"...for every five men, two were buried alive under their shelter, two were injured to some extent, and the fifth is waiting..." - French Captain describing the battle of Verdun
Moody GhannaM it was on a video about the battle of Verdun, unfortunately I can't quite remember the name but that was a quote a French commander (or soldier?) Used to describe the effects of the artillery
Moody GhannaM Yeah definitely. Describes the reality of war. Either buried alive under your own post (which is disturbing) or injured badly, or waiting for one of those to happen to you. I think the video was here: ruclips.net/video/EdihcCMAuE8/видео.html At 2:23
The battle of verdun was literally the closest thing we ever got to hell on earth. The sheer amount of killing and destruction on such a small area of land is impossible to conceptualise. When you listen to this, just try to imagine what the unfortune souls on both sides had to endure on the western front in 1916.
I've been reading a lot about WW1, and feel it should be a crime to gloss over it as they do in school. These people went through atrocities that would make today's military soil their pants. People talk shit about the French and how they always surrender, but never truly know of the resolve and desperation and shear courage they had holding their positions. I have nothing but admiration and respect for them, and though I am a retired infantryman and see them as my brothers, I am unworthy of even cleaning the pedestal on which they stand. Ils n'ont pas passe
My great uncle was at Verdun. French 99th Infantry regiment. I have his dogtag, military ID booklets, letters, and his coin pouch which was struck by shrapnel. Truly was hell on earth.
The bit that comes after is encouraging, especially in Operations! it's like "doesnt matter if we lost, pick yourselves up men, we have two more waves ahead of us"
2:21 "In late june, literally dying of thirst, the French were forced to surrender fort Vaux to the Germans. Immediately the French struck back and took the fortress, but with devastating losses on both sides. While the battlefield was not even a square 10 kilometers, 700000 were now dead, wounded or missing. This was the longest battle of world war I."
We were on the operations on Verdun Heights. Last enemy battalion had pushed us to the very last checkpoint, with only 200 infantry remaining. I was playing as a medic and so many people were dying that it made no sense for me to switch from the syringe back to my primary, people were instantly killed, and because it was the last checkpoint, using my shovel was just as good as using the rifle. Among gas, fire, bullets, i've revived people constantly.. They kept coming, and eventually they brought their flamethrowers and trench raiders with'em. But we held the line. After 10 minutes i had a little over 100 heals, in such a small portion of the map, filled with so much destruction. The song looping through those 10 minutes really pumped the adrenaline, and for a breif second when my camera rose up above the battlefield i thought the game crashed, but when I heard the music I realised that we held the line, prevented the German offensive in Verdun, and had saved countless lives.
I've had two or tree games like this on operations before as a french medic, some of the most fun shit I've ever done in any game, it's so damn intense
2:12 "With this great victory, the city of Verdun is saved and the Republic of France salutes you. Though we have suffered great losses, you have turned the tide of this terrible war. Your courage and strength will never be forgotten."
I remember when I first played this map this song came on when I was rushing the French spawn as a German. The whole song played for about 4 minutes and the 3rd part of this song played for a minute. Everyone was screaming from being caught on fire and people were dying with bullets flying past our heads. Definitely my favorite map.
After an initial breakthrough, the Germans took the massive fort Douaumont. This advance would soon come to a halt, as the French poured men and resources into the area, determined to defend Verdun at all costs. And as the Germans approached fort Vaux, the outcome was far from certain.
Despite the combat not necessarily being accurate to World War 1, this Operation easily puts you in the shoes of the people who fought here. It's the most hellish and intense Operation in the game by far.
I like how Battlefield 1 is the most historically in-accurate WW1 game and it is the best WW1 game. Even with French soldiers with Federov Avtomats make this game beyond immersive. The only other game that tops it is Hell Let Loose.
@@Htchhgjhhchc45 I agree. And also probably the best World War 1 game overall. I like that the game tells me what battle I'm fighting in, what and who exactly I'm fighting for, and what might happen if the battle went differently as well as what actually happened.

Right now, this is the theme for the Battle of Bakhmut in Ukraine, and there are several factors that support this. In comparison, the french had to surrender Fort de Vaux after being too tired and had no more ammo. -Bakhmut and Verdun can be considered as the closest things to hell if we look the destruction through the soldiers' eyes in the front. -There are thousands of craters and holes everywhere due to the artillery shells that fell over the place. -Both locations will be considered as unhanitable for generations. I know many people consider the battle of Bakhmut more like Stalingrad's battle, but I first thought of Verdun when comparing facts.
Did you go to school? I don't think so because this level of silliness is more appropriate for a 2 year old. First during World War I, the French had one of the best armies in the world, and stopped the German attack before the breakthrough of 1918, which would have entered Berlin without the armistice. Second, during World War II the French fought for months on the Maginot Line before an insurgency broke out in the French state, crippling the country. Then it was the French who arrested Erwin Rommel in Africa with General Leclerc's tanks. Half of the US Army in WWII was made up of French regiments rearming themselves, so the French won, in part. And the country was not completely invaded, look at a map of the time, there was the State of Vichy if you want to cultivate yourself.
