- Pat Carroll, a comedic television mainstay for decades, and Emmy-winner for “Caesar’s Hour” would come to be known and loved by millions by her voice thanks to Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” which came out in 1989. She was not the first choice of directors Ron Clements and John Musker or the musical team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who reportedly wanted Joan Collins or Bea Arthur to voice the sea witch. Elaine Stritch was even cast originally before Carroll got to audition. And her throaty rendition of “Poor Unfortunate Souls” would make her one of Disney’s most memorable villains.
Carroll would often say that Ursula was one of her favorite roles. She said she saw her as an “Ex-Shakespearean actress who now sold cars.”
“She’s a mean old thing! I think people are fascinated by mean characters,” Carroll said in an interview. “There’s a fatal kind of distraction about the horrible mean characters of the world because we don’t meet too many of them in real life. So when we have a chance, theatrically, to see one and this one, she’s a biggie, it’s kind of fascinating for us.”
She got the chance to reprise the role in several “Little Mermaid” sequels, spinoffs and even theme park rides.”

This really makes you appreciate the wonder and beauty of 2D animation... Also, RIP Pat Carroll.
💯 Hand drawn animation is such a beautiful art medium.
I cried myself to sleep when I heard she passed away. I curled up in a ball and let loose. She was my favorite, may she forever rest in peace :(
@@ToucanPlayIt Aww rest in peace 💜🐙
rest in peace ursula we will miss you your poor unfortunate souls😢
Indeed.
Something about this version is dark and makes it much better than the actual cartoon. It’s really amazing. The little mermaid is a masterpiece and I wish they kept this original version
Agreed
That’s why movies shouldn’t have deleted scenes
I love when Ariel peers into Ursula'a lair and in this version it's just seaweed hanging from the ceiling and super dark
@@lochlanimationsnah theres a fuck ton of scenes that get deleted for the right reasons
Perosnally i loved the mid section of poor unfortunate souls before it hits the reprise
I recall another deleted song that was lore heavy.
There was a verse in 'Fathoms Below' that revealed Ursula as being Tritons own sister
(which would've made Ariel Ursula's Niece, and as such their interactions would be much more personal.)
Indeed. Basically the basis for the Broadway show.
@My achilles heel I mean it is possible that triton turned her into a octopus after figuring out that she planned to take over the sea
The fact Ursula & Triton are siblings is still valid, but it's good to know that there was going to be the extended version
I think the live-action is going to expand on Triton and Ursula’s story, and keep Ursula evil while giving her more background..
@@LovedLovingLia According to the old story boards was actually mutated by practicing black magic.
Theory that you probably knew and isnt interesting:
Ursula was preparing the spell to turn ariel into a human from the start of the song because she already knew that ariel would accept from the start.
Hadn’t heard that. But obviously that’s what’s happening. The whole second half she’s concocting the spell and Ariel doesn’t sign until the end
Well yeah, because if you watch the original movie you can see her eels spying on Ariel. They relay everything back to Ursula and that’s how she knew she’d be an easy target.
The last part where the pace picks up truly is overwhelming that you can understand Ariel's being forced to sign. It's what someone pointed out that somehow lacked in the remake. They slowed Poor Unfortunate Souls down a bit.
I love how the guy who “Wants to get the girl” originally had glasses ❤
1990s Disney was peak Disney. We had all of these amazing films plus the Disney afternoon. I hope one day Disney gets back to this style. RIP Pat Carroll and Alan Menken.
HOWARD ASHMAN is who made that era what it was!
I miss hand drawn animations. I know it’s not really worth it. The time and money spent making it isn’t worth it but man, does it look gorgeous. I hope Disney makes a hand drawn animated movie. They have the money to do it, please Disney 🙏😭
Hand drawn animation is actually much cheaper to produce than 3D, and by extension is easier to turn a profit with. It's just that 2D movies tend to also make less than 3D movies, and rather than look at any nuance, the execs just see that 3D=more $$$$
Does anyone else like the parts where Ursula spins around? Despite being a paper drawing, she looks solid, almost three-dimensional.
Thats actually a principal of animation! The whole point is to make these characters look like 3D beings despite the 2D medium.
what principle did you refer to exactly?
@@roivinikmossel2998Most likely Solid Drawing.
They should start hiring talent again and not because of connections. Put talent first. This movie is classic!
What a legend. RIP Pat Caroll, you will be missed 😔
I think Disney could do an extended version with all of this material that they have here. It's basically the whole scene in its entirety. With today's technology, it could be done.
Maybe in the new movie…?
@@jaz8582not really but there was a bit more past told in the new one by ursula.
Ursula looks even more like Divine in some of these drawings.
