To learn how to repair your ceiling before painting watch 👉🏼 ruclips.net/video/gSXFjWVdHvA/видео.html cheers!
It actually does help deflect noise a bit when you have a space that's open with a lot of hard surfaces . I live in an old house With laugh and plaster walls and hardwood floors . The reason that a lot of this was put in was to catch the echoes and bouncing sound and it actually works a little bit … In the main open part of the house where you'd think you would echo more the living room and dining room have this ceiling but the bedroom never had it done. .. When I was moving in the bedrooms That didn't have it definitely echoed sound out of them much more than the rooms that did have it
Hi there, My husband died last year, and I have lots of tubes of caulk, but it is all silicone for kitchen and bathroom.
I won't be ready to paint for a least a week. Can I use this instead of quick dry to put an edge between
the ceiling and wall?
Also, could you tell me which Caulk has the high gloss finish for around sinks and tubs? The ones my hubby bought have a dull finish.
Thanks so much
@HomeRenoVisionDIY I am actually looking to have popcorn ceilings installed and was curious how to add the glitter. I cant find any video on how to add it but i grew up around it and want it. Any advice is appreciated.
This gives me some Bob Ross vibes and I love it. So grateful for all this helpful information!
If you damp the roller ( soak in water and wrap it with your fingers the ok sign and run it across to drain out as much water as possible) your paint edges are smooth and flowing. It gets few minutes slower to dry and that’s great to overlap edges without seeing streak lines. I did that on my ceiling with just one coat, no visible streak lines. This is how fine artists do on canvas.
We bought a smoker's house that had popcorn ceilings, with some dirt and tar buildup. With no way to clean it and needing it move-in ready in a matter of days, we used a 3/4 inch nappy roller, kilz and then paint, gave it 2 coats over in different directions, and it still looks great 4 years later.
Did it get rid of the smell?
I wanted to share a roller tip I use. When painting the ceiling, start rolling about 12-18 inches away from wall. Area you start usually has the most paint, and you can go back over that spot to even it out if needed
That's a great idea!
I stood on a portable aluminum ladder, used a medium roller, and painted it like I would any other ceiling, using and overlapping crisscross pattern. No problems, turned out beautifully. Most people can't paint a ceiling steadily from the floor, unless it's 7.5 feet or lower. My ceilings are slightly over 8 feet tall.
That said, it's easier for a homeowner, who isn't a professional painter doing it everyday, to use a ladder. At least, that's my experience, having remodelled 3 homes during my lifetime.
Best roller tip for ceilings in my opinion is ditching the cage 9" roller. Go to a double-ended 12" or 18" with a 15mm knap for semi-smooth surfaces. I've painted numerous textured ceilings in BC, Canada with no problems and its incredibly fast because of the doubled surface area coverage per roll
I repaired the popcorn ceiling in my spare bedroom. I used a roller and Dunn Edward's primer and it actually matched the original color of the ceiling! Yes, it took about 3 gallons of primer to finish off the room.
On a separate note, a roofing contractor put his foot through my other bedroom ceiling (condo) so they hired another contractor to repair the hole in the ceiling and painted it. He used a spray gun and it turned out krappy, but better than what was there before.
My father was a painter and I learned from him not to use a spray gun if you can help it.
Great Video Jeff! I use those foam roller 20 years ago! Never like them. The loose stipple eventually fill the roller after a while. Paint pick up is less having to go to the tray more often. I prefer a 20 to 25 mil sleeve. Holds tons of paint. I just finished 2 bedroom ceilings today! Rooms 12x20 rolled one half then the other half. I agree, I only use FLAT paint for my ceilings! Cheers! Love your videos! The Gooseneck Guy!
After looking at Paint Rollers for Popcorn Ceilings, I read about Wooten Popcorn/Acoustical paint brush for Popcornh Ceilings. I used a regular paint brush as you demonstrated, it did the job,but it was not as easy.
Glad I watched this! Always helpful to know the tools of the trade!
Thanks. I'm starting a high $ interior job for a couple that can lead to lots of other good jobs.
Hey Jeff, I just want to take a second to thank you sooo much for these videos. I have been able to take what I have learned from your videos and go down to florida and volunteer with a non-profit organization and help people get back on their feet whether it be demo work or helping them rebuild their homes. So thanks a ton and keep up the good work!
