    You set the standard of what all RUclips tutorials/information should be. The depth of information you give is outstanding! As in anything taught, the “why” explanation needs to be fulfilled before someone will accept and retain the knowledge, you do this perfectly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

    Is there any reason to not use 24 FPS in the UK? I prefer that as it nicely divides up to play 30 FPS footage at 80% speed or 60 FPS footage at 40% speed, so to me seems more flexible

    Like the history lesson. Most of us are new to filming and certainly trying to do movie quality video from our drones. Appreciate that you do so much more than just give us the info, but the reasoning behind the info. Keep it up! Oh... a follow-up question. Can I assume if I shoot the same video at 60 fps as opposed to 30 fps, the resulting file would be twice as large?

    • @DroneFilmGuide

      Hey Paul! Glad you're finding the videos useful! Sure thing, more frames = larger file sizes so it all adds up if you're not doing it for a reason.

    Awesome info and the truth on frame rates!
    I remember watching the Daly’s when I worked on the movie Dante’s Peak back in the day and they talked about framerates and I couldn’t understand it and wondered how they got that cinema look in the 1/8th scale models. I controlled the vehicles (humvees) across the bridge scene.:) Thank you and my storage thanks you! Lol. Oh, I followed you on Instagram!

    Just the great advice I have been looking for to fly my new dji mini 3 pro..... Also, what is the best micro sd card to use in drones as hear sd cards can cause an issue?

  • @adnan_velic
    @adnan_velic 5 лет назад +10

    One thing I’d like to throw in is that the speed of how fast your micro SD card writes is very important. If you shoot in 4K 24fps shutter is set to 1/50 you may experience some jitters especially when panning up. Lexar makes a very fast micro SD that writes up to 222mb per second. It may be overkill but for my mavic 2 pro shooting in h265 and mlog I just wasn’t getting the correct look even with my sandisk extreme plus.

    • @sstteevveenn77

      This is great info, I know this comment was months ago but I have some questions. I have a Sandisk Extreme Plus and shooting 4k24fps I get lots of jitters like you mention, what micro SD card do you recommend for the Mavic Air 2?

    • @aldolega
      @aldolega 2 года назад

      This has literally nothing to do with 24p judder. The bitrate is the same for 24p and 60p. The card doesn't know what framerate it's writing.

    24/30 FPS is standard because that is what we have been FORCED to adapt to.
    But I HATE the choppy choppy, even with proper motion blur.
    60 fps is FAR superior in most cases. We are just not used to it. Once you are, you will understand.
    If you NEED that fake (ie "cinematic") motion blur, you can still get it with a 1/70 shutter speed at 60 FPS. (choppy 30 fps uses 1/60 shutter so there is little difference.)
    The beauty of butter smooth 60 fps is lost in this sad insistence of keeping 24-30 fps standard.

    Hello Stewart, nice videos on your channel, it's a great source of information, so thank you for that. After watching this one, I have a question. Do you think it's a good idea to always film at 60fps and downgrade it to 24fps in post productiion. The idea is to be able to slow motion any rush on post production if needed (not possible if always filming at 24fps). It is a big difference between a 24fps rush and a 60fps rush turned into 24fps ? Thanks for your reply ;)

    Love it but in practice dji have locked their quickshots at 30fps. As a result I shoot my regular shots at 30fps so as not to have the headache of mixing frame rates. Unless there is a better solution?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 лет назад +3

      I'm a big fan of some of the quickshots too, especially if I'm filming myself out and about. If I switch my exposure to manual then I am able to change the framerate to 25fps. Took me ages to realise that the app was doing the quickshots at 30fps. It results in a dropped frames look when you put it in a 25fps timeline.

    It's safer to just shoot in 30FPS so if you need to use the footage for either television or cinematic use it's better to have 30 FPS and just automatically slow the footage down in post for 24FPS if you or a client needs that amazing cinematic look.

  • @daveeverett9341
    @daveeverett9341 6 лет назад +4

    Thank you! Additional minor points are that 60fps is useful for in-close flying with faster pans or with sports action. I find that makes the movement easier to follow with less gaps in the action. Also, when observing the 180 rule, lower frame rates mandate slower shutter speeds, so in the U.S., for instance, 24fps means 1/60 second which also means more light on the sensor with no option to stop down on many fixed aperture small drone lenses Wich are f/2.2~2.8. ... just another consideration when shooting at lower rates...

