That would be amazing! Im not sure what he is planning on using to hide the vertical garage, but if he has some sort of lid or cover and it just fills with the fog underneath and then the car just lifts out of it... that almost gives off chills it would be so cool!!

Colin, When you do the tunnel to your bunker. You should do a side small bunker. And use it for a kitchen to do your tea and snacks. And with that, you should have an escape hatch there. But not any ordinary one like the others. It should attach to an old well. And use a spiral staircase to go up-and-down from the surface to the bunker. With a door at the bottom. From the surface, it'll look just like an old-fashioned well with a bucket. Just cut the side of the well to access the staircase. Love the videos.

The fact that this absolutely mad project is taking place in a confined residential setting is somewhat astounding. The only reason councils all over won’t need to worry about copycats is that most people in such settings lack the combination of raw ambition, resources, time and money to pull off something so utterly insane yet undeniably cool! I always though I was just weird for loving everything underground, like caves, tunnels, basements, etc. so I am kind of in disbelieve to see that you (a brillian and super succesful man) chare this passion. I'm not sure do you ever see this comment, but if you do I would like to ask you that what do you like about the underground? For me it is the calmness, peace of mind, the earth smells, the feeling of being hidden, the quietness, and the feeling of timelessness.
Colin is building the world's most niche parking garage, and he's doing it from the inside out. Love it.

A clay spade would come in handy for you. It's a bit heavy like 40 lb jack hammer with a scoop on the end. Takes clay out fast. Just needs a huge compressor....
Colin's family, neighbors, and city council all have the patience of saints for letting this awesome project happen, and putting up with the possible noise and destruction. 😁

a: WOW! wonderfull, great and inspiring project! and one of the sweetiest cars ever!
b: pls be carefull! double safety, check everything around before you brake your skull for a (absolutly great) work! it's better to cover too much once than to hit too much once....
You’ve successfully undermined your buildings foundation. Your foundations elements work on a 1:1 triangular zone of influence beneath the footings. They specifically bear on clay a typically weaker soil type. You should underpin the exposed foundations to the base of the tunnel/garage. Otherwise you should expect noticeable settlement/sag/cracking along that side of your house.
This is why he’s a handyman and not an engineer. Dudes putting his neighborhood in danger for views

@@Courtesyflush52 handyman is quite the downlplay to the guys fabrication experience.
Also the likelihood of sagging onto a concrete superstructure below the house seems minimal, I may be a lowly engineer, and not the right variety, but my inclination would be that if the house sags minimally on a height of soil, it’s also going to sag minimally on a sandwich of concrete, steel, and soil.
That being said he’s dumb for not wearing a hard hat. I’m sure he’s consulted with a few structural engineers at some points during this process, it would be more than dumb to just guess your way into a tunnel network of this size and scale without so much as a secondary look.

made a long prior comment about the marine use of cement washing steel for water tanks a century or so ago - when repairing a ferro cement boat there is an additive - pva glue 'like' product adhesive. i previously mentioned the aluminium trioxide used also - Al 2 O6 - there in NZ the is a water proofing agent also. w r t the 'pva like adhesive' when sticking new to old the 1:7 glue to water is used for mixing the concrete / plaster and a 1:1 mix painted on the dry old areas for adhesion such that it does not dry out before the new pour - different in your situation as keeping the old area moist while the new is poured would be real awkward. as prev noted a ferro-cement boat hull is approx 16mm thick - cement and sand - and our one - bought in the UK got us home to NZ

I'm not an influencer. I don't actively influence the next generation. HE does and was still refusing to properly protect himself. I'm very thankful he at least showed the consequences of it, but he also just brushed it off like he didn't almost just get knocked out by a giant piece of pipe under his driveway. There's a fine line between "dangerous fun" and needless risk. He crossed that line and didn't acknowledge it.
I've been informed he's getting one for future episodes, though, which I am very relieved to hear. He seems to at least be taking our concerns for his influence seriously, even if he doesn't particularly see the benefit of protecting himself on the job.

@@winters4147 Many questions arise.. heating demands, maintenance requirements, radon levels, safety for children, taxation for square meters in some cases, building code violations etc. etc.
The value of the house is whatever someone would pay for it. It's hard to price something that is unique. It's not like there's a book of house pricing with a chapter titled "houses with underground bunkers".

Hey Colin, assuming you see this, a little tip for you. When concreting in your box, hammer rebar into the dirt barrier. This way when you start Phase 2 you have lots of rebar ties for the next area of concrete.

After that pipe incident I was hoping to finally see Colin wear a hard hat. The safety tie can only protect so much! Also, I'm not superstitious, but that milk bottle saying "safety first" and then Colin getting hit on the head with a pipe is definitely quite a coincidence.