It's really interesting to see how things could have been - I'm glad they cut the starting monolgue. Not only did it not seem natural but it also changed Ariel's motivation from wanting to be human to wanting Eric - also makes her seem dumb rather than naiive in trusting Ursula.
I'm glad I get to see this but I like the final product better, where Ariel doesn't really know much about Ursula (just like the audience.)
The final product handles Ursula's first impressions towards Ariel very well.
First, we see Ursula's environment; dark and unsettling.
Ursula's first beckoning makes her seem intimidating.
Then, she lightens up the mood, jokes, and offers a solution, making her seem kinda "nice and friendly".
Finally, the contract has been signed. Ursula does her magic and laughs maniacally, showing her true frightening nature.
Agree 100%! While her back story is interesting, in this version, Ariel just knows too much about her to make this believable. It doesn't work. Ariel's naive, sure, but not "You tried to overthrow my father, but I'll trust you with this huge life changing thing where you might own me by the end of this because you said your nice now" naive. It works much better if Ursula is more of a mysterious, unknown entity to Ariel.
I think they should make a complete DVD released of Disney's The Little Mermaid Series from the 90's to honour the memories of Pat Carroll who was the voice of Ursula.
8:26 LOL After seeing this movie two dozen times, at least, and being able to play each scene in my head as they are in the movie, I can definitely say I was _not_ expecting that. Made me guffaw. I'm so glad they decided to go with a more graceful, elegant emergence from the sea.
Its an epic moment in the movie. Im glad they decided to go with the hair flip too XD.
R.I.H. Ms. Carroll you forunate talented soul
Nice play on words
tehy should have kept this def gives Ursula a backstory.
They kept some semblance of it in the Broadway show but yes agreed. It helps build the character out. They should’ve use this is the foundation for that book series that was written not that off-the-wall story featuring cats lol
@@StoryMemories86 It makes Ariel just seem stupid, rather than naive in this scene, though. They could have kept it in, but not in her song.
I love how hoe this animation is a a psychological thriller dark and like a dream just love it.
RIP Mrs. Carroll. You will be missed v_v
This is one of the times I agree with the decision to cut out that middle part of the song. Much of it was redundant.
ehh, i always wanted more of this amazing song lol
Long Live the Sea Witch!!!!
This song will always be iconic ❤❤ Ursula is the best villain ever
I cant believe howard ashman allowed them to cut that section of the song. He was very protective of his songs.
Ariel shouldn't worry to much, she is sixteen and cant legally sign a contract. Ursula sells used cars most of the time, she is always employee of the month.
this movie is a masterpiece 🙏🏻🙏🏻
If only i had the chance for her to be my vocal teacher
This was probably when The Little Mermaid was still in production, but they started to hold auditions for voice actors.
How Ariel didn’t get the bends from surfacing so fast?
The world may never know
Magic
I'm guessing the spell protected her until she made it to the surface. Ursula needed Ariel alive or her plan wouldn't have worked.
The fact that at Ariel's time, Ursula's words would even be considered very realistic XD "Men up there don't like a lot of blabber, they think a woman who talks is a bore" and I'm pretty sure many were of that opinion, so aunty Urs was really just telling the truth 😂😅
Come on I know you need a little magic and magic is my specialty du jour
Don't stand there looking sick
Would I kid you play a trick like I told you I don't do that anymore
So I think you ought to take my little bargain
Yes I think you ought to make my little deal
Sure it's hard to live your life
But you could be the prince's wife
Why don't you let me take that dream and make it real
Thank you, I was looking for this
5:11
"Come on, I know you need a little magic,
And magic is my specialty _du jour_ ;
Don't just stand there looking sick--
Would I kid you, play a trick?
Like I told you, I don't do that anymore!"
*OH NO?!!*
Did I miss something? Ursula didn’t say anything about her relationship with Triton, just that she had been banished from the palace, which is in the film? There was no middle verse explaining her past as the director indicated.....
I remember a special edition of The Little Mermaid with another deleted scene, where the sailors of Eric’s ship told each other a legend/song about Ursula, the banished sister of King Triton who wanted to take over the throne. Maybe the director was referring to that but it was cut with a different deleted scene that didn’t touch on that part of Ursula’s backstory.
Yeah, not sure what the dude at the start was talking about
@@nkbujvytcygvujno6006yeah, in the deleted version of Fathoms below, Ursula is Triton’s Sis. Sure the director was referring to that instead
"Attempted usurper" is a kind of relationship, isn't it?
Ursula said she was ambitious and tried to advance her station (or something like that) and Ariel said she tried to overthrow her father. And Ursula said something like people were exaggerating or making too big a deal of it. Seems pretty clear to me?
the expression is amazing
So Triton turned Ursula into a half- octopus as punishment?
