I've adored the Ratchet and Clank series since 2002 which is exactly why I give Rift Apart some tough love. I wanted to highlight how I felt it missed the mark while also praising what I felt it did incredibly well - hopefully that came across in the video.
While I really enjoyed what I enjoyed of Rift Apart, in the end, I feel it shares a similar skewed uncanny representation of the R&C characters we know and love as seen in the reboot (maybe just not as dramatic). Though it may not depict the characters as diverse as they used to be, these may be versions you love, which despite how I feel, makes me glad they're still around.
...plus I just really love Ratchet and Clank

I just played Tools of Desctruction the other day and was shocked at how much variety there was; I never thought of such variety back in the day and took it for granted. To start, there is the helipack/thrusterpack, the swimming, gelatonium, cliff climbing, button timing, clank zoni levels, battles with cronk and zephyr, ball puzzles, magnetic walls, the mukow challenge arena, pirate dancing, leviathan soul hunting, flying sections, and much more. It’s actually kind of insane.

"What makes these characters already perfect is that they're imperfect."
You hit the nail on the head, explaining what both Insomniac and their critics in the past failed to grasp. Before I continue, I want to respond to your point about the characters being made to fit the story. First off, as a writer, I believe that it is entirely possible to write a character in accordance to the plot; it just requires care and precision. Second, and more importantly, the shallowness of the characters is not a consequence of the story.
It's a consequence of Ratchet and Clank 1.
Critics HATED Ratchet in the first game, due to how bitter he was towards Clank in the second half of the game. This backlash hurt Insomniac hard. So hard that they changed his voice actor for the first, and only, time in the series, something that has never happened with any of the other major characters (except for the big green elephant in the room recently). Over the course of the franchise, they've been gradually pulling back Ratchet's "jerkish" traits, and the final nail of the coffin was 2016, where their fears of the Ratchet-backlash came back with a vengeance, and Nice Ratchet is here to stay.
This is why Rivet and Ratchet can't stay mad at each other without tripping over themselves to apologize. This is why Rivet had to draw attention to the fact that she still wanted to save Kit despite her personal reasons for fearing her.
Until Insomniac - and the critics of the past - understands that character flaws are good, this is what we're gonna have.
On a side note, you misunderstood the continuity; Rift Apart is a sequel to 2016 AND Into the Nexus, so as to appeal to both, and Insomniac is quietly removing R&C 1 from the canon and replacing it with 2016. In other words, it's to be assumed that everything from 2 onwards happened, but 2016 is the start. That comes with its own share of issues, but not the ones you listed.

Thanks for the great insight! I didn't know that was the reason they changed VAs for Ratchet and always wondered. Now it makes even more sense why they wanted a reboot of the first game. It's a shame too because they had the courage to do something with the protagonists that not many wanted to or did do back then, especially given the target audience.

But wait... that would only apply to games past Ratchet and Clank 1 right? But Ratchet is still a cocky gunner adventure type protagonist in the PS2 games, just less of an asshole to Clank. There is a definite response to tone down Ratchet's less appealing qualities, but it felt measured and deliberate in the PS2 era while still maintaining some of the edge.
In RaC 2 the assholeness is explained away by Ratchet learning his lesson in the first game and his crash course in Megacorp's commando training. He is still a bit of an overconfident jerk, but more directed at the crappy situation he finds himself in rather than exclusively at Clank/Quark. In a way, RaC 2 fixes Ratchet's character by redirecting his anger away from people/things that the players would side with and turning it against things the players (theoretically) would also feel pissed off at. The computer charging bolts for access is a good example
RaC 3 still had Ratchet as a sarcastic jerk (but slightly less so), but his aggression is directed at the Qforce and how the universe treats him like crap. But the game also shows how much he's matured, since he is willing to step out of the limelight for the good of the galaxy (cooperating with Qforce) and for his friend (letting Clank be the superstar even though they both work as a team to save the day).
Ratchet Deadlocked feels like the last time Ratchet felt like himself to me. In it he is excited at the promise of fame, glory, and women by being a gladiator. Up until karma hits him and nearly kills Al. It's also the last time we really see the consumerism/capitalism themes.
If anything, the Future series was when the decline of RaC story and characters started. For me at least. It shaved down the negative aspects of the characters until we reached the modern conclusion of how vanilla they all turned out to be. It introduced the origin stories of Ratchet and Clank which hamstrings them unto a predetermined role as good boy saviors of the galaxy, and not the scrapyard hillbilly mechanic and defective warbot underdogs that made them so charming. The goal of 'Pixar like real time graphics during gameplay' feels like a monkey paw wish, it was achieved, but at what cost?

    • @GameCat16
      @GameCat16 2 года назад +8

@@konkonart7128 I disagree on the Future Saga. The Future Saga actually brought back some of the depth that Ratchet lost between 1 and 2. While you are correct that Ratchet still maintained some of his faults (sarcasm, cockiness), the truth is, he didn't have much of an arc.
In 2, Ratchet went through a bit of a crisis where he was becoming Qwark (with him playing the role in 2 that Qwark played in 1), but there wasn't much in the way of Ratchet making any serious mistakes; he just cot conned by a villain. In 3, neither he nor Clank had any arc, as it was passed off to Qwark. And in Deadlocked, Ratchet was more showcasing how much he learned (as far as the dichotomy of heroism and capitalism is concerned, anyway).
In Tools of Destruction, however, Ratchet finally got a significant flaw again; his obsession with finding his family. This drove him to lash out at Clank and prioritize protecting a device that Clank warned him could cause their destruction. The story is about him slowly realizing what his real family is, with A Crack in Time and Nexus building off of that with Ratchet's relationships to Azimuth and Vendra, respectively. The only mistake Insomniac made was intertwining that arc with skepticism of the Zoni, but that's beside the point.
When they got to work on the remake, their fears of a Ratchet backlash came back, and they doubled down on the changes they started implementing in 2 onwards, especially after some people (like Tealgamemaster, with all due respect) expressed frustration with Ratchet's being flawed again in ToD.
The Future Saga brought back Ratchet's depth, say what you will for some of its other decisions. They just couldn't commit.

