How to EASILY Remove Popcorn Ceilings and Paint Them White! DIY Start-to-Finish

- No one wants popcorn ceilings anymore, especially if they are 40 years old and yellowing with cob webs like mine were. Removing your popcorn ceilings and repainting them with a flat white finish is the best way to give your home a more modern (and valuable!) look.
NOTE: If your house was built in 1979 or before, test your popcorn ceilings for asbestos. Mine was built in 1983 so I did not need to demonstrate the steps for removing asbestos filled popcorn ceilings.

Took your advice and my husband and I de-popcorned the ENTIRE house in 8 hours!
wow thats insane!
Wife and I planning on doing the same thing to an entire house. Seeing a comment like this makes me optimistic!
How big is your house? Single story home? 2 story?
Everyone, please remember a very important step. After sanding, you absolutely must remove the lose dust that will be clinging to the ceiling. If you don't, when you go to roll, you can not just paint over it. The paint will not stick. I used a long handled broom. You will be able to tell when there is no more dust. I'm not sure if this guy just skipped that step, or forgot to tell us he did it. Thanks for sharing your hard work. If that Kilz worked without knocking the dust off, I'm all for it!👍
thank you! I just sanded mine and wasn’t sure if I needed to do anything else!!
@@haileybump6644 You're welcome! It's such a pain...all of it, but the dust that you pretty much can't see, is clinging on for dear life😂 Standing on the floor and with a very hard, quick motion of the long handled broom will take care of it. Go over the same spot like four times and you're good to go😊 And wear a hat and goggles😉
Yes Great tip!
Normal dust is nothing to be concerned with. It will just mix with the primer and not present any problem whatsoever. However, if it's a thick buildup of dust it needs to be removed.
Thanks for that reminder!
And to think I was gonna pay someone $1,500 to do this. I can do this myself! Thank for t the tips!
You definitely can do it yourself! You’re welcome sir
$1500!!! Dang, I was quoted for $4500!!
I was quoted 8,000 😢
😊 Thank you so much
Wow no kidding… I’m a contractor and I’m about to do one for 1k… about 350 Sq ft. Removal, prime, patch, spot prime and paint.
I was quoted 4000… I thought that was crazy
The only thing I would add to this is that once you are done scraping, you can get a small bucket of warm water and a rag or sponge and wash the areas that look like they would need sanding or skim coating and do it with a wet sanding mentality, just sanding with a wet rag. Chances are those areas will wash right off and be left with a smooth surface. I have learned from experience doing my entire house. Areas that have been painted over and where water will not penetrate easily, I have found that skim coating with joint compound the best option.
AN EXCELLENT SUGGESTION ABOUT USING A WET RAGE OR SPONGE TO CLEAN UP THE DUST. "THANK YOU".
I’m so sad this is your only home reno video!! You’re such a great teacher!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
One correction I'd like to make on this video: definitely do two coats of the flat white paint (or whatever your final coat's color is) to finish the job. It will provide the most professional and clean look for your new ceiling!
Great video. A 5 gallon bucket and grid are so much easier to work with. Also, to eliminate irregularities where wall meets ceiling, caulk it. The caulk reduces the irregularities(gap, texturing, etc) so you can “cut” a clean paint line between wall and ceiling. Saves time and looks a lot better.
This is great- I have to do this at our new home in AZ. It will require the entire house to be done. Got me motivated to face this monumental task! Thanks!
Was wondering how long you let the water soak in before you started scrapping? Thank you
@@michelleklym4874 5-10 minutes. Scrapes off super eazy. My ceiling wasn't as nice as his, I had to skim coat the entire thing with mud.
YOU DID A GREAT JOB MEN…. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT SUCH A GREAT PERSONALITY AND KNOWLEDGE.
Thank you ! 😄
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Great job! Satisfying and informative!
Thank you for the great step by step process. Very informative and helpful.
I saw a guy connect his scraper to the end of his shop vac hose so that the majority of the dirt and dust goes straight in the canister. It looked like a good idea.
Be sure to check for asbestos before you use a shop vac on this material.
Wow, this is the best video I’ve seen. Thank you for showing the entire process!
Great job Connor, very thorough!
Great detailed video. I've been considering doing it myself and after watching this informative video, I feel I can tackle it. Thank you
Great video, good balance of information and humor. Definitely helpful!
This is the video that I needed. Thank you!
very detailed advice...thank you...covered eveything from start to finish really well!
Great job
Thanks for a great video!!
Thanks!! Great tips
Great video! Thank you!
Thanks for the detailed tutorial! I'll be tackling this job over the weekend! Great tips!
you are welcome!!
Thank you. You are a great teacher.
Thanks for the video, I've watched so many video, since I try DIY to fix all my ceilings. yours is the best for an amateur like me.
THANK YOU!
Thank you so much! I can't wait to start on my room.
I'm new at DiY (+ friends) renovating
Appreciating your tips+ down to earth attitude!
well done, Lad
This was very helpful! Thanks 😊
You're welcome! 😁
Thank You so much for this video. So Grateful for you sharing. It looked great. My popcorn ceiling is very old and dirty. Keep up Great work young man. Thanks
thx :) you need more subscribers Ryan!
