All I can say to this video is, Tommy. You must be higher then a kite if you think an FJ priced in the $70-80,000+ price range is going to sell hundreds of thousands of units when something like the 392 jeep and Bronco Raptor produce maybe 2-3000 units a year and don’t even sell all of them and now like Andre said, they all have 10%+ off of MSRP and they still aren’t selling💀 The market at that price is very niche. If they want to sell that many they need to be realistic about pricing and price it at $45,000-59,000 for a top trim. (If they actually bring it back)
To be fair, Tommy said $60-65k, which unfortunately is pretty inline with the competition and also makes sense based on the price of the current Land Cruiser. They’d probably sell hundreds of thousands over the model life, but I can’t see that per year.
Toyota should have already done this 5 years ago when people like myself were basically begging Toyota to come out with a Wrangler/Bronco competitor! The price needs to be in the $30-40k range and NO MORE.
👎 dude isn't very realistic. Guess he's rolling in big bucks and thinks everyone else is too. Outside of youtube world, I don't see many $85k + vehicles tearing up the trails... at least not in the PNW.
Why do you poor folks make such long comments over something you'll never buy? I mean you have a lot of spare time to make this trope; but you really should look for a job , then you could buy what you want instead of griping all day. God bless.
Let me just stop you right there. If Toyota is looking at this as a $70k-$80k vehicle then don't bother. There's a reason Jeep can't sell what they have. It's the price. If they want to make a lot of money, then quantity is the way to go. Sell more of them, not for more.
There’s absolutely no part of current Toyota engineering that makes me confident that they will make an affordable and reliable platform that the masses will want, and that won’t be in the garage having the body and frame separated to deal with “teething issues.”
Definitely wouldn't spend 80k on something like this. And you know Dealerships have YET to learn their lesson on markups.. which is still hurting the market
So many reasons these won't see production, not the least of which is that Toyota can't move the truck products they've got out now. I was at the dealership yesterday getting the wife's 4Runner serviced, and every new Tacoma on the lot had "$4000 Rebate" painted on the windshield. Even then, the prices were stupid. I think I saw a Tundra on the lot with a similar discount. Aside from the early adopters who have to be first regardless of cost, people aren't buying these things
@@Fiftyfiv3hundr3d Tacomas have been built in Mexico since 2004ish, the new crappy drivetrains with all their issues in both tacomas and tundras are made in Alabama so nope he did not spell nothing wrong..
As someone who has an aging FJ, this looks like a worthy successor, as long as its not a stupid EV. As far as pricing is concerned - I bought my FJ brand new in 2008 for... $23k with a bunch of options including the silly navigation system.
All these new unaffordable trucks are making the old ones so expensive. The wages we make haven’t increased even somewhat proportionally to inflation and then all the EPA and safety regulations loopholes car companies need to jump through. We want the $20k cheap Toyota truck.
Looks like a cool SEMA build, but of course that’s all it is. I’m sure they’ll use it to try and generate buzz over a new product but all this is, is a cool one-off.
I mean, most of us don't want to spend luxury car prices on offroaders, the whole point of something that goes off road is cheap. Like get Suzuki's Jimny here in North America, or Mitsubishi's Triton pickup here (especially if they want to be relevant in 2024, and not slowly going out of business).
Using the roughly $28k (new) price of my 2012 FJC, adjusting for inflation brings that to about $39k. Now, I understand there’s much more tech in modern vehicles, so maybe $5k-$7k added on top to cover. That puts us right around a decent $45 base price. No reason to be higher, except greed. Just my 2¢
Tech is cheap. A tablet computer can be purchased for $100-400 dollars. The big screens in new vehicles cost maybe $50. The tech isn't costing the manufacturers 5-10k more than just a few years ago. Over the years, better and faster computers with bigger screens become cheaper. Bigger, better, thinner and sharper TVs become cheaper. Microwave ovens, cordless tools, music players, cameras, smart phones, tablet computers, voice controlled table top assistants, doorbell cameras, diagnostic tools and imaging, scientific testing instruments, remote control drones.....all get more powerful and cheaper to produce. Mass produced technology keeps advancing and getting cheaper. It's not adding to the cost of new vehicles. The vehicle companies are just adding higher numbers to the MSRPs.
I drove an FJ for 17 years ('07-'24) and am currently in an LCLC. The TNGA-F platform is a direct descendant of the FJ, with improvements The 2.4 turbo/hybrid exceeds my needs in terms of performance If I want herky jerky noisy power I get all I want from my '94-1/2 powerstroke. Toyota is pushing technology just like all manufacturers, that's what it takes to move forward. I have zero regrets on my 2024 Land Cruiser purchase from a technical point of view. I'm sure the new FJ and Stout will follow suit in the Toyota tradition of quality standards.