Yeah the backlash was pretty strong. There's a scene in Going Commando on planet Barlow where a biker threatens Clank and Ratchet gets INFURIATED; he was going to murder him on the spot.
That scene, plus the change in VAs was Insomniac showing that Ratchet is no longer the type to mistreat Clank. While they did sand out his abrasiveness as the games went on, their goal was always to distance Ratchet from his original characterization.

I have seen many video essays to know that the ps3 and ps2 games have become two entirely different beasts. Rift Apart set itself to continue from the ps3 games which reinforces Insomniac's instistance to distance themselves from the ps2 era with the exception of a couple references which were probably there to satisfy ps2 fans. I also listened to a podcast where the lead writer mentioned that it was their first time writing for Ratchet and that they wanted to target new fans, which seems to be the majority of players from what I've seen. The way I see it, the story's intent was to re-establish the story of the ps3 games for new players since the remake was still pretty fresh on their minds. Therefore, the story ended up being limited because of that i guess. However I am confident that Rift Apart's ending could imply something much more ambitious/different for the next full game. It wouldn't surprise me if perhaps a dlc/spinoff could happen in the meantime.

i realized one thing. The lack of a character like Big Al, whose main point in the story besides being the tech guy, was being mocked by Ratchet for his nerdiness, is probably a symptom of the more soft and safe writing of these later games. The main character should never make fun or shame anyone for being awkward or silly, not even someone who deserves it like Captain Qwark. Hell, compare the scenes involving Al in the orignal 2002 game and the 2016, it's like night and day.

This is a great point. There's still ways to do a snarky Ratchet, sort of like RC2&3. Qwark betrayed them in the first two games so there's definitely some space there for some really nice writing for Ratchet letting go of that haha

  • @ArcticWolf00Alpha0
    @ArcticWolf00Alpha0 2 года назад +22

I feel like one of the biggest problems with the Ratchet and Clank games of recent, especially Rift Apart, is that Ratchet as the main character doesn't go through anything anymore...he doesn't go on any different arcs or have anything of significance happen to him. One of the things every storytelling franchise has to do is have their character develop in some way by going through something whether it's good or bad. Ever since the end of the Future Saga, Ratchet has essentially been through the same crap every game, Hes faced some bad guy and he wins the day and everything's happily ever after. A4O was slightly different in concept but it didn't do much for Ratchet himself. Ratchet no longer has unique arcs that flush out his character and give him new concepts to explore, because of this his character has gotten into this rut where Hes always comes out the same way he came in. his character is just some happy generic good guy that never changes.
In my honest opinion, i feel like the only way they can further develop Ratchets character, is to have him suffer in some major way. Have him do something that is morally questionable and could send him off the edge, maybe a revenge quest or something. for example, what if Talwyn (Ratchets girlfriend) is killed in a terrorist attack that was carried out by a Lombax, say a rogue Lombax that knew of Ratchet's existence ever since the events of A Crack in Time. He could have watched Ratchet for some time and decided the Ratchet was weak and his will to protect the Galaxy is in question because Ratchet has become soft and he doesn't have the guts to kill his enemies and instead decides to simply apprehend and arrest them just so they can face justice when in reality they will come back and terrorize the universe again. You could have the Lombax challenge Ratchets will to do good or do what's necessary to protect those around him. Ratchet could slowly start to lose himself and he becomes more bloodthirsty and filled with vengeance as the story progresses, you could have Rivet and Clank try to help him and stop him from going down a dark and gritty path. Ratchet suffers greatly from the Lombax who succeeds in pushing him over the edge, and Ratchet starts to resent not only the rogue Lombax but also his entire species because of what happened, and he starts to push his own friends away as they try to stop him.
With small concepts like this they could develop Ratchet character more and we can see him suffer through something Hes never dealt with before. He can further his relationship with Rivet and we as an audience can be reassured that Ratchet is more than just some Hero and even he can fall off the edge if Hes pushed hard enough.
Bottom line Ratchet has to change. This current "Nice Ratchet" is really getting old and the story behind the games is suffering because of it.

This might be a bit of a controversial opinion. But I think the reason why Ratchet and Clank went down the wannabe Pixar route
Was because of the fanbase complaining about Ratchet Deadlocked.
Think about about it, Deadlocked was the last Rated Teen Ratchet game and it was the game that crank the edginess, darkness, AND critiques of consumerism to 11. Sure, I can understand that Deadlocked was a departure from the original formula but it was still a fantastic game in its own right and the fact that they made it on a super tight time crunch was quite impressive. Plus, Gleeman Vox was hands down one of the BEST villains in the entire series and no one can disagree with that fact. He abuses children to test his new toy line, captures heroes to put them in entertainment slave labor, and was willing to put his own audience in litteral danger just to boost TV ratings. He straight up didnt give a fuck and he was funny as hell. Its a shame that Insomniac recycles Nefarious like he is the new Dr.Eggman when they have made other fantastic villains like Vox for example.
But after the complaints of the darker direction of Deadlocked, that was when the series made a drastic shift in tone and themes. It was hinted with Size Matters but didnt take full circle until Tools Of Destruction.

