Good overview, and quite accurate. Just a couple of things. What you were drinking was Grappa Miel not grappa. It is a liqueur made by adding honey to grappa. You can order traditional grappa as well and you will find it identical to the Italian original. As far as your lunch, I think there may have been some communication issues. The lettuce on your plate was simply a garnish, if you order a salad with your meal you get a traditional salad. You could have also ordered other sides as well. I've never seen anyone get plain rice as a side in a restaurant in Uruguay. As far as mate goes...well it's a national obsession (much like football) that is unmatched even in other mate drinking nations such as Argentina. You can go into a restaurant and ask for hot water and they will happily fill your thermos. There are even vending machines that disperse hot water. It is drunk in all seasons, at all times of day and locations. You will even find it being drunk by politicians while at the national legislature during debates.

I lived in Uruguay for 3 years back in the 80's - it looks much the same! Your video brought back good memories - there in the cafe, man, - it could have been 1988!. Yerba Mate actually gives you a slight narcotic buzz if you keep on drinking it - it doesn't get you high, or stoned, or wrecked, but it definitely stimulates - and it makes you think differently about things and focuses your attention on stuff, but you need quite a few refills to get there, hence the flasks! One thing I didn't see was the political posters everywhere, which is a great improvement - the leftist parties used to really degrade the city with literally millions of posters pasted on the walls, beautiful old buildings, the sides of fountains and the plinths of statues all would get defaced - it seems they no longer do that. Uruguay was really safe too, a very non-violent population (when I was there). It's also as flat as a pancake - its highest point only being 500 meters above sea level. It was hard to make a good living there though, all your basic needs would be covered on a local salary, but it's really difficult to start with nothing - for an average Joe there's no surplus of funds, so you can't save nor invest and car ownership is for the middle classes, - or at least, that's the way it was when I was there. re: maté, you do actually move the bombilla. It depends on the person serving but all the old timers including my Uruguayan parents move the bombilla to get varying degrees of maté flavor intensity. Whoever told you they don't move the Bonilla was probably talking about their own particular style or they're just not good at it. Like eggs, many, many people make eggs but I've had terrible eggs and delicious eggs... I happen to make delicious eggs of course. I've had people serve me amazing maté and of course, terrible maté and it all comes down to how you manage water and bombilla placement and how you tend to the llerba throughout the process... it's all about the process since there's obviously only two ingredients for the most part. Great video never the less.
Im from Buenos Aires, and i only move the bombilla before refilling the mate. Slight tap on the side of the bombilla with the thermo, move it 5mm to the side. And use that gap to pour the water to the bottom. Thats all the moving you need.
@@Coyote27981 I was just in Uruguay visiting family and there were several different styles of prepping and serving and moving or not moving the bombilla. Like all things in life, there’s not just one way to do things. It’s worth exploring other possibilities as it’s those explorations that lead to new discoveries. Thanks for sharing you method. Try moving your bombilla around the mate over the course of your drinking time, there may a something of value there… or not.
A friendly correction to the vlog. Luis Suarez, beside being one of the most famous Uruguayan footballers, and Liverpool Football Club, he was famous for biting the opposition's defenders, something that he got fined, and banned from playing a few games, but, he didn't handle the ball. That was Diego Maradona from Argentina in a match against England in World Cup 1982. Maradona, later on went on to claim that it was God's hand that scored the goal that knocked England out of the competition.😁

How is Uruguay for vegans? Last month we had a two-week holiday in Argentina: BA, Ushuaia, El Calafate, and back to BA. Foreign credit cards now provide the Dollar Blue rate. We were informed by our tour guide for the Recoleta Cemetary that Visa pays the blue dollar rate. We had to pay by card to enter the Recoleta Cemetary as they don't accept cash. I used my Visa card and discovered that I was only charged GBP 4.74 entrance fee to the Recoleta Cemetery. I then started to use my Visa card and discovered that I was getting an exchange rate of AR$340 to 1 US$. Which is not too different from the current blue rate of AR$380 to 1 US$. We found lots of vegan restaurants and most other restaurants have at least a vegetarian option. We did not starve during our Argentine holiday!

Fortunately, Uruguay was never a “socialist” country, it has always been opened to the free market system. The fact that the economy wasn’t that liberalised doesn’t mean it was a socialist State.
Uruguay should not try to let billionaires control their country like Usa . Uruguays gov protected them from forced vaccines. Uruguay is for the worker . Usa is for the billionaire investor. Uruguay has not yet and should not sell out . Usa belongs entirely to billionaires now . Everyone else is working for them and poor .
In mythology The Ourea were the primeval gods or spirits of the mountains , and the word for mountains in Greek.Uraguay means a country of no mountains . Poros is one of the greek words for sea, Paraguay means no sea .
The first large building in your video is what we call the University of the Republic, which, by the way is free as the rest of the education right from kinder garden. Of course there are private options on all levels for the ones who decide to pay for it. Go figure. You should have gone to Mercado del Puerto located by the Montevideo harbor. The foods( and grilled meats) are out of this world. Another thing : although Uruguay export high quality rice, Uruguayans are not too crazy about it though it is consumed there, not as much as pasta which is another very important staple in our diet. You don't seem to have tried pizza which is something to make a video about it. Regarding of how expensive Uruguay could be compared to other Latin American countries, one has to consider what one gets in terms of quality. You can make it more affordable if you stay with some locals and live like they do. No country in the world can give you all they can offer if you just go there for a few days, Uruguay is not exception. By the way : Uruguay is the second smallest country in S. America after Guyana, though is larger than Holland. Nice video, do go back and expend more time in there, there's much more than Montevideo to experience. Greetings from Toronto.
Para que nunca más tengas problema entre Uruguay y Mejico una bien fácil, te ases un buen asado con tus amigos mirando un partido o contando unos chistes y ahí nunca más te olvidaras quien es quien.
Uruguay is not the smallest country in South America for one, second it's not the little cousin of Argentina and even less of Brasil. It's condescending to say a country that most people don't know, when you realize it has been around for almost 200 years, it says a lot about most people's education, doesn't it? Also its not a short trip from Buenos Aires, its full of history and offers so many things, that Argentina can't offer. Next time I'd advise you to learn about the country's history a bit more, before you make those comments, specially if you have people that listen to you. Thank you.
Jessica, you know not everything is personal right? Maybe you're offended, I guarantee most Uruguayans aren't. I not in any way was trying to diminish anything. How about you find some empathy in your heart and put some good out into the world. Please don't take my words out of context. Also don't watch my channel, seems you can't handle it. No, Thank you.
Thank you, Jessica for putting this this "want a be" Christopher Columbus in his place. I live thousands of miles away from Uruguay and know a lot more than him about your wonderful country. Also, this info. Uruguay is bigger than any country in Central America or the Caribbean.