Great job! Wish i could do that!

Awesome videos.
Great video not too long and very informative. Definitely helped me out as I’m about to repaint a popcorn ceiling for my mom so no pressure lol
Thanks Jeff! If you run into this, can you please make a video of how you patch, paint, and colour/texture match a popcorn ceiling when replacing, say, an old light fixture with pot-lights.
Yes 👍
Hey that’s a really good tip. (Caulking the corner)
Super helpful. I'm about to have a paint a popcorn ceiling soon, but the previous inhabitant painted it blue...I'm not sure what kind of paint it is. Should I use a certain type of paint that won't show the blue after a couple of coats?
Awesome!! Love the content! Thanks so much for sharing and giving us your tips
My pleasure!!
Thanks. Best video out there. My ceiling looks great!
You're the best, thank you for the lesson.
I wish I had these brilliant tips last week, when I had to paint a room. Thanks a lot for the video anyway!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Jeff ....very helpful tutorial 👍❤️

Great tips! 👍 I'm so thankful that I've never had popcorn ceilings to deal with. What a monumental pain! 🤯
Glad it was helpful!
Wow thats a great tip love it and will be trying
Another timely video, awesome!
Cheers JK
Thank you for the awesome tip.
Really helpful! Thanks!
Short and simple video, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Did two coats on my popcorn ceiling with a roller and there's lines. 😂
Thanks for the video, been auper annoyed with it and been delayed waiting to do my floors because of this.
Thank for the tips will try this weeken
Thanks for the video! We have a high ceiling with a crease in the middle at the high point. Is it best to start at the center high point and work down toward the walls and windows? I’m so nervous to mess this up!
Hey Jeff, is it cool if you can show us a video of how to remove a popcorn ceiling? It would be interesting to know how to do it
I am sure we will get to that. Cheers!
All I want to know is how to destroy my popcorn ceiling without actually destroying my ceiling.
Also asbestos stuff
Hire out asbestos removal. Get professional help and stay safe.
We did our popcorn ceilings (1300 sqft home). If it’s never been painted you can just spray with water and scape it off. If it’s painted like ours was, we had to dry scrape first. This cut away many of the low points allowing water to penetrate the actual texture material. Than spray with water and scrape it free. A light orange peel texture after to hide any imperfections and it’s “perfect every time.”
Take a small sample & have it analyzed for asbestos. Found out mine is a level 1. No big deal. Some are worse. If yours is worse, have it removed by the pros. A lot safer that way.
Thank you for your information I will appreciate.
Wow . Thanks . This posted just in time for my honey do list .
Perfect!
When painting an unpainted popcorn ceiling are you using a water based paint or oil based.
Do you have a recommended acrylic free ceiling paint to use? Everything Sherman Williams and Behr seem to have acrylic in them.
As a professional I refuse to do them. Almost every time I get large patches that become detached from the surface and goop up the roller as well as fall to the floor. The loose areas are probably already to drop and waiting to get a bit wet to make a mess. I have sprayed them before with perfect results but just find it easier to move on to another job.
Thank you very helpful
I’ve done exactly the same to my garage’s ceiling.
Hi Jeff, thank you for this video. I will be starting popcorn ceiling painting soon. I did not find any link to slit foam roller. In Amazon, there is not much options to select from. Can you please provide the link and NAP size of the roller. I will be using either ProMar 200 or Spec Rite; both FLAT sheen. Please advise.
What paint do you recommend? All the ceiling paint I was looking at was acrylics based.
Having a hard time finding non-acrylic ceiling paint. Can you recommend? I'm in Canada as well - ideally something I can find at Rona, Lowes or Home Depot. Thanks!
Yup. Been there sooooooo many times! I haven't seen anyone local that actually carries the split foam rollers though. And I've asked direct at sherwin williams and PPG.
Weird. in my area even lowe's and home depot have them. Cheers Exit

What is the best paint brand to use for popcorn ceilings?
Stalactites?? 🤣 That's about how my stipple ceilings look to me!! Thanks for the tutorial, Jeff!!
Wow Sandy, souds like you have an old plaster ceiling. Cheers!