I'm just gonna start off by saying this video is super underrated and deserves more views. Your editing, timing, and way of explaining your points are incredibly entertaining and I found myself rewinding to several bits that made me laugh. I legit snorted when you called the Emperor's assistant a "beautiful...generic...piece of shit", and let's be honest, where's the lie. I'd love to see another analysis like this sometime.
(Warning for a long, overly-speculative (and very salty) comment, I just had a lot to say after seeing how much your analysis describes my views on the game)
But yeah I agree with a lot of your points, especially in regards to Nefarious, Lawrence, and the Emperor. I was wary but interested when we got the trailer that revealed Nef was going to at least be *a* villain in the game, and with the whole alternate dimension thing I thought they were setting up something to contrast him and Emps, but by the end...
Me after seeing Nef get crushed at the end cause I legit thought they decided to kill him off before they went "sike" in the credits: *_Look how they massacred my boy_*
You hit the nail right on the head for pretty much all of your points, but since Nef is my fave I'm just gonna focus there cause acknowledging all the other issues would take an entire dissertation lmao. "Emperor Nefarious completely obliterates Dr. Nefarious and basically turns him into Igor. Which, if you're familiar with Nefarious, will completely and wholeheartedly irritate the living shit out of you." Put this on my grave, I have never heard a more accurate statement in my life. What happened to Nef in RA was a fucking *travesty* and Insomniac did him so dirty through the entire game.
He's just used as a tool in order to kickstart the plot, does absolutely nothing for the first half of the game, and is just shoved next to other characters like Emps and Rivet so the game can go "See how pathetic this scrap heap is? Isn't the Emperor such a competent and threatening villain even though he also does nothing of note for his half of the game? Isn't he so cool even though the heroes immediately and easily counteract any of his attacks despite him being supposed to have singlehandedly conquered his dimension?" I have many issues with Emps's writing too (I love Robin Atkin Downes and he deserved better material for his performance), but I digress.
I get that Nef's aesthetic is "Saturday morning cartoon villain" but as you said, he was never _incompetent_ throughout all of the games. Hell, in both UYA and ACiT he gets _extremely_ close to winning before the heroes are saved at the last second, and A4O has the greatest moment of Nef pimp slapping a ghost so hard it dies. Speaking of A4O, there are numerous scenes dedicated to showing Nef's technological prowess and there's also the fact that he helps save the galaxy by stopping the Loki Master. It felt like the writers just read a one-sentence summary of his character on Wikipedia and based his entire character in RA on that. Nef's problem isn't that he's weak, far from it if you actually take his every other mainline appearance into account (unlike this game did), it's that Ratchet and Clank are _stronger._ Really his main flaw is that he doesn't know when to quit, and I get that's probably what they were going for, but in execution, it just turns him into a useless imbecile. Seriously, there are way too many cutscenes where he just _stands_ there and straight up has _no_ lines of dialogue.
Not to mention that it seems like they turned cowardice into one of his main traits??? If he's not just angrily yelling at someone, he's cowering under them and apparently can't do jack shit without minions to help. And if we're going with Insomniac's "dimensional counterparts are the character's true self" thing, the fact that Emps's most prominent "hey he's not just an evil overlord" moments are him cowering at the sight of a warbot and him begging and bargaining for the same person he continuously abused to save him just makes it seem like that's what Insomniac was going for. I can't take Emps seriously as a villain no matter how much they shit on Nef to raise him up if I know he's a spineless bastard underneath it all before his breakdown at the end of the game. You know? When you're _supposed_ to see the villain at their lowest? It would've made more sense to take Nef's anger issues and focus on that by making it Emps's main vice, but that would require acknowledging his backstory from previous games so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The worst thing to come out of RA is that Nef's reputation is now "useless wannabe villain and Emps's personal bitch" in the eyes of the fandom, while the other half is calling for his death cause of how he's shoved into everything with continuously degrading writing (tbh I would've accepted him dying at the end if that meant he's put out of his misery). I hate the fact that Nef is written off as a "joke character" and I know I'm biased cause he's my fave, but he could easily be one of the most interesting and well-written characters if Insomniac actually gave him character development instead of just "haha funny robot". For all of A4O's gameplay flaws, I will always regard it as the best game for Nef's character because even with the more light-hearted and goofy tone, it still gave Nef moments to shine and interact with the heroes more than "I'm gonna defeat you", and it expanded his writing in a way I hoped RA would continue.
I was really hoping for a redemption arc because Insomniac had the perfect setup with the end of A4O, a more serious and threatening Nefarious, and saying that the game would impact the characters in ways no game had done before...and then RA utterly ripped that hope into shreds. Tbh, idk what would upset me more, Insomniac continuing to drag Nef along as the resident walking plot device or them deciding to pull some attempt at redemption after they let this (imo perfect) opportunity sail away. In the end, Insomniac just wanted to make the most easily digestible starter villain for newcomers at the expense of a longstanding and enjoyable character. Idrk how to end this off, but all I have to say is that Nef deserved better.
(Also, extra kudos to you for that bit about how outstanding the characters in Yakuza are because I ended up getting into a Yakuza phase in lieu of waiting for RA to come out, and after grieving over RA, all I could think about was "Yakuza treated me better than this" lol.)

