I'm pretty sure I had a VHS of Max Fleischer's Superman that had this short included on it. I can't verify which version it was that had it, but I'm pretty sure that's where I saw this originally in the 80's. I'm sure it's also included with other compilations of his shorts as well.
Watched this in NYC 1960's , it was on alot in the late 1950's and early 1960's. We all watched it in B/W in those years, it was one of those cartoons you never forget, like '' I love to singa '' another classic. Just type it in ,and enjoy it.
I used to watch this all the time when I was really young and its been about ten years and I found myself singing the song. Watching this now made me tear up
My Grandma had a tape where they put old Max Fleischer cartoons to Beatles music. This was the cartoon where they made the music video to "Let it Be"! I have no idea if she still has the tape or not, but I've been wanting to see the original cartoon for years! And here it is!
I have this cartoon on a yellow VHS called "Fabulous Cartoon Funnies" that is 6 hours long. It has other cartoons like 'An Elephant Never Forgets' , 'All's Fair at the Fair', 'Gabby' and practically all of those in the related section ------->.
I haven't seen this in maybe 12 years. I don't know what made me think of it now. I like how the faucet is attached to string & it just directs the water down..... that's some logic!
It may be politcally incorrect, but so is this world. These kind of cartoons need to come back to show kids what happens when they don't listen to their parents. I LOVE SMALL FRY!!!
Someone here is fascinated by the ability to smoke under water... I'm fascinated by the ability to wash their hands with running water from a tap... Well, actually, no. I'm fascinated by this really cute cartoon. Poor Small Fry. :)
Of all the bargain bin classic cartoon tapes I was raised by, this was my favourite! Well, of the ten or so I've been reminded of lately. There may lbe another contender lost in the fog. Thanks, @junoluver . You've done a good thing with these uploads!
I read online that Jack Mercer was Small Fry's voice. He lived January 13, 1910 - December 4, 1984 and was an American animator, storyman and voice actor. He is best known as the voice of cartoon character Popeye. He info is on wikipedia...
Oh Man. I remember enjoying this and singing the song "Small Fry" to myself even decades later. I must be a fish or something... (Classic tune....classic cartoon)
Every kid in the early 1960's saw this one on tv , but in b/w, unless you were rich and could afford a color set in those days. And even if you had a color set , you probably still watched this one in b/w, only a few stations had color programs. First time ive seen this in color for 50 years!
"To get one's feet all soaking wet" means Small Fry ended up seeing things he had no business seeing, especially at his young age. Even the members of The Big Fry Club think Small Fry is way too young to engage in what they do. When the people you idolize or try to emulate say you're in over your head, believe them the first time around. It's also in the same vein of this one: when people show you what they are, believe them the first time around.
It's because the members of The Big Fry Club were once like Small Fry, and they know he's not ready for what he experiences at The Big Fry Club's Meeting.
I haven't seen this in 29 years. I decided to look for it today (10.3.19) and here it is. Thanks for posting, now I can sing it with all the right words. BTW all of Fleischer's cartoons were great, but I'm partial to this one...touches the heart.
@bleuwinterwolf Hah! Glad to be of service! (Extra info: BOY MEETS DOG was originally made as a commercial film for toothpaste-thus all the tooth care references. Lantz also issued a "non-commercial" version, though, which is the one we see today; actual plugs for toothpaste removed, but an unusual focus on teeth remaining in an otherwise unrelated story!
Small fry, struttin by the pool room Small fry, should be in the school room My, my put down that cigarette You ain't grown up high and mighty yet Small fry, dancin for a penny Small fry, countin up how many My, my just listen here to me You ain't the biggest catfish in the sea You practice peckin all day long to some old radio song
Those might be specially-made cigs made for fish. If "Small Fry" were made today, though, we would not see the cigs at all. And the members of The Big Fry Club were once very much like Small Fry, and even they know Small Fry is not ready for what he sees during their meeting.
i remember i had this no tape, small fry reminds me of me when i was little, wanna do things like being one of the big boys hanging around with grown men do things dey do.i learrn the hard way just him and i ran home just like him and give my mother a big ol hug and a kiss saying i'm sorry i be a good boy

Oh my God! Been looking for this forever! Thought I was the only one! Childhood restored.

I Love this cartoon, I used to watch it every day.

