Hi Irena, I was in Jamaica last month and I had no problem at all. My daughter and I spent 4 days in Montego Bay and 3 days in Negril, and we had a great time. At no time were we in danger or fearful of anything or anyone. We had a rental car and we went to different parts of Jamaica and never once had any problems. I can’t wait to get back there. Thanks so much for the update on the travel advisory. And thanks for the great things you are doing for Jamaica and Jamaicans all over the world. We appreciate you.

We spent 5 weeks in Jamaica this past February. I had a fall and required medical treatment for a laceration. We are Canadians and have relatively low-cost medical care in Canada provided to us. I noticed no discernable difference for the medical care provided in Jamaica except the emergency service was considerably quicker (no wait) in Jamaica (Negril) than in Canada! It was expensive in Negril, fortunately we had travel medical insurance.

Thanks to all the African Vloggers (Dee Mwango, African Tigress, Miss Trudy and Wode Maya) who visited Jamaica despite the American travel advisories. Thank you to all the other foreign visitors such as Po'Jo the Backpacker and Bless Up Jess who visited Jamaica and ignoring the travel advisory. It's odd that a violent country like America is advising their citizens about Jamaica despite all the shootings which occur in American cities.

No That's not what it is!!. It has to do with Jamaica NOT agreeing with the US Government/Biden Administration on accepting a Gay Man who is Married to a Man and they wanted to Place him in Jamaica to work at the Embassy as the New US Ambassador to Jamaica.! (Am not very sure of the position)!! BUT The Prime Minister of Jamaica said No we will tolerate this kind of Behavior in our Country. We JAMAICANS do not accept this kind of Relationship. And now the US seeks to play Sabotage on our Country and its People. So they are putting out Negative information about Jamaica such as these Travel Advisory. And as I write this comment TODAY 8-4-24 they are even doing it at the Olympics! Several Athletes Ran their Race in Track n Field and Won the 100m and we were all shocked when the judges change something and gave the Win to Lyles. No wonder Shelly and Sherika dropped out of the womens 100m. They are once again punishing Jamaicans aboard for something our Government and the people of our Country don't believe in.

The US and UK's travel advisory for Jamaica, has been one of my biggest gripes, these past couple of months. Yes there are problems with crime, etc, but is Jamaica's crime rate higher than the mass shootings in the US or the daily stabbing death's here in the UK ... I wonder. Thank you for this update, Irina.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  Месяц назад +4

Jamaica's homicide rate is higher than in the US/UK, however, this is because of HOW homicide rate is calculated, not because there is more crime happening in Jamaica.
      1. For example, deaths that occur from gang related crime are counted in Jamaica towards "homicides count" , in fact this is the majority of all homicides. In the US deaths from similar crime would not be counted towards homicides, they would go into a separate category (organized crime, terrorism etc).
      2. Also, rates of crime/shooting doesn't translate into whether the place is safer or more dangerous. Because in Jamaica crime is often gang related, people who are not involved in gangs and who have no relatives involved are generally safe. Whereas in the US/UK stubbing/shooting is often random and the goals of such attacks are drastically different, which means anyone is at the risk of being a victim.
      3. More importantly, nobody ever checks US crime rate for "aggravated assaults". It's over 200 (compared to rate 5.0 for homicides in the US and around 40 for homicides in Jamaica). This means that the number of attacks in the USA actually happen more often than in Jamaica in 5 times! (the rate for aggravated assaults in Jamaica is around 38). Basically, because most of these attacks in the US happen in big cities near hospitals - people often survive these attacks, but how does this make US safer than Jamaica? -- "You'll be stubbed/shot, but don't worry, you'll survive!" - this is what I get when they brag about how low their homicide rate compared to Jamaica.

At least there is some change, I believe they did see your video. But the change is not far enough for me, and since their health care system pretty much murdered my sister and almost murdered my new born grand niece while Jamaica's health care system kept my Mom alive and did a fabulous job delivering my twin grand niece and nephew with absolutely no complications. I can say they are right don't expect the same health care in the US as you would get in Jamaica. I am not being unrealistic, Jamaica's system is not perfect but it's not what goes in the US though.

It is always refreshing whenever you upload content. Your critique will have those individuals paying attention to the topic become more accurate. Of course Jamaica is and will always be a 3rd world country, because it was never a participant of the cold war between the US and USSR. The term "3rd world" comes from the division into 1st word countries (those against USSR), 2nd world (those pro-USSR) and 3rd world (those who are neutral). And the irony is that you're saying "Jamaica won't come up to the times", while you yourself are stuck in the 1960s-1990s with these "cold war" terms and a way of thinking.