IMO it’s all marketing to generate buzz for existing vehicles. 4Runner is one of their bread and butter vehicles and that was delayed.. not to mention the big L on Tundra engine replacements. Toyota should prioritize quality in every segment before expanding further into niche vehicles.
It's absolutely hilarious 😂😅 The base price will be around $60k but we all know they don't make base models the ones that will hit the lot if they make it you're looking at $80,000 Plus
I LOVED the FJ Cruiser, almost bought one several times! But… the lack of surrounding terrain visibility scared the tar out of me, as did the HUGE blind spots on both sides. From the looks of that short windowed prototype pictures, they still haven’t improved off-road visibility. 😢
Even if they make it they won’t sell no one wants a 4cylinder turbo or even their piece of crap v6 twin turbo and it will be overpriced. No one is buying the current Toyota truck line up for this reason. Toyota needs to get their heads out of their assess they’re turning into a giant clown show
The only thing I disagree on is the price point and it seems others do as well. Creeping prices for the features avaliable is what's killing Dodge/Ram/Jeep. Don't want to see the same happen with Toyota. The prices you're talking about would have been "ok" three years ago when the money was free flowing but not now that cost of living has increased so aggressively.
I had a 2008 Fj Cruiser trail teams in white. Longest kept vehicle ive had until I had wrecked. Make ICE and NOT Hybrid and sure, ill buy one once again.
I don't care about a removable roof tbh, maybe it's where I live but that seems like a huge pain to actually use, and so rarely something I'd have time and conditions to use What I care about is: - a shorter wheelbase/more compact offroader with good angles and manoeuvrability - still body on frame and 4wd - optional lockers would be nice - as efficient on gas as possible, i know some people get their identity from spending money on gas, but i have better uses for my money.
Really nice to see these kinds of more focused variants. Yes, would pay a modest premium over LC 250. I'm curious to see if Toyota's upcoming new gen 4 cyl (400hp + hybrid?) would make it under the hood.
This is Summer 2026, minimum. Jeep and Ford aren't selling those $80k+ vehicles. Those vehicles are sitting on lots for months at a time This can sell in the $70-80k range, but that's about the top of the market, as Jeep and Ford have proven
I love the idea, I hope that Toyota starts down the FJ path. But I look at this concept and all I can think about is how my Bronco already scratches all of those itches and it’s a 2 door.
80k is crazy!! -- This seems more compatible to a Ford Bronco Sasquatch which is like 55K. Unless they gave us a non hybrid engine that had more power....there is no way I would pay more than a equally equipped Bronco.
I definitely will buy the 4Runner version if Toyota produces it. The Land Cruiser is cool but it looks like it needs larger tires… fingers crossed for the open top.
Toyota needs to price it UNDER the Jeep models. Yes, it is arguably a better vehicle, but Jeep is pricing themselves out of the market. Off-roaders are NOT begging for higher-priced options, we want reasonable priced options with proper offroad capability. I won't ever buy an $80K vehicle to take offroad, period - and I am not alone.
All Toyota had to do after the introduction of the new, smaller Land cruiser is give the 4Runner some type of removable roof. I feel like this is just a tease.
Yes but how many of those $80,000+ Ford Broncos are actually being sold today? All over this country you can step on a Ford Dealership and see multiple Bronco's just sitting there for months on end not being sold.
Waiting for a hybrid AWD Stout and if they’re not going to give us a baby Land Cruiser Jimny competitor, then please style the next gen RAV4 to look like a smaller Land Cruiser.
The FJ concept would look a lot better with round headlights. There are several 4-door Toyota FJ rendering concepts. They should have turned it into reality.
As much as people are complaining in the comments, I do think people would buy them. What id be nervous about is it becoming like the previous FJ where it’s extremely popular in the used market more than it was new. If they did this though, we’d really start to see the decline of Jeep. Bronco and a Toyota competitor? Jeep has shown theyre not investing into Jeep like they should be. Just my two cents.
If toyota made a 2 door fj with a removable top id be all for it. I dont need a 4 door and i really dont want to get a wrangler with all of jeep's quality issues. I wouldnt want to spend 80k on one though.
If it was a legit FJ cruiser, It should be priced just under the new 4runner. It should be stripped down from what the 4R offers. Just a basic open air 4x4. I would certainly buy one at this price point. If $60-80K, no way.
