I been to the Wedge only three times in my life. I love this break and it's always been my favorite. It's breaks so close so all ur dang energy isn't wasted paddling out. I haven't been in over 20 years and this video brought back some sweet memories. Thank you for this video!

I spent a day at Hookipa with a six pack just sitting and watching once. It was a great day.
Wish I grew up somewhere with surf but it was the mountains on a snowboard for us. This raw footage reminds me of that.
    Thanks!

I surfed the wedge back in the 70's! It was and still is a radical short break! Glad I did it but being from Carlsbad, there was much better surfing to the south of the Wedge!

Sean O'Brieon because it is so close to shore, after you get pounded your already standing up on shore with your nose way above the waterline

These videos that you make are awesome. The Wedge is such a great place for spectators because the waves are close to shore; and they come in just one after another, so fast. Also, you see great surfing; and just about every single ride ends with a hilarious wipe out.

WHO: Those that care to! WHAT: Challenge themselves! WHEN: Conditions are right! WHERE: The Newport Wedge! WHY: ???
To experience a wave that can literally throw you out of the water and on to the beach! Again , again, and again.
Santa Cruz surfer that has had the opportunity to experience it 3 times, strangely enough in the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

Thats the refraction. Its a completely different wave from the one you see toss over. The surfers and skimboarders catch that little wave, which is the refraction from the wave previous to the big one, and ride that small leftover refraction onto the new big set. And the process repeats. its almost like they are catching a ride onto the wave, its how skimboarders can reach those waves super far out since they can't just slide out there. When the refraction and big wave meets its like the two add their heights to each other.

spent a lot of time at the wedge in the 90s. I now live in wisconsin. I've tried to explain to people what it's like. They don't get it. They think I must have been weak or something. It isn't easy staring down an 8ft + wave with less than a foot of water to get through it. I've been slammed pretty hard more than a few times there. But damn.....good times. All my family still lives in california. I'd love to move back but can't take all the traffic, cost of living, surrounded by homelessness and all kinds of other crazy shit.

The back wash actually helps to soften the power of the shore break. Without the backwash these waves would be unridable on the inside. It's also why the wave goes from 3 feet to 12 feet all the same wave. The back wash hits the wave and makes it stand up combined with the sand bar underneath. A crazy and awesome wave even though it's a short ride you get incredible sections.

never had any attacks at the wedge but on the other side of jetty a lady was attacked 3-4 months ago and almost died, there were 12-15 great whites hanging around orange county before summer time for a couple months, about a mile away a shark was pictured in the light of the wave in shore break 10 ft from shore, was pretty scary about 7 ft one

Virgin @Wedge '81/ While boogie boarding, I got horrendously flipped (just right) and curled over, face first doing a very brief handstand(those waves can break almost right at the damn beach!) while my legs/feet went right on going. As the wave started to break after its curl, my spine started to curl before its break! I swear I could literally hear(sound transferred through my body to my ears!) what sounded to me like damn near all of my spine's joints f'n popping like giant knuckles! First and last time for that monster! I'd confidently wager the first example of usage surfer lingo "gnarly" was first used to describe The Wedge

I dont think you have to get out bro... here in Australia if a beach is closed its just a suggestion to get out of the water for your own safety. After all if you enter the ocean its at your own risk... It should never be up to the local police to tell you to get out... I would have stayed out it was going off! :D

You can get ticketed; I'm not sure for how much. People lots of times end up getting arrested if they get aggro about it. I do envy the Australian culture of "use at your own risk." That's how it used to be in California before we got in invaded by developers and their lawyers and thugs who made it illegal to get hurt, or get naked, or sleep on the beach, or all the cool stuff that made California what it was.

yeah first legitimate shark attack in Orange County to my knowledge, usually its just shark sightings and they put up signs at your own risk

For some reason, "sharks" is not really what I would be worried about in this punchbowl.

you can see in the first minute of the vid ..that any of those waves, if you were to catch / ride them, would just end in total Punishment.. around 0:50 ..both those guys can just be glad they didn't catch that

I think because the pull of the board could be dangerous when they wipe out or the boards being thrown around underwater could seriously injure you if you're close to it. Idk though don't take my word for it
