Being from Utah and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ; I love that you enable people to see how beautiful the Tabernacle Choir is. I tear up every time I've been blessed to see it in person. I hope you can come one day!

Had the opportunity to perform (with a different choir) Handel's "Messiah" at the Tabernacle. It's an experience like nothing else - standing there with my back against the base of the F-pipe, glad I was in the back because of the tears running down my face, the biggest smile I could sing through, body shaking from the organ and my whole soul coming out of my mouth. It's not just unforgettable, it's life-changing.
I'm so jealous! I creeped up on the big pipes at the National Cathedral in DC when I was on college choir tour in the 80s. There's just nothing like being close to the pipes!
Difficult to say everything that I want to and short comment, but I’ll try. If you understand what was going on in the United States at this time, you will never listen to this song in the same way again. At the beginning of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln said that he wouldn’t touch slavery. He only wanted to maintain the union. He went through a personal conversion, and then he took the nation through a national conversion. He once stated that “God wills this contest and he wills that it not end yet.” he called for days of fasting and prayer and national repentance. In his second inaugural address, he specifically talked about the sin of slavery. When have you ever known a national leader in a time of war stand up and say in effect “we may not be the good guys.” Both the north and the south had to reform and Lincoln knew it. By the end of the war the union knew what it was fighting for and this song represents that so beautifully. Let us live to make men free. I love this song.
Charlie, @blakeear's comment is spit on. This hymn is part military march, but a march for and behalf of Christ. The faint brass at the beginning reflects the distance in time and space from these Civil War battles leading the many voices to proclaim 'truth is marching on.'

I just made the suggestion as well before I saw this comment. I think we're up to at least four or five independent recommendations for the same hymn. Nice
Yes, Charlie. All the singers in the 350 person choir and the players in the orchestra are volunteers. They all go through tryouts where they are tested vocally, and academically in music theory and practice, and they practice every Thursday night for a few hours, then perform Sunday mornings. They are expected to learn and know over 350 songs, practice them in advance, and come to their practices already knowing the songs so their practices are advanced. The organ's beginnings date back to the 1850s when the pipes were brought via the Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America, and then transported from San Pedro CA across the Mojave Desert and up to Salt Lake City by wagon train. The choir usually performed only with the organ, until the 1990s when the Church added the orchestra. (They did a number of vinyl albums with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in the 1950s-70s.) But, to appreciate the Choir, you really need to hear them in the Tabernacle, because it is the acoustics of the Tabernacle (where they perform weekly) that puts you inside the sound, engulfing you. Sit about the 5th-10th row back from front, center, and see what happens. I'll never forget the first time I heard them on about June 12th, 1972. Something I will never forget. Maybe it won't be the same for you, but for me it was awe inspiring.
I was in attendance on Sunday morning for Music and the Spoken word when they did Come thou Fount of Every Blessing. I was in the front row directly in front of the first chair Violinist. The sound in the tabernacle is impeccable and recording even grand as they are does not do the choir justice as a live performance can. Charlie it will be worth your time and investment to go.
Hello, do you have knowledge of a concert when opera singer Marian Anderson sang with the choir? I believe it was a Christmas concert televised on the public TV channel affiliated with the University of Houston, pre-1991. A couple interesting things to notice- the choir knows this song so well- none of the choir members need music. And also- when they zoom out, just take note of exactly how far away Mack Wilberg is from the choir itself due to the orchestra being there too!! My mom was in the choir for 15 yrs and it was always so interesting hearing about the details. And I don’t take for granted the countless concerts I was able to attend while she was in the choir.

