Great video! Another thing that could be done to keep the folded up part up - would be stitching in the ditch on each of the side seams. Thanks for your videos!
I was at my local Janome sewing centre on Friday and the lady behind the counter was describing this very method for hemming jeans. I make my jeans and she was flabbergasted because apparently there are 'long" jeans now haha! I would have thought that someone working at a sewing machine shop would have realised that fit plays a big part in the reasons why someone sews a garment. It's really funny how you pop this video up when only on Friday I was having a discussion about the same method. And yes that's right! A hammer is a vital tool in jeans making - you can really get your frustrations out 😂.
I have used the same technique without the topstitching. Oh my goodness, the topstitching takes it to a much higher level. I’ll be going back and too stitching the jeans I have already shortened. Thank you so much, Whitney.
I used this method a year ago, except I cut the jeans on the inside close to the thread seam. I like your idea of serging or using a zigzag stitch. I will follow this method in the future. Thank you❣️
Hi Whitney - in case you didn't know, many of us followers of Janine Sews' RUclips channel were shouting your praises as Janine was struggling with cohesiveness in her wardrobe. By the time I added my comment, loads of people had already recommended your channel. She has been following your guide for building basics. Thought I'd share the love!
This is great!! I have done this method before but the zipper foot and the top stitching is a fantastic tip! Would never have thought of either of those. Thanks Whitney! I hope you are recovering from the wonderful weekend and can rest up before your next class. I am still on a high from it. SO MUCH FUN! You are so lovely!! Inside and out! ♥
Thank you for this easy to follow and well explained tutorial! I hemmed my pair of jeans and my husband's khaki work pants looks so much neater! By the way, he rolled, not cuffed, his pants. 🤗Doing this was such a confidence booster!
Wow, thank you so much for this! I have to admit I have the opposite problem - I have a very long inseam, but my daughter is only 5 feet tall, so even petites can be too long sometimes. This is awesome now that flares and boot cuts are back in style.
This is an excellent way to hem jeans. I never thought about using a zipper foot. After 9 and half hours we finally got to Florida Saturday late afternoon. I think I’m still tired but feeling more normal. Unpacked done & I got quite a bit unpacked for sewing. I’m tickled pink because the owner of the house got a super comfy chair that swivels & rolls where I sew. Last time was just a plain kitchen chair. So up & down quite a bit. Off to see family today & major grocery shopping tomorrow & then hopefully some sewing. How was the in person sewing thing?
Love this method of hemming jeans and your explanation is so clear-sometimes that concept of the folding up halfway to get the whole amount or taking a seam in half of what you need to get the whole amount seems backwards until you learn to trust the math….great video!
I'll have to put some pictures up on the channel! I do have complete photographic evidence over on Instagram, but I can show off some pictures once the second class is finished!
Recently the RTW jeans ive been buying in a “tall” size for the past five years are now 4 inches longer than they used to be 🤨 For the first time in my life pants are too long (I’m 5’9”)!! This is perfect as the ‘regular’ length is still too short 🙄 Thanks for the tutorial!
While I have never bought "tall" anything, I can sympathize. Petite pants are often too short for me, but the regulars are too long. I hope this does. help!
So timely! I just got a pair of bell-bottom jeans that are at least 6” too long. I am going to have to cut some length off but I am having trouble figuring out how to adjust the circumference of the original cuff to be smaller (the bottoms are really A-line). Do you have any tips for opening an inseam to make it narrower but hiding the stitching? Would the same technique work for width as well as length shortening? Also, any special tips or considerations If the denim is stretchy? Thanks!
That is one of the issues with shortening the flares larger amounts. You will have to go in and narrow the leg a bit so it fits. I would do something similar to this at the side seam. Just pinch out the amount you need to lose at each side seam equally and line up the hem so you don't have to unpick the original, then you can do this technique to shorten. Does that make sense?
I was watching this while cutting out on pants and my husband was in the room having a coffee break. He was so intrigued and as a math guy totally understood the hem filing up. I am also barely 5'2 but long torso short legs so this could be handy... Although I think I may venture into trying to sew a pair from scratch too. Thanks for the great video.
@@connier.4560do you mean like “Frocktail” type events? There are a few of those that happen around the US. I know there’s one in Chicago the beginning of June, but I’ve seen them pop up on Instagram in cities across the US.
I didn't have an issue with these jeans, but depending on how much length you are taking out (which will effect the circumference difference), I'm usually able to just ease in the excess from the hem into the smaller leg. If it's drastic, you might need to open up the side seam and let out/take in to get them closer, though.
Thank you! I just had a client request this alteration but it would be shortened about 6 inches. Circumference of original hem is much larger from spot of where new hem will be. So it looks like I'll have to taper original hem before I can match the circumference of new length spot. Unless you can recommend something else? She took jeans home to launder and shrink but she'll be back....
You asked for some suggestions for audiobooks . My suggestion would be Anne Cleeve from UK. Writes a lot of police/detective……another suggestion is to download some of the musicals…Andrew Lloyd Webber. My fair lady , sound of music ,the Disney films…..a good sing a long….in the car eats up the miles. Safe travels. Joh
You've already done a couple of videos on pattern matching-here is one: ruclips.net/video/J2upYoyRZTY/видео.html I would like to see changing a regular button front to a hidden placket....(?) possible(?) Thank you for all you do!! :+) Have a great week-end!
It's a minor irritation but I can guarantee, on every project, I'll get right round pinning a hem or along a seam, only to find my pins facing the wrong way! Pesky! 🙄
Great video! Another thing that could be done to keep the folded up part up - would be stitching in the ditch on each of the side seams. Thanks for your videos!
You are correct. I actually saw Michelle Winn show this same method on Instagram on Friday as well 😂. She stitched in the ditch to keep hers up.
This is a great idea! Especially for growing kids, thrifted jeans, etc.
It is great for growing kids!
Thanks for refreshing my memory! I did know how to do this about 15 yrs ago, but I forgot. I can now save the video and go from there 🎃

That is funny! I also totally agree that the sewing room hammer is key to my stress management 😂.
Thank you! This came at a perfect time. My son came home with jeans that need to be shortened. Now I can do it without having to cut them off.
Great!
This is amazing. I've just hemmed my jeans using this technique and I'm so pleased with the result. Thank you, Whitney😊

I really enjoy your videos. You know how the sewists in the UK have "specials"? Do you know of anything like that in the USA?
Please tell me more about "specials"! Like The Great British Sewing Bee?
@@TomKatStitchery no, sorry, autocorrect got me again. Sewcials is what I meant. I see them for quilters but not for wardrobe sewists.

How do you deal with the wider part hem than the leg part.

I think you might be right. 6" is a lot of length to remove so I think you will have to taper the original hem.

I think you could make this much shorter. Thanks for the good info
You are so welcome!
Less chatter, more demonstration
Wide leg jeans? Flares? Oh, you mean bell bottoms. 😊 This is the best. You are so un-cool if you hem your jeans.
😂 totally! Ava had on an outfit the other day was exactly like what my Mom wore in high school 😂.
great idea, but I think your posting should read-"shortening jeans with the original hem"...........