    I'm going to disagree, for what I do. I'm not filming for motion pictures. The jittery motion at 24 to 30 FPS annoys the crap out of me. There are several work-arounds I can use to get something that isn't jittery at 24 FPS. First slow panning and high elevation shots work at 24 FPS (yawn). Second, muck about with filters to force motion blur. I neither have hundreds of dollars spare for those filters nor time to muck about with manual exposure. Third, spend $15k on a drone with variable aperture. But why bother? 24 FPS was chosen for cheapness. Even more so nowadays with digital animation. By this argument we should all filming in 480p - same arguments apply (image noise, etc.) I don't think it relates to cinematic vs sports television. I think it's the content your filming. For a mix of digital animation and real world - blur it as much as possible to conceal the mismatch. Likewise, we don't like to see the dimples in an actors skin - soften it out. Marketing - smudge out the imperfections in the extrusion moulding. But I like to see the natural world in its sharpest detail.

    I’d have agreed fully just last year! BUT, having actually experimented and shown the results to a panel, a group of a dozen people, they almost all preferred the smoothness of 4K footage shot at 30fps and higher. Now…let’s note…this is 4K video…not 1080, and the footage was from a drone flying slowly over a field of waving grass which definitely looked smoother at 30fps+, than it did at 24fps. Also, we have to bear in mind that we have to match the frame rate if we are using a drone and a land based camera or it will end badly trying to combine footage shot in different frame rates. And the refresh rate of the monitor has a bearing on this too! Experiment and learn I say, but we also need a “go to” standard!!

    Real time footage is actually 1000 frames. Our eyes can see much more than that. So...🤔🤔😣 I mean I get what you're saying but we live in 2020 where 120 and 200 frames is a breeze with PC's. Universal Studios is definitely not using 30 frames on their theme park rides. Those rides are between 60 and 120. Harry Potter ride is shown at 120

    noy really saying anything.other then Hollywood uses low framerate content like 24fps.. we been used to that so that is better for cinematic, because other framerates looks weird, and then uses the two Hobbit 48fps as proof of concept.. yes hollywood uses low framerate content and that low framerate content clashes with modern standards, where TV manufacters needs to jump thrue hoops, to get that to fit into modern tech with fast pixelresponserates, like fx OLEDs.. where low framerate content often elevate stutter.
    when I whats my Cinematic landscape shots on my LG 4K OLED, I need to crank the processing to the max, as otherwise its one stuttery mess, so dont write anything off.. trial and error and find what you prefer ..

    Wow, so glad I found you!! Subscribed already! Two questions: I live in Brazil and normally make my Mavic Air videos for RUclips. I normally shoot 4K - 30 fps. If I want the videos a bit more cinematic, should I shoot in 4K 24 or 25 fps? Does the 24 (USA) vs 25 (EU) apply to RUclips??
    Also, I plan on buying the Osmo Pocket for my 'land' takes. I was considering shooting everything in 4K 30 for the general takes and 60 fps for the slow motion takes. Does it make sense, or should I try to go for the 24/25 fps. And, if so, I would probably need to shoot slower than 1/60, to follow the 180º rule, which I try to follow, using ND filters. So then, I would have to use 1/50 on my cameras?
    Thanks a lot, and keep up with the great work!

      30 frames is not smooth. You can see the skips. I've watched many videos in 4k from drones and each time.there are very short .04 to .06 of a millisecond pauses in each one. It's like a laggy videogame. It's rarely noticable with 60 frames. And at 120 frames you just don't see any pauses at all.

  • @JohnMark61355
    @JohnMark61355 4 года назад +1

    Thanks for the video. I apologize if someone else has already mentioned this, but 60fps or more is often preferred for fast action and/or if the camera is moving fast such as a first person view (FPV) quadcopter. Because of the flight controller tune and/the construction of the quad, there sometimes will be more jello in lower frame rate video. I enjoy slow, cinematic, quad flight sometimes, but often I want to fly fast. The combination of the quad vibration and a slow frame rate can increase the jello and the video will have significantly less jello at a higher frame rate. As you said, it depends on the situation.

