Hey Theo! Lawrence Gilliard Jr here! Thank you for your insightful review. I really enjoyed portraying Bob Stookey. My goal as an actor is to try and show the heart of a character and to make them as real as possible. Thank you for recognizing my hard work. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Be well and don't eat... Bob is BY FAR one of my favourite characters. One of the things I loved about Season 4 and Season 5 is how they show people have mental struggles because of the apocalypse - Carl wishing his dad was dead and then going back on it, Michonne having flashbacks and speaking to her dead husband in spirit, Maggie and Daryl struggling with grief over Beth to the point that when the group is met with rain in a drought, they don't celebrate - Maggie LITERALLY DRINKING HER OWN TEARS to survive and Daryl self harming as a way to cope. It's all realistic, but I love how they showed the opposite side of that realism with Bob. The fact that someone can go through terrible, harrowing experiences and still want to be positive. The fact that so much death around them can make someone want to celebrate life - even if that just means celebrating the fact that you're still breathing and you get to hold the hand of someone you love

I just finished the episode where he is there for the last time (I have to admit it's one of my many rewatches). I didn't like Bob at the beginning, but as soon as I started to warm up to him, like Sasha, he got taken away. When he went missing and Sasha was worried he was alone, it just shows she really knew him more than she wanted to admit. He hates being alone, and he was right about her. She's tougher than stone, but she's so sweet too. He's the other way. He seems sweet as a button, but he's tough. Considering the writing of most minors characters not being the best, yet, Bob being so loved despite his short run-time, I think a lot of credit should be given to the actor, who had expert charisma and worked the character well.

Bob was a combat medic but he was a human being who had seen and suffered both before and after the apocalypse from a various number of situations from war, to loss of friends. A lot of folks think that law enforcement, first responders or military personnel would be desensitized to the situation in the world, but in reality no one would be truly desensitized. Bob is realistic because even though he has his own specific character, people of all walks of life and backgrounds can related to something about Bob and how his role and character in the show is depicted. Bob is one of my favorite characters.

He’s suffering from success. As a field medic, it is literally; his job to outlive everyone else. Even post-APOC he’s stuck doing what he was trained to do, which is to survive. As the show goes on we begin to watch the survivor's guilt weigh him down, stealing his will to do what he’s done so well… Survive. His entire character is pure irony. Fighting to find the will to do what one does without thinking is a dark place to be.

3:27 actually meryl was battling addiction once he got to the prison as well he was looking for drugs in the mattresses in the cells. He was stressed out about everything between him the governor his brother and the group. He was acting cool but it was tearing him up and he was scared all he wanted to do in those moments was leave with his brother and just be brothers again. He was also causing issues over his drug use in the first season making the drugs a focus and priority.

I agree, Bob was one of best characters, that never turning into some post apocalyptic trope. I believe his alcoholism was simply a coping mechanism. After witnessing horrors on a daily basis and constantly losing those you love, alcohol because Bob’s way out. If only temporarily. It reminds me of Robert Neville, the protagonist in the novel, I Am Legend. As the vampires attack NeVille’s home nightly, he drinks himself into a stupor

Bob’s name actually used to be D’Angelo Barksdale, he use to run a project tower back in the day, shit got real for his family, he saw an out and took it, ended up Testifying against his Uncle Avon, had to skip town and go into protection, changed his name to Bob…he thought he was finally free….until the walkers showed up…shit got real when his whiteness protection detail tried to eat him. 😂
This is a better ending than him dying in prison on The Wire

Bob was an honest, and extremely well written character… . I remember reading a comment and someone was saying “Bob was weak that’s why he didn’t survive”, and I said not true “Bob was more like most people, he survived longer than most of us would’ve despite his short comings “addiction” who wouldn’t want to drink after the world fell, yet he overcame it”,, speak’s volumes of his character.

*He was also the most relatable for me personally. He had PTSD from stuff he saw, as did I which led to my alcohol problem for many years & his character was a good man, but he had his demons & they caused the death of a character I honestly couldn't care less about, Bob's death was a mistake I felt. Wish his arc had lasted a little longer.*

Your character & time on the show although shorter than many fans would have liked was inspiring & authentic to how addiction works. There were two characters who left a lasting impression on all others. And who's endings were very similar: Bob and Carl. Both spoke of a new and good world born out of the apocalypse being possible because of people like Rick, and his group. And both died, 'peacefully,' surrounded by most others in the group.

This made me feel! I completely, regretfully forgot about his character and this video sparked a huge fire in me of great character story telling in an otherwise, mess of a show in the coming seasons. Remembering the tainted meat scene made me genuinely hyped about that moment in the show. Sometimes it's the smallest characters who have the greatest impact. I think it's Bob who made people love Nick so much in FTWD that when his character parted ways with the show, people fell off.