I would LOVE it if reacted to BYU Vocal Point singing Nearer My God to Thee. Given your enjoyment of the Tabernacle Choir, I'm confident you'll be blown away.
As an inactive Mormon… watching these videos … so many complex feelings. The sacrifices Mormons make for the church is unbelievable and yet I have pride in the work ethic, the selflessness and compassion… the dedication to others and service. Sigh. It’s tough.
The negative "complex emotions" are from a source you are so able to overcome with the Saviours help, guidance and light! It is so worth the trials to be counted among the Saints of our Father! Take that step!
I am 76 years old and sing in a Lutheran church choir. I started listening to Music and the Spoken Word from KSL in Salt Lake 60 years ago when I was in high school in Cleveland, Ohio.
I love your channel,d as a member of the LDS Church, i appreciate your kind words. As a recent subscriber, i thank you for reacting to The (Mormon) Tabernacle Choir, and look forward to many more reactions by you, on whoever that you decide to watch and to listen.
Some more of my favorite hymns sung by the Choir A Poor Wayfaring Man Of Grief How Firm A Foundation The Spirit Of God Like A Fire Is Burning The Mourning Breaks Nearer My God To Thee.
I love singing the Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief myself. I haven’t had the pleasure of hearing the Choir in person, but enjoy listening to them each conference .
I'm sure I'm not the first to say this. But your genuine reactions to the Tab Choir are the BEST part of hearing these pieces again. I've gown up with and listened to them for years, and you've brought me fresh ears for it. I'm so excited to see you doing this. Prayers up for you and all the light and good you are bringing!
Thank you for doing this Charlie! This choir is absolutely amazing! I heard them in person and I don't have words to describe how heavenly they sound! ❤
My little brother sings with the choir, and it's been fun to see how hard they work. They are expected to know each piece really well before they ever sing it together, so their rehearsals aren't focused on learning the music, but tuning into each other and polishing the piece. Since the choir started performing regularly with the orchestra, it's taken their music to a fantastic new level and I love listening to it. My brother was excited to meet you this past weekend as well :)
Love you channel. Yoir first Tab Choir reaction brought me into your orbit. LDS people respect all faiths and work together with others to serve God and men. Don't let the crazies who spew hate instead of love distract xou. Love you man.
They also sang at the Olympics opening ceremony in Utah. This made me think of Russel M Nelson’s invitation to our youth: “I am inviting every young woman and every young man between the ages of 12 and 18 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to enlist in the youth battalion of the Lord to help gather Israel.”
I like how the choir changed the lyrics from, "Let us die to make men free," to "Let us live to make men free," and all the connotations that go with both of those lines.
We sing this very same arrangement in our church choir, and hold practices in my home. We are not the Tabernacle Choir, with about 10 men and maybe 15 women. But the magic is there when we sing. I feel blessed to have a main room and a piano that fits us, and the home never sounds better than when we sing! If I'm not mistaken this is the Mack Wilberg arrangement. Glad you enjoy it also!
The choir sang this arrangement for President Reagan’s inaugural parade. He was moved to tears and named them “ America’s choir”. There is a video here on RUclips of just that moment, it’s very powerful❤
This hymn was a battle anthem of the Union Army in the American Civil War. Julia Ward Howe wrote her own faith and freedom-centered lyrics because she found the original “John Brown’s body lies a-mouldrin’ in the grave” to be distasteful.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic was written during the American Civil War, a remembrance of the just cause for the Republic to win the war, "as He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free!"
Woah!!!! Don’t know why, but I TOTALLY listen to my composer and started crying massively-and couldn’t control it! What happened?? What amazing power this choir holds. You know what? I loved the song so much, I played it again… and gosh darn … had the same visceral reaction…. My heart…. 😮❤