Thank you for showing this! Alot of videos show folks using skim coats after the removal (feels like so much work). It’s refreshing to see that you only prime and painted after sanding. I believe you’ve done this in multiple rooms? How is it holding up?
Helpful Thanks!
Thumbs up from GA!
I love the Puerto Rico Shirt!! Thanks for the video aswell!
its a beautiful place! and you are welcome!
Awesome video! Very helpful! I usually tint my primer the color of the paint I'm going to use - but now they sell paint with primer in it! I just painted some drywall (where I removed the popcorn) and only used 2 coats of a combo primer& paint and it looked great.
Thank you! I've been staring at the ceiling thinking I can do this - guess I'll get started this week!
Did you complete it?
:-))))))
Me too
If you put tape on where the wall meets the ceiling, it should keep your walls the same color
This is so helpful. Thanks...A Memphis gal.
Didn't think about using Kilz as primer first. Good call.
its the best!
thanks!
nice work. I have delayed doing mine because I did not know it is easier to remove by wetting it. I thought you could only sand it off. That can be messy. Thanks for sharing.
This shows me I’m going to definitely need to hire a contractor 😂🎉

It's so satisfying seeing the popcorn come off. I have popcorn ceilings throughout my whole house and have always hated them. Now I know how to get rid of them! Thanks for posting this!
Hello fellow Memphian! ❤❤❤
Amazing video man thanks! I’ve found that Kilz 2 works just as good and only $30 for 2 gal at Home Depot
Hey thanks. I removed the popcorn from the two bedrooms of my condo and was just about to cover it with joint compound (mud). If I can just paint the drywall ceiling with primer that makes things easier.
It's totally up to you, but my ceilings have been fine having just painted straight onto the drywall.
I’ve decided to keep my popcorn ceilings. They’ll be back in style and all the rage in 20 years. Of course, I’ll be dead. But still.
:-))))))
How do you do this if the popcorn wall is already painted??

Some times the popcorn 🍿 ceiling has been painted with vinyl silk waterproof the water 💧 want penatrate through so then you have to seal and plaster.
Hi great video! I scraped off my popcorn and sanded the ceiling. Can I apply a thick coat of primer instead of doing skim coat to get a smooth surface? If so what primer should I get?
Great result! How long did it take you to complete the project?
Thanks! I think it took about 3 separate days of work, but I also was filming at the same time. I can be done in one if you start early in the day.
new sub
Great video, very straight forward but detailed. Thanks. so how do you know if the popcorn has asbestos in it other than the date the house was built? and what if it does, then what?
You need to buy a test kit or hire a professional to test the popcorn. If it does contain asbestos, there is a special process for removing it. I don't know what that is since I haven't had to do it.
If the ceiling was done prior to 1990, best to assume it has asbestos. Manufacturing new asbestos construction products ended in the late 1970s, but companies were allowed to sell/use their existing inventory, which continued into the 1980s.
I think the replacement product was teeny bits of styrofoam coated in plaster/mud. (Not dirt mud; drywall mud.) so I suppose you could put on protective gear and try to CSI/autopsy a single popcorn 🤣. Or just look into when the ceiling went up.
I had to sponge off my walls before I could paint. That wet popcorn stuff was like smearing my living room with oatmeal. Tape high if you weren't planning to paint the walls.
he's cuuute.
Popcorn ceiling. hmm never heard of this before !!
My popcorn was harder to get off plus I had ruff spots where nailers were .
What about acoustic properties of the new ceiling? Did you notice a lot of echo in the room?
Hey Conor! Did you film the video using a DSLR? Quality is really top tier!
Yes I did! Canon R5. Thank you!
Where do you get popcorn tested for asbestos
Hi! Thanks for the video. We are buying a house with my partner and planning to do everything what we can by ourselves to save money. Our ceiling is popcorn and also has some gaps (in-between the concrete slabs), I’d say 9mm deep. Do you have some recommendations for us, ideally we want just a nice white smooth ceiling without popcorn and these seams?🙏🏻 Many thanks!
Maybe fill the gaps with drywall compound? It would take a few layers to smooth it out seamlessly, but that's probably your best option.
Great video!! Btw You’re Gorgeous☺️
This popcorn ceilings is an old style ? We bought the condo 12 years ago?
This is the absolute best case scenario.. as soon as the stucco has been painted ...good luck...i have tried 3 different formulas and 3 techniques...it is very difficult...good luck everyone
If your spray texture ceiling has been painted and will not accept water to make soft, the best option in MHO is to skim coat with joint compound. Will take two to three coats but you will get a nice smooth surface once done. The better technique at skim coating the less sanding and smoothing in the end. For a demo, just search youtube; lots of examples.
thanks we are getting there and will have to skim coat. It would be nice to hear that not every popcorn is simple like the demos in these videos. Connor should have mentioned that! I have contacted several contractors...most of which refuse to even quote on the work.....
"Real athletes run....other athletes just play games" A+
😅
How long did this take you
Hi- can you use this method to remove texture on the ceiling and walls? Not popcorn but texture.
if it's been painted over, probably not. you'll probably have to replace the drywall entirely.