    To add...I loved that Peter Jackson 60fps. When I saw it I was amazed by how realistic it was. I know a lot of people hated it, but it all came down to preference and people are just too use to 24fps because 60fps looked "fake". :)
    And a question I must ask about the frame rates. Is it possible to just always shoot at 120fps and conform down to 24fps to give it that clean cinematic look still? I'm guessing you will be teaching all that in your class?

      Hey Andy! I'd stay away from 120fps because the quality is really poor. Also, I wouldn't equate the super slow motion that 120fps gives you with a 'cinematic look'. Like the discussion in the video about 48/50/60 fps, 120fps is just another high frame rate that you can use to slow down the footage in post. But the quality really does suffer on this one.

    You're right. But, film ran at 15-18 fps until sound forced it up to 24. We're all used to 24fps from watching movies our whole lives. Television always looked too much like real life and was because of the frame rate. NTSC was actually at 45fps, 60 fields/30frames averages to 45.
    24fps shot and played at 24fps is real time, but not full resolution time as your eye sees it. That adds a magical quality to the presentation. Think about those times you may have seen a "behind the scenes" clip shot on video, and at the end the finished scene on film is shown. Same lighting and camera angles, but the film just seems so much better.

      Hey! Not to split hairs, but the 30 frames are interlaced with an upper and lower field which gives you the 60 fields. It's still 30fps though, not 45.

      Yes, I read that in 1996 "Fundamentals of Television" which I no longer have on my shelf, but It can be found in google.books. I had confused frame rate with flicker rate. Film's projected flicker rate is 48 fps, you just see the same frame twice. NTSC was 45, just barely enough. Memory fades!

    Hi Stewart.
    I have a problem with
    stutter in my P3P futage.
    By default i use 50 fps to drop it down in post (interpret as 30fps) so my flying motion would be smoother. My raw futage has no stutter...
    Here is example: ruclips.net/video/coNWUonK7Uw/видео.html
    My questions are:
    1. Why my futge stutters and how to fix it.
    2. Why in Pr i see that actualy it's not 50fps but 47,95fps?
    3. Is there some rule of time changing like, only eaven
    division like 50% of 50fps is 25 so that no frame is in half like 24,5...
    I'm looking around but no body put's on topic of stutter in film... Maby it would be good idea for next film :)
    Hope you'll be so kind to find time for answer. It would help greatly in
    development of Polish arial videography ;)

    Thanks, as is the case with your videos I gain understanding and improve. I was researching the subject because I shoot real estate images and videos and at times, e.g., I pan a deck, or I do a home flyover and deck or pool reveal, etc, my video sequences are jittery... I typically shoot at 24FPS. I’m going to test 30 and 48FPS and see if I address this issue. I can shoot 4K @ 30FPS and 2.7K @48FPS, image quality shouldn’t be an issue. Please let me know if you have suggestions?

    Great video thankyou. My number 1 source for info so thanks guys. 1 Question i have the mavic 2 pro (learning to film properly) If i'm making a project in 4k and want to add a slow motion clip .. i would have to record in 2k to get my 50fps (im uk) as 4k only offers 30fps .. that slow motion clip can still be added to a 4k project right? or would the image quality be too poor that i would have to downscale the 4k into a 2k project? thanks

    Lower FPS does not mean more information, it simply allows you in increase the exposure to an extent. Modern cameras can easily handle 30 or 60 FPS just fine. Modern cameras for cinema often shoot at a much high fps then is is needed. Red cameras are a great example allowing more flexibility in post.

    Great tips as always, I have the Mavic Mini and have been experimenting with different settings, only done about 6 flights so far due to work and weather! But have some great results, that I know will improve with all the videos I have watched including yours :) I can relate to some of your comments in that with TV upgrades from PAL 521 lines, 720p TV 1080p 4k etc and differing display frequencies I have had all of these TV's and in showrooms, whilst fantastic looking demos of highly saturated video with sharper than life movement (No Motion Blur) I always thought these £1000+ TV's did not look natural and any film you watch will revert to 24 / 25 FPS and look just a bit crisper than with the older TV. I have adjusted most of my camera settings and gimbal speed in the Mini and cannot wait to see how I can capture some fantastic scenery soon ;) Thanks

    The loss in quality as you go up in frame rate is often overlooked. But if you're recording 100mb/s, then 25fps will be allocating double the data per frame, as opposed to 50fps.

