As Shawn Stockman said on The Sing Off, "WHO would THINK of this??????" This was crazy. Apparently, Avi really struggled with the hand choreography. I can see why!
Choreography is difficult for Avi. Let him lose and his hips can do things most people's hips can't but preset routines are difficult for him. He claims that the others spent an hour learning the choreo for Papoutai but he spent 6 hours and still couldn't quite get it. I say, just let his hips do their thing.
Thanks again! Having worked in retail for many years, I feel your pain, and understand the aversion to Christmas music - I almost break out in hives when it starts playing in October. That being said, Pentatonix is not just any Christmas music. And so once again, I make my plea for you to listen to "O Come All Ye Faithful".

When I was in choir in Jr. High, our choir director had a thing he had us do he called "the rhythm game", that involved a pattern of rhythmic clapping, leg slapping, and snapping while singing whatever we were learning to sing at the time... it was to help develop an innate sense of timing and rhythm and burning it into your brain/muscle memory so you could always keep the beat even under pressure. Of course it was nowhere near as complex as the hand chorography they're doing here, but that's what this reminded me of.
I have this in my mix of songs that listen to in my car year-round. I'm absolutely in love with it -- it's one of the few that I listen to almost every day on the way to work. Don't worry about it being on their Christmas album -- just enjoy that it's beautiful music!

Hooray for White Winter Hymnal!! I just love this cover. And the rythm. They did have a tutorial for the clapping, but I've never tried it because I'm so uncoordinated.
It might make you feel better to watch the demo "White Winter Hymnal Clapping Tutorial". They each do their part alone (they each do something different), then show the combined clapping sequence and after the end credits there are outtakes showing how they screwed up. And I think Avi's smile that you pointed out is relief that he made it through the worst of the rhythm section.

I'm a little confused about how this is a Christmas song. A song about sparrows heads falling off? That said, that hand choreography was extraordinary. And I loved Avi's little smile. I can't cede the title for Christmas music to them, however. I think you need to listen to some more Home Free Christmas stuff. Both groups are fabulous, but in pretty different ways. The skills that enable the singers to perform the intricate rhythms in both percussive and harmonies and background sounds in the music they do all the time enables them to do these hand rhythms with an ease that most of us couldn’t accomplish. This isn’t a new skill, they already had it.
To say they are good is such an understatement. They are so good and getting better and they just surprise you each and every time with their songs and their voices. When they met I believe Scott found Kevin on the internet and Avi was found from a friend of a friend. They just meant days before going on The Sing-Off and winning. Who does that? How do they do that? They are just unreal I don't even think they're from outer space, I think we are from outer space and they are the only intelligent human beings around. Got to love them!
If it makes you feel any better about the coordination of it all (beyond how many takes people have said it took), keep in mind that they're lip-synching this, so they're not having to worry about pitch and tone, just the hand choreo. This video spawned a lot of choirs and groups doing covers of it worldwide. If you want to feel "unworthy", however, check out this video from Denmark of over 30 teen and pre-teen girls performing the PTX arrangement of the song (but they had to sing and do the choreo at the same time). Mitch always seems to do better with things requiring coordination on their tiktoks, surprisingly even better than Kevin. I know Avi struggled.

I consider this video and their cover of "Havana" to be two of their best. I love everything they do, but these two are amazing.