I also assume Insomniac wants to keep Rivet and Kit in focus for the next game but with what we got here, I really can't bring myself to be excited, especially after seeing how the OG cast has suffered from being pushed to the side in favor of their counterparts who aren't really interesting character-wise as is.

I do miss how Ratchet and Clank used to be in their early days. They were honestly the perfect duo. But we haven't actually received good Ratchet games in a long, long time. That being said, Rift Apart is a whole lot better than the recent reboot and a lot of the later entries in the series, thats for sure. Despite the fact of how desensitized everything is, i do really enjoy its style and animation, would looove to see more games show up looking like this with a more mature take on a family friendly story!

    • @ScoutOW2

Plus when it came to Ratchet's portrail in the story. A part of me thought of how mature he acted compared to the early years was due to how much his grown, giving the torch to the more immature version of himself to have their own rivalry (like R&C had in their first game). Even though we're missing that Walter White and Jesse Pinkman push and pull that makes the moments of friendship feel worth it.

the moment that made me disappointed in this game was when Rivet was talking to Kit after busting everyone out of jail, I thought for a brief moment, that we could get a callback to the first game, with the two having a tough time together, and thus have time to grow as a duo, only for that to be crushed when it ends in like 15 seconds, and then we cut to the final boss. It felt like there was supposed to be a 2nd act where just like Ratchet and Clank in the first game, Rivet and Kit would have to resolve their personal problems, this would have been a great chance to give Ratchet and Clank a mentor role, as both would do their best to help out, given they went through this themselves, Ratchet may try to help Rivet calm down, and Kit would have encouragement from Clank or visa versa. Seriously this felt rushed, imagine if in the original game after Umbris we just cut to Drek's fleet and then to Veldin, it would be so jarring that Ratchet and Clank were just best buddy's again despite what happened earlier, thats what makes the Zordoom cutscene so jarring.

    • @DarkDax
      @DarkDax  2 года назад +1

This would have been great! I felt something similar when I finished the game too, it would have really benefitted the story and shown the duo’s character development if they shared their own struggles with the Rivet and Kit. Something a little humbling and as you say mentoring.
It does feel a little rushed in places and I wonder if that’s because of changes in the story or just the way it was written.

@@DarkDax they spent most of the development time on the engine, it also doesn't help that the writers for the future saga were replaced with some bums off the street who make girl power comics, so the story is one dimensional because the people writing it weren't very creative. This could have been a chance for Insomniac to make up for the reboot being an appalling abomination and even from their own perspective, "redeem" Ratchet being a jerk in the original. I think the story would have worked better if the resistance or "Free Polaris movement" as I call it, was a fraudulent setup by Emperor Nefarious to maintain his control by giving people an enemy of the state so to speak, and Captain Quantum would be the same position as Quark was to Drek in the first game, an underling who's deals with one another were kept out of sight out of mind. Rivet would be one of the few members not in on the plot, so they could have done the Umbris situation again, where Rivet becomes a problem for Quantum and Nefarious and so they make an attempt to remove her from the equation. This would help in justifying Rivet being angry and being a piece of shit to Kit, because betrayal is a very understandable emotion. the cause she had fought for her entire life had been a lie, so now she goes beserk in killing everyone who wronged her, adding salt to the wound is that Kit is the very warbot who nearly killed her, and you have the setup for a great second act. For Ratchet and Clank this would be a great moment to give them character depth, Ratchet would be looking at a younger version of himself, reflecting on his attitude at the time, maybe even talk to clank about it, the two would try to help their counterparts out, not wanting them to have to struggle as hard as they did, but having to accept Rivet and Kit have to figure this out on their own, then we get a callback to Gemlik base with a kickass soundtrack where Rivet finds Quantum, but like with Ratchet that single minded nature of her's comes at a price, which would finally help her calm down and accept Kit as her friend, I probably put more effort into this comment than the jokers who wrote the script for the game at Insomniac.

I saw a interview recently that addressed why Clank wasn't repaired until the credits and it was because of the message of disability and acceptence of it. There was a scene initially of Rivet fixing him but they omitted it thinking it would go against the message they were establishing with Rivet and Clank's disabilities and how they learned to live with it/not let it hinder them/be seen as a burden. So instead the credits settled on going with a golden arm to represent how Clank grew as a person and his friendship with Rivet who taught him about accepting he's still the same person regardless of what had happened to him. They had kept in contact with disabled people for feedback on how to write and address Rivet and Clank's arcs and how they cope with the loss of an arm, its really neat how much thought went into this part of them.

