As a former vendor, I really appreciate your attitude towards farmer's markets, and buying locally. Life would have been really tough for my husband and myself if we couldn't sell our sourdough rye bread (baked in an outdoor oven), cakes, tarts, bedding plants, alongside the vegetable and flower growers at our market. We made contacts to be able to sell eggs & meat privately. We had a waiting list for our pork and sausages, turkeys, rabbits, etc. Long, hard days, no weekend break. Just the two of us, working our backsides off. We kept our prices as low as we could, and figured that by having a variety of products, we would do better in our small community than by having a lot of just one product. I'm glad that you are able to harvest something from your garden.

What little clouds of sweetness your two little companions! We do a little bit the same for your monthly purchases from local producers. I have always thought that behind everything we consume there are people and families who produce it for us and it is their only source of income. Also, even in the big city where we live and with our small budget, we share it between several shops to make live as many people as possible, (this also includes the 3 bakeries where we buy bread, each a different day of the week). It’s not much of a gesture, but it’s part of our consumer ethic and I’ve convinced my husband and kids to do that. Start by supporting small everyday causes before big ones. You can do both when you are frugal too.

This weekend in British Columbia, Canada, we had our Ugly Potato Day. A local family farm allows anyone to go in and get ugly produce for free. This year, they had peppers and chocolates as well. Last year they gave away 40,000 pounds of potatoes, 20,000 pounds of carrots, 5000 pounds of squash and 2000 pounds of beets. It's to prevent the ugly stuff that grocery stores dont want from going to the landfill.

I went to my local market in Hayle, Cornwall today. A very small market but it had a fish stall, a meat stall, a veg stall, a cheese stall, a bakery stall, a crochet and knitted items stall and a plant stall - quiye a lot for a small town and very well supported. Local farms and fishermen, and crafters all of them!

Flowers only on our beans too at the moment. The tomatoes are green and hard but they’re on their way. The last few days of sunshine will have helped. We are lucky enough to have Jersey Royals growing in the field next to us along with a very well stocked honesty box! Suffice to say Royals featured heavily in our meal planning the past few months . We’re into the late crop now but they’re still delicious! 😋 😋😋

When we very first moved here our neighbour had a rather broad bichon called Betty. I remember my husband's little grandson arranging the shells and pebbles he had collected at the beach that day on Betty's back as if it were a table, which she tolerated very good-naturedly!
Markets can be such a pleasure in a way no other shopping is, and somehow, if bought carefully especially from the original producers rather than the resellers, the taste and nourishment from the food always seems concentrated! As such it's great to keep it as a special treat, and enjoy it appropriately, and of course it's a very community-minded thing to do too.

Love your pups! We support a local farm too and get great deals on fresh produce. I have a small garden & grow what I can in a limited area. In the fall, we get butternut squash & other fall squash by the bushel basket. We bake it and put it in some freezer bags to eat throughout the winter. It's a win for both of us. I've saved seeds and use them for the next season. It feels good to help out the farmers. I like to know where my food is coming from.

It's because they lose a bigger percentage of the crop as they can't protect it from insects, caterpillars or natural diseases such as blight. They also have a lesser yield as they can't use synthetic fertilizers.

Hi Jane and Mike. Looked a lovely day for browsing around the market. Yes it's a shame about the prices. My local butcher is the same. Unfortunately for them, due to the likes of Aldi and Liddl they are being outpriced. Some lovely produce you have there and no plastic packaging in sight. No doubt you'll enjoy it all.
So, what a pair of little loves Dolly and Mary are. ❤️ I bet you cuddle them to bits. I would. 😆 Can see they have a good home. They look so content. The house opposite me have a Bichon cross named Teddy, who often sits in the window on guard. He's so funny. Thank you for taking us to your lovely market. 🤗

Thank you for the lovely thrifty trip to Huelgoat, Brittany, France. It was much cheaper than going myself and I didn't have to pack a bag. Thank you also for explaining that a courgette is a zucchini or small summer squash. I thought they were cucumbers. Silly me.
If you want to try the beet/chard/collard/kale greens here's one way to cook them which you might like. Wash thoroughly, strip the leafy parts from the stocky stems and chop both the stems and leaves roughly. Boil them until the stems are tender or put them in a crock pot with a whole peeled onion, a whole peeled garlic clove or four, and three to four sliced celery sticks. When done, you can fry some bacon or ham or salt port in some olive oil then add the drained greens (you can save the water from cooking for veg stock) and sautee. Add Cajun style trinity (just bell peppers at this point) and cayenne, salt, pepper. Serve hot with or without cornbread and other protein sides.
Our local farmer's market in St. Paul, MN, USA is only local vendors and they cannot sell anything that they didn't grow or make themselves. No imports.

We go between the local roadside stands to truly support our community. We are very lucky to have numerous Amish farmers in our area as well as an organic farm. There are a few others that are smaller farms but using commercial seed, and chemical products, so after learning that, we support those that don't. We did farmers markets year round as side jobs to help make ends meet. So we understand that labor, as well as hope for an income. We have a smaller selection that we grow now. And with a wrist injury from weeding the garden is on it's own. I will pick what I find, but otherwise it will be what it is. I will get what I can locally and support their efforts 😊.