I'm pretty sure the midgate wouldn't make it to a production model (if they planned on building it) because GM owns the patent for the midgate, maybe they can do the pass-through like the Subaru Baja had, but that's exactly what either the new-gen Land Cruiser or 4Runner should have been or look like
Yes Toyota, hurry up and build this! The sooner you sell it the sooner I'll be able to afford a15 year old one with 175k miles, 3 owners and 2 accidents.
Realistically, production costs rise... but also fall at times (think past 4yrs), but greed will only let price rise. Just because other manufacturers like Ford are doing it doesn't mean they should. Considering many auto manufacturers have went out of business in the past 20 years following others isn't always so wise.
It would have to have cheap plastic version like the old one just modern ... one like the thumbnail render would look amazing, hard top removable and soft tops
Wranglers and Bronco's are not moving at current price structure now. Another flavor of the same is daft at the same price point. There are only SO many folks that can afford a 70k+ vehicle. Maybe chase the rest of the market. Of course, I am sure in the Board rooms mind they have done so with tons of Soccer Mom and minivan Dad themes SUv's. I don't know, maybe folks need to start thinking about upscaling a UTv and not another oversized bloated mini truck/bronco/JLU. Granted, I like my bloated wrangler, but it is 20 percent bigger than it needs to be. Give me the looks and give me the performance at a smaller cost and size. Most of the SUv market is moms and dad's grocery getters alt minivans. Theres nothing wrong with that, but its not the same thing. First one to market that bridges what a wrangler, bronco, fj bring to the table with some legit capability aimed at the under 50 crowd, you will sell a bazillion of them. Because lets face it. Wranglers and bronco are priced at midlife crisis pricing. Or you emptied the nest and suddenly have more time and money. Thats dumb. Like when I am at the dealership everyone that has a newish wrangler is way over 40. Myself included. For a lifestyle vehicle, this STUPID. IF Toyota goes for this same market and price structure, forget it.
This vehicle is going to be close to a $100000. After dealer ship markups, and I don't trust a Turbo 4 cylinder hybrid system to go through 3 feet of water. It's cool to look at, but it's going to be too pricy to maintain if you do legitimate off roading
Huh? Why would they need an FJ when the 4Runner and Land Cruiser are already redundantly filling that niche? If they want to offer it very bare-bones with a solid front axle, however, they'll eat the Wrangler's lunch.
Manufactures are sounding the alarms right now and can't sell their 80k vehicles they got. Toyota has been a very conservative manufacturer I doubt this will get green lighted to production in this economy there is not much of a margin to miss these days when your replacing thousands of engines. They need to focus on getting tow hooks on the Tundra lol
These manufacturers are high. Let the enthusiasts buy them new for 70k - 100k, then wait a couple years and buy them used. We need some sense to come back into the 4x4 / truck market. Someone needs to make a 25k suv Tommy, this is out of control.
The problem is prices can’t go too much lower given how everything from raw materials to labor prices have gone up recently (not to mention OEMs not wanting to extend their supply chain inventory in the event another dramatic shift occurs).
@@fortheloveofnoise where did you source that stat from? No doubt some niche brands or top end models might hover quite high, but from what I’ve seen most average profit per vehicle stats show at most 5-10%. “Most major automakers make a profit of 3-10% per vehicle. In 2023, only two companies made more than 12% profit per unit sold. Ferrari is considered one of the most profitable car manufacturers, making around five times more in operating profit per vehicle than the next most profitable manufacturer.”
If this small vehicle with its big parts sells between $60 and $80K, I will just look at it as a museum piece. It’s obvious that Toyota is hot for more funds and they know Americans love eye candies. Bottom bottom line, this “baited hook” concept is another fishing act in the eyes for Toyotas line of Truck/SUVs, but this fish is keeping its mouth shut!
I think companies dont really.appreciate, that necessities cost more for people, and without makijg more money, that will be their priority over overpriced liabilites that come with all sorts of other associated costs that have also gone up (or will if the vehiclesl costs more). Even people who can technically buy something a bit more expensive but are not rich, like myself, may just hold onto their vehicles a lot longer or just go without entirely or in part per household due to remote work. Going 3 years with one vehicle now in our household, and just have no incentive as the cost/benefit just isnt there anymore for newer vehicles.
I can't say that I've been very enthused about Toyota's direction lately. They've been bumping up the prices and reliability seems to be going down at the same time. Also not a fan of their electrification efforts. I'm probably going to be holding off on Toyota for the time being.