Your response to this song just makes me want to shout from the rooftops AMEN! It’s a sound that almost transcends our reality! It’s so wonderful to feel your sincere love for this sound. Sometimes I can’t stop the tears while singing this song and many others that Dr Mac Wilberg creates or arranges!!!
Oh my goodness Charlie, watching you enjoy the Tabernacle Choir music has delighted my soul and brought me to tears….as in, streaming down my face tears! You are a special man and I love your passion for music 🤍
My sister just tried out for the choir this past Saturday. The first part of the trial consists of listening to about two hours of notes and identifying each one. These people are real professionals.
I’m from utah and wow there is something so unique about Mormons❤ I’m proud to be raised Mormon and now I don’t go to church but I love my people of God I feel like these are angels singing through these good pure hearted people ❤ it’s hypnotizing
As an Ex-Mo, I will still *always* retain my awe and admiration for the Tabernacle Choir. Part of that is because I have always been a massive band/choir geek; the other part is because, well, they’re simply other-worldly, no matter your faith. Insane respect for them, always.
I love that you're so secure in yourself that you're willing to be open and vulnerable to the sensitivity of the Tabernacle choir music. ❤ If you're ever in the mood for a super serene song, check out their version of "I Need Thee Every Hour" - exquisite.
You should really check out “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” by the BYU combined choirs and orchestra from last year. 4M views on RUclips. Amazing performance!
You obviously appreciate choirs! That's great as not many reaction people give them the time of day really. Another great choir I have found are the National Danish girls' choirs, aka The DR PIGEKORET You could listen to their renditions of Blackbird, River(Joni Mitchell), Come out and play, or Magnum Mysterium. I don't think you will be disappointed and like this choir today, have a very long history. Give them a try.
I had the opportunity in high school to learn this arrangement of the song and have loved it ever since. The was in the 60’s in, of all places, Southern California. After we performed it in our school auditorium, we all went to a local pizza place that had a piano in the hall and sang it again. In the crowd at the pizza joint were members of the military with tears in their eyes-to a man. At the piano was our lead tenor. He was a gifted pianist and tenor. Years later I saw him singing at the Met. Every time I hear this song I remember that experience. I now live in Utah and am a proud member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Keep up your great work sharing the beautiful songs of “my” choir.
Both my parents were in the Tabernacle choir when i was growing up. I have heard the choir live many many times. This is by far my favorite song they do. Goosebumps every time. I had the blessing to sing this same arrangement in a different choir. I could barely make it through because of tears. it's an amazing song sung by an amazing choir.
Glad you took our suggestion to listen to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Check out their web site & see what they have to know to try for an audition. That is also amazing. And yes, choir & orchestra are all volunteers. Some of them drive many, many miles for rehearsals. Some one also mentioned their Christmas special. That is an absolute must. They'll have a star of some kind as part of the special. They've had Lea Solonga (spell??) and other similar stars. These Christmas specials are on PBS & also later on YT. Enjoy!!
Heard this live the first time as a kid when the choir came to Milwaukee and played the Marcus Amphitheater in the early 90's. They closed the night with this and I couldn't believe how amazing the sound was. I was overcome at the end, as well...always am. One of my favorite hymns.
I love that you are focusing on love and beauty. This choir, which I learned about recently through another reactor on YT, is truly delivering beauty transcending any religion. Thank you 🥰
@@suem6004I can’t find it- do you know when he did that video? I’d love to see his reaction because I was able to attend that concert and it was AMAZING!!
Just to let you know, the choir won an award for that hymn. It is the choir's #1 Hit of all time. President Reagon has called the Tabernacle Choir, The American Choir. When he just President of the United States back in the 1980's.
"...as He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free!" this hymn is stirring and beautiful for many reasons. as historians have rightly pointed out, the colonies would never had been able to win their independence without belief in and support of God. inspired and inspiring- thanks for sharing! thanks for focusing 'on the good and the love', it's where the focus should be... ;-)
If you would like to know about the origins of this song, please research. The lyrics to the "march" were rewritten by the poet Julia Ward Howe by suggestion of a pastor she was standing next to while a Union Army (U.S. North soldiers) marched and sang rather foul lyrics regarding John Brown's body (fierce anti-slaver). She took the challenge, was awakened during the night by the words forming rapidly in her mind, and scrawled the new lyrics to this tune. It was the North's battle cry as they fought against their brothers in the South to free the slaves and to keep the Union together. *See United States Civil War (1861-64).
Also of interest ... the ORIGINAL 4th verse was, 'As He [Christ] died to make men holy, let us die to make men free ...' In the modern version it's, '... let us live to make men free.' During the US Civil War men of the north who were enlisting knew very well that 'war is hell' and that they may well die to eliminate slavery. There was a blood price to pay to end slavery in the United States and many good men paid that price. The same is true for any of our troops who become engaged in actions to preserve or protect freedom anywhere in the world.
The Tabernacle Choir has won several music awards. They are spectacular! Christmas concerts are great. My two favorite songs are Spirit of God and Hallelujah from Handal's Messiah.

