That's exactly what I would have bought. Safe bets. All three. I love barbasol. It doesn't lube like soap. It's its own beast. I creates a lot of cushion. I never try to spot touch up with it, because it leaves almost no residual slickness. If I need a touch up, I reapply and go for a second pass. Great video, Dude.

The King C Gillette razor was a prize I won about two years ago and it quickly became one of my favourites.
I find it really quite encouraging that you can walk into a random pharmacy and get yourself a safety razor. It must surely only be a matter of time before you can get all the basic supplies at your local spot.
I just pray for the day that it happens over here in Thailand 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Ah, Barbasol, was my go to shave cream in a can for many many years on and off. Started using it because Consumer Reports really liked it way way back in the day, and I found it better then all the other canned stuff. But then, I tried soaps, creams, bowls/mugs and brushes. Therefore, I moved on but if I had to use a can for shaving cream, Barbasol is it. Thanks, Matt another nice one!

The King C Gillette razor was the first DE razor I ever purchased and introduced me to wet shaving after 43 years of cartridge use. It worked well enough to send me down the rabbit hole of collecting vintage razors and blades and buying and trying a bunch of soaps and brushes. I only shaved twice with it though because I quickly switched to other razors. I DID, however, like it enough to give it to my eldest son as his entree into the wet shaving world.

Not a bad shave! I love my King C, and it has a permanent spot in my rotation. Barbasol is my go-to travel cream. I usually keep one or two of those small travel sized cans in my Dopp kit. Soaps and brushes are almost nonexistent in American retail chains. I’d probably swap the Gillette gel for Aqua Velva… assuming Walgreens carries it. 👍🏼

Hello, great review. Used to shave with cartrige, about 3 mounths ago bought one of these. I liked the experience but after a month switched on the brand of blades, because would get a lot of irritated skin due to my beard being hard to cut. Now I am using the King C with BIC DE blades that at least to me seam much sharper with Proraso RED products and I am loving the experience, smooth cut on the first pass and second pass very good results.

Great video, after nearly a fifty year hiatus from wet shaving (I am an old guy), I once again started wet shaving about a year and half ago. The KCG was my second razor, it was great experience. Since then, I have become an avid wet-shaving hobbyist and have acquired a large number of vintage Gillette razors. This grizzled and wrinkled old face will never again be touched by a cartridge. The Razor Emporium videos are both educational and entertaining. RE's tune-up and revamp service is second to none.

I keep a can of Barbasol around for when I’m in a hurry or just not feeling the shave.
You can make it 10 times better by using a good preshave (Proraso white for me) and applying the foam with a very wet hand.

I just remember my father using barbasol and thinking “omg that’s such an outdated shaving cream, why doesn’t he use shave gel?” 😂 little did I know that as an adult I would then appreciate that barbasol scent-I wet shave now, of course, but have yet to purchase a barbasol scent homage. Still very interesting to see “barbasol” on RUclips after so many years have passed since I witnessed my father using it. I wish I could have appreciated then as I do now.

I like how others speak so lowly of this new Gillette double edge release. Especially since some, myself included, are quite impressed with h it’s performance. Modesty speaking, my collection of razors is smaller, and my highest priced razor is the feather asd-1 . But I do own many Gillette superspeeds, a shock injector, and a GEM. This Gillette king C has quickly taken the number 1 standing on my list and look forward to mornings.

The King C Gillette display has dwindled down to almost nothing here, shame. Too bad as I was hoping wet shaving would expand in the general retail market but it's not happening, maybe P&G, Harry's and Dollar Shave Club paid em' off. Thanks for the video though, well done. Outside of a Merkur 34c, the first items I started my wet shaving journey with (from Walgreens!) was the Vanderhagan soap (not the luxury one) and a Vanderhagan boar bristle brush. Well, 15 years later and I eventually settled on GFT Almond creme, 1955 Gillete Flare Tip Regular, and any old Alcohol based aftershave (Love Captains Choice but too expensive, now using Gabel's Lime or Bay Rum). Barbasol I never liked - the cream always had a "dry" feeling to me with no lubrication or protection - when I used a cartridge (15 to 25) I used Gillette Foamy. If I am in a rush today and need to use my cart, I use Proraso canned Sensitive.

I never tried the King C Gillette yet. But my first de razor was the Van Der Hagan 85mm razor. I used it with Barbasol sensitive skin shaving cream which was my go to when I used cartilage razors.
I used my Van Der Hagan the same way that I used my Gillette Fusion and I had a blood bath of a shave. I used entirely too much pressure! My chin and whole jaw line was covered in nicks and cuts. Took my two weeks to fully heal from that experience. But now when I used the Van Der Hagan razor as an experienced wet shaver I can say that it's one of the most mild feeling razors out there. Combined with an Astra or Gillette Platinum blade is shaves through anything pretty easily.

My first safety razor was the Wilkinson classic (plastic one). One shave and I was hooked. My first "real" one was the King C. With a real sharp blade it's a good choice for every day shaves. Your discussion & description of the tugging and the other included commentary is why I also do not like to use the Barbasol shaving foam from the aerosol can. There is a can in the bathroom cabinet right now, about 6 or 7 years old. What can be done with good effect is to add some Barbasol foam to a partially used bowl lather of a good shaving soap, and mix the foam in, using a brush; which I have tried recently with excellent results.

