Trying to describe old school SWG, especially Pre-CU, to a newer MMORPG player that wasn't around for the old school games of the genre is an amusing time. How MMORPGs used to be with SWG and before are nothing at all like how later ones did things. Even World of Warcraft was a big departure.
Something a lot can't wrap their heads around was that SWG had item decay. Your stuff will break eventually whereas later games your gear lasts forever. We had a vibrant crafting and player run economy because players needed replacement gear and crafters competed with each other to provide those goods. Stuff was very reasonably priced, especially for gear you just need for day-to-day work. If you had rare mats for fancy gear, you can talk the price down.
It was the only MMORPG I have ever played where adventuring players would argue about who the best armorsmith, weaponsmith, etc. were on the server. Hell, even crafted gear you acquired had a spot to identify who crafted the item. We argued because gear didn't have the same stats, so certain crafters got the stuff right because of skill, quality of mats / crafting tools / experimentation / etc. Then there was pricing.
This sort of stuff no longer flies in modern MMORPGs.

Thats such a well said comment on how things used to be on this amazing MMORPG in its PRE-CU days, and also some other noteworthy sandbox MMORPG's (Thinking of DAOC, Anarchy Online, etc) I got waves of nostalgia just reading your comments on who was the best armorer on this server, etc. I remember seeing a jedi for the first time pre cu days, and it was so fricking amazing. like blew my mind amazing. Granted i was in 7th grade, but still...They dont make em like this no more, and most people dont want it or miss it anyways Sad days.

I would recommend playing multiple servers. I've played several from SWGemu to SWG Legends and all have their pros and cons.
If you are really into multi-class group pvp, Legends is probably best. Tons of original content, plus cloud city. I bit too much content for my tastes.
SWG Beyond is a good alternative to Legends. Small community that is pvp focused. It does have some original content, but not so much that it feels overwhelming to the casual player.
Currently, my favorite is Restoration. It has decent pvp and is very rp friendly. Both the pvp and rp communities seem to get along with each other. It has Jump to Lightspeed, Kash, and Mustafar. Great Community. Closest thing you can get to the CU, but with a lot of the NGE content. There is original content, but again not so much that it feels overwhelming. They recently added two of the NGE heroics.
SWG Evolve is kind of interesting (think of like NGE with hybrid classes). It has base classes, similar to pre-CU/CU, but advance classes are the NGE versions. There is a decent community there, but if you don't get into a guild, you are likely not to see that community. Mos Eisley is usually dead and it is near impossible for the lone wolf to find people to group content, such as heroics.

The only thing good about the original game was the profession tree. It was completely customizable and you had no way of knowing what your opponent would be throwing at you. Beyond that the other servers offer tons more content and actual missions. SWGEmu has been 'working' on Jump to Light Speed for decades and it still hasn't figured it out... It's kinda hard to have a Star Wars game that doesn't have any content in the Stars. JtLS was literally the best part of the game.

Population is a big issue with the ones I played: Legends, Restoration 3, Empire in Flames, Emu. Legends had by far the largest, most active player base. Restoration 3 had a few guys namely in the hubs. But you'll find some on the more popular planets. Empire in Flames? I really liked what the server was trying to do. It's very different from the official game. But population is dead. I remember trying to shop for Stormtrooper Armor. None was on the exchange nor browsing through player shops. I was told I had to get on Discord and put out a request for it, which nobody answered.
Emu is fine gameplay wise, it is Pre-CU after all. But population is a sore issue. It's not dead like Empire in Flames but it is on the low side when I was there.
Low population is a major problem because SWG at its heart, was an old school MMORPG. Back when games of that genre were built with players depending on each other. Characters were never truly self sufficient like in later MMORPGs, so you needed other players. The player population can be so bad that you can't even find Doctor Buffs sometimes, which is crippling for Pre-NGE gameplay. Restoration 3 did have bots giving Doc Buffs in some of the cantinas, i.e. Mos Eisley.
I'm not fond of NGE, but Legends has the liveliest server with a bunch of people running around. None of the others I've tried come anywhere close.
Not having JTL space expansion is a huge detriment, IMO. I think it was the best or among the best parts of SWG. It was also the part of the game that was changed the least when the game had the CU & NGE updates. Legends and Restoration 3 had JTL. Emu does not. I mean... SOE got crucified on SWG's reviews when the game launched because it had no space game. Even SWG's successor, SWTOR, had no space game when it first released. Both games got a black eye for not having it at launch.

