- Welcome to my series 'Top Five' where I countdown the top five of a particular topic in the Progressive Rock (and related) genre! These topics are selected by my wife, and the idea is that these are the top five that come immediately to mind, with very little preparation.
Today's topic is the top five artists in my fantasy prog band! Tell me down in the comments, did I forget your favorite? What would your top five list look like?
Since my wife chooses the topics each week, please leave any suggestions you might have for future top fives in the comments below as well!

Add Ian Anderson as the 6th member of that band, and I think you've got something quite amazing there.
Great list.
Solid list. Two would be on my own.
My fantasy band:
Vocals - Stefano Galifi (Museo Rosenbach)
Bass + Backing Vocals - John Wetton
Drums - Andy Ward
Keyboards - Mike Pinder
Guitarist 1 - Steve Hackett
Guitarist 2 - Steve Rothery
I love that you included Andy Ward!!!
Going to see CAMEL Live in the Netherlands this coming May!! My first time traveling abroad in nearly 60 years, and first time in Holland, and first (and probably only) time seeing CAMEL!!
All Star Prog band:
Vocals: Steve Walsh (Kansas)
Guitars: Martin Barre (Tull)
Bass: Greg Lake (ELP)
Drums: Barriemore Barlow (Tull)
Keyboards: Keith Emerson (ELP)
Oh I love this idea! I'd kill to see your fantasy band!!
For me?
Kevin Moore (ex-Dream Theater) on Keboards
Dominic Lapointe (ex-Beyond Creation) on Bass
Baard Kolstad (Leprous) on Drums
Guthrie Govan on Guitar
Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) on Vocals
That's a cool group right there!
Awesome selection. I’ve seen yes, Elp, Genesis, Renaissance and Rush.
Steve Hackett is great choice!
My top 5 would have to be:
1) Jon Anderson: lead vocals, harp
2) Steve Howe: steel guitar, acoustic and electric guitars, vachalia, pedal steel guitar, vocals
3) Chris Squire: bass guitar, fretless bass, 8-string bass, vocals
4) Rick Wakeman: piano, electric keyboards, church organ at St.
Martin's in Vevey, Polymoog synthesizer, choral arrangement on "Awaken"
5) Alan White: drums, percussion, tuned percussion
🤩🌟🪐🤣
Annie Haslam is my favorite singer.
Great picks!
I would have:
Vocals: Greg Lake (King Crimson, ELP)
Guitar: Steve Hackett (Genesis)
Bass: Chris Squire (Yes)
Keys: Peter Bardens (Camel)
Drums: Bill Bruford with Jaime Muir (King Crimson)
I absolutely love your show, and I have thought about this topic many times over the years. Ironically, you and I agree on many of the artists that would make up my ‘Fantasy Prog Band’, with a couple of minor alterations. Keeping in mind that my personal list is going strictly by my favorite musicians, and not who I think are necessarily ‘The Best’ at their given instruments of choice.
Like you, I love Renaissance and have continued to hold Annie Haslam as my favorite female lead vocalist of all time, however, for this particular “assignment” (if you will), I had to stick with my absolute favorites.
Guitarists: A tough call, to be sure. Making a choice between Hackett and Gilmour is like asking me which of my dearest friends is my absolute “Best Friend”, and that I could never answer. But in this case, after seeing him live 5 times now, I would have to go with Steve… even though Gilmour has long been my favorite guitarist. That’s a really tough one, indeed.
Drummers: Another difficult one, as it’s between Neil Peart and Bill Bruford. Both incredible in their own right, but as for my overall fun to watch and listen to, I have to go with Neil!!
Bassists: Hands down, Chris Squire!! No doubt in my mind. I’ve heard others that have blown me away, but not in the prog genre. No one can tough Chris. I left work and took the next day off when I heard that he passed.
Keyboards: Yet another tough call for most, but as much as I love, admire, and respect Keith, I have to go with my all-time favorite, Rick Wakeman. Since I was a kid (many years ago) I always wanted to be Rick. YES was my first introduction to true Prog, and Rick has been my #1 music idol (tied with David Gilmour) for my entire life. I have no choice but to “Stick with Rick”. I have to at least mention my other favorite keyboardist, Richard Wright. More a textural keyboardist vs virtuoso wizardry, but I love him just the same.
Front Man/Person: As stated at the beginning, Annie is my all-time favorite female lead vocalist, but of all the bands that I believe have amazing singers (in some cases they are the primary reason I love the band), I have to stick with my other life-long favorite, Jon Anderson. There are so many, picking is quite the chore, but for me, for all-time favorites, Jon takes that slot without question.