Imma have to disagree with many points u have said in the video for the following reasons. Before I start great video and channel definitely earned a sub from me keep up the great work. Anyways I’ll start off with ratchet and clank in the previous og games ratchets character was different then it was in rift apart. The reason for that is because he has matured allot since the day he met clank and as a game developer if they where to keep the same personality for rather threw out each game would show no character development at all. Rather in rift apart had some moments where he opened up about finding his family towards kit and after playing the games since the beginning of time I see no sort of character personality lacking with ratchet in rift apart. Same as with clank gone are the days when he use to be a secret agent and would always rush in fixing things without thinking. His new personality he’s much more calm and compacted reason being character development yet again. This game was intended for new comers as well as old time fans so as a game developer if they just focused on the og fans by giving them what they want what happenes to the new comers ? They would lose interest because they wouldn’t understand a single bit of story. As u mentioned characters such as qwark for new comers they wouldn’t understand who qwark truly is or rusty pete for example. The reason for this is because a game developer after shouldn’t just inform a new comer in one single game about what this character is. If they did that the previous games whould be deamed useless to even play. The whole reason for that is for them to play previous games to understand what’s going on rather then 1 game just telling them everything they need to know about all characters in rather and clank. Yes maybe some enemies and boss fights are repetitive I can agree on that but story wise the game pretty much nailed it for being a game tailored to new comers and og fans. The story contained the lombaxes Lorbs which further enhances what future games could be covering in terms of story for lombaxes we even got mags a mysterious lombaxe we don’t know of as well as it whouldnt be logical for insomniac to just give us the best of the best story which answers every question. For example people wanna know the lombaxes dimensions what happened to ratchets gf and many more questions left unanswered. If rist apart had answered all these questions there we go we wouldn’t have anything else we would anticipate for next instalments as well as it would be even more challenging to creat a game better and more attracting then rift apart because it was way too over the top you know what I mean? Like tools of destruction was good but not over the top to the point where crack in time would be a pointless game afterwards. Same with rift apart this game sets the future for the series in a great path and the next game could be elaborating this story line and many unanswered questions even further which I’m sure will definitly happen. Arena challenges I would say where simple not crazy like a crack in time had but it gets the job done I geuss. The ryno as u mentioned was given to us for free but so was it in crack in time and tools of destruction so I don’t really see the problem with that. Yes one could say this game was really easy which was the case for me it could’ve been a bit more harder like u stated and could’ve had more variety in enemies but yet again no game is absolute perfect. Despite these minor flaws rift apart has shown great gameplay as well as the story fits in just perfectly to satisfy new comers and old time fans. Even as a long time fan I adored this title allot and ratchets maturity was really showed in this story as he like I previously stated has went threw lots of character development so it makes sense why insomniac wouldn’t keep the same asshole ratchet personality from the past. It just wouldn’t fit well with where the story is and wouldn’t have shown any sort of character development which is crucial in a game. People want the old ratchet I get that but as with everyone in the real world sometimes u where a different person then u are now everyone changes and that’s what rather showed allot in rift apart. He did have great moments where his personality shined he helped kit out of hiding and gave her a smile she never had. He didn’t argue with rivet at that one altercation end game because he knows that an argument wouldn’t be worth it and it definitely wouldn’t prove his point so he so he steered away from that. These are key character moments that I myself could relate to as well. Sometimes kids games for the most part have adult humour in them but it isn’t necessary for them to. Overall this is why I believe rift apart pretty much hit all aspects of what makes a good ratchet and clank game for 2021 for what it was suppose to be it nailed it was a fantastic game as well as the story and planets where fantastic.

Where's the corporate satire and adult jokes??? Why did Ratchet regress into a fuzzy widdle baby, who's also sidelined by a female counterpart??? What happened to the funky industrial DNB soundtrack of the originals??? (bring back David Bergeaud!) WHY WONT CHARACTERS EVER SHUT UP DURING GAMEPLAY???
It's a playable Pixar movie, big deal. If I wanted to watch an average wholesome Pixar movie, I'D WATCH A PIXAR MOVIE. But of course because of the pretty graphics and positive messages for kids, and because there are barely any PS5 exclusives, it gets 10/10 across the board. Interesting take on Rift Apart but I do have some problems with it. The RYNO requiring you to collect a set number of plans to unlock instead of paying for it has been a thing in the series ever since TOD in 2007 so its kinda weird to take grievance with it at this point, unless you never played any other games but the ps2 ones?
Clank sections have always been the weakest part of the old R&C games, the gameplay always just came down to "tell robot to insert square peg into square hole" and just felt tedious and time fillerish. The best its ever been was ACIT and RA I feel is not as good as it but still better than the ps2 game sections, it would be better if there had more difficult optional puzzles like ACIT tho.
Nefarious being sick of losing doesn't mean he's incompetent, I mean he got beat multiple times by Qwark before he ever even met R&C, a character well known for being an idiot, he has a pretty long history of losses. Its also heavily implied near the end of the game that the main reason the Emperor was able to win so much and so easily is because he never faced any true difficult challenges. Basically the Emperor was playing in easy mode and the Doc in hard mode. It's not that Doc is incompetent, its just that he faced more difficult opposition, him and the Emperor are actually pretty comparable in their capabilities, the Emperor is just an overly arrogant douchebag and assumed Doc was incompetent and that that was the reason, to quote Doc when the Emperor started getting beat back: "SEE, this is why my dimension is hard to take over, its not because of me". Also Dr. N didnt die at the end he just got pinned to the ground by the giant head, you see him going to visit Lawrence and his family in the credits. You really think they would just kill Dr. N like that? After he was originally supposed to be killed off in ACIT but higher ups told them to retcon it to keep him alive? lol
Rivet being nasty in those instances is also pretty understandable considering her history with robots and also her discovering that the robot she thought was her new friend when she just started opening up again was actually the one that blew her arm off years ago and was hiding it from her, would understandably cause her to feel alot of undirected frustration and confused emotions. She had a far better reason to act the way she did than Ratchet did in the 2002 game, who was just being a dick to clank for far longer than was necessary for a mistake he made. Calling her a bitch for that, then admiring 2002 Ratchet as being "sassy" just makes you look like a huge hypocrite tbh.
Also there clearly wasnt time for the characters to fix clank, since the threat of reality collapsing on itself was approaching quick and making a new dimensionator to fix it then getting it back from the emperor was far more important.
Continuity-wise the director of RA, Mike Daly has said multiple times in interviews that the 2016 game/movie is Qwark's recounted version of the events from the original and him being an unreliable narrator is not to be trusted, he said IG wanted to return to the canon that they had been working on since 2002 and not the 2016 game, and that RA happens after ITN. The 2016 game/movie are in-universe fiction, and an embellished sensationalised version of R&Cs origins. The sets at the parade at the start of RA are there because Qwark is the one who organised the event and set it up. Qwark's bio also doesn't mention him being the captain of the galactic rangers and Ratchet's doesnt mention that guy Grimroth Razz who raised him in the 2016 movie/game at all. The 2016 game did not replace the 2002 game from the canon.