I would LOVE it if reacted to BYU Vocal Point singing Nearer My God to Thee. Given your enjoyment of the Tabernacle Choir, I'm confident you'll be blown away.
Yes. This is what I was thinking too.
I second this!
@@beltizad And "In Christ Alone".
I love that one too! Great suggestion.
As an inactive Mormon… watching these videos … so many complex feelings. The sacrifices Mormons make for the church is unbelievable and yet I have pride in the work ethic, the selflessness and compassion… the dedication to others and service. Sigh. It’s tough.
Bless you❤
I get it. I love the church and everything it teaches, but I felt like I jyst wasn’t at the same level. Major respect!!
You're awesome!!!
It’s time to come back…the Lord is coming soon. Feel welcomed with open arms….Jesus has your back!!
The negative "complex emotions" are from a source you are so able to overcome with the Saviours help, guidance and light! It is so worth the trials to be counted among the Saints of our Father! Take that step!
Watching people react to the Tabernacle Choir is becoming one of my favorite rabbit holes!❤ You did not dissappoint, thank you for making this!
I loved watching him watch this and react to it. I have loved the Tabernacle
Choir all my life. I'm so glad he loved it.
I’m one of your DCI viewers, but also a member of the church. It’s so cool to see people outside of the church appreciate them
I am 76 years old and sing in a Lutheran church choir.

Love you too brother. Thanks for watching
I see tab choir, I leave a like. I wish I could hear all these songs for the first time again.
I was blessed to see this wonderful choir perform in person when I was 15. Still amazing to this day.
You really must hear them sing "The Spirit of God Like a Fire is Burning".
Yes yes YES!!
🙌🏻❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥☀️
YES!❤❤❤❤
What would make you say such a thing!!! I think you meant the spirit of the devil like a fire 👹🔥 burning
@iz_not_was this is not a religious battle ground. Save that shit for somewhere else 🙄. We're here for music
Same war Joseph Smith prophesied of. Just a cool observation.
@@ARedits7610 If war doesn't humble you, l don't know what will. It is also a tool in the quiver of God.
The story of her envisioning of the lyrics is very cool and interesting. George Orwell epically narrates how she did it.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic was written during the American Civil War, a remembrance of the just cause for the Republic to win the war, "as He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free!"
I love that line
The original line was 'As He died to make men Holy, let us die to make men free'.
One of my favorite songs because of the way they perform it!
Beautiful voice always LDS Tabernacle choir
Woah!!!! Don’t know why, but I TOTALLY listen to my composer and started crying massively-and couldn’t control it! What happened?? What amazing power this choir holds.
You know what? I loved the song so much, I played it again… and gosh darn … had the same visceral reaction…. My heart…. 😮❤

Amazing! What a cool fact! Pure, inspiring music often doesn't make the hot lists anymore. Thank you, @CharlieSmith, for sharing your genuine reactions. It's a joy to share this journey with you!
I just love you! I have listened to this choir every Sunday for the past 15 years but have come to appreciate it so much more since watching your videos. This one and Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing are our family's 2 favorites. I tear up every time I hear both of them. Thank you for sharing your beautiful love of music!
I don't remember ever crying listening to a song, but this channel has now got me multiple times
Beautiful music is beautiful music wherever it comes from. Thanks for your lovely reaction.
I get chills every time that the Mormon Tab performs this song.
I like the fact that you are able to make good choice for yourself to focus on the good. Such choice is edifying and uplifting.
My maternal grandparents were both in the 1964 Choir that was awarded the Grammy Award. Huge source of humility and (righteous) pride in our family. We have had a member of our family in the choir for four generations now. We are so blessed with music and the voices of angels. with the Thank you for highlighting the (Mormon) Tabernacle Choir. 🎶 🎵 🎼
Here in Tahiti we got so emotional listening to the Tabernacle Choir to the point that shared through our social network. Thank you, for sharing your impressions.
Charlie, please listen to Sissel performing "Slow Down" with the Tabernacle Choir in 2019. It's the most beautiful thing ever!
I agree!! The most beautiful thing you'll hear!

