Ratchet was way more interesting in PS2. He wasnt a massive Qwark fanboy, that however was Clank. But Ratchet was more smarter and cynical. I always felt Ratchet and Clank 1-3 was aimed towards kids and teenagers. But ever since "A Crack in Time" game, it has been mainly aimed at just kids in general. It just lost that edge and so did the design aswell
A crack in time was kinda hard tho when I was a kid imo
I had the same thought at first but you have to keep in mind that this play through is told through the lense of Cpt Quark so certain things like that get embellished
Even then a crack in time had a pretty heavy story. Ratchet kills the last tie he has to his race, but it feels so wrong
@@plexyglass429 And he actually dies. Not permanently, but it does happen. It's quite dramatic. I liked seeing that conflict between him and Alister. Alister was so bent on saving his race. But the Future series was much better than the forgettable R&C movie and tie-in game. The game is still very fun gameplay wise, having some of the best mechanics and gameplay of recent R&C games. It's just that the story...kinda sucks:/
And the movie was geared towards kids. I think it was Sony's decision to target kids with the latest R&C games though, in an attempt to expand the franchise's audience. The humor though funny is still a bit too over-the-top imo, and this is especially the case from Into the Nexus onward. They should tone it down a bit. It's too in-your-face at times, and it can kinda feel cringe. There's always someone talking on-screen while you're playing, like they have to hold your attention every few minutes or so.
Rift apart on the PS5 is definitely a return to form and has references to the first game. It was awesome I put it right under the first 4 games on the PS2 (includes deadlocked)
I'm just going to put it out there; 2002 Ratchet would shoot a man dead on the street for threatening Clank. 2016 Ratchet would try to laugh and be too quirky/cowardly to save Clank from anything lol.
It's actually not a remake at all.
The 2016" Remake " as everyone is calling is in actuality the story of a holofilm based on the events of the first game told by a former Captian to his cellmate.
This is proven by the line " They are making a game , based off a holofilm , based off my life ?!?!".
The holofilm is the movie that was released in 2016.
The "Game" is the game based off said film . We are playing that game in the 2016 version it just has quarks storytelling being narrated over it.
Keep in mind Quark has been in jail and is very full of himself. So being Quark he tells a extremely exaggerated version of the first games story with stuff added in by his cell mate who has seen the holofilm .
The entirety of the 2016 version is just Quark being Quark telling a huge story.
Parts he doesn't know he just makes up or its added in by his cellmate who has watched the holofilm and thus is not a reboot at all ! Don't hate on it love Quark XD

Like you're not wrong. Yes, in the fiction of this world, the game we're playing is apparently an actual game in said world.
But in OUR world, it's a remake, or reboot. I'd go with reboot since it's rebooting the francise in a way, chucking out anything they don't like about the original titles in order to start a new story. One where Ratchet is a nervous little tripe and Clank is boring af... But like whatever. The original games still exist. But this remake/reboot, whatever you want to call it, really just feels like a corporate, soulless cash grab. In other words, it stands in opposition to the themes of the classic games.

I hated Qwark in 2002 and I hate him today. Having him narrating anything is so annoying.
Or how about this... the 2016 movie and ps4 game are both from different universe from the game timeline and nothing more. like, why can't we see it as that?

Honestly, my probably biggest gripe about the game. If they're gonna give Ratchet armor in this game, why didn't they just have optional armor upgrades mainly either for skill issue purposes or design purposes. At least when you collect enough gold bolts you can change the design of the armor to PRESET color palettes.

I was a little thrown off at first but then really liked you style.
I am one that never played the original so this was my first experience. You were right in hoping that this was able to do well enough for the new to R&C to make them want more of the series. I agree with a lot of what you said with your analysis but it still brings fond memories for me and makes me want it to be better in seeing what it was and could be.
This is a non canon game it's literally basically flat out said qwark is telling a dtory kinda like in the holavid comics hes in the bathroom in one but its said he defeated the amoboids but in truth ratchet and clank did the fighting and the fact he took credit in 3 for defeating the queen that ratchet and clank actually fought hes a known lier it's a tall tale from qwark thats what this game is
i think the reboot is a VERY fun game, maybe even more so than the original, but yeah the story and cutscenes are bottom tier. Even secret agent clank has better story and character.

It just looks bad in general, The PS2 And PS3 and PSP are better
The gameplay was good, but the plot and personality of all the characters had the depth of tracing paper- a huge step back for series.
I know it was just to tie in with the movies, but they can do better than that. The dialogue was so dumbed down thst parts of it like Skidd Mcmarxx and the Gadgetron CEO were painful to listen to.
Ratchet and Clank themselves also had no personality whatsoever

it was ALRIGHT but i mean could have been wayy better. Me personally i did not experience any glitches or anything but even if this game sucked rift apart made up for it

Fun gameplay and great graphics are the only positives imo. They ruined it with the bland, pandering garbage story, constant talking, and emotionless cutscenes. I blame the movie for the story being so bad. Rift apart is much better but nothing will beat the OG trilogy. Wish they would’ve just remade the 1st game with these graphics and gameplay and changed nothing with the story.

If it were just called "Ratchet & Clank: Qwarktastic" or so. I would just say, OK. Really low Budget RaC but OK.
But now, it says, hey I am your beloved PS2 Game in Larger, bigger and better, but it is the opposite. It is really the OG Game. The OG Game was Platformer Fist and Shooter Second. This Game is Shooter First Platformer Second.
This is the reason for the hate.
I have to play It, but thous far i understand, they 're trying to make a game based on a movie on a short time.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: Hey everyone, hope your holiday season's safe and jolly! Just wanted to update that everything below is still relevant, but I wanted to add that it looks like the Rift Apart video will be a January release. It's had more than a few rewrites and restructurings, but I'm pretty pleased with the current skeleton and am working every day to get it out soon! Also, I do have a video planned for talking about my personal 2021 GotY, but I can't say yet if it'll be ready before or after Rift Apart, which is my main concern given how long it's taken! Hey everyone, is Scott! Since I'm not yet a big enough channel to have a Community tab, I thought I'd hijack the pinned comment of this video to address the obvious question going around: when the heck is the Rift Apart video coming? Short (and probably obvious) answer? It's coming, but it's gonna be a while longer! The Rift Apart analysis/critique has become a FAR bigger video than I had anticipated! In fact, with current prospects, it's due to be a longer video than even 'The Last of Us Part II Actually Sucks'... yikes...
This has been a super difficult video to script and put together, I'll say that. I'm trying to balance thinking about the game on its own merits, while this time embracing the (unfavorable, spoiler alert) comparisons to previous games, all while balancing real-life responsibilities in the background since, y'know, I can't make a job of this quite yet. It's gonna be at least another month before it goes up, and I'm sorry about that! I do feel really bad to leave such a long gap between releases, so I've been considering tossing out a smaller / different video or two to entertain you in the meantime, either compiling all previous Ratchet videos in one, or maybe pulling from stream highlights, I dunno, still thinking about it. If you see this, lemme know what you think.

If this is your first RaC then yeah, you could be impressed.
But if you are a long time fan, then you think yeah, this is the real basics of a modern RaC. Where is the stuff that makes it stand out? (Graphics don't count, RaC1, ToD all were awesome for it's time. But with Rift Apart you can't really say this is the best, if you even like the Artstyle in the first place)
It has nothing to stand out. And if you play this Game, you have 0 idea how the OG Game is. Even when it is a reimagining, I think you should have a feeling for how the old game was. This Game is a entirely different Genre.