No Ursula was always like that. She's a different species from the merpeople. In the sequel, it's revealed she has a sister named Morgana and she's also half octopus.
Sounds like at one point when they were developing the story for the original movie that was one possibility. Someone else said they also considered it as something that happened as a result of her practicing black magic. Sounds like in the sequel they went a different direction. 🤔
Ursula’s species is called Cecaelia
I love this version.
Poor unfortunate seal is my favorite song in the movie
Wow thankyou for showing us XD so nostalgic❤🧜🏻♀️
In the love action the cut out a part of the song, they should have replaced it with this one!
An icon uwu
Always will be one of my favorites as i am a ocean lover me and Ursula are a lot alike because I also have the desire to rule the ocean
The music kinda sounds like it’s from an MS-DOS game. Not that I’m complaining, I actually like that vibe.
we want that!
Me gusta mucho la canción 🎀🍦😃👑
Deleted Scene Poor Unfortunate Souls Alternate Song Version i am so scared of Ariel's voice gets taken
I wonder what Elaine stritch’s version was like
i'm glad they took out the part at the start. having so much about Ursula contextualized like that would make Ariel look really dumb signing with her lol
The Ursula in the new movie is amateur compared to Pat Carroll
Five minutes in - that’s why “The Little Mermaid” isn’t my favorite Disney movie. Ariel just isn’t that bright. I get that she has to take Ursula’s deal to move the story forward, but she’s not very bright. And I think she’s ungrateful toward her own family-she’d gladly betray them and ditch them to be with a human who is handsome but is a total stranger to her.
… and yet here we are ;)
“Teenagers, they think they know everything.” - Sebastian
I agree 👍🏻 that's why I hope the live action does something to make Ariel not that dumb...
So.... She's a teenager?
That isn’t very fair. Ariel wanted to leave the ocean way before she met Eric. She literally sings part of your world before she even sees Eric.
Early song
❤
This is better than that Monstrosity they’re bringing to theatres
It was really good so no not a monstrosity.
@@daredevilking1797 ok ok I did see it and I did enjoy it. Halle Bailey is not Ariel but she is a little mermaid
:)
I know that the 2D animation looks cool sometimes and they do spend a lot of time and effort, but I'm sorry, I hate these 2D designs for Little Mermaid. Like, why is the underage mermaid drawn to be "sexy" and everything, like, make her look more modest and more like a normal teen instead of trying to make her appeal to guys. And why does the villain look so... UGLY!? Like, this is what I really hate most about these older Disney movies, these stereotypes. The only 2D Disney movies I really like are Mulan and Aristocats because they don't overdo it with stereotypes
oh what I can tell you with Mulan is how racist and stereotypical the mangolians are in the movie. so feck Mulan off that list
You really have to appreciate the work of the artists who made the 2D animation for this movie. So smooth and flowing to the amazing voice work of Pat Carrol (RIP). I always find the part where Ursula says “your voice” to be really terrifying. I’m kinda sad they didn’t include this In the movie it would have been amazing and it would have added deeper depth to Ursulas character. One thing I love about the classic 2D animated Disney films is that during the villains song they are actually telling you their plan. The best example of this is Friends on the other side. Xx
This scene was so creepy when she enters the cave. They totally missed the vibe in the live action. Ursula was much more evil and fantasically so.
ursula"s laugh is so iconic pat carroll gave her life wow
Good portions to remove. Ursula waving it in Ariel's face that she's evil, attempted to overthrow her family, etc. makes Ariel look really stupid for taking the deal.
She kinda already was her song makes it clear that Ursula is an infamous trickster who shouldn’t be trusted also there was nothing in her deal that would prevent Ursula from sabotaging Ariel’s deadline if I were Ariel I think it would be pretty clear Ursula has invested interest in making the daughter of king Triton her property!
the fact that she says the word "Divine" right at the beginning
Pat will always will be our favorite badass Disney sea queen 👑 rip queen 👑 pat
You can tell the new version referenced some of this deleted material in there scene with Melissa!
2D animation is so wonderful!
I love the parts that were cut! I understand why they were cut due to time constraints but the extra little verse before the “subject of payment” is just as amazing as the others. This song is one of the greatest musical theatre numbers ever written!
Pat Carroll was brilliant.
goodbye selfishness hello secrets
I'd watch the entire movie like this, i really love this concept and early aesthetic 😍
1:51-1:54 is it me or did Ursula just strutted her big hips?
Yes :) she is DIVINE of course ;)
@@StoryMemories86 that adds to her sex appeal which is good
