    I usually hate a back 3, but you've convinced me! Saka at LWB and Trent at RWB gives us width on both sides, while getting a world class player on the pitch in a position he knows (trent) with walker to cover behind. Saka should be able to play high enough that he doesn't feel like he's playing left back and has forgotten what to do, also perfect for Trent's big switches to Saka. Like many others, I'd play Foden right, with Mainoo and Trent, then Bellingham left with Saka and rice, creates some lovely triangles on both sides and plenty of back post threat. I'm actually including Gomez over Trippier because Gomez has been a much more capable LB over the last 9-12 months and a preferable option at CB to Dunk; it's Konsa who I'd start over Walker. Gomez and Konsa give you added size and strength, you don't sacrifice too much pace and are better in the air than Trippier and Walker (who I think has been average at best this tournament). The back 3 will allow Trent and Saka to get forward without compromising defensive solidity, Bellingham can easily affect the game from a deeper position and won't get in the way of Foden and by playing Toney up front with Kane it provides physical presence and an out-ball while still allowing Kane to drop deeper (where he could have Toney, Saka and Trent ahead of him to pass to).

    As I said at the beginning of the tournament on your podcast. Saka has to play lb/wb(need a left footer for width, how often has Trippierbeen on.the final third only to have to cut back?), Gordon has to play( only player in the squad who runs in behind). You ask Walker/Gomes tuck in to add the defensive security. Trent starts in the middle but drifts out right so he offers the width and open up his passing range, which with Gordon playing will greatly increase. Bellingham has to play b2b. Then either Foden or Palmer to drift in. Kane will get more space without having to come so deep because defences will be wary of Gordon in behind.

    Foden or Palmer as the right side attacking mid for me and Bellingham on the left, more threat coming inside on their strongest foot with an outlet on the overlap👌
    Its either this, or pure brexit-ball. Kane and Toney up top. Midfield three. Compact defense, long balls, hold up play, counter attacking football and loads of balls into the box. Would stink the place out, but at least it would be structured 😂

    Gordon on left. He knows how to play against Schar and will track back for defense. Foden right side more dangerous with his left foot. Kane more for the right post. Bellingham more left to link with Gordon. Saka or Gomes left back.

    i'm not english so coming from a more neutral point of view - Bellingham has been poor. If you want to have 2 attacking mids somebody has to run beyond Kane. Everything is to feet and nobody is stretching the field. I would think of Palmer on the wing and saka in a wingback/flying fb up the left. Saka has not been good enough to keep his spot. Foden needs to come inside and Trippier needs to keep width

    Why dont england play 3-2-4-1 walker(lcb), stones ,guehi(rcb) trent inverting into midfield with rice, gordon, bellingham, foden, saka and kane up top can defend in a 4-4-2 with bellingham dropping alongside rice with foden as 10. Solves all england problems, Trent being more progressive then rice (also threat combined with gordon running behind), space in the left occupied by gordon while strtching the field, foden as no 10, and bellingham allowed to crash the box late (becaudse of trent inverting to hold rcm space)

    James, can I get your opinion on this please?
    We go to a 352 (3412)
    GK - Pickford
    CB's - Walker, Stones ans Konsa
    LWB - Saka
    RWB - Trend
    CM - Rice and Mainoo
    CAM - Jude
    ST - Kane and Toney
    If we was to line up like this (and yea it would be a little risk) I feel we will wipe the floor with Switzerland, and probably beats most if not all teams out there. This line-up would pretty much have everything needed to win

  • @dannybarwick
    @dannybarwick 5 дней назад

    I picked an 11 before watching that looked quite similar, same shape but no Foden or Saka, not easy decisions but purely because something radical needs to happen now as England really have no right to still be in the competition. Just thought Saka looked spent, also didn’t feel comfortable leaving out Foden as feel he’s actually been decent, but no chance of Bellingham being dropped. I went for Palmer on right, alongside Jude behind Kane with Gordon and Trent wide, but inclined to agree with you now. Saka is world class and offers more defensive quality/shape vs Gordon and suits the back post strategy mentioned. That’s why I went for Palmer for those in-swinging left foot crosses, and the fact changes are necessary and he has earned the right to have a go. However, you are probably right, I just fear that without revitalising the team with the hunger/energy of Palmer/Gordon and Trent from the start the game could be gone before they ever even get chance to be super subs, especially if just thrown on in desperation with 30 mins or less to go. 3 at the back is imperative, Walker/Trippier have offered nothing going forward and we’ve suffered massively. Always been with Southgate, but this is last chance saloon at this tournament and minor tweaks will not bring sufficient uptick in performance. It’s try something different or the plane home.

    Love the analysis James and love 3-4-3. I think Konsa will play at the back; I'd love to see Wharton instead of Rice as his passing is v progressive. The front 3 is where I take the main issue - you say we have to get around the Swiss and stretch them, and then you go and pick the same old, same old.
    My front 3 would be Gordon, Watkins and Palmer.

  • @EPL_Scout
    @EPL_Scout 6 дней назад

    We have to get our press right against Switzerland (that's even if Gareth wants to press). Switzerland will be set up similar to Denmark, although probably more fluid with their positioning. If we play the same system with Rice & Mainoo instructed to stay deeper and cover the full-backs, we have to make sure Xhaka & Freuler are marked and we don't give their centre-backs so much time. It's 4v5 but it can be done if we funnel them down one side. I'd just tell Kane to sit on Akanji, with Foden & Saka tucking in and jumping up to the wide CB's depending which side they go down. Against Denmark, our midfield was deep, and our front four didn't know who to mark, when to press and what was behind them.
    If Southgate was braver, we could go man-to-man and more of a 4-3-3. The front 3 press their back 3, Bellingham & Mainoo press Xhaka & Freuler, with Rice sweeping up behind and the full-backs jumping up to their wing-backs.
    When we have the ball, can we outnumber there 2 in midfield? Or like James says, get down the sides with pace and maybe more direct play. But we don't get that with Trippier & Foden down the left. Gordon surely has to play, or Saka down that left side. 3-4-3 might be a good option, with Trent & Saka providing the width and crosses. I'd have Bellingham come in from the left and Foden from the right to offer some variety. The only concern is we aren't used to playing this system and to try it in a quarter final is risky and could back fire.

    We need to win the midfield battle which is a massive ask with how well Xhaka has influenced them.
    That means we need intelligent players who arent going to let their heads drop and accept a low block. Ive not been happy with how willing rice is to drop deep. He comes too deep to collect the ball when our cbs can pass. It forces the team into being pressed even more into our half.
    Mainoo has been fantastic. I honestly wouldnt mind seing Wharton with him tbh. I just feel like he wont so essily fall into psssive football like Rice does.

He can work Toblerone triangles with the best of them, he'd probably be playing in front of teammate Trippier. Trent's diagonal balls to the left side would be oh so reminiscent of Schar's long balls for Newcastle.. oh and of course he's going up against Schar, someone he's used to.