Hi Irena. Love all your shows which are very informative. Have a question: is it true they've found oil off the coast of Jamaica? I wanted to know if you could explore this and give us a programme on this. If they have, what would this mean for the island in terms of energy prices. The environmental impact to the south coast and the island in general. Would Jamaica quickly turn into a Dubai, devoid of any natural beauty and over crowded? Would be a very interesting programme. 🙂

Small business in Jamaica are expensive. The drivers in Jamaica are extremely expensive. They want $300 to go from Montego Bay to Kingston Jamaica, one way.. that’s ridiculous

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  Месяц назад +4

Yes, it's ridiculous, the driver should be charging at least 350 USD or more. If the driver is charging 300, he's only earning around 9.50 USD per hour, which is a very low rate, especially when compared to how much US drivers earn.
      Here are the details:
It is 105 miles (170 km) between Montego Bay and Kingston.
First, what are the rates for a taxi service in the USA to cover the same distance? According to taxi-calculator, it's 2.18 USD per km, so it would be 370 USD if you were take the same trip in the USA, even though the fuel is very cheap in the USA compared to how much fuel costs in Jamaica.
Now back to the trip in Jamaica, here are the costs:
      - 80 USD = fuel required for this trip (note, the driver will need to come back with no passengers)
      - 60 USD = toll fee for this trip
So, it costs 140 USD just for fuel and toll.
Then the expenses of owning a van itself. It costs 60,000 USD to buy it, so this is the base loan that the driver has to pay + interest. OR he has to pay the owner of the van at least 40% of whatever he earns after fuel/toll. So, out of 300 USD that you pay to the driver, this is what he gets:
      300 - 140 (fuel+toll) - 64 (to the owner/loan) = 96 USD.
He also needs to include the costs of licenses, public liability insurance to transfer passengers and the costs of maintenance into his price. It comes to the total around 400 USD per month (20 work days), so about 20 USD per day. So, for this trip additional 20 USD is cut for this, the driver is left with 76 USD.
Considering the trip from Montego Bay to Kingston and back is at least 8 hours in total from the moment he leaves home and comes back and he's charging 300 USD, he earns 76/8 = 9.5 USD per hour.
The reason I know all this is because I was thinking of offering cheap transportation services, but when I did my maths and calculated the expenses I realized that 300 USD would not be enough to make this work.
If you don't like private driver prices, you can always take Knutsford Express from Montego Bay to Kingston, it's about 32 USD per person one way. I hope this helps.

Jamaican living in Jamaica and I was not angry at the travel ban. Yes walking on the road is not a death sentence but living here the corruption is out of control. Police officers are overly aggressive and treat common citizen like shit. My experience and a lot of others I know personally. Our public healthcare system is a shame and I would hate to ever have to go to the hospital for myself. apart from love on visits or assisting my sickly grandmother. I truly understand why ppl are running from Jamaica. Job opportunities is limited and the jobs you do get pay shit pay even with your degree. Idc how this is received because there’s no lie in it. I pray and keep sourcing a way off with whatever youth I have left. Yes as a tourist I’m sure you’ll be fine but to live here without serious money 😵‍💫

Actually, Canada has its Travel Advisory for the USA, it's at Level 1 "Take normal security precautions", but it has a lot of warnings about crime in the US, listing gun violence, terrorism etc, also special warning about the border with Mexico:
      travel.gc.ca/destinations/united-states
New Zealand places US at level 2 with "Exercise increased caution" and extensive warnings about crime, www.safetravel.govt.nz/united-states-america
UK doesn't have a "level" system for its travel advisories, but it has a travel warning for the USA due to crime and terrorism:
      www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa/safety-and-security
So, yes, there are travel advisories that warn people about the USA, though people don't usually read them.

good question. This does happen sometimes, but very rare. In most cases American citizens who get attacked are actually Jamaicans with US citizenship who are involved in some illegal activities here in Jamaica and in the US. Their names sometimes given out in the local media, but in most cases - the victims are protected (to protect their family members), so the information of "who and where" is not open to the public.

I'm from Ukraine, but I lived in England for 6 years before. I came to Jamaica 10 years ago with my Ukrainian husband and our 2 Ukrainian children. We chose Jamaica because it is statistically one of the best places in the world to live. I did research, checked ALL countries and applied the criteria I had - Jamaica came right at the top of the list. At that time I hadn't known anything about Jamaica and never visited, but I trusted my research and was right. For more information, you can check the video on my channel that explains how that happened. @@mryardiedescendant yes, Ukraine is far worse than Jamaica right now, but that's not the reason why I came to Jamaica 10 years ago. Jamaica is my 10th country where I live - before that I lived in 9 other countries, including the UK and USA. I never planned to stay in Jamaica for so long - the plan was to stay for 1 year and then move to Costa Rica. However, I just fell in love with Jamaica, not just the island itself, but more so the people here - very sincere, straightforward, genuine, fun. This is so opposite to north/east Europe, where people are often gloomy and reserved, not because they are bad people, but it's just a cultural thing.

And just know I don’t mean to disparage the Ukrainian people or have a struggle Olympics of who has it worse; I really do pray and hope things change for the better in your home country. But we as humans tend to be short sighted and can’t see things from another POV. I’ve read so many articles in the Gleaner of Haitians swimming to the shores of Jamaica looking for refuge and safety because of the current crisis gripping the island right now.
We’re all similar in so many ways, yet different. We all want different things out of life and that influences a lot of the things we do and migration is no different. I’m glad you can call Jamaica home and have integrated yourself well with the locals! As always, keep up the great work!