I wish you had found the Van Der Hagen 'Adjustable Safety Razor' for about the same price. I forget what major pharmacy or retailer was selling it. It's a rebranded Ming Shi 2000S (which is a Merkur Futur clone), but one can get it for less than half overseas, if one doesn't mind waiting about a month for delivery (and doesn't mind it's smooth handle). Of course, it's not as good as a Merkur Futur (or a Rex Ambassador), but it's very good for the price.

    • @borbetomagus

I just hope Gillette's two recent safety razors are some kind of teaser for a reissue of an adjustable razor, but since they describe their King C. Gillette safety razor as 'A single blade razor designed for edging sideburns and strong beard lines to help you achieve your perfect look', I don't have high hopes. It would also help if they came out with reissued (or revised) vintage Gillette designs, instead of rebranded designs....

Never. Going. To. Happen. I have first hand contact with them and it's not even remotely possible. Sorry to burst your bubble but the king c line is as close as you'll get and it's miles away from a Fatboy. Muhle makes this head and china makes the handle. Gillette doesn't have the machines, millions of dollars.of tooling or interest (most important) to abandon their cartridge system razors that are brining in 10,000 fold the profit that DE would bring.

      @borbetomagus 2 года назад

@@RazorEmporium I just wonder what Gillette executive thought hearkening back to their earlier, less profitable, days was a good idea... Excellent content as always. I want to point out, shaving creams contain alcohol(propylene glycol) that is how they soften beard rapidly where as shaving soaps contain oils that condition the skin.

Good shave! I have not used can shave cream for a long time. My dad always used soap and a brush even though he used a cartridge razor. I started off with a cartridge razor because I didn’t know there were options. I’ve always used soap and a brush for lather just recently started using a DE safety razor. Man the time I’ve wasted on cartridge razors.

For a quick shower shave I've found that Van der Hagen shave butter works as a preshave & works well enough with Gillette Foamy Sensitive shaving cream. Nivea has a decent aftershave balm as well.

I have used the King C Gillette and I think it shaves fine....is mild. I do use Barbasol when I need a quick shave. As for aftershave....I don't mind the Gillette gel.....but if Aqua Velva is available I would use that instead.
    I enjoy the videos....thanks!!

Just got myself a king c safety razer, jack the barber shaving cream and brush, and it’s a great shaving experience,at least compared to a cartridge, just goes to show that you don’t need fancy,I mean I’m sure more expensive stuff is a nicer shave, but for just $50 AUD it does the job more than adequately

Morning Matt. I have tried the King C Gillette razor right after they came out. I didn't care for the handle, so I switched to one of the Razor Emporium vintage looking handles. I agree that someone wanting to just start wet shaving can find this razor inexpensively at Walgreens for under $30 dollars. I shave with mine every now and again.
Nice shave and a good example for newbies wanting to try wet shaving. Also, there are several good entry level razors available at Razor Emporium.
Take care and be safe over this holiday weekend.

A good video that might interest a cartridge shaver to try DE shaving without spending a lot. I have Barbasol in my shaving den. I use it when I'm in a hurry and want a decent shave without the cleanup. Barbasol works good enough for that.

I would go with the same setup but I used Barbasol back in the '90s when I first started shaving as a teen and it was my father's shaving cream since the '60s what I would do different is the Gillette cool water after shave.

I keep a can of Barbasol around for a quick shave but I have to add a good amount of water to it or it just feels like a dry paste sitting on my face. I keep the King C. as part of my rotation and I have good memories of the Gillette gel so I think you did good!

I have used the King, those blades are really good. Barbasol is OK'ish when I need something quick, if you do not shake the can, the product comes out a bit runny: better than the foam. Finally that balm is OK.

I enjoy the Gillette aftershave gel because it smells good, soothes my skin and the scent doesn't interfere with my balm or cologne. Of course, the King C razor is wonderful and Barbasol will get the job done.

I actually did buy the King C. Gillette razor from Walgreens a little over a year ago, but I don't really care for it, probably because of the handle. I used Barbasol for a number of years, but once you get use to a good bowl lather any shave cream just doesn't hack it. It's too bad Barbasol dropped their aftershave as it was great, and I still have one and a half bottles.

lol I have been using that same Barbasol for cartridge shaving for years because it was what my grandfather had, once he passed years ago I switched to it for the memories. I am in the DE rabbit hole after being tired of the cost of cartridges. Didn''t realize this world existed and I am 40yo. The KCG Razor was the gateway, on my second week and trying to upgrade the experience. Didn't like how slippery the Gillette Razor was so I picked up the Goodfellas Syntesi Velvet, still had tugging so maybe my inexperience.
That said, I ordered up some proper shave soap, a t3 brush and an alum block for my next shave along with Astra and Personna blades. Figure it is a good investment, will save tons in the long run. Once I get dialed in and experienced, I may have to pick up one of these nice looking Razors from brands like Timeless, Rex or Blackland. So good looking.

I really am curious to try a classic like barbasol. I have never had a DE but I got a brush and believe it or not shaving gel is so much better with a brush. I know that probably sounds crazy. And I also tried the after shave you have there. Wasn’t a huge fan. It seemed a little aggressive for sensitive skin. I wanna try that DE specifically

I tried the nivea one which gets mentioned a lot more often in wet shaving forums, but I remember not liking it as much. I haven't tried too many aftershaves but I honestly don't see a reason to try other ones when I found one that works, is cheap and is so readily available.

I always used edge shave gel. I think it is a Gillette product, maybe not. I just bought more of it as I am comparing it to various soaps. I feel that with soap I have to reapply because the slickness is gone after 1 pass. The edge gel has something in it that continues to lubricate after several passes. Still experimenting though. Will update you after your next big box store video.
