Don't let the anger and frustration get to you . Keep your blood pressure down. But it is easy to feel the way you do when there are so many lies and denials. Great reactions Mike.
thanks Gerald!
this show was a tough watch, very emotional, but important for humanity to be aware of
Despite being 1200 km from Chernobyl over 10,000 UK farms had restrictions imposed on their livestock. Heavy rain in Wales, Scotland and north west England occurred as the radioactive cloud passed overhead, contaminating the land. Only in 2012 was the last restriction lifted. I was only 11 at the time but still remember it well.
I am not sure if anyone has said it yet, but YES that was the actual fire fighter recording.
I'm actually ancient enough to remember this whole thing when it happened. It's a hard watch knowing it's a real story (Hollywoodized a little of course) but I've watched it twice in its entirety. I'll be behind you through your first time. You won't be alone on your journey Mike.
oh wow! must've been pretty shocking to witness it all unfold first hand even if from afar. glad to have you on this journey with me!
Something to keep in mind as you process what you are seeing in this first episode is that, as far as everyone is concerned, an RBMK reactor cannot explode...it is physically not possible. They have been assured by the leadership of the Soviet Union that is true, and whatever the Soviet leadership tells them can be relied upon 100 percent. Regardless of whether or not the people of the USSR actually believe that their government is incapable of making any major mistakes, that is how they were expected to live out their lives. That is why there is no containment structure around the reactors, why there were no stable iodine pills distributed or even stockpiled near the reactors, and why so many people simply did not believe the reactor had exploded as they show in the series.
It shows what a great actor the guy playing Dyatlov is to be so hateable here, as he's widely known in the UK for being one of the funniest and most loveable British sitcom characters of the last 10 years, so seeing him here is a far departure from what we're used to. Sadly, Paul Ritter died of a brain tumour at only 54 in 2021. Well worth checking out the show he was in, Friday Night Dinner, you'll love it. Very unique premise for a sitcom.
oh wow, RIP. he is fantastic in this show. so interesting that he was in a sitcom! must be such a chameleon of an actor
I was just a kid in high school when this happened. It was so terrible, I could barely comprehend it.
wow i could hardly imagine
Yes i can confirm, that in europe in 1986 were totally different times. Specialy in rusia and yugoslavia, where comunist regime ruled... 1 word to much, and you were punished with prison... I'm from Slovenia. Here was komunism too, but was not so harsh as in ex Soviete union. And Slovenia is about 1400 Km (777 Mi) away from disaster (Chernobyl UA), but still that radioctive cloud came here. I was 6 years old when this happened. Here was panic, when radioactive cloud came to us. That year, we throw away all the vegetables from garden and all potatoe from field... I can remember i was in the middle of the field and rain caught me. When i came home, was panic. Instant shower... My grandpa got geiger counter and he measured radiation. It was about 8 times higher than normal background radiation, which is about 0,15 microsiverts. Not good, but still was not too high. Imagine. In Ukraine in Kyiv people were exposed 24/7 with much much higher levels, before radiation dropped. Not good times at all.
wow that sounds so terrifying! im glad you're here and able to share your experience. i cant imagine having been in your shoes during that time
Stumbled across your channel because you're reacting to this series. Initially i thought Eddie Murphy had started a reaction channel 😅
Excellent reaction. Looking forward to the following episodes. Peace from England ✌️
This is such an important show. Thank you reacting to this. I know it’s ridiculously frustrating, but it happened just like this. It’s crazy.
I loved your reactions to the soviet mentality.
The government was always right and even if it wasn't, it was right anyway. If you tried to speak the truth, you were threatened into silence or worse, imprisoned or killed. Possibly with your entire family. You couldn't disappoint your supervisors because if you told them something they didn't like, you'd be in huge trouble, possibly under chargers like sabotage.
At this stage, those people were more scared of their government that the nuclear disaster they caused.
As a Polish person I'm very impressed with how well this show handled this issue
yeah its been so interesting learning about the repressive ideologies and norms there. the show is doing a good job of demonstrating that to a viewer like myself who is fairly distanced from it all
I can't believe Maester Luwin would suggest such a thing!
some say tasting metal happens because literally the taste buds decompose and you taste dead cells
No, it's to do with the radiation ionizing the air around your tongue. This triggers your taste buds in weird ways and your brain doesn't know what to do with the signals it's getting so interprets them as metal.
No, the radiation damaged the tiny capillaries and they burst. The metallic taste was the blood that flowed from the capillaries. It were minute amounts but those were on of the first demonstrations of an acute radiation illness.
This series is great. A tragic action that could have been prevented.
The soviet nuclear system was classified as a state secret by the KGB, thats why little is known. In Soviet union u are told what to do. If u object u r just shot.the series is historically accurate, with film makers license of course. I always dirt time reactors to real history
Let's go!
I don't typically like reaction videos, but I thoroughly enjoyed this
Also, the firefighter who's hand was burned picked up a chunk of GRAPHITE - which you'll learn a lot more about while watching this series, especially in the next episode. The mineral he picked up essentially tore through his hand, not because it was hot (which it was, to be fair) but because it was extremely radioactive
Really enjoying your level of engagement and honest reaction to this; can't wait for the next part!
Edit: I also hope I can ease your mind by telling you that the real life Dyatlov was NOT an asshole, just strict - he stayed all night helping out with the accident and took accountability for it up until his death. His character being the antagonist of the series represents how awful the Soviet Union was in regards to the accident
Just watched the second episode and learned this! So wild
So glad you enjoyed the reaction! And that's super interesting they changed that, probably to represent the SU's reaction as you're saying.
Great choice for next series. Love the passion in this reaction.
As for why the characters act like they do. This was in Soviet Russia, it was not a part of their political culture to admit they F’d up or to take responsibility. They’d rather just lie to everyone and themselves.
That's what I've been learning from others re: the political culture as well! Very interesting and sad to see the ways that contributed to this disaster. I wonder how much if any of that is gendered too? We see it primarily amongst men in the series thus far.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed friend!
It wasn't Soviet Russia. It was the Soviet Union, but in the Ukrainian SSR, not Russia (the Russian SSR)
Russia and the Soviet Union were not the same thing. Russia was a constituent of the Soviet Union.
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME SIR" me too, baby, me too. that authoritarian soviet attitude smh 🤦🏻♂️
YT won't let me comment like I normally do...maybe they won't delete everything I write just because they are pieces of S.
This show is one of the best ever made...with nearly documentary level accuracy in some cases. But they did not get everything right, and not all of the stuff they got wrong is just simple things they changed for dramatic purposes. The makers of the show put out a podcast for each episode, and they talk about a lot of the things they changed, but not all of them. There are also articles you can read that cover the things the show got wrong, but I dare not even try to suggest any of them that I think are good...or YT will just delete me again.
interesting! i'll have to check out that podcast
@@turnupthemike_ YT will probably delete this, but sometimes stuff can be said in reply that cannot be said in a regular comment...the best article I have found that covers most of the things the show got wrong, and is easy and quick to read, is from History vs Hollywood. There are many great articles there about a lot of historical movies, and how many of them are not really historical. 👍
I appreciate that your reactions are so genuine. Imagine though that you were born in Russia at this time, even to this day, you may not even know this happened, they refused to teach Russian citizens about this.
which is so troubling to think about smh...thanks for watching friend
Keep listening to the government. They know best. And let's not speak about communism. That's really when the government knows best.