Honestly we got to remember Racthet in the first game was really young. I do agree Racthet's bickering with with clank wen't on little too long then it should've been. Ratchet was really young and immature in the first game and his arc was to grow from a selfish young kid into a hero. What I don't like about the reboot and rift apart is that they try to make him too goody good hero without any edge to him. At least going commando and up your arsenal matured Racthet but still kept his personality in tact.

Something I feel like it was lost in the reboot and even rift apart.
Plus this was the early 2000s, being edgy was hip at the time. So I'm not surprised Racthet in the first game was a edgy teen especially in 2002.

Man, Some of the things you mentioned I never really realised but I sort of agree with many points you make, however I really find it odd that you find the gameplay dumbed down, in my opinion the combat has really taken a turn towards being more difficult. I played on the hardest difficulty and if I remeber correctly I heard something that shots sort of home in on you on harder difficulties make it harder to dodge fire unless you use the new phantom dash mechanic. Then again I don't really like the invinciblity frames of the phantom dash but I disctinclly remeber having the most fun I had in years with this game since it was just so different it was difficult.
regardless of my opinions I really enjoyed the video and the points you make are quite justified, especially with rivet. I felt that she was the weakest character being basically a copy of ratchet. I think that the story would've improved a bit if Rivet was more distrustting of everyone, especially robots due to what happened to her and Kit and for Ratchet I think maybe they should've shown how ratchet was more like "not my dimension not my problem" until he sees just how bad Rivet's dimension is. Since you may not realise it but Ratchet and clanks plan was to just fix everything and go back home, they (i'm pretty sure) never mention anything about helping Rivet defeat the emperor until he decided to invade ratchet's dimension.
I hope the next game in the series is either finally going to show us the lombax dimension or is going to be sometype of mmorpg, where you can play as the many races in the R&C universe and maybe we can go visit some old planets, but that's never happening.

I'm so touched. You said everything perfectly. 💜
Rift Apart from gameplay, graphics, animation and R&C relationship side is a true love letter to fans. The main problem stands in the details of storytelling, characters motivations, and the mess, which all this 'reboot' thing created. Insomniac seem to be lost in threads they've been creating in the series through years and many of them has ended being unexplained. I have hopes that they're about to move it with their next game where the other Lombaxes are likely to finally show themselves.
Rift Apart is not a best game without any doubts. But all they did with this one, proves that they do care about our boys. Heck, the amount of nominations they got in game awards shows how strong this series stands. It should fuel Insomniac more as like knowing that Rivet's Rule 34 arts gonna appear.
Oh, about that. FINALLY someone who doesn't praise Rivet just because she exists and admitted she's a 'bitch'. THANK YOU.

Honestly I think the problem of walking back or quickly resolving characters flaws in this game might still be influenced by the old criticism of the first game that Ratchet was too rude to Clank. I think there are some great seeds for character conflict and depth with Rivet especially, but since every character is so quick to say "sorry" and "thank you" even over the most random things, it doesn't feel like there's enough room or time for her or Kit to develop believably. Like the writers are partially afraid of people saying the same thing about Rivet being too rude?
But really it could also be because of the huge story re-write that apparently happened partway through this game, as well as the extremely short dev period. I think it apparently started serious production around 2019 and was almost ready in 2020 before the re-write? (According to information I heard in The Golden Bolt's retrospective for this game) That is seriously insane for how detailed the visuals are and how polished the game is for such a short time. But I think there was only so much you can do in such a short time to iron out the story and character writing for the game