Toyota has plenty of CUVs and SUVs, not to mention the other competitive offerings. While the market is sizable, there isn’t room for another 100,000+ unit / year, $60,000 vehicle without cannibalizing sales of other Toyota offerings. Surely, the market is saturated with vehicles that the average consumer can’t afford. You can see evidence of that just by getting into your car and driving to the local dealers in the vicinity of your studio. 20%-25% of consumer auto loans are upside down, repossessions are high, interest rates are high, and credit is tight. Inflation and the above factors are putting new lifestyle vehicles out of reach for middle class earners. As excited as Tommy may be, there just isn’t any runway left in the market for another pricey offering. Ford and Jeep have plenty of 2024 Broncos and Wranglers in inventory in search of a new home and not enough incentives to make them move. The banks and buyers aren’t lining up to take on more consumer debt.
Toyotas forgotten about the KISS method. We don’t want all this technology standard. I’m tired of screens on my dash cause it’s cheaper to make and complicated engines that have to be squeezed to make power when their old motors wouldn’t skip a beat. It’s a shame the markets shove all of this down our throats and that standards have killed the car industry. The pre-2010 development of vehicles was peak. Toyota is not the same brand.

I had an 84 4Runner with convertible top.
$80-$85k…you’re nuts!! 👎🏻👎🏻
Unless it’s got a v-8! 😅
Realistically!, only worth $60k
Realistically, production costs rise... but also fall at times (think past 4yrs), but greed will only let price rise. Just because other manufacturers like Ford are doing it doesn't mean they should. Considering many auto manufacturers have went out of business in the past 20 years following others isn't always so wise.
Ill just keep my 79 HJ45, and 88 FJ62 and cant forget my little Dodge Raider.
This makes me think the Pontiac Aztec would be well received today
Price is key. If they over price it, it won’t sell big numbers. They need to undercut Jeep and Bronco.
Love this! ROX 🤞
A 2 door would be cool. Gonna take a lot to beat what ford did with the bronco
If it had the 3.4TT, worth it at 60-70k MAYBE. If its the 4-popper with or without hybrid, itll sit on dealer lots
I wonder what would've happened if they kept the V6 and V8 and just added a 9 speed trans, (natural asperated for Tacoma and same 5.7 V8)
Toyota needs to keep the price below the Land Cruiser and GX 550.
Reminds me of the Hummer HX concept years ago
They really missed out on making those! Swear! Those were insanely cool!
Hopefully, it will not have the terrible sight lines of the FJ Cruiser.
These manufacturers are high. Let the enthusiasts buy them new for 70k - 100k, then wait a couple years and buy them used. We need some sense to come back into the 4x4 / truck market. Someone needs to make a 25k suv Tommy, this is out of control.
I hope so, I really miss my FJ. As other users have commented already I sure hope it's made in Japan so we can avoid all that murican quality.
I think the Fortuner is the next update
If manufacturers would lower their prices then they could start a price war and get sales back on track with the people.
The problem is prices can’t go too much lower given how everything from raw materials to labor prices have gone up recently (not to mention OEMs not wanting to extend their supply chain inventory in the event another dramatic shift occurs).
@@ALMX5DPsome OEMs are making over 300% profit per car....just saying
@@fortheloveofnoise where did you source that stat from? No doubt some niche brands or top end models might hover quite high, but from what I’ve seen most average profit per vehicle stats show at most 5-10%.
“Most major automakers make a profit of 3-10% per vehicle. In 2023, only two companies made more than 12% profit per unit sold. Ferrari is considered one of the most profitable car manufacturers, making around five times more in operating profit per vehicle than the next most profitable manufacturer.”
Sema concepts are rarely production intent.. the last FJ had a true concept car at the NAIAS that led to production. This is purely for fun and hype
I just saw the Rox. Open air. It’s horrible! I live in extreme weather. I can’t have open air when it’s 0 degrees or 110 degrees. I am so disappointed
Everyone is sick of removable/ soft tops. Jeep plat form with a solid top for more room inside and ready to mount a rooftop tent! Also non electric
Can’t imagine how expensive it’ll be- based on current ludicrous pricing.
Really hope they make these
As a person who thirsted for a 5th gen 4runner for the last 5 years.... I am so over Toyota.
Very cool. Yes please!
$45k for an R2. $60k for the Scout. $80k fj?
I’d love to be excited about it but know its starting price would be no less than $70K, so there’s really no point in me caring.
Only if they make it with a manual transmission!
Toyota, take off your top!
I think Toyota is teasing the next FJ cruiser