Being a lifelong Tull fanatic, I love your idea of Ian Anderson, but for the kind of music I can envision my lineup putting out, I don’t think Ian’s vocals would be as cohesive with their output as Anderson would. I considered Derek Shulman but rejected that idea for the same reason as Ian.
Personally, I love the idea of keeping both Hackett and Gilmour in the band, and letting David take on the role of primary lead vocalist, but that would oust Jon, and that can’t happen… in my mental music world.
So, there you have it: Anderson, Hackett, Squire, Peart, and Wakeman. Basically, YES with a different guitarist and drummer. Now that I reflect on it, it doesn’t really seem to work that well, but there it is. If I must only select a single member per band, then:
Shulman, Hackett, Squire, Peart, Emerson
Great choices, and really liked reading through your reasoning! We share many favorites!
Peart was great but hard to beat Phil Collins, Bill Bruford or Carl Palmer. It's a loaded category. I'm not even sure how I would pick amongst though. Front person for me would be Ian Anderson but aside from that you did a nice job with your picks. And for what it's worth I've seen ELP, Genesis, Yes, ELO and Jethro Tull in my days of concert going. I've also seen Kansas and although they are a bit different in their sound I'd still consider them a prog band. Honorable mention musicians overall have to mention Kerry Livgren-guitar, Phil Ehart drums, Mik Kaminsky violin, Hugh McDowell cello, and Martin Barre-guitar.
Annie Haslam
David Gilmour
Tony Banks
Chris Squire
Neil Peart
For drums I would either want Bill Bruford or early Genesis period Phil Collins. Both bought amazing forward thinking playing. Tony Banks for the Keyboards too. Much more than Emerson. Ian Anderson would have been good too.
Why mess with perfection? Anderson, Squire, Howe, Wakeman, Bruford; or Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Hackett, Collins. Sometimes reality is more fantastic than fantasy.
That is a fair point! Hard to argue with those classic line-ups. It really can't get any better than that.
@@NathanOnShuffle you start mixing and matching and it just doesn't work. Can you imagine Jon Anderson and Tony Banks? 🤣
@@michaelbenz8092 in reality you are right- still a fun thought experiment though 😁
I'm a classic prog rock fan, and your fantasy band is hard to beat. I'll just try to go with five different choices you didn't mention. Here goes:
Keyboards - Rick Wakeman (classically trained as well)
Bass - John Wetton (willing to experiment)
Drums - Bill Bruford (his drumming cuts through too)
Guitar - Steve Howe (the most talented)
Vocals - Greg Lake (a voice like royalty)
Also a great list! Can't go wrong with any configuration of these all-star musicians!
Looks like a wonderful band, great picks. Not a prog band but have you ever checked out 'The Best', maybe the the most unique 'supergroup ever. Keith Emerson keyboards, John Entwistle bass, Joe Walsh guitar, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter guitar, Simon Phillips drums and Rick Livingstone vocals. They toured Japan playing well known songs from their respective histories. Parts of their 1990 Yokohama concert are on youtube.
I have never heard of them! I'll have to look into that!
@@NathanOnShuffle Let me know what you think!
Great picks! Annie Haslam is a particularly inspired choice. My fantasy prog band probably wouldn't have sold out any stadiums, but I reckon they could have made some pretty interesting music...
Drums - Guy Evans (Van der Graaf Generator)
Bass - Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant)
Keyboards - Dave Stewart (Egg/Hatfield/National Health)
Guitar - Mike Oldfield
Vocals - Barbara Gaskin (Spirogyra/Hatfield/National Health)
Of course, you've already got a couple of multi-instrumentalists there, but if I could be cheeky and add a sixth member I'd totally sneak in Brian Gulland from Gryphon on bassoon and crumhorn as well!
Nice band. I haven't heard Renaissance yet but they're on my list to check out. My band:
Neal Morse: Lead Vocals, Guitar & Keyboard
John Petrucci: Guitar & Vocals
Tony Levin: Bass & Chapman Stick
Jordan Rudess: Keyboards
Mike Portnoy: Drums & Vocals
No basically LTE with Neal Morse, lol.
Agree with Chris Squire and Neil Peart ( RIP to both)but I'd substitute
Steve Walsh: vocals and keyboards
Roger Hodgson: vocals, keyboards, guitars
Kerry Livgren: guitars and keyboards
Honorable mention: Ian Anderson,,vocals, flute, acoustic guitar
Nathan, perhaps visit this topic again, for a six person band( for possibilities of saxophone, violin, flute)