They really nerfed the Nefarious to make the Medic look good. Ifvthat was OG Nefarious dude would've taken advantage of his double's success to greater effect, especially going off how he seems to handle stress and being put in a tug of war with his foes, nevermind not having his way. The Doctor has lost several times before and came back more sinister than the last. The Emperor, apparently, has never lost and has no reason to come up with contingencies to secure his victories; or at least not contingencies on top of contingencies ad infinitum. And yet even fighting him is underwhelming. The Doctor had his minions to fight alongside him as well; gating the way and all; but generally he handled the fight *himself* throwing self-projections, energy bombs, finger lasers and even opening rifts that hailed missiles and streams of plasma at the duo to kill them. But the Emperor seems to rely on his boys far more as all he does is throw a punch, maybe a rock, and sometimes the boxes on the ground, and he summons his minions using the Dimensionator, not his own strength. The only really good thing he had going was his suit but even that's kinda just set dressing as once again, Dimensionator overuse. Sure the Biobloterator was easy but you at least had to move around to avoid the cannon shots fired at a quick rate *and* the homing missile swarm that will screw you up if you're not careful.
Honestly. There's even unused voicelines mentioning some celestial alignment or whatever that Dr. N was trying to get which would've been a way better reason than "Iwannawin" yet the reason they didn't go for it is because of the "Finding Lombax" thing.
But Ratchet was done after the hat broke, so now we're going on that bandwagon again; going full roadhog on that I guess? Except no. It's just getting them back home. And then Emp. N turns up only for them to end up going back home anyway. And "the dimensions are collapsing" yea totally. The onlybthing remotely involving that is Blizar being destroyed in Rivet's dimension....CUZ OF A DRILL BOARING INTO SOME BLIZON?? There's no merging of one planet intobthe same planet but from a different plane, no random incursions from denizens of other worlds being taken by surprised due tona sudden shift in scenery. That only happens in the intro. And that's it. That's literally a perfect reason to have the places you go to have enemies respawn, yet there aren't any? You go ahead and decide to make the Dimensionator an active tool in this story, get it destroyed, cause what's supposed to be a cataclysmic event, EVEN HAVE THE ANTAGONIST lightly BRING IT UP BY TRYING TO HIDE IT, but go no further than making it a platforming section and a slingshot derivative.
There is no reason for this game to exist. I'm dead serious, there is no viable plot in this game. Stuff happens and we go to fix the stuff that happens but we don't even expand upon the stuff that's happening to give gravitas to the situation.
It"s no fking wonder they have time to go ahead and let our boy wait at the bar for his date to arrive.

She's suppose to be hurt by loosing a hand... but it's a right hand and she made a perfectly functionating, never glithing one for herself with no help because she is just that awesome and we can't have any differences in gameplay style from Ratchet and she never struggles because of the prostetics. Or didn't gain any advantages. It's almost like the creators just wanted her to have a robot arm because it looked cool and didn't bother to add anything of significance to it.
    .
Doctor Nefarious is a complete idiot that iritates me in the game until he meets Emperor who is a complete idiot by design. Emperor never failed so never learned by his mistakes and never realised that actions have consequences, so he doesn't care that he is messing the universes using the dimentionator or that he is overdoing things, because everything always worked out for him in the end without much effort and our Nefariosu shows some sparks of his old genius and experience in trying to tell him off. But... he just has no agency at all, writers mistook him for Eggman of the series and treated as such. It's so angering for a fan like me, especially that he was shown to not only be more competent but also COMPLEX AS A CHARACTER.

I personally think it was a good Ratchet & Clank game, especially gameplay wise, but I agree that it does indeed have its flaws. One thing that really bugs me is how I feel like it is more aimed towards newer, 2016 reimagined/movie fans then it does long time ones, as the writers seemed to have played it safe when it came to explaining things about the current timeline. I mean one big example is that there is never a moment in the game where it is properly explained why the Lombaxes built the Dimensionator or why they left to another dimension.
I think if the game was a bit longer it could have fixed that and other problems. It also could have led to some interesting things like included more characters and their AU counterparts like Talwyn Apogee and Big Al, explained more about Rivet's universe like the origins of Emperor Nefarious, and have us going to an interesting dimension or 2 like Ratchet and Clank getting stranded in the Cragmite prison dimension while Rivet and Kit end up in a one where Drek became the king of the Solana galaxy.
Just like Miles Morales, Rift Apart should be considered as a test of seeing the PS5 improving on their games, which did well and after seeing how big the new Spider-Man 2 game is, I bet the next R&C game will be too and likely have less of the problems Rift Apart had.

On top of that, ratchet and clank don't feel like themselves. Before they would fight here and there and mess around with one another, ratchet always wanted to run into a fight, while clank would rather analyze the situation first, in rift apart they both just feel like pussies that only say nice things to one another. • @Bordpie

We could nitpick at the details all day but it's clear to see the general trend of the series which many games have gone in (but not all) which are less inspired, catered to a generic, lowest common denominator audience at the behest of game publishers, and made by people who probably think because they have a degree in art or game design they know everything about how to make a good game and don't have any self drive, vision or passion to make anything beyond generic, algorithmic content (no disrespect for the work put into the games though).
While everyone is patting IG on the back for not engaging in crunch for this game, I sometimes wonder if it is necessary to get a good game. Like two of their best games were done under very tight timescales, UYA and ACiT. Of course constant crunch is not sustainable, but I respect the devs for the sheer work and passion that went into those games and it shows in the early work. It shows the dedication and passion of the people just following a creative endeavour. It's like they wrote the original manual for how to make these games and now the new generation is just reading it (badly) and putting half arsed effort into making the new games as great as the old ones (or they genuinely don't know what they are doing). No disrespect to game devs but I wish there was more passion nowadays.

Looking into some of the cut content of Rift Apart, the game had so much more planned, like a much better arena, more enemies, Qwark having more screentime, gadgets returning, etc. As for the story, the original writer's material seemed to be altered by her co-writer which may have contributed to the game's shaky narrative.
Rift Apart makes me very hopeful for what a sequel could bring. To me, it feels like the series is just trying to find its footing once more and rally fans old and new to something much bigger, whenever that day comes.