Colin, for concern of safety for yourself, your family and your property is why I am saying this after years of watching your channel. I applaud your engineering efforts for making your home a more unique design AND as a Civil and Structural Engineer specialising in ground works / temp works I would be seriously remiss / negligent in asking you to PLEASE wear a safety helmet and or some protective gear like steel cap toes. These are not hard to obtain. By law even visitors to a Construction site are required to wear this basic PPE. I would also caution you never to cut walls direction under a foundation vertically without not considering the 45 degree zone of influence and load distribution. The issue of direct cutting can cause differential settlement which is a serious undermining condition.

Utterly Bonkers! I followed the initial build of the underground bunker and wondered what else he could possibly do to better that. No way did i expect another mahoosive project at home. Its such a plus that his house is built on such rock.
I can only imagine he is a source of amusement to those who live in the same vicinity.

He said in an earlier video he didn't ask for planning permission and the local council found out after he posted the video and it was already too late at that point

I cant even fathom how the submittal and approval process must have been to get this started. Such an amazing project.
Planning can be fairly easy, esspecially if neighbours don't issue any disputes and it's in a low traffic area not affecting public property, but apparently the first tunnel just got "permission to retain", which is to say, he dug it and then asked if he was allowed to, which is apparently a thing you are allowed to do.
Innovation is generally frowned upon. I am amazed they didnt make him fill it in. Although....He probably has celebrity status in his town by now. Making it a smidge easier :)
@@jsmythib The ONLY reason they allowed him to keep it is because the internet would have destroyed the local council's reputation if they said he had to fill it in. Moral of the story, before you do something make you're famous enough to get away with it haha

I think the scariest part about all this is making sure the house's foundation doesn't sink at all.
well he has reinforced it all with concrete and solid steel (the tunnels, rooms and whatnot) and that dirt looks super dense full of hard rock.
I'm not an engineer but just using all the common sense i have i feel safe to say that the foundation will hold its own just fine. : )
I am a civil/environmental engineer, the natural ground where he is building is clearly extremely strong, and the tunnel will not hurt the structural integrity as he has built it. The only concern would be ensuring very high compaction anywhere that he is not reinforcing with concrete if he is to place some material back.
@@Maine_Grease_Monkeywell he did get it inspected after he finished the tunnel and got it cleared, well once the council found out about it. Can't see how he could take the next step without it being legal.
HAHa, in America we do what's illegal and dont tell the council. We're supposed to get permits to build internal walls and such. Many just build the wall. @@youtubeSuckssNow
I'm not worried about what he's building and how solid everything will be once he's done. In the long term, things will likely be fine. I'm worried about the digging process. Having a large hole made and leaving it like that for weeks at a time where there's nothing holding the dirt / rocks back during that time, allows the ground to swell into the hole during that time which is very bad for a foundation of a house or garage.
I haven't finished the video yet, but I'm hoping you're planning on having fog machines blast the Delorean when you're raising it out of the ground.

Maybe it could trickle fuel onto the road behind the tires to leave burning tracks like in the movie. And that also kinda sounds like a bomb so probably not a good idea.

I'd love a video after all of this is said and done, about the logistics, codes compliance, permitting, etc. The fact that you're being allowed to do something this awesome in a residential? neighborhood is amazing and I can't imagine all of the background headaches that this project is certainly causing.

He ruined his house, FYI. It won't show immediately, but long-term. Because he undermined the edges of the foundation on both his house and garage, those columns will begin to settle and shift horizontally until the house literally falls apart. If he'd simply moved the edge of that room forwards a couple more feet to clear the foundations he'd have been fine, but no, he ruined it.

Your kids are so lucky y'know, not cause of all the cool stuff you've built but because of your enthusiasm around it, willingness to share what you're doing and allowing others to help out if they want to. They have the perfect stepping stone to get into the exact same kind of stuff you're doing right now, which is an incredible toolset for someone to have from a young age.
Hoping you are thinking about putting tubes around all of the piping and cabling into the house before pouring concrete over them. That way if there was an issue, you would have an easier time pulling those out and replacing them.

I’d say rock aggregate around the utilities. Either that, or have the utilities inside the room just at the ceiling height. With penetrations on either end. It would be kind of cool to expose the utilities in the room.

Hey Colin, i work with paints. You were looking at rust prevention options. Have you looked into PENETROL ? it is made by an American based company and owned by P.P.G . It absorbs into steel 4 times deeper than any rust converter, surround any rust molecule to stop oxygen getting into the steel and reduces risk of the oxidisation process. It may be worth a look as a treatment for the steel. It can also be used as a primer for epoxy enamel metal paints 24 hrs after application. Hope this helps.
