The first documented usage of "grenade" (the word) to describe the explosives i could find is in french in a book wrote in 1558 by philippe de clèves. They came to english usage (as "grenades") around 1579 seems like. At the time bows were already a bit overdue, and guns were very much already a thing so the setting is indeed wrong if you really care at all. Though who would really care ? In the end they're called grenades cause the general public can identify that pretty quickly, and PoE isn't really known for realism, boasting 20 bolts/s crossbows (chukonus existed but weren't that busted lmfao)
That was captain nerd for you

if the dude arguing about grenades was talking about greek fire, I think he was really trying to stretch the argument, ngl, if that's so then fire arrows are explosive ammo too, why not... ppl arguing like that should start with definitions to avoid misinterpreting the discussion

That's not stretching the argument, greek fire thrown in a pot is in fact a grenade.

y'all don't know about Naffatun throwing jars of naphtha. I'm talking medieval grenades, they just weren't called grenades back then.

also, explosive flask already exists on pathfinder

They were called negrades back then.
I know how nearly offensive that made up word is, but I stand by it.

Naphtha grenades & Greek fire napalm were also of the dark ages & earlier, not just available in the medieval era.
ETA: Put some pitch in a jar & launch it & you also have a tar patch to ignire with fire arrows too.
The Byzantines had grenades, not the earlier Romans, but it was still technically the time of the Roman empire - as it was dying out & the Byzantines took it over. They considered themselves part of the Roman empire, not another invading group who wanted to wipe them out.

I love the discussion going on involving grenades in a fantasy world while he's controlling a girl shooting darts into a demons ass and a Russians ass while a lava monster and two angry Japanese guys try to kill him😂

Greek fire is a pretty well known weapon of war. Yes grenades did exist in ancient times.

the crossbow and ak argument was goofy as f.
also the fact that they didn't call it grenades back then, doesn't change the fact that it was an actual grenade.
The fact that a horse cart wasn't being referred to as a "vehicle" back in ancient Rome, doesn't change the fact that it's an actual vehicle.

i mean you can just look it up. granades as their definition says, was invented around 15th century, horse cart doesnt make much sense to refer to, much more like cart vs caravan maybe, not mean to start war here:)