Skimcoat it smooth. No need to replace!!!
Where can you get it tested for asbestos? If it’s has Asbestos who and how can you remove it.
What color is that on the walls? It’s beautiful
I have no idea, I painted over it haha
For real. Some one quoted me 3300 for my living room and kitchen. Then he was going to spray mud on it. This looks way easier
it's definitely cheaper!
Question: can u use a 2 in 1 paint with primer so u don't have to paint and prime separately?
since youll be painting bare drywall, i recommend a dedicated primer for at least the first coat
Our house is old, popcorn done in the 80s. BUT it has been painted a few times all over the whole house with a semi-gloss it looks like. 😢 will spraying with water even do anything to the popcorn? Appreciate your thoughts. Thank you for a great vid.
In my experience no 😮 you have to sand it smooth. I recommend a drywall sander. That's what we are doing
🎉🎉🎉
Is there an advantage to doing it this way vs using a sanding/popcorn ceiling removal machine to do it instead?
I don't think a drywall sander is going to work if your popcorn has been painted. Before accepting the fact that I had to scrape I tried the sander and even with 40 grit discs it just wasn't working.
Conor are you here in Memphis? I am in Memphis as well and maybe we can hook up so you can give me some suggestions.
What if it's been painted?
So there is no wait time between spraying and scrapping, is it right away ?? I tried mine and it's too hard
You have to really soak it, and you can wait 5-10 minutes for it to soften up the popcorn.
I have popcorn on a concrete ceiling …just covered my kitchen with bead broad.
Hi, I'm thinking of doing the hallways of a mid-rise apartment building. I would like to have a rough estimate of how long it would take before I contemplate doing it myself.
I have a few questions:
1) after spraying with water, how soon can you start scraping - 30 sec, 1 min, or longer?
2) how many sq ft was that room, and how long did it take you to scrap the whole ceiling (not counting the prep.)?
3) do you think it would be easier and faster if I make a high long platform to stand on so that the top of my head is almost touching the ceiling, so that I don't have to tilt my neck up, and hold the scraper in my hand without the extension pole in order to have better control of it and work faster?
Let the water sit for 15 minutes. That room looked like a 20x20 and it doesn’t take long to scrape. Sanding may be different depending on how well you scraped but shouldn’t take long with 150 paper. I use a ladder and stand high enough that I can comfortably reach the roof but don’t scrape above your head, it’ll be a mess on you
Always get acoustic ceilings or dry wall checked. 1979 rule doesn’t mean anything. The U.S. stopped manufacturing things with Asbestos, but they didn’t stop importing things with asbestos.
How well does this process work on painted popcorn? Probably doesn’t and mine is painted
It works. You have to use a lot of water but the paint should be permeable.
it's tougher for sure but it can be done. My bathroom had painted popcorn and i mixed some white vinegar into the water to help break down the paint.
I just did it on painted popcorn. It is a lot harder but doable.
@@Cherrypi393 took a lot of hours to remove and clean up then to fix defects and repaint right? My house is kind of big and has a ton of these popcorn ceilings. I feel like it’s going to be weeks and weeks of work to deal with. How long and how many sq feet was yours? Thanks
@@lh98I feel the same way
Add a quart is mixed mud to 1 gallon of primer for a smooth spray finish after sanding and prep. 0 lines visible. You're welcome.
I hit the tape at the edges of the wall and mangled the tape, and the popcorn gets in the corners and edges. I'm gonna have to put up molding.
I asked the guy at Home Depote about contractor grade. I figured "It's higher quality right?"
Nope. Contractors want to get the job done efficiently, so it's actually a lower grade
thanks for letting me know! It works well for ceilings since they aren't the focal point of rooms anyway
Why a pump sprayer instead of just a hose with a spray nozzle?
bc i cant run it into my house or hook up to my sinks
That echo is much better than the popcorn.
I also removed the carpet, which absorbs way more sound than an "acoustic ceiling"
I wonder if the ceiling paint didn’t peel off, because I would of thought he needed to add a thin layer of drywall mud on the ceiling, then sand it and then paint. Good video though. 👍🏼
I haven't had any peel off since I started painting last year
Dont you need to mud the ceiling before painting?
you don't have to. I haven't in my entire house
To have a better appearance yes
Skin coat ceiling would look much nicer
Puerto rico❤
Put your brushes in the refrigerator after putting them in a bag. They will still be fresh and ready to grab and use a year from now.
thanks for the tip!
Good job, but I would have still have done the second coat.
definitely doesn't hurt
My man casually using $45 in gaff.
You’re not wrong 😂
Don't expect this will work for everyone. Popcorn was also used to hide defects... you can take the popcorn off and realize your ceilings need tons of extra work to look passable, not just paint.
The comment I was looking for. This is what makes me nervous about doing it myself.
@karri2644
If you are considering doing this, then you should skim coat it instead. Plenty of videos that can show you how. It's cheaper easier and quicker
It’s called artex
Why NO mask/ safety glasses to protect from dust?
I did wear a mask? lol
Respirator, not paper mask.