Love that they're fish but walk on their little legs
That's how real-life mudskippers move around on land before going back into the water.
I have this cartoon on a yellow VHS called "Fabulous Cartoon Funnies" that is 6 hours long. It has other cartoons like 'An Elephant Never Forgets' , 'All's Fair at the Fair', 'Gabby' and practically all of those in the related section ------->.
"Junior's gonna get it, Junior's gonna get it!" Favorite part!
I wore this out as a kid! Memories man
I haven't seen this in maybe 12 years. I don't know what made me think of it now.
I like how the faucet is attached to string & it just directs the water down..... that's some logic!
It's funny that all the kids i grew up with were watching things like The SImpsons and I was watching this stuff my parents's childhood
It may be politcally incorrect, but so is this world. These kind of cartoons need to come back to show kids what happens when they don't listen to their parents. I LOVE SMALL FRY!!!
I love this video-so do my children! It is such a great classic-so memorable.
Fantastic. i can remember my childhood days watching this through vcr.
I can't believe I found this, best Christmas gift ever!

I totally remember watching this as a kid! Thanks for posting
I watched this myriad times on TV as a child and always remember it. Great to see it again!
Lol I remember this cartoon, I had it taped on video and would watch it constantly. Ah... so cute :)
Oh Man. I remember enjoying this and singing the song "Small Fry" to myself even decades later. I must be a fish or something... (Classic tune....classic cartoon)

I'll always remember this one! Thanks for uploading. #childhoodmemories
ROFL...I had this on a tape too as a kid...me and my bro loved it
If Sponagebob was made 1930...
The song "Small Fry" was a Top 10 hit in two versions in 1938: one by Mildred Bailey (#9) and the other by Bing Crosby & Johnny Mercer (#3).
THANKS SO MUCH for posting this!! Was hoping it would turn up here :)
this cartoon is funnier than many cartoons today
I used to be scared of this one because I would watch it on VHS in the dark.
It's because the members of The Big Fry Club were once like Small Fry, and they know he's not ready for what he experiences at The Big Fry Club's Meeting.
Me and my sister loved this growing up
Still watching this almost 11 years later since it was posted! Timeless!
I grew up watching thi on VHS and now I sing it to my kids. I never knew it was from 1939!!
The guy at the beginning with the pool cue scratched and was happy about it. Just pointing that out.

I haven't seen this in 29 years. I decided to look for it today (10.3.19) and here it is. Thanks for posting, now I can sing it with all the right words. BTW all of Fleischer's cartoons were great, but I'm partial to this one...touches the heart.

Thanks for posting! Good cartoon!
Love this one too! Had it on a VHS too!
Just superb in ideas and execution.
I wonder how is it possible for Junior to smoke a cigarette (along with the adult male fish) underwater?
Those were specially-made cigarettes made for underwater.
JUNIORS GUNNA GET IT. JUNIORS GUNNA GET IT
Me too. I wasn't that little but we bought it for my sister. Mary's Little Lamb was also on that tape.

"Oh me, oh my, small fry"
It is so easy to get that one line stuck in your head. xD
My mom still have this on VHS somewhere in storage 😍❤.
Yeah. I wish this cartoon could be available on digital video because it's nearly impossible to find a working VHS VCR nowadays.
Memories 😭
Feels good seeing this again it reminds me of my youth
The theme song is by Hoagy Carmarchael.
Ah the memories! So awesome...

In Field & Scream, an MGM cartoon, at one point they show fire in the water.
I love how all the tough fish have bowlers
Every one knows this cartoon ended up in Disney's "the fabulous fleischer folio" Volume 1 in 1983.
the cigs works underwater?! that only raises MORE questions!! ;p
Those might be specially-made cigs made for fish.
If "Small Fry" were made today, though, we would not see the cigs at all.
And the members of The Big Fry Club were once very much like Small Fry, and even they know Small Fry is not ready for what he sees during their meeting.
Thank you so much for posting this!!!!
The lesson learnt by Small Fry: instead of hanging around with bigger fish, go beat up the kid that snitched on you!
i remember i had this no tape, small fry reminds me of me when i was little, wanna do things like being one of the big boys hanging around with grown men do things dey do.i learrn the hard way just him and i ran home just like him and give my mother a big ol hug and a kiss saying i'm sorry i be a good boy
Incidentally, Junior (the "Small Fry") is voiced by "Popeye", Jack Mercer.
