This is the best sequence of moves in basketball history. He easily passed a defender. Then he spinned a way from a double team. Then he dunks on 7 ft Patrick Ewing. He's the most smooth/fluid basketball player ever.
Incorrect. Oakley was never easy to beat; not off the dribble or when the bassline was sealed. Mike dribbled and picked up left-handed. He said Scottie showed him a lot of left-handed basketball but he couldn't dunk as well southpaw as Scottie-Mo. It's also worth note that Starks was a hard-nosed on-ball defender in the same frame as Gary Payton and MJ escaped what should've been a corner trap. That is why it was so impressive
@@GuerillaWarFairness No one said Oakley was easy to beat, the guy said Jordan just did it easily. Don't misunderstand it as saying Oakley was easy, he just meant Jordan made it look easy.
Honestly are plays on two different planets Jordan moved very fast and escaped a ankle breaked a double team in a minimum space then posterized Ewing and got a faul. It's a much much more difficult play, it's not just the slam dunk
The way he burns the double team, just like that, makes it look a easy... a true wizard. The dunk is great but the real beauty of this play is how he gets in that position to dunk after being seemingly trapped
This is why Jordan is the goat. Shook a whole team and posterized their defensive anchor. All while playing against some of the most physical defense the league ever saw.
This is Jordan’s best play, because it shows how athletic he was. In this play the guy could have been a wide receiver juking some defensive player. Favorite Play of All Time!!!
Not only his athleticism, but his skill. Many players in NBA history had the athleticism to jump out the gym and do athletic feats most of us can’t sniff. But how many of them could use that Athleticism like Jordan could?
I started the 90's in Middle School and they end right after I graduated High School. Best thing I can tell young NBA fans today is the Bulls - Knicks in the 90's was LEGIT Ali- Frazier. Best way to describe that rivalry in the playoffs back in those days.
This play is so sick cuz no matter what this play is a highlight. The move to get free without the dunk could be a highlight. Obviously the dunk without the move would be a highlight. But the move with the dunk makes it so sick.
I have to revisit this one once in a while. To me it was the greatest dunk ever because of the message it sent. The Knicks were a brutally physical team and they had pushed some of the other Bulls around a bit but Jordan was always ready to go to war with anyone. The move, the dunk and the stare. Jordan was not only the greatest player in the league he was the baddest man on the planet.
For all the haters always saying he only has to play people 1 v 1 in that era…why do most of Jordan’s highlights have him being defended by 3 of 4 different defenders on one play? 😂
This is hard nose basketball Ewing can up short alot but I would love to have a Dog like him on my team and Giannis too those guys never give up on plays if they get on poster they don't care at all and I respect it
The complexity and the timing of the movement makes this one of the most beatiful moves in sports history, not just basketball. I guess this moment is one of those when some great cosmic forces join at one place, one mind and a pure miracle happens in front of everyone......and btw I still cannot explain to myself what was Oakley thinking when he pushed away Jackson with his left hand.
Well said. Oakley pushed Jackson (Starks) in the direction he THOUGHT Jordan was going. Backfired on him to say the least lol. Also it was Starks that Oakley pushed not Jackson.
I love watching Phil Jackson that whole play, he was sittin there calm n cool, but once jordan had the ball, u see phil jumpin in his seat, once jordan did the spin move tho, and soon as jordan dunks it, phil wanted to stand and cheer himself but he had to stay composed
There is a super slow motion shot of this play from a different, more close up angle. Find that shot in slow mtion because it show Ewing and Jordan elevating. Ewing hit his peak as Mike does. Ewing starts to drop and Mike looks like he impossibly starts elevating again. Its optics, but looks incredible.
It's not often that the dunk on a Hall of Fame rival center in a playoff game isn't the most insane part of a highlight. It is legendary. It is impressive. But even better is... The spin move! You ever played air hockey? MJ looks like the puck! You can't convince me his feet are actually touching the floor here, it's ridiculous. This is frictionless movement! This is gliding on a bed of air! This is unpossible! Au contraire, Mr. Ewing. Now enjoy the main course.
I miss hearing Johhny "Red" Kerr calling those Jordan era Bulls games. I was lucky to be 10 years old when Michael came into the league and to have Chicago Sports Channel so I got to see it all.
That's my favorite part too. I forgot that was the second time Ewing got posterized in that game, both in the first half! The Bulls owned the Knicks in Jordan era 90s.
I never realized how tightly NY was pressing them on that play. They were swarming all over the Bulls. Most highlight clips only start showing this play when Jordan starts going baseline.
I'm from Chicago, and what's funny is back when the 90's Bulls and Knicks would clash in the playoffs, I would randomly dial 212 numbers before the series started and tease New Yorkers about that ass whuppin that was coming, and they all laughed and agreed with me
Eastern Conference Playoffs, back when the game was physical. Every single possession was intense unlike today’s game. You can see it here, full court press, double team. Knicks wouldn’t let you in the lane without knocking you on your ass. Then that happened.
I love MJ and I might not have watched his games even though I grew up during the 90s, but I love the electricity he brings when I watch his highlights. Even the commentators make it so alive with their commentary.
I was 14 watching this game and what gets me is he got the AND 1 !!!! MJ would KILL the NBA today. There isn't ANYBODY in the paint who'd keep keep away from the rim now. He getting a EASY 50ppg 💯
I NEVER get enough of this. Then, now, til the day I die, I yell: 'Ooooh Hoo Hoo HOOOOOOO, O my Gooooooodness. Get yo behind DOWN Pat Ewing!!!!!!!!!!'😲😲😲😁😂🤣
Bc of his speed and quickness he not only could get by and create space but it allowed him to manipulate the defender bc he had to bite on every move. Otherwise hes gone. Other guys could fake and jab all day and it meant nothing bc u know u can recover.
This play from Jordan, and when kobe did the around the back reverse dunk on Parker are probably the cleanest displays of footwork I’ve ever seen on a basketball court.
techotopo artistic? Maybe the move before the dunk but MJ dunked the shit outta that ball. Pippens dunk was famous more for what he did after the dunk. IMO
First time I saw this, I literally thought MJ turned into a ghost and made the dunk. Like, how’d he get through that??? Definitely worth watching over and over again
This is the illest move in basketball history who agree?
My favortie move all time hands down
I agree...... It's the footwork OMG
Definitely
Rief Smith sane thing here
The lay up against the Nets when he triple pumped the ball. He was in the air for 5 minutes

TWO double teams, actually.
Oakley pushed Starks and didn’t close off the lane bad defense or help defense 😂

Oakley helped by pushing his own team mate out of his buddy Jordan’s way and didn’t close off the lane

Michael Jordan really made basketball like poetry in motion
That's the word I think of when I watch this play POETRY
This is Jordan’s best play, because it shows how athletic he was. In this play the guy could have been a wide receiver juking some defensive player. Favorite Play of All Time!!!
It showed both his basketball IQ and athleticism. How quickly he saw that double team and quickly decide what to do is god tier.
Not only his athleticism, but his skill. Many players in NBA history had the athleticism to jump out the gym and do athletic feats most of us can’t sniff. But how many of them could use that Athleticism like Jordan could?

Poor Ewing...........Pippen posterized him earlier in that game. Many people forget just how brutal the Bulls/Knicks playoff rivalry was.

Oakley pushed Jackson (Starks) in the direction he THOUGHT Jordan was going. Backfired on him to say the least lol.