Nobody does choral music better than the Tabernacle Choir. Absolute chills!!

Really enjoying watching your discovery of the Tab Choir. They are phenomenal.

Mormon is a false religion. It is really goosebump.
Will you do Nearer My God to Thee by BYU's Vocal Point, please?
That one is on my spotify Playlist I listen to daily. Fantastic rendition of the song
You are right. God's Army for peace and love. So glad you love the Tabernacle Choir! As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I am touch to see you feel the Spirit as you listen to the Choir. Thank you for sharing you impressions with others. God bless you.
You have made me so happy by sharing this and your response. I sing in the tabernacle choir ( Alto 1) going on 5 years and it has been nothing short of an honor. We are all volunteers.
I so very much appreciate your unabashed love and feeling for music like this. Well done.
Mack Wilberg is a musical genius. Combined with the talents of the singers and the orchestra, it's magical!
Wow!
The most credit must go to the person who did this arrangement.
I cry whenever I hear this song.
It was indeed a BATTLE SONG from the US CIVIL WAR to end slavery and make men FREE!
This will knock your socks off. So glad you chose it.
You should really check out “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” by the BYU combined choirs and orchestra from last year. 4M views on RUclips. Amazing performance!
Just watched it again myself. I’ve never seen a more powerful performance of the song. Highly recommend.
If you mean when they sang at President Reece's installation, yup, that is a stunning version
I love the swells in the singing, when they get to the chorus it’s magical
You obviously appreciate choirs! That's great as not many reaction people give them the time of day really.
Another great choir I have found are the National Danish girls' choirs, aka The DR PIGEKORET
You could listen to their renditions of Blackbird, River(Joni Mitchell), Come out and play, or Magnum Mysterium.
My mother was in the Tabernacle Choir in 1959, when they sang this song, and won a Grammy award. :)
Charlie, You are welcome to come to Utah, the home of this beautiful choir. I’m Mormon, and I love your response to the beauty of this choir.
You ought to be in the Tabernacle and hear them in person. You will be floating with the Holy Spirit! And their Christmas shows are UNBEATABLE!!!!
Oh and Hansel’s messiah especially the hallelujah chorus brings the tingles and tears every time
I love that one!
Singing quietly is just so difficult, and they show such dynamic range. Thanks for sharing this
Haters go’n hate. Don’t mind them. Doesn’t change how wonderful the music is! It’s refreshing to focus on the music and not the politics.
Enjoy!!
That is one of my favorites! Thanks for sharing it- I haven’t heard it in years ❤️
Heard this live the first time as a kid when the choir came to Milwaukee and played the Marcus Amphitheater in the early 90's. They closed the night with this and I couldn't believe how amazing the sound was. I was overcome at the end, as well...always am. One of my favorite hymns.
Don't turn it up! Don't turn it up!!!
😂
This. As he said "why is it so quiet?" I was dying 😂
I love that you are focusing on love and beauty. This choir, which I learned about recently through another reactor on YT, is truly delivering beauty transcending any religion. Thank you 🥰

I love the Tabernacle Choir for their amazing Christmas songs!
Just to let you know, the choir won an award for that hymn. It is the choir's #1 Hit of all time. President Reagon has called the Tabernacle Choir, The American Choir. When he just President of the United States back in the 1980's.
"...as He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free!" this hymn is stirring and beautiful for many reasons. as historians have rightly pointed out, the colonies would never had been able to win their independence without belief in and support of God. inspired and inspiring- thanks for sharing! thanks for focusing 'on the good and the love', it's where the focus should be... ;-)
Whenever i listen to the song, i turn it up full blast and grab my cat and dance! She does not appreciate it. 😂.
🤣🤣
@TheCharlieSmithChannel and no the cat does NOT appreciate it.
I'm not Mormon but I love their choir. It's so spectacular, and I love the Christmas special.
Also of interest ... the ORIGINAL 4th verse was, 'As He [Christ] died to make men holy, let us die to make men free ...'
In the modern version it's, '... let us live to make men free.'
During the US Civil War men of the north who were enlisting knew very well that 'war is hell' and that they may well die to eliminate slavery.