I hate those "popcorn" ceilings. Our house came with it, and for years we dealt with it with cobwebs in the texture, dirt, dust, and raining down the "popcorn" crap. Finally was able to start a remodel and paint job to our rooms, and started to paint it with a roller, didn't like how it was looking with the "popcorn' still there, and decided to remove it. I took a simple 14 inch sheetrock blade that screwed to an extension, a spray bottle of water, and sprayed lightly, scraped, and took the junk off. A little Kilz primer, then flat white paint. Goodbye crap "popcorn".
yeah i just bought a house that has it. what a nightmare.
How flat was the ceiling once you were done? Contemplating doing the same but I’m worried about making it look straight.
@@monicaolaru5228 Removing the popcorn stuff wasn't too hard but a messy thing. A little spritz of water mist, wait a few seconds or so, scrape it off with a knife. Once you do it you can smooth it out by sanding it. I wouldn't say it leaves it too straight or flat but it's better than popcorn junk. You'd need to let it dry for a couple days or so before sanding or doing anything else to make sure it's dried out well. You can look around to see if you got all the popcorn stuff and here you can even do detailed sanding for smoothness or leave it rough, maybe even splatter a little sheetrock mud here and there and smear it around if you want a little more less smooth...lol. Once you remove it and let it dry you can see what feels good for you. Just be ready to get dirty, floors dirty, and feel like you've been in a popcorn popper yourself...lol. Good luck.
@@TimfromAlabama Sigh. Thank you, appreciate you sharing the penance that is popcorn ceiling 🙂
Hi I want to paint a fan patterned textured ceiling that has had a wood burning stove in it for many yrs. The ceiling is no longer white. Do you recommend a primer first?
Hey Jeff,
I did the same thing you did when you were young and “flattened” out the paint on my ceiling. I see streaks. Is there any other way to fix this without taking the popcorn off? Can I try the foam roller now?
What about an unprimed unpainted popcorn ceiling? I knew going in that I was going to use more paint because it hasn’t been previously primed or painted.
The issue I’m having is roller marks like crazy. Even after the second coat.
I used a foam split roller and rolled in both directions and still have roller marks.
You can only see the mark when looking at the ceiling from one direction. Looking from the other direction the ceiling looks fine.
What do I do now? Should a 3rd coat fix it?
what kind of pain should you use to pain popcorn ceiling?
To prevent roller marks Jeff you want to roll one way, then come back and roll the opposite way. Do the same with spraying the ceiling as well. Trust me, I’ve done it for years. Zero complaints
Can you give us the link for that special popcorn ceiling roller brush?
I’m so glad I found your video! I’m about to paint my popcorn ceiling(which I absolutely hate!!). I’m ordering the split foam roller, I had already bought a regular roller, so thanks for the save!!
if I paint the popcorn ceiling, can I still remove it in the future with the spray/moisture method?
Thank you!!!!!
Oooh sick tip re: the roller! Exactly what I was looking for as I had a feeling a regular one wouldn't do. Now to paint my nephew's bedroom black... x'D
Horrible 😮good luck trying to repaint his room after he's gone 😂
Had to be so careful on the popcorn. Too much paint from the roller and ..... popcorn would get soggy. Also used a wide brush with little paint and just skimmed the popcorn, would let it dry , and do the same thing again. Had to cross strokes for coverage . That worked--but man, what a job.
Ok, my ceiling is like little sunshines or flowers...can you use the regular roller for it?
I've never been a fan of the popcorn ceiling and I believe it just makes it that much easier to make a breeding ground for dust bunnies and cobwebs....but anyways...still liked this video to show support for the channel! 😇😎
Cheers jeffrey!
Does popcorn texture on a ceiling really help in dampening echo noise in a large room with a concrete floor?
Hello you said that you are not using acrylic, so are you using latex or oil paint?
How do you get all of this stuff done? I work a fairly standard 40 hours. And try to work nights and weekends on projects around the house. I'm just constantly tired (mentally and physically) and can't get enough done. Now with the cold (Wisconsin) and the dark I'm getting less done. I'm fairly young (31), in good shape, and handy.
How do people find time and energy to get stuff done?
If you ever figure it out please let me know 😩
You gotta have inspiration for a better future that pullis you forward. I listen to cool audiobooks of amazing people and think if they can do anything, I can too. Also help if you are curious about DIY or whatever you are doing. I also listen to motivational videos from YT and if that doesn't help, music that gets me pumped.
