"The Legend of Hao Lan" based on the late Warring States period, revolves around the struggle between the Qin and Zhao states. It would eventually heal to a white or pinkish color, but it depends on your skin tone too. Avoiding sun damage and moisturizing it after the scan is gone is important .

There was a thing called branding in ancient era, it's not just coz it's a drama. Besides even now a lot of scars remain after healing unless they get some expensive procedures done to remove the scars, which most people don't bother to do.

My godchildren's mother got a similar cut across her cheekbone when her first husband left her. It is seen as a mark of shame, like the bearer is damaged goods, in their culture. I learned that in these C-dramas and K-dramas, when they say that an obviously pretty girl is now not pretty anymore, they are just referring to some marks on her face, including something as benign as pimples or freckles.
This was something in "Eternal Love" where the bad guy cursed the female lead to be ugly, and when you see her face, the pimples are barely noticeable, but she was now considered to be ugly.
It was a time when women depended on their beauty to survive. So any imperfection like pimples/ sunburn would be seen as ugly
This is set during ancient times. They don't have the medicine, make up, or plastic surgery we have now. The wound could get infected and get uglier. Better to disguise the scar with a tattoo before that happens.

The word ‘disfigured’ is too extreme and exaggerated and shouldnt be used for her situation. I know its in the ancient times but like its just a freaking scar. According to history HAO LAN though she became a empress dowager her character and morality was sh*t....she was the kept woman of Lu Buwei who later married the King Sun Yiren and had kids,but she still continued her affair with Lu buwei and later cheated with another male after Lu Buwei decided to stop his affair with her,she disguised the man as a Enunch by faking his castration and had 2 children with him in secret and later the kept man of HAO LAN tried to upsurp the throne with her help but was caught later by her own son(Ying Zheng) as she wanted to rebel against her own son for power and the truth of her character was found and the man was killed and she was detained in her palace.
The only good thing she did was to give birth to the first emperor of Qin Dynasty Ying Zheng who was also ashamed and traumatized by her acts and played a part in his tyrannical rule as it remained a stain on him.
When YingZheng ascended the throne, LuBuWei took a step back (he was happy that his son became emperor)...but HaoLan started to keep toyboy to satisfy her lust..gave birth to two illegitimate boys...YingZheng had the two kids smashed to death.
