Bristol Hospital BRI Underground Tunnels WE SNEAKED IN

  • There are lots of service tunnels for Bristol's Hospitals. We explore a tiny portion here. when we unexpectedly got into active tunnels. We were looking for older tunnels but found active tunnels and couldnt help but have a peek where they went.
We have removed locations and entry points because we consider these tunnels to be not on the normal Urbex map so probably dont need to be visited as they are in use.

As a steeplejack I've visited many MOD sites and been places that very few get to tread it's an amazing feeling I can feel it again in your videos thanks. I stood on top of crystal palace radio mast.
There's a weather shelter 450 feet up the mast with the most fantastic collection of vintage pawnagrafa magazines, piles and piles or them, so many I often wondered how they got them there in such numbers with so few people ever having to go there..
Also we put lightning protection on Newport railway station and broke through the platform into a tiled toilet cisterns bogs black and white tiled floors, we eventually abandoned the job as we found out there is an entire railway station below the existing one. We went down a subway and through a locked door to a vaulted brick room where there was a door we weren't allowed through.. the red brick building is now residential and the station has moved 100 meters west.
Somewhere you may want to try and enter..

Tunnels at hospitals, particularly those built post WWII up until the 1990’s when the PFI hospital contracts began, where know as ‘Local Distribution Systems’...they typically served a lot of structures that had a separate boiler house, and water and steam was piped into the hospital via the distribution systems...this meant that the boiler houses, which were regarded as unsafe to be within the hospital building, were located away from the main hospital structure... over the years other services may have been added, such as electricity, telecoms, gas etc... As you rightly state, many of the pipes in these tunnels still appear to be ‘lagged’ and probably contain very dangerous asbestos lagging, a cotton wool like substance, which if damaged would allow asbestos fines into the atmosphere of the tunnels and lay in dust on surfaces...steam pipes are also highly dangerous, and likely contain what is known as ‘superheated steam’, which if a pipe bursts or leaks from being climbed on, etc, could cut you in half or amputate limbs...not very nice...a lot of the pipes seem to have been recovered, where lagging may have been removed, or was rewrapped to enclose it... just remember that some hospital patients lives may depend on the services you are intruding upon...so definitely do not touch...!! I also noticed that in the cages near the steps that went up were pipes medical gases...these are now no longer stored underground, but on surface installations..obviously, because of the risks of gas escapes etc...these link directly to gas supplies to hospital beds and operating theatres...so again...do not touch...!!...whilst I can understand buggering around on old MoD sites, I find your actions here somewhat irresponsible... I hope you had the balls to let the hospital know of the security issue here...!!

Me and a few friends went in these tunnels in the late 80s it was very different then the entrance we used was in a secluded wooded area and after watching your video it was very different. We had a shorter ladder down and when we went uphill we had a 90degree turn left and right and when we turned right it went on for a really long way it had a couple of long ladders up that were smaller than the one at 13 odd min here they were just manholes every now and then some deeper than others we followed the tunnel straight downhill until we assumed we were under (about) New Cheltenham and it had a 90 degree left tunnel junction.. we were so worried our BMXs would be stolen we turned back but we think these tunnels may go so far as to connect to other hospitals? Cosham even or Frenchay?
I'm so glad I found this video I've told so many people that didn't believe they existed.
Also if you actually read this when I was about 5 or 6 (late 70s) we used to go DOWN Cabot tower. The entrance goes left but as a kid we climbed over the turnstile and went down a dark spiral staircase for as far as we dare, we didn't have torches. When I returned in the late 80s and climbed over it had been concreted up I was gutted. We went down and down and down lower than the tower is high I remember my brother counted the steps.
    Where it goes, nobody knows?
I had to stop, my juvenile record wouldn't allow any more mischief... 😂

The white pipes are preinsulated, so the flanges are exposed thus covered with insulation blankets post install. They are too dangerous to remove so left in place when redundant. Can't see any condensate return pipes, but they will be small. Exposed copper pipes are medical gases and suction. Steam is efficient for large complex sites as it requires no pumping and lower pressure drops across pipe networks. Water purifier and calorifier in there too.

I’ve worked in those tunnels with a team of 10 sparkies running a massive SWA cable from street level at the front of the BRI to the mains intake building which was near where you entered on the same level as the Oncology department and it was bloody hot and cramped climbing on those pipes dragging a massive cable and then securing it