IMO the best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is with a water sprayer and a nice scraper.
😂
Hi. How to fix a popcorn ceiling that is too glossy? We painted a small part of our ceiling and it looks glossy. We have used the inceorrect paint I guess. Thank you
Personally I'd use a heavier nap, 3/4" or 1". Hold more paint, less dipping. Knock your edge off and back roll after a couple dips.
you are right
Friendly tip! Hey Jeff, I would make it much easier cutting up their quick using the Gooseneck paint brush on a pole. Walk around the room in 10 seconds. Eliminates going up and down a ladder. I prefer 20 mil. One full roller will only get a span of 1 x 6. Don't go over the same area or else it will peel off. Foam rollers clog up with stipple. Cheers! Don
Popcorn ceilings?? What years is it?!?! 😂
Just kidding haha. Always appreciate learning from you
😁
I would just want to get rid of a popcorn ceiling
I agree, however for folks who have asbestos this is still a very practical way to encapsulate and make the room fresh and clean. Cheers!
In certain older homes, even if your textured ceiling is asbestos free, the plaster of the day can now be rock hard, and very resistant to removal. Not everyone is willing or able to tackle such a texture removal.
@@Matthew_Lavers the idea is to get it wet enough where the popcorn comes off easily.
popcorn is not supposed to be rock hard.
Slap some drywall over it.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY not enough asbestos to matter. I did an asbestos sample once, and the report said there was only 2% asbestos in the popcorn.
Anyone who wets the popcorn enough can remove this crap pretty harmlessly
I got stomp ceiling and it very spiky… just fix little area but that new spot didn’t match the old color … now I need to repaint all to white just to match the new one … what can I do since it not smooth… search all the video there no video got that spike stomp like mine,.. :(
1st coat of primer?
Don't you have to seal the ceiling first with a oil primer first before using latex ?
only if you have stains. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY no not if it's fresh stucco it always needs a oil primer
I already painted by regular brush twice still haven’t feeling even ,,,,😢 and the colour looks different then my wall and no clear line between wall 😂😂😢😢what can I do next
I'm confused I want to paint my popcorn ceiling that has not ever been painted before can I use bher BEHR PREMIUM PLUS Interior Ceiling paint # 558. Home Depot said that I cant use it because the popcorn has never been painted before can you recommend a paint for me ?
Isn't popcorn ceiling bad for your health? Can you do a video removing popcorn ceiling?
How do you soundproof waste pipes
spray foam the pipe. Cheers!
I've read that people are putting shiplap to get rid of popcorn ceilings
👍👍
Wait, why are you using a roller pan?
That’s some Harry Homeowner stuff
I would like a tool that would magically transform my popcorn ceilings into non-popcorn ceilings.
It is called a drywall panel lift. laminate a new layer of drywall. Cheers!
How about getting rid of that texture? Just bought a house that has it and it drives me and my wife nuts.
spray it with a water sprayer, then scrape. Easier than painting this crap.
lots of youtube videos on this.
Or just scratch a line in the corner with a flathead screwdriver.
I got this stuff on walls.. paint it as soon as possible with washable paint.. if you don't it gets dirty easily, cleaning is a pain, and you damage the structure easily... Sadly i learned this by experience.
Don't try to roll a popcorn ceiling. Use a paint sprayer and you won't have any of those issues. Tape the edges of the walls off and hang plastic, so then you don't have to paint your walls afterwards.
That takes way too long have same or better results and faster with a roller and brush
How about spray ceiling and then the walls. Just cover the floor, would that work
1/2 inch is 12.5mm
Cheers!
Hello. Few people know about the stretch ceiling. I shoot training videos on installing a stretch ceiling. Come to the channel I will be glad to see.
Best way to paint a popcorn ceiling... Remove the popcorn ceiling.
How much poocorn falls??!
I used the foam roller on my ceiling along with the recommended paint for a textured ceiling, guess what the ceiling turned brown , the texture fell off the next day, solution , I had to remove all the texture , lucky for me the joints were well done so , I painted the ceiling and to hell with a textured ceiling , who ever came up with it should be in jail.
the ceiling is supossed to be primed before the texture goes on. in new construction no one did the priming.