re: maté, you do actually move the bombilla.
It's mate, not "maté".
"maté" means "I killed". The beverage is called "mate".
Hot water, or cold water like in Paraguay?
hot water!!!!
Is it safe over there
Well it’s expensive, but
They have the highest minimum wage in the region
Funny how that works.
Very useful video Fully explained
God bless you
Well, if we ever get invaded at least we have eagles to destroy enemy drones.
That’s definitely something
A friendly correction to the vlog. Luis Suarez, beside being one of the most famous Uruguayan footballers, and Liverpool Football Club, he was famous for biting the opposition's defenders, something that he got fined, and banned from playing a few games, but, he didn't handle the ball. That was Diego Maradona from Argentina in a match against England in World Cup 1982. Maradona, later on went on to claim that it was God's hand that scored the goal that knocked England out of the competition.😁
I'm talking about the hand ball against Ghana in the world cup. They missed the free kick and Uruguay won in the end.
Robbed Ghana in the World Cup by handling the ball
It was a tactical foul and he was rightfully given a red card. No one was robbed. Player should have made the penalty kick.
No, not exactly cheap for gringos. Yes, safe it is - day or night. But it is affordable if you aren’t desperate
Looks fun!
Thank you! You made me want to come back to my "paisito"
Don't go away without having a chivito!!! ❤
Montevideo see you in September
I would say the second smallest country in South America. The first one is Surinam
Hi are you live in Uruguay?
URUGUAY you had me at grilled meat.

There is official DJI service in Montevideo. Try to repare your drone there.
I’m long gone! But thanks
I've been there. I had a great time.
What destroyed your dron wasn't an eagle - at list the big bird you show in the picture - This is a carancho. It only eat already dead animals, and the sheep's eye balls when they can't get up after the rain because the wool is wet and is too heavy.
Wow!
That's new to me
How is Uruguay for vegans? We did not starve during our Argentine holiday!
in Montevideo there are plenty of options for vegans, but its really expensive
You might want to check out Jon Levi’s channel about a precious civilisation that built these castle like buildings globally, keep an open mind and enjoy your altered perception of reality. 😜
Good start with Montevideo pronounced correctly😅
how do you have pretty good pronunciation of most of the place names except for "Uruguay"?
When I was there, I saw lots of Americans, and I didn't know why, maybe because it's a tourist place..?
A lot of people retire there because of the no taxes
Where can I donate a parrot drone for you?
What is a parrot drone friend
Fortunately, Uruguay was never a “socialist” country, it has always been opened to the free market system. The fact that the economy wasn’t that liberalised doesn’t mean it was a socialist State.
He may have read social democracy and got confused because of that.
La libertad economica de un país determina que tan socialista es
Socialy liberal and economicaly conservative
Uruguay should not try to let billionaires control their country like Usa . Uruguays gov protected them from forced vaccines. Uruguay is for the worker . Usa is for the billionaire investor. Uruguay has not yet and should not sell out .
Usa belongs entirely to billionaires now . Everyone else is working for them and poor .
Why, wasn't the Frente Amplio a combination of "socialists and communists"? Did you forget about that?
In mythology The Ourea were the primeval gods or spirits of the mountains , and the word for mountains in Greek.Uraguay means a country of no mountains . Poros is one of the greek words for sea, Paraguay means no sea .
lol luv yor lil theory on market protection, if thts the case y r argentina and brazil cheaper do thy have deregulated economy's?
You got the music wrong.
Everyone pronounces Uruguay differently.
You're pissed ? imagine how pissed eagle was ?? lol, Cheers !
Sad the way they've ruined those beautiful historical buildings & architecture with all that horrible graffiti. 😢
You are damn right!!
@gustav champoski Uruguay is Spanish colony not Portuguese
Uruguay is Spanish colony right ?
Luis Suarez is world renowned for being one of the best footballers of all time. Not just for one handball and biting
LOL
One of the best of all time?
Please.
Maybe the best Player from Uruguay of all time, but quite a stretch to label him “one of the best of all time”

I don’t need to. I’m a Barca fan. They have had many, many great players.
Suarez would have trouble cracking the top ten over there.
As for Liverpool, Steven Gerrard is just example of a guy who was better than Luis Suarez six days a week and twice on Sunday.
I’m not saying Suarez isn’t/wasn’t talented. The original poster claims Suarez is “one of the best of all time.”
I wouldn’t go that far- that’s all I’m saying.

@@kaypie3112 they didn't play the same position so not really a great comparison. Different position, different styles, very different personalities. Further, Gerrard is a Scouser. You kind of highlighted why Uruguayans would be high on Vampiro and high Liverpool fans would be high on Gerrard.