I'm nearly 7 minutes in and I already agree. Even though the game is open and flashy, it somehow manages to make playing it feel compact and lackluster. Compared to the previous ratchet and clank it's just not as good. 80% visual, 20% substance. Also great video by the way, thanks recommendations 😁

Just got this cause it's on sale for $30 and yea, Insomniac is still one of my favorite studios but I think Ratchets best days are behind us sadly. I only say that cause the past two ratchet games aren't as good as some of the PS2 & PS3 games. It's like Resident Evil, I'll always play the games but I just have to accept that some games are gonna be hit and miss for me. Glad I own physical copies of all the old games though, can always revisit them.

The games we enjoyed are always there and we just have to accept the direction the new writers wanted to go in. At least we can rest in the fact the series isn't dead regardless of whether it stays close to it's roots. Nothing beats OG Ratchet and Clank though.

Amazing video. I think Rift Apart is a great game, but not such a great Ratchet and Clank game. Like a rung above Tools of Destruction. Though the movement and much of the weapon arsenal are truly great in my opinion and many elements do shine, there are just too many missed opportunities and approaches taken to the writing and design that I simply cannot gel with. I am ever grateful that the torch of Ratchet and Clank still burns and that the shooter 3-D platformer/puzzle game is still alive and kicking, if somewhat weakly. It's certainly a step forward from Ratchet 2016 in my book but I just hope the series can recapture the magic of the PS2 era someday by some miracle.

Perfectly sums up how I feel too. There are good elements to this game in both story and gameplay but it just doesn't hit the same level the PS2 series did (including Gladiator/Deadlock)

As a fan who grew up with the originals everything after the original 3 has been sort of a disappointment.. I still enjoyed the future series because there was still a lot to enjoy, specially in a Crack in time. But rift apart doesn't feel like a Rachet and clank.. In a lot of ways it feels quite outdated to be honest. The first game of all had more variety in gameplay then this game... The movement is oversimplified and you just shoot and try to avoid shots that you almost can't see so you just spam the jump and dodge button

Okay honestly really jarring to hear you say at the end that it's okay that this game doesn't portray the characters the same as the old games if that means new fans can come to love these characters. I think the video gives off the impression of being overwhelmingly negative considering the title and thumbnail being more mixed overall. Im glad i watched all the way through to hear that, but that dissonant attitude almost made me quit out the video. So just a point of criticism for videos like this. And that's coming from someone who's not fully satisfied with the story and character writing of this game.
I will say one more thing about Ratchet's former edge in his personality. The Golden Bolt made a good point i think that there's been so many games and so many years at this point, i dont think its too unreasonable that he could have grown into a softer version of himself after maturing over the years. Thats why i think its much more of a problem in 2016 remake than here.
And actually, after just finishing the game the second time i dont think that side to him is completely gone like it may seem at first. He doesnt really make any sarcastic comments, but there are multiple moments in cutscenes when he has a confused or surprised facial expression in reactions to something odd the other character said. I specifically mean when he meets the new side characters across the game. And i think the most obvious example is when he meets Gary and how he reacts to Gary unironically asking how he knew there was an invasion going on (right as explosions are happening behind him). Im just thinking of cutscene moments, but im pretty sure there's some dialogue during gameplay that does something similar that i can't recall off the top of my head. I didnt even notice this before, but looking at these moments again i think you can pretty easily look at it as a more mature Ratchet who may be still thinking some of the same kinds of things he used to say out loud, but refraining from making snarky comments.

Interesting to hear you call it jarring. When making the video at the time, the praise for the game was understandably high (some of the reasons I touched on in this video). Instead of focusing on what people (including myself) loved about the game, I decided to go in from the perspective of an R&C fan who has and always will enjoy the games and characters since they were a kid, but found themselves conflicted with elements of Rift Apart despite also enjoying their time - to which I go into detail in the video. Me recognising that fans and newcomers alike will have an entirely different opinion and love the game towards the end of the video is only me acknowledging I'm most probably in the minority here haha.
I'm also aware of reasonings people have shared explaining Ratchet's character in 2016 and RA, however, I can't help but personally feel they're still just fan explanations rather than posited directly from the games themselves. As I mentioned in the video, in the first game Ratchet wasn't always a nice character - but his cheekiness was there through to Quest for Booty, where Crack in Time went down a more cinematic and semi-serious overall tone where Ratchet's story is concerned.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not oblivious to the achievements and great things in this game, but the direction I wanted to go was more interesting from the POV of self-conflict than rehashing the well-deserved praise Rift Apart has garnered.
Hopefully that helps explain my mindset in this video and reaffirms my love for the series for those wondering. Also, totally hear your feedback and will try to make it more obvious that I do have praise for the game in these types of videos!

I’m mixed on it but I will say this they are slowly improving and getting close to that heart of the ps2 games it’s not perfect but it’s so close with only two or three big problems holding it back a smidge for me, The enemies and Bosses are repetitive, some story issues and getting collectibles wasn’t challenging were huge issues but here’s why I’m not as rough on the game and it’s the fact most of the team are new they have huge expectations to meet but they also have to play it safe in certain instances because of an evolving player base overall rift apart is close so very close the cracks are starting to heal slowly but surely, also you made some good points we needed more time with certain characters like the original dimension counterparts, Laurence, and Nefarious did feel useless

    • @DarkDax
      @DarkDax  2 года назад +3

They’re definitely heading in the right direction, it just needs some more time. It’s hands down better than 2016 and I’m also self-aware enough to know part of it may be childhood nostalgia taking over haha