    • @clintlewis1715

Legends does have the largest pop, but Restoration is more active than you might think. You have to keep in mind, preCU and CU type servers do things differently than NGE servers and so player cities often become the hubs, since you grind class skill experience through spin groups, rather than leveling up through Legacy quests. You have to learn where the popular hubs are for spinning. For example, on Restoration, if you are wanting to find people to grind skill points with, you might find yourself in Tox City on Tat, which is a popular spot for spin groups. That doesn't mean, Mos Eisley is empty though. You'll almost always find entertainers and doctors there. People also frequent the bazaar terminals in Mos Eisley as well, but player/guild cities have a more important role on servers based on preCU or CU than they do on NGE servers. People hardly used mission terminals after the NGE was implemented, where as before NGE, player city mission terminals is what people used for grinding everything from skill xp to credits to harvesting meat, bone, and hides.
I've tried a lot of SWG servers and the best way to find out if a server has an active and healthy community is to look on the Bazaar terminals. Usually the best indicator is if there are a lot of vendors locations and a lot of stuff being listed/sold. If the vendor section is slim pickings, it usually indicates that the server is dead
Just because you don't see many folks in Mos Eisley, doesn't always mean the server is dead. You just have to learn the lay of the land. It's like SWGemu back in the day. I don't how it is now, but years ago, if you jumped into Mos Eisley, you might think the server was dead, but once you ported over to Coronet you quickly discovered that was the main hub.

The main differences are you can create your own equipment and fly iconic Star Wars ships in SWGLegends. AND, it has the Falcon, which you can decorate the inside of, and if you are really good you can acquire the Falcon as a planet home... C'mon?!

As far as NGE servers go, I have to agree with you. Unfortunately, they will continue to struggle to maintain a healthy population as long as they continue to alienate potential players with their account approval process. Forcing people to go through discord, sit and wait for hours, just to be able to download the launcher is hurting Beyond.
Most people are just going to opt for Legends or Restoration, where all they have to do register on the website, download the launcher, and jump into game. Even Beyond's angry offshoot group that started Evolve is gaining ground on Beyond and will probably surpass them in population before too long.

    • @clintlewis1715
      @clintlewis1715 Месяц назад

Don't need them for SWG Restoration, SWG Beyond, and I've heard you don't need them for SWG Legends either, even though their site says you do. SWG Beyond's site says you need the discs, but you don't. Once you download and start the launcher, the patcher downloads the full game. That might also be true for some of the preCU servers. I haven't tested, so not sure. According to "hearsay" the SWG game files have sunset, so the requirement to actually own the game disks is no more. Your best bet is to just try the server you want to try and see you actually need the game disks or not. I suspect, most don't anymore and just haven't updated their websites to reflect that.
With that said, I do believe you still need the disks for the official SWGemu (Basilisk Server), but you might not on other servers built on the open source SWGemu code, such as SWG Infinity and/or Empire in Flames.

This fragmented player base is not good for the health of the game. I can't imagine there's a whole bunch of new players from younger generations coming in so folk need to be reasonable and realise they need to work together to make this the best experience for everyone put there... There is a 16 man Hardmode Tusken King, 4 Legendary difficulty Heroics, 4 World Bosses, unaltered JTL, atmospheric Mustafar pvp zone, pvp flashpoints, arenas, and a ton of "quality of life" adjustments in the 5 years it has existed. A lot of the servers no longer require an original copy of the game as the files are now considered open source. You download the launcher and the patcher installs the full game. I know for sure that SWG Restoration and SWG Evolve do not require the original game discs. I have heard this is also true for SWG Legends, however their website says that they are required.

Not good, if you ever want to play the Emulators. If, you don't want to ever play SWG again. The, your good, heheh. Sometimes, some Emulator sites will have a download area. Where, you can re-download the disc programs. There, is E-bay too.

Ummmm, I've only heard of Finalizer being called SWGemu. It was SWGemu when it was the Basilist server. It literally started out as SWGemu. Infinity and Empire in Flames are literally modified SWGemu servers. So yeah, most people do still call it SWGemu. Unless you playing on Legends, Beyond, Evolve, or Restoration which are based on different code.

Legacy - I was playing the game till I became CSR, and found they were no policing any multi-accounting, and when players gave snark, I had no support to deal with them. So I was zero value, playing fair, in a servers others could just load another 10 characters and get extra daily tokens etc. The owner protected someone from discipline, he should have got, and lost the player that was showing everyone the way and helping. I lost the will to help people who never gave back quickly. Games dead, face it! Never gunno be anything like it was in live again. None of the private servers get it right.

Restoration all the way. Legends is the version that killed SWG! Shame!

@greymangaming1877 32 professions and uses the combat upgrade. The jedi unlock system is grind based. Adding some content as well. It's unique but I'd recommend starting with Legends

@@greymangaming1877 Legends is easier to pick up and play but not as in-depth for character building but Legends has probably the best space combat; every server has pros and cons but if you're not going to drop a LOT of time into making a character, starting over and doing it right, and learning a ton of systems you'll probably want to start on Legends and build from there.
