If Blackwater while an amazing episode could of been a lot more action packed with a better budget. At this rate I'm just hoping we get an animated reboot for the seried more book based but also incorporating elements from the show. That way budget wouldn't really be an issue and the story could have the proper time it deserves. Also A Song of Ice and Fire as a whole just screams with visual potential.

There are many characters who could or should have had POV chapters, but two that definitely should NEVER have them are Petyr and Varys. Those two are the greatest schemers in the series, and it would reveal far too much to see the way their heads work -- in fact, I'd argue that it wouldn't even be possible to accurately portray how their heads work with just a chapter. They analyse and plot so much in such a short period of time, and if you could fit that into a chapter, it would ruin the mystery of them and the awe of their vast intelligence and knowledge to have it laid bare.

What bothers me is how neither appear to think or care about Jon's ancestry (I'm saying based on the show, didn't get to buy the books in english yet).
I mean, Ned stark appears with a baby and says it's his bastard. People don't even seem to question that he is his bastard even though honorable Ned should be more prone to lie than to dishonor his wife.
It's just this thing that really bothers me, principally considering the fact that he was rescuing his sister which, according to what people though that happened, was raped. It's just like everyone is so prone to dishonor that they just dismiss Ned lying completely.

And while it's out of character for Ned to have a bastard, it's not impossible. A young man In the stress of a war to avenge his father and brother visiting a whorehouse isn't even unlikely.
Mostly though it's that Jon looks so much like a stark, he takes so much after his mother (and by extension uncle) that people assume he has to be neds.
People also still subscribe to the lyanna was kidnapped theory, why would Ned raise a rape baby that started a war?

Sometimes it’s for the best that the most interesting characters don’t have POV chapters, and instead we observe them through others. For me, the most interesting characters are Stannis, Tywin, Baelish and Varys. None of them are POV, and that’s a good thing. It’s more mysterious and interesting that we view Stannis through the eyes of Davos and Jon, we view Baelish through the eyes of Sansa etc. It keeps us guessing and makes for a better story

Varys at least could benefit from a POV. Littlefinger is a bit less ambiguous but Varys seems to just be doing stuff to be doing it. Like I only knew Kevan was gonna die since it was the epilogue, and having it be Varys was a nice surprise, but still a bit random. And I know what they're setting up but a bit more light on the subject would've made his death a bit more impactful, I feel

Robb had many downfalls that led to his demise, not just one. Him breaking his vow, his foolish mother, and his compassion for his enemy. Grrm shows the consequence of following your heart instead of your head. And both Robb and Cat were guilty of this. In most shows and movies, somehow following your heart magically usually works out. I personally doubt R+L=J though. too much emphasis on his stark looks, combined with emphasis that targs all look a certain way but starks don't (ie targ blood is dominant but stark isn't), and too much reference to the seed is strong. plus the plan makes no sense in a realistic world so i doubt GRRM would make it. If/when he finnishes the main story, and feels like doing more, I'd be fine with a spinn off book focusing on Robb's perspective off it all just as a bonus story. Called the young wolf or something. In fact I'd be pretty hyped with some spinn off smaller books dealing with the perspective of interesting characters that didn't get povs in the original books. But only after the main story is finnished. So that book (those books) would not need to surprise us, as they would simply be adding to an already known story and simply fleshing out some bits that where not before.

I do believe making Robb a viewpoint character would of been an even greater punch in the gut when he passes in The Red Wedding.
We would of saw the eyes of a boy who was made into a king. Therefore, we would of saw all his doubts and insecurities, maybe a growth in confidence throughout his reign. We would of saw his ups and downs and his reasons on why he made the decisions that he did. Then we would see that boy be killed through the eyes of his mother and the reader would truly feel that pain because we connected with him throughout his story.
One of my main criticisms of the book.

I think there are some characters you just can't have as POV characters because having their view would ruin all the scheming, mysteries and cliffhangers. Not having a POV chapter doesn't make the character any less important. Imagine if we had a major Frey as a POV character that would have ruined their turning on Robb. Or if we had a Robb as POV character that would have ruined the surprising plan to lure the Lannisters to the west (which Edmure ruined). I could go on but you get the point.

I actually appreciate the fact that GRRM is willing to admit his uncertainty or insecurity about whether or not he made the right choices at certain points, and that he is happy to admit that, given a second chance, there are things he would or at least might consider changing about his books to try and improve them. To me, when a writer is asked, "Looking back, is there anything you would change about this story?" and their answer is 'no', I find that really disappointing. I consider that line of thought to be tantamount to admitting that they have peaked as a writer, and that they even now, years later with all the wisdom and experience and hindsight that they have gained since they made that story, that they still could not hope to top what they did many years ago. And I think that's sad; even if it might be true in some (or many) writers' cases, I would like to think that most great writers at least consider themselves to be in a constant state of learning, and getting better at what they do. Just flat out admitting that your best work is behind you is awfully pessimistic.
And mind you, that is a generous and optimistic view on that position. Such thinking could easily be misinterpreted as arrogance, thinking that what they did was basically perfect, and that changing anything could only ruin it, which is stupid to even consider. But I'm sure some people really do think that way, and frankly I couldn't care less how many credentials and awards they have, every work can be improved.

Martin uses the laws of attraction while writing about charcters who are only seen from another characters perspective. The Tyrell's and Robb Stark are more interesting because of the mystery around them. All we see is good acts from a 3rd person perspective. It's easier to romanticise a person when you don't really know them and that makes them more appealing as a result because you use your imagination to fill in the blanks. They can seem like great people, but you don't really know them. You just know what you're told through other people or in this case, characters in a book.
Robb was a good person from the viewpoint of his mother but he made countless mistakes and it was ultimately his bad decisions that got his entire army slaughtered. That doesn't make him a bad person, but he was heavily flawed due to his young age. His decision to marry outside of the Frey family was breaking an oath, not a good way to form an alliance when you're a newly crowned king. It showed that his word was useless. His second big mistake was mistrust in his mother, who let Jamie escape and it resulted in him executing Lord Karstark who was rightfully in a rage over Cat's betrayal. I guess you could even say Cat played a huge role in their downfall.
None of this excuses the Frey's and Boltons betrayal at the wedding, but Robb was a young idiot with an overly protective and paranoid mother.
The Tyrell's do a lot of a good things for the common folk but it's only an intelligent strategy to gain support and win the crown. It can't be more obvious. Lol they started with Renly, not Joff. They are opportunist. Had Renly lived, they would have attacked and killed the same people they fed when they came to kings landing. It was all situational.

I wish he did give Robb some POV chapters. For a pretty important player, he's more mentioned than he is seen.

Rob is on this story, but we do grant him the rank of viewpoing character.

Given how enormously Benjen's disappearance weighted on the Night's Watch in the first books, and specially on Jon and the Old Bear, I do wish we had been able to know him longer than we did. As the book series stands now, we don't really share the feeling of loss that the characters did.

I like the minor viewpoint characters, as long as it's not done too often. e.g. I was invested in the Dorne plotline because of Arys. I also like those greater scope moments when you realise a plotline's not really about who you thought it was about. So in that case, we start with Arys' viewpoint in what's clearly Arianne's story, then switch to Arianne's viewpoint in what we realise is actually Doran's story.

i think having a dothraki view point character would be cool as hell. depending on when they were introduced that would mean early on we have more pov chapters in Essos rather than just Dany