    Thank you. As a Newbie, I changed my Drone settings (from default) based on other videos...but of course, they were Post. this was very clear around quality and frame rate. After my changes from the default, I wondered why the first RAW I had was way better than that of my changes. This clarifies why. Thank you for sharing.

    Hi Stuart,
    I just shoot videos for my own use but I still like to have a decent quality . Im getting on in years so dont know much about all the terms used . If Im shooting at 24 fpm even with a nd filter I still at times cant get the shutter at 50 and have to turn the shutter wheel on the mavic pro to get the right exposure . Does this matter a great deal . Thanks .. Bill

    Great video as always, I am learning so much from you guys. I was hoping though that you'll speak about some of the limitations of 24fps and maybe how to overcome them. I was doing a very slow 360 pan shot at 24fps with my Mavic Air and it looks terrible, very jittery. Then I switched to 30fps and everything looks fine. I followed the 180 rule in both shots, had an appropriate ND filter on (EV ~ 0) but only with 30fps there was no stutter noticable. Is this specific to the Mav Air and do we really lose all that "cinema" effect with just 6 fps more? I don't think it looks videogame like but gives me the option to do a short pan without stutter and without the need to move while paning. Did you never run into stutter troubles @24fps?

  • @Vsankari
    @Vsankari 4 года назад

    What are your thoughts in shooting with 30fps and then slowing it down to 80% afterwords? It's often adviced to do this to remove the jitter -that you might sometimes get.

    Stuart, this is an excellent video with a very useful and practical view of the subject. Adding the history was also a nice touch. One additional thing I would add is that shooting in higher frame rates also wastes storage. This is an additional benefit of shooting 24/15 FPS.

    Great video as always Stewart! I normally shoot 4K at 30fps using the 180 rule at 60 shutter speed here in the U.S. with my MA drone as well as my other video equipment. I definitely love the cinematic look. I have a couple questions if I may;
    1) Is there a big difference between 24fps and 30fps in regards to smooth jitter free footage?
    2) I'm just getting started in FCPX coming from years using Sony Vegas Pro. If I was to switch over to 24fps, would it edit well mixed with 30fps footage in the same timeline? If so, Is there any certain settings that should be made?
    I realize I'm asking a lot here but, with your awesome experience I would like to hear your recommendation. I have learned so much from your videos and can't tell you enough how much I appreciate them. As always, I can't wait to see your next one. Thank you, Ray 👍😊

      You've made some great points as well. I would imagine mixing frame rates wouldn't play nice with each other in the same timeline as well. I'm sure Stewart will chime in and let us know one way or the other. Thanks for replying David. Ray 😊

      Smooth jitter free, it makes no odds with the good gimbals on drones we have nowadays. 24fps looks more cinematic, looks more pleasing to the eye. try it at home you'll notice a difference:)

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 лет назад +1

      Hey! Always a pleasure to hear from you Raymond! You need to have quite a discerning eye to see the difference between 24fps and 30fps so it's not worth unduly worrying about. 30fps looks a bit 'smoother' because of the extra frames but personally, I don't see this as a positive. By this logic, 60fps looks super 'smooth' with complete clarity irrespective of how quick the camera movement is, e.g. a fast pan. But again, I don't find this desirable - it looks like a computer game. I haven't tried 30fps in a 24fps timeline but I have in a 25fps timeline and it stutters as it tries to drop the frames so on that basis, as a general point, I'd certainly try to avoid mixing frame rates. If find it stutters and you want to use the shot, FCPX also has Optical Flow which can smooth out the footage. We accidentally shot a bunch of Quick Shot clips at 30fps and used Optical Flow to smooth them in our 25fps timeline.

    • @rapaent
      @rapaent 6 лет назад

      Hi Stewart, Thank you so very much for taking the time in answering my questions! I had the feeling that mixing frame rates wouldn't play nice together causing stutter. Optical flow sounds like it could be a great tool if needed. Thank you for pointing that out, I wasn't aware of that feature. I value your perspective and expertise, I can't thank you enough for your input. Your video's are awesome and as always, I can't wait to see your next one. Thank You and Happy Flying 👏😊

      @@DroneFilmGuide does dropping 30fps in a 25fps timeline drop frames? If you interpret the footage all it should do is slow it down a little in the same style as 60fps to 30fps.
