind me waiting to meet him. When he came out he was so nice. He signed my banner. He literally had more questions for me than I had for him. He wanted to know my name, where I was from what I did for a living and more. That was a great experience in my life.

One of Ronnie's underappreciated singing qualities is his unparalleled enunciation/clarity in his singing... he is one of the VERY few singers that you can clearly understand every word in every song - to the point where you don't need an album sleeve or lookup the lyrics online to learn the words.

"Dio" Literally translates to "God". His real name was Ronald James Padavona, with "Dio" as a stage name he adopted. When the Beatles remarked they were "Bigger than Jesus", the whole world was up in arms about those arrogant little shits making such a comparison. Ronnie names himself "God", and everyone was like "Ok, he's earned it".
Good catch at the end, lol. Listen to the fade-out... most vocalists would have made that the centerpiece, the climax of the whole song, and he uses it as a fade, lol. That's some next-level singing.

There is no arguing about how good a singer he was, is and will be, but he is also a great storyteller. Every song is a micro-story and he is the dungeon master. There is only one other person capable of such magic (that i can remember) and that is Bruce Dickinson. 🤘🤘🎄🍺

I wish someone like Julia reacted to Swords in the Wind, live in Mexico. Here's Eric Adams, a singer that is effectively Dio's contemporary still singing a song that spans 3 octaves and is so full of storytelling, it's past time one of the best reactors tried something that shows what he's worth!

Love watching you analyze music. You’re intelligent, detailed, knowledgable. You catch not only technique, tone, breathing, but also emotional delivery. Love your depth. Plus you’re easy on the eyes; so what more could a music nerd like me ask for? Great vids.

I love Holy Diver, however I think there are many different songs with the better presentation of Dio vocal skills e.g. Rainbow in the dark, Gates of Babylon, Children of the sea, the Sign of the Southern Cross, Mistreated (live), The Last in line (1983 live), Bible Black

You really should check out Dio singing live, it really was his element, especially the live videos from when he was in his prime in the 70´s and 80´s. Some great examples: Rainbow - live in Munich 1977, everything is great in that video but the songs Catch the rainbow and Mistreated are great examples. Black Sabbath - Heaven and hell - Live 1980, Dio - Don't Talk To Strangers -Live At The Spectrum 1986.

Fun fact. The bass and backing vocals are by the excellent Jimmy Bain. Jimmy was also the bassist and did the BV's in Stargazer.
When Ronnie and Jimmy played together, Ronnie was always exceptional as was Jimmy. Jimmy was a lead singer in his own right in the band Wild horses.

I love Dio! He was a master at bringing life to a song. I saw Dio with Sabbath and also saw him solo and both times he brought live what he produced in the studio. He as Meat Loaf would bring a song to life and draw you in. Dio was a trumpet player and he stated that is probably why he has such incredible breath control. We have lost both and they are both missed.

Ronnie wasn't only a master of his craft. When you can't find *anyone* to say a bad word about him, but have an endless amount of accounts of fans who he was very friendly and respectful to and even made an effort to remember their names, you have a winner at being a good human being on your hands. Level: expert.
Granted, what he wasn't particularly good at was music videos, but nobody's perfect, not even Ronnie. ^^

”Rainbow Eyes” is one of my all time favorite songs by Rainbow and Dio. My first Rainbow album was Long Live Rock 'n' Roll back in 1978. I quickly picked up the first two albums. I have also picked up his albums from Elf. RJD is a genre unto himself.

I wonder if Julia Nilon ever heard Roger Glover and Guests - Love is All (1974). It was a project by ex-Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, and Ronnie James Dio did the lead vocals on this song. It was a hit in Netherlands and Belgium, probably also because of the animated cartoon with a singing frog.

One of the most, if not the most iconic voices regardless of genre. The man was born to sing. What is amazing, at least to me, is that he never took vocal lessons. He started playing classical trumpet and that's how he learned breathing techniques. I have been fortunate to see him live many times, from Rainbow to Black Sabbath, and when he went solo. He is honestly more impressive live than studio. Watching/listening to him sing is like storytime. He just captivates you.

Dio is one of the few people I cried over when they died. I did not even cry when my dad died, but I balled my eyes out when Dio died. I've seen Dio in concert 15 times, met and talked with him 1 time, and my life is better for it.

Julia, you should react to “The Chase” on Queensrÿche’s Operation Mindcrime ll album. It’s a duet song with Geoff Tate & Rodney James Dio. Imagine those too awesome singers trading off on the same song. I actually talked briefly with RJD on that song, an he said he had a blast doing it.
